It's not the cheapest, but they are very competitive and way easier to use than the other provider I was using. Pros I chose Patriot because I was frustrated with my previous vendor and they looked affordable and seemed reasonable. I have been greatly impressed with them since signing on -- their customer support is top notch: super responsive, the FAQs are very helpful, even their chatbot is worth using. I like the modern easy to use interface, and the fact that even the more niche deductions I need with my S-Corp are covered cleanly by the software. Cons I have no complaints about Patriot. This is my 2nd year using them, and everything just works. No complaints! I was disappointed to have to move on. These limitations may not impact other businesses, and I would gladly return to Patriot Accounting if these issues are addressed. They truly are good people. Pros First, I want to clarify that this is NOT a negative review. After using QuickBooks for over 20 years, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Patriot Accounting offered everything my small business needed: exceptional customer service, reasonable pricing, and an attractive, intuitive online platform. Cons The software has two major limitations for a service business. First, it cannot accept deposits or progress payments for a job; payments can only be made against an existing invoice. While this might not be a problem for some, it created significant issues for me. Once a payment is applied to an invoice, the invoice is "locked" and cannot be modified. This restriction becomes problematic when a customer wants to add or remove a service from their project, or if I want to apply a discount for any reason. The workaround suggested by Patriot—using a journal entry to receive payments (to a bank account but not directly to a customer) and later deleting this journal entry to apply the payment to an invoice created at the end of the job—is completely impractical. The payment and the final invoice would often occur in different years and accounts receivable reports would become meaningless. Pros The value of the program and ease of processing payroll for our small company. It provides very detailed reports, and is very easy to navigate the system. Cons Haven't found anything yet! Every report, every aspect, every output product, even through updates to the software, has been easy to implement and utilize in our ancillary programs. This is a no-brainer if you want to be efficient and effective. Cons The 1099 reporting mechanism isn't as smooth as the W-2 reporting. The program needs to be able to print pro-forma 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC without having to use a Preprinted Form. The cost was considerably lower, and they don't hassle us with additional fees for every little thing. AND they process our tax deposits! That's the best part of all. I love that when I call into Patriot Customer Support that I am not on hold for hours and I am talking to someone who actually knows the software. Every time I've had to call support the representative was kind and knowledgeable and was able to resolve my question on the first call. Cons I have found only one con with Patriot, which is their payroll processing time. I wish it didn't take 5 business days to process payroll. I do miss having a 24 hour processing time. Since I run payroll with Patriot I can track those payments and produce a 1099 for free! Nice bonus. Pros After using competitor software, what I like most is that when I do have a question, I get an answer quickly with minimal hold time from someone in the US that I can understand and that is well versed in the software and able to handle the issue in that phone call with no call backs. The number one best thing about Patriot though, is their customer service. We may run into issues with the software, but being able to chat or call someone (and get a real person), has always compensated for any software shortcomings. Cons I do wish they would go back to including a broken up version of the quarterly tax filing reports, in addition to one big packet for each quarter. Clients will often request just a 941 report, and we have to send a full packet or take the time to extract that one report from the packet. It was nice when you had options.
