I have used it for building both internal and external sites. I have also used it to build and host enterprise level custom web applications. The biggest benefit I have seen using SharePoint is its seamless connectivity with Microsoft Office products. It adds a lot of values and helpful if your organization is already using Microsoft Office products. Pros SharePoint has evolved into a enterprise collaboration platform. It can be used to collaborate effectively with enterprise level users - both internal and external. It can be used to host applications which can be very effective for internal/external communication and collaboration. Its search is the best enterprise level search, specially comparing toe any other Content Management tool. With new modern user interface, SharePoint has adapted itself well for mobile interface. Cons Performance, specially when collaborating with large content. It is an adequate solution for these needs but leaves some things to be desired. Pros Convenient way to share files in and outside of your organization. It is truly loaded with good features; whether or not your instance will be capable of utilizing them all is another question (see cons). Cons Occasional integration issues with Microsoft's other apps such as OneNote. I had the hardest time moving a OneNote from one SharePoint to another and wound up having to do so one page at a time. SharePoint lists are our only recourse within my company for external user request tracking, and they are clunky at best. Users do not like the front-end form no matter how much tinkering we do in the provided form design tools SharePoint Design and Infopath. Poor visibility of who has access to what. The permissions hierarchy and inheritance is just not clear, and clean-up of any SharePoint you take ownership of will be a hassle. Many useful and seemingly rudimentary tasks are made difficult by integration issues with our corporate network, however this could have as much to do with our excessive security protocols than SharePoint. As such, I have not considered it in this review's score but gone ahead and included this complaint as a point of reference for anyone considering adopting SharePoint at their company. If your company's infrastructure and security model is already difficult to navigate, then it is unlikely you'll be able to take full advantage of what SharePoint has to offer without a very talented implementation team. The ability to leverage metadata and views remains a slight unique advantage. As an authoring platform (eg Wikis), SharePoint is truly showing its mileage and old age. Pros SharePoint, especially when bundled with Office 365, is great bang for bucks. No other collaboration platform offers tighter integration with MS Office on this planet (yet). For a Microsoft-centric organization running Active Directory (AD) and Exchange, SharePoint conveniently offers 20% of the features that 80% of end-users need. Cons Real-time collaboration unbelievably still lags behind G Suite. Recent releases have made rapid improvements to catch up, but lockout issues arise frequently. Versioning was a SharePoint’s strength few years ago. Box has surpassed SharePoint, both in terms of reliability and capabilities. SharePoint has been around since 2001 and gone through more than half a dozen major versions. It is unclear how committed Redmond is to SharePoint. With the license, we can build a layer of sites to keep the information confidential. Cons Maintaining SharePoint can be a bit complicated for all but the most well-versed user. It's adequate, but it's very difficult (unless you have an expert on site) to keep the site "living" and so people forget about it and go back to their habits of saving their files elsewhere and communicating through the myriad of other means we now have. Pros As of a few years ago, this seemed to be the best price for our non-profit budget and did allow us to be paperless for much of our HR processes, the organization's electronic storage needs, and communication as well. Cons I haven't had to research or implement an intranet tool recently, so not sure what is out there currently. I hope and pray for those of you that read this that there is another option other than SharePoint--here's why: Unless you have an EXPERT on your team that you NEVER let go from your organization and that person (or another person) is proficient in InfoPath (the designing tool to create pages on SharePoint) I would HIGHLY suggest you find another solution for your organization. Neither SharePoint or InfoPath are easily understood even if you want to create a simple form on your site. I use it daily to review my team's work. There is also a handy feature - Library/Open with Explorer - which allows to view (and populate) data as if in explorer, so you don't have to load/extract files individually. It still saves the name of the user who made any amends. Pros We have users among several different cities and countries. We mainly used share drives before, but for more important documents SharePoint is better suited. \* You can grant/remove access to any other employees without raising requests like you have to with share drives \* You an grant access to external contractors and external Audit who cannot get access to share drives. \* You can keep all previous versions, and see who and when changed it \* Easy for reviewing data - select your status, and you can be preparer, approver, etc. Cons No minuses.
