With a very small business turning to S Corp. status, an accountant wanted us to hire him and his full on bookkeeping service costing thousands a month and that pill was extremely hard to swallow when sometimes we don’t even make that much per month in profit. I found patriot and not only did we not need to hire the bookkeeping service, we were also able to fire the accountant and do all of our taxes, accounting, and payroll from my humble little laptop at home. Patriot allowed this do it yourselfer the chance to save tons of money and learn new skills at the same time, thank you! Cons Sometimes the link between the software and bank and credit accounts will disconnect/fail but many times thats more the fault of the bank rather than the software. Customer service is amazing in those circumstances though! It was easy to setup and takes very little time each week to complete a payroll. Reports are easy to run and I can quickly see the time off by category for each employee. I don't have to worry about filing quarterly or annual payroll taxes because it is handled by Patriot. Pros Patriot Software is in the cloud so I can run payroll from anywhere, not just in the office. I can also run a payroll the week before it is due in case I am on vacation. It was easy to set up and has excellent technical support. Cons Patriot Payroll has all the important features we need for our business. Review Source SH Susan H. office manager Alternative Medicine Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Really good pros, not without cons" January 16, 2021 4.0 Some things that were easier on the old manual system (eg., changing the state UI rates as you have to every year) are frustrating on Patriot as you have to wade through multiple "help" categories and go through a whole multistep process. I found there will be a very good explanation on how to do anything you need to do SOMEWHERE but finding it can be challenging and time consuming. This was generally a better option than trying to get help from phone or instant messaging, however, and i was never able to email them questions - you will get dumped into FAQ land and have to log out and back in to get out of there. Overall, though , doing payroll is light speed faster. Pros Such a timesaver over doing the payroll manually like i have done for the last 35 years! The W2s and W3 was literally pushing a few buttons instead of spending hours calculating and documenting. Doing the paychecks is also a breeze after the initial setup. Cons The six month "free trial" is not real. It starts (non-negotiably) from when you express interest in signing up and with all the hoops they made us jump through, including opening a new bank account, it had expired before we actually got the program up and running. You also have to sign a waiver stating you are responsible for checking the reports to guarantee their accuracy. The only way i could realistically do that is do it manually and then what would be the point of paying for the software?? For Mac, the software does not seem to work as well as it must for PC. I had multiple problems in getting set up where i couldn't see the full screen or things were hidden or overwritten so as to be invisible and the help people could not help me at all, as even with supposed screen sharing they could not see what i was seeing. Reason for choosing Patriot Software Gusto and Paychex were more expensive, and though Wagepoint was my first choice initially there was a problem that dropped them out of the running - maybe not compatible with Mac? Pros This software was very easy to use, and as my business grows I am finding the necessary features needed are available to me. Whenever I have called customer service, I usually have gotten a person that is knowledgeable and is able to help me. There have been times that the person called has not been able to help me, and was able to escalate my issue to someone that could. Cons Changes to setting sometimes allow changes that are incomplete. In 2019, I added the accounting software to Patriot Payroll. I updated settings in "Payroll Integration Options" but missed some. I was able to save the partial data and run a payroll. When reviewing the accounting journal entry that was generated from the first payroll with the accounting software, I saw the JE generated was incomplete. If I had not checked to verify this JE was correct, this would have been difficult to track down later. This is a big miss, and there should be some warning or stop to prevent this (incomplete data) from happening. Owner Financial Services Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Great for tight budgets" January 14, 2021 4.0 Overall, Patriot has been a great tool and it freed me from the clutches of Intuit, maker of Quickbooks. I spend a fraction of what I used to pay Intuit and I get more features with better customer service. I also looked at Gusto and Paychex, but Patriot was the cheapest option with the most features, hands down. Pros I signed up as a Partner and got 50% discount off the retail rates. I like that the full service payroll handles all the tax remittances and reporting. Plus, I generated W-2s with the click of a button. Cons My biggest disappointment was the 4 day lead time on Direct Deposit. We typically set up pay periods to end on Saturday, so we had to run payroll on Monday in order to make direct deposit show up on Friday. That left no cushion of time and a holiday pushed the direct deposit back to the following Monday! The "solution" was to Prefund the Payroll by giving Patriot a "Deposit" that they used for each payroll and then "refilled" to the set amount. Luckily, this worked for my some of my clients, but many of them can't afford to tie up that much cash. This may be a deal breaker for some companies. January 11, 2021 4.0 Pros With one minor exception, I like absolutely everything about Patriot Payroll. There's a joke that says lawyers went to law school because they can't do math. Well, although I can do math, I DON'T understand payroll. Moreover, I don't have a lot of time to spend on payroll for only two employees. Patriot makes it easy. I use direct deposit (unless I lose track of time, and have to use manual paychecks), and my payroll takes less than five minutes. I also appreciate that Patriot makes it very clear when, and how much, money is going to be deducted from my account. That's critical when I have to keep track of money transferred from my Trust Account. I operated another small business several years ago. There was no Patriot Payroll then, and paydays were a form of torture to me then. I recommend Patriot Payroll for anyone who doesn't do math or accounting -- even lawyers. Cons My only complaint (actually, more of a mild irritation) with Patriot Payroll, is that it is somewhat cumbersome when I have to go back and make a change in an employee's base compensation rate. That's something I have to do fairly often (usually to my self) because if money is tight on a given payday, I reduce my own salary to meet the availability of funds. We are Full Service Payroll customers so I can't speak on partial service. I understand there is some manual effort on your part if you take the partial service option. My CPA was amazed that Patriot does Full Service payroll for what they charge. Like the Accounting Software, it's pretty basic compared to Quickbooks but if you only have a a few employees it's not a big deal. I also like that if you have a payroll question on "Why is this happening" they can answer it. Sometimes the answer goes beyond the functionality of the software and that's ok that their team will do that. Customer Service is excellent. Highly recommend Patriot. Pros The full service payroll is totally "hands off". They do everything, including filing reports. For the price it's a bargain. I can run Payroll in less than 5 minutes. The Wizard works well. If you make a mistake, delete the run and start over. Software is highly Available, as it is in AWS as I understand. Have never had an unplanned outage. If you are looking at the Payroll, consider the Accounting package also as the integration is totally seamless. Cons The reports can be confusing, but that's not an issue with the software, it's because I'm not an accountant. YTD reporting could be a little better. Pros I spent 35 Years as a controller and then Chief Financial Officer and now run my own small company. I have worked with some of the most complex accounting systems out there so it was nice to try Patriot and discover it can do essentially everything the big expensive systems do but on a small scale and at a much smaller price. Cons I really hove no complaints and the few questions I have asked have always been answered immediately . All of them were user mistakes vs. Patriot. Cons Poor User Interface and function design. Example 1: Should be able to get a list of unpaid invoices with one click. Right now, it requires me to input a date range. Date range should be an option, not a requirement. Small thing that adds up over time. I look at lists like that one everytime I log on. Ex 2: Invoices require per hour or per unit. I do not wish to communicate projects to my clients in this way. Would like to freely input amounts per my description to my clients. Ex 3: I've had lots of trouble with imported transactions. You must add a memo field per transaction! Not sure what else to recommend specifically. Hopeful you will continue to evaluate and redesign how that is done. Loved the live book keeping but when I called the payroll dept to find out what they had to offer they started the payroll when I told them not to because I wasn't sure if our EIN was going to change because we applied for Sub S corporation status. When I called and informed them that i did not approve of the start for the payroll and that i wanted a refund they never refunded the monies. I had the name of the person that helped me and the date and time. To no avail no refund. So I lost trust in them and in the end they lost a customer.
