I was disappointed to have to move on. These limitations may not impact other businesses, and I would gladly return to Patriot Accounting if these issues are addressed. They truly are good people. Pros First, I want to clarify that this is NOT a negative review. After using QuickBooks for over 20 years, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Patriot Accounting offered everything my small business needed: exceptional customer service, reasonable pricing, and an attractive, intuitive online platform. Cons The software has two major limitations for a service business. First, it cannot accept deposits or progress payments for a job; payments can only be made against an existing invoice. While this might not be a problem for some, it created significant issues for me. Once a payment is applied to an invoice, the invoice is "locked" and cannot be modified. This restriction becomes problematic when a customer wants to add or remove a service from their project, or if I want to apply a discount for any reason. The workaround suggested by Patriot—using a journal entry to receive payments (to a bank account but not directly to a customer) and later deleting this journal entry to apply the payment to an invoice created at the end of the job—is completely impractical. The payment and the final invoice would often occur in different years and accounts receivable reports would become meaningless. Cons I would like more instructions for those of us with small businesses that simply indicates the tax report(s) we will need to pull and provide our CPA’s for tax deductions. I absolutely love Patriot Payroll. It is user friendly; the price is more than competitive, and the startup discount and referral rewards are great. The reporting features and customer service are top notch. There is a requirement to run payroll four business days ahead of time but there is also an option to prefund payroll to shorten that process time. Also, when you are talking to support, they are kind and patient and do not make you feel like you are wasting their time or that you are bothering them. I can’t stress this enough. It was a perfect fit for us, and we immediately implemented it in 2017, and haven't changed or even considered changing since then, even through our renewed growth. Pros The value of the program and ease of processing payroll for our small company. It provides very detailed reports, and is very easy to navigate the system. Cons Haven't found anything yet! Every report, every aspect, every output product, even through updates to the software, has been easy to implement and utilize in our ancillary programs. Arbitrary limit on length of reference when recording payments. Some customers have non-numeric check numbers or very long check numbers. Patriot freaks out with this and the error message is not really helpful - we just know from experience what is happening. The program is super easy to use and provides 100% accuracy in reporting. The value as compared to other payroll packages and/or services is very substantial. I run payroll for about 20% of what other services would cost. This is a no-brainer if you want to be efficient and effective. Cons The 1099 reporting mechanism isn't as smooth as the W-2 reporting. The program needs to be able to print pro-forma 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC without having to use a Preprinted Form. Pros Patriot Payroll is super easy to use. If offer an array of features that our company can grow into and is exactly what we need right now. One less thing for me to do. Cons Wish the vacation accrual time worked for me, but there doesn't appear to be a way to set a date that hours stop accruing. The only option is to set an accrual max limit which didn't work because people use their accrued time and therefore accrued time never reached the max. If my practice grows, I will probably get their bookkeeping software as well, but right now I'm small enough that I don't need it yet. Pros The ease of use is the best thing about Patriot Payroll. I was able to set it up without much problem. I have a background in accounting, so I'm not sure how easy it would be if you knew nothing about payroll, but someone who has kept books should be able to do it no problem. Also, their customer support was amazing. I couldn't remember if I'd selected something for the taxes and I wrote their support and the responded within a few hours. The value is great too - the penalties are steep for messing up payroll and so full service payroll is less than the cost of a steak dinner every month. Right now I'm the only employee, but I feel confident that if I bring on staff, that I will not have any trouble setting up compliant payroll for an employee. Forget these huge corporate conglomerates that don't care about you, go with these guys! Cons Nothing at all. No complaints. Pros We've been pleased with Patriot Payroll and have used their services for many years. It's easy-to-use, customer/client support is outstanding, and we seldom (if ever) have had bugs in all the years we've been with them. I have recommended Patriot to my business friends and feel they have earned the 5 starts I have them. Cons I can't name a thing that I like least about Patriot Payroll except that a few times there a was a fee that wasn't our company's fault - it was actually an issue between our bank and Patriot. For any questions and issues it has been easy to access customer support, and they have been able to answer all my questions. Cons I don't have any negative experiences with Patriot Payroll. I had never run payroll before... after a few calls to their customer service I was able to run the payroll for the time that company had left. Now I use Patriot software to run payroll for my husband small business. Patriot is the best solution for our small business payroll needs. Pros Best solution for my small business payroll needs. Platform is user friendly. I get fast support when needed either over the phone or by chat. To this date i have not experienced bugs. Cons I have not experience any issues with Patriot. It fits our needs perfectly. If growing the number of employees, I would have to evaluate the cost and compare it with other options.
