Bookkeeper Political Organization Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Perfect for a small company with basic payroll needs" April 18, 2023 5.0 Pros I'm so glad that Patriot offers a basic payroll service. While shopping around, I found mostly companies that only offer more automated payroll services that do a lot for you. I get how that could be great for many people and companies, but I don't need or want full service payroll. The other, equally fantastic thing about Patriot is their customer service. I've only needed to reach out to them a couple of times, but I never waited long to get someone on the line. Their reps were very competent, and my questions were answered quickly. Cons I had issues with W2 and W3 reporting with SSA, but it was not Patriot's fault at all. I didn't have time to resolve electronic filing issues with the SSA, so I needed to mail physical copies. Since specific color forms are required for that, I couldn't simply print the W2s as generated by Patriot. Patriot's W2 and W3 files are perfect for electronic filing. Just not mail filing. I had to finagle a Word Doc with all the necessary info spaced out in hard-to-guess ways. It took a number of hours, but I got it. It worked out in the end. But it would have been AMAZING if Patriot had been able to give me a file that had all the info spaced out on the page where it needed to be, in order to simply print onto a W2 or W3 form. I have no idea if that's possible, or how it could be done. But OMG, my life would have been so less stressful for those couple of days! Cons As of now, I have not come across any features I dislike. The four-day direct deposit might be an issue, but that would be upon me for not planning ahead. The customer service is also excellent. Every time I have emailed an issue, they have an answer within 24 hours, often same day. Cons I don't really have any negatives. The software has worked well and we haven't had any issues thus far. You also have to classify each part of every payroll check manually. The don't let you delete their chart of accounts so you see too much unnecessary information. There support teams are hard to reach and they are slow. They also cost way too much for how much work you have to do. Easy, can process payroll from anywhere, customer service is top notch! Pros The ease of setting up a company and employees was great. It's very easy to process a payroll and if there are any issues, the customer service team is very responsive! The cost of using Patriot is way more affordable than the prior company we were using. Pros Once set up this is a great time-saver for running payroll and paying taxes for small businesses. I liked that I was able to run payroll very quickly and I could relax that the required taxes were being paid for our business. I liked being able to pay our employees direct pay. Our accountant liked being able to run reports and that it integrated into Quickbooks. Cons The biggest con that we experienced is that there was too much required time between running payroll and being able to direct deposit checks into our employee accounts, especially once accounts are already established, ach transfers should be able to be done faster, 2 day max, not 3-4 business days min. February 16, 2018 4.0 This is a very user-friendly and inexpensive way to get payroll done. This software has saved our company a lot of time and money. I would recommend this product to small and medium-size companies. Pros The customer support is very effective and made Implementation process very smooth. The process for logging employee hours and applying deductions are very easy to understand and straightforward. This product has a very user-friendly UI that is clean and very intuitive, this makes reporting very flexible. This is a cost effective solution for small companies as long as you do not need extensive job costing integration into an accounting system. Cons The direct deposit functionality is very restrictive at times and they require that the payroll is processed by Monday for it to be distributed to the employee's account on Friday. Patriot Payroll does use ADP as a third party to do the direct deposits. This doesn't really work well with our paperless environment. After you have entered hours you can not go back and correct any mistakes you may have made on a payroll deduction. This is frustrating at times. You have to delete the entire payroll, edit the deduction and then re-enter the payroll. This makes the software feel very clunky, an alternative would be to approve the payroll void the incorrect check and then re-run another payroll. Did you know that if you are paying your employees by direct deposit, and have set them up with the free employee portal, no printing is necessary on your end? Employees can log in to their employee portal and download paystubs from their if needed, making your payroll paperless. :) MH Marie H. Pros The migration process to Patriot was very simple and straightforward. The reports are great and some we are able to customize to meet our needs through filters. Recording payments is simple, and running payroll is a breeze. Cons I don't like that I have to open each invoice individually to print them. I would like the ability to select multiple invoices to open at the same time to print. Pros To generate a payroll period, it is straight forward. I appreciate the fact of Patriot taking care of the tax filings. I also appreciated that they automatically added the FFCRA paid leave and paid FLMA leave . I greatly appreciate their customer service personnel. They appear to train them well and are actually helpful either knowing the answer/solution or will inquire with a supervisor to get an answer if at all possible. If not, they are great in following up with an answer or simply responding that they are still researching. Cons Navigating through reports could be improved by having a link on every report window to go back to the Report menu rather than having to use the side menu bar. When navigating EE time cards, it would be nice to have the dates appear at the top of the page as you scroll down to enter other hours to ensure you are entering on the correct day. I would prefer EE timecards would open to the pay period to be entered versus the next pay period due to the date they are entering their hours. Many people end up entering their hours in the upcoming time card versus the time card and time period still to be processed. Improvements to adding Group Term Life income at the end of the year could also be a suggestion. Some reports need to be enhanced utilizing the Department data they have recently added. It needs to be an option on which one sort on. Anniversary reports have difficulty calculating total time for EE who had a break in service. As an accountant, it is simple to set up a new client and get them started with processing payroll correctly. Training them on the software is equally simple. Cons The only complaint I have is that it is not always easy for new clients to process payroll for a Friday direct deposit with a Monday holiday in the same week. New clients need to realize the payroll can be run before getting started on a long holiday weekend. Pros Great Customer support! The payroll, HR, and reports features are very user friendly. If you need help you can get customer support on the phone or chat in about 5 minutes and they will walk you through any changes, access tax docs, advanced reports features, and answer questions on any part of their software you don't understand. Cons They could improve on communication of an important tax change or upcoming withdrawals like- deferred social security deduction. Pros This program is very easy to use and the customer service is amazing if you have even the slightest questions. They even allow to add information that was not done through the program in order to allow accurate records for year end. I can't think of anything against this program. I ALWAYS get issues resolved in one call. The software is easy to use, and the monthly billing price makes a huge difference for customers with weekly payroll. I have one client that is saving hundreds of dollars per month. Pros My clients love the fact that they can process payroll in Patriot (especially using direct deposit) and be done with it. Patriot handles direct deposit, federal, state and local tax payments and filings, generating W-2's, generating 1099's for contract workers, etc. It makes it all very simple. Cons There are really only three things I would like to see changed: 1. If you start a payroll and want to change ANYTHING for ANY employee, you have to abandon all that you have done, change the employee information, and start over. I have clients with 40+ employees and this is something that they dread. I can understand the challenges of allowing the underlying data to be changed, but if it could require just re-entering the employee whose information was changed, that would be huge. 2. If I am helping a client and I want to see what they are seeing, I cannot do it in Patriot. I would love to see a read-only mode for consultants so that we could see what our client is seeing. We do this by screen sharing now, but that is an additional hassle. 3. I would love to see an option to group the data that is downloaded to QB Online, but still shows detail. For example: list every gross payroll item, consolidate employer taxes into one entry, consolidate direct deposit withdrawals into one entry, consolidate employer and employee payroll taxes paid into one entry. I do this as a favor for some of my clients, but it would be great if it were done automatically.
