### " Powerful but complex"

March 3, 2025

4.0

Drupal offers powerful content management capabilities with excellent flexibility, but comes with a steep learning curve. The module ecosystem provides solutions for most requirements, though implementation often requires technical expertise. Performance is good when properly configured, but maintenance and updates can be challenging.

Pros

Extensive customization possibilities if you know what you're doing.

Cons

Hard to learn, but there is a lot of information online.

### "A Legend! Flexible, scalable ans secure. 10/10 "

October 15, 2025

5.0

We have managed to build several projects, both for established and new to the market clients. Every aspect desired was implemented using Drupal architecture and we covered successfully everything in good time. The major positives are: scalability - amazing as the extension posibility is great! Proper integrations, various databases and interface wise options are a bliss!

Pros

Top notch CMS, powerful if it is properly implemented and adjusted to fot the purpose. The fact that it is truly open source makes it legendary. Excellent flexibility and endless configurations are all offered. Highly recommend!

Cons

The PHP configuration might requiere some skills or in some cases, specific skills. This is not an issue as the adaptability of the databases is part of it.

### "Drupal Review"

February 18, 2025

3.0

I didn't have a bad experience with Drupal but it became more work than I had time for.

Pros

Drupal was my first attempt at CRM website development. It was a good introduction

Cons

The more I tried working with Drupal the more weaknesses appeared from their 3rd party vendors.

### "Flexible CMS for professional sites"

January 6, 2025

4.0

My experience overall has been great, with fast to moderate development time and some extra time dedicated to hardening.

Pros

Drupal is a flexible CMS that I can use for robust projects. It allows great customization and has a wide offering in terms of add-ons backed by the open source community or some companies.

Cons

It requires technical php skills to make custom adjustments. It also require you to study a lot about how to enforce greater security. Many plugins are abandoned so you need to be careful when using features that are not native.

### "Drupal is a fantastic CMS"

July 29, 2019

5.0

I like it a lot but because of their update cycle it should only be used on projects that have a lifespan of 5 years or less.

Pros

Views is the best thing about Drupal. Pre-Views, Drupal is a decent CMS, perhaps a bit more logical than WordPress, but with a lot less users it's hard to justify it. However with Views, you can make advanced applications with a pretty easy to learn interface. It's really, really close to a visual programming language, although there are still some things you'll need to break out the code for. I also really appreciate that most of the modules don't make too many assumptions. With WordPress, I constantly have to fight against styling and strangely formatted HTML inserted by plugins, and that's less common with Drupal modules.

Cons

It requires a fairly beefy hosting setup and a good caching setup to perform well. I also strongly, STRONGLY dislike that sites created five years ago now HAVE to be rebuilt, or they are not secure. That may be fine for enterprise, but it sucks for someone who makes lots of small sites for small businesses. Platforms should be supported for at least ten years IMO, the web has been stable for a while now and there's no good reason to force complete rebuilds. WordPress does this better and manages to continually keep sites upgradeable without a rebuild.

Alternatives considered

[WordPress](https://www.capterra.com/p/131687/WordPress/)[Joomla](https://www.capterra.com/p/161648/Joomla/)

Reason for choosing Drupal

Drupal is a good choice over WordPress for projects that require a searchable database, where Views is at its best. WordPress is a better choice for SEO-focused projects because of Rank Math and other great SEO tools that exist only in the WordPress ecosystem. I don't even understand how Joomla is still a thing. Almost all of its plugins appear outdated. I haven't used it in over a decade, but there's a reason for that.

### "Flexible and Secure CMS for Digital Content Management"

March 16, 2023

4.0

My experience with Drupal has been positive. While there is a learning curve, the flexibility and security of the CMS make it a reliable choice for managing digital content. Additionally, the wide range of integrations and plugins available allow me to customize my website to meet my business needs.

Pros

Drupal is a flexible and customizable CMS that offers a range of features and functionalities for digital content management. It is widely used and has a large community of developers, making it easy to find support and resources.Drupal is known for its security, making it a reliable choice for businesses and organizations.

Cons

Drupal can have a steep learning curve, especially for those who are new to web development or CMS.Customizing and managing a Drupal website can require more technical expertise than other CMS options. Some plugins and integrations can be limited compared to other CMS options.

### "Drupal Was a Decent Option Years Ago but I Would Not Consider it Today"

December 29, 2020

2.0

Drupal has been an affordable content management system for us over the years but I wouldn't consider them now based on there being more user friendly options out there.

Pros

The Drupal content management system is free and the WYSIWYG ( What You See Is What You Get) editor is helpful for those of us who run a website without much HTML knowledge.

Cons

The product is difficult to use with limited coding knowledge. Additionally, there are few plug-ins and the add-ons that do exist are not super reliable as they are essentially created by volunteers.

### "The Supreme CMS"

February 12, 2021

5.0

It was a difficult process to start. I came from Wordpress which was stupid simple, but once I learned Drupal and realized the power it had I was completely sold. It's great for all sizes of projects and has a great community of people using it.

Pros

Drupal's content management struct and philosophy is so robust. It can handle any kind of content, not just blog posts. The ability to model data exactly how you want it and even query and create views is unparalleled.

Cons

The learning curve on Drupal is high. The documentation is cumbersome and so it's difficult to know where to begin without help from somebody who already knows. That said, once you "get" Drupal you'll never look back

Reason for choosing Drupal

While it might have been fun to do, it was just too much to take on when Drupal could do it out of the box.

### "The Best CMS"

February 10, 2021

4.0

Excellent. Very nostalgic to think about my journey with this software. I have built countless websites over the years using Drupal, and my experience has been varied.

Pros

Drupal is, in my opinion, the best open source CMS available. I have seen it grow since version 4.0 and heavily used it right up until version 7. Drupal 6 was the golden era. There are countless extensions, most of which are completely free and built by a passionate community. If you need a fast, reliable CMS for free, this is the first place you should start.

Cons

Since the \[SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN\] left, things haven't felt the same. It has sadly become more up-market and commercial. However the core software and extensions still remain, and it is still probably the best CMS on the market.

### "Drupal has Evolved into a Great CMS"

November 30, 2017

5.0

Peace of mind, in regard to security. With a bit of customization, it makes managing web development projects much simpler and more productive. Releases like Thunder and Lightning hold the potential to become ever-better 'jump starts' toward the ideal CMS for publishing collaboratively.

Pros

Open Source GPL v2.0 or later = no license fees, ever. That's hard to beat, but the fact is that it's the better solution (even if it wasn't free). I've used it before, constantly revisiting; hoping it could be what 8.4.x is now. Know that "Enterprise Level Security" doesn't make it bulletproof, but that there are scores of highly skilled folks constantly pouring over every aspect of this software, with each component required to complete stringent testing before it gets a pass -- using experimental modules 'n such can reduce these benefits, soOo... do your homework. Biggest Pro? It isn't Wordpress. If properly installed and maintained, it's one of the best possible solutions. That's why so many government agencies, or even governments themselves, have built upon Drupal. I have 500+ active domains, and have used Drupal 100+ times or more. It's been our best choice, in most cases.

Cons

Documentation is sorta thin, which is often the case with major releases of open source software solutions, but it isn't that difficult to find answers: People often answer others that have encountered similar problems. The 'steep learning curve' isn't such a hard climb, since there are countless videos and tutorials out there... it's easily worth the trouble, even if you have no background in programming of web development. Installation could be made far simpler (e.g. the 'trusted host configuration' should be set up by the installer itself). But, it is hard to complain when -- sorta ashamed that I haven't put in the hours it takes to affect these changes I'd like to see. Manual (and frequent) updates are a bit of a pain, but it sure beats software that isn't being so actively developed as to require updates. Or, worse still, have nobody watching what the others offer as plug-in. Again: It's hard to complain without having put in nearly the time that countless others have (we all oughta give back, when/where we can ~;-)

### "Rich with features and Highly Secure "

January 19, 2022

4.0

Pros

The best thing is that Drupal is an enterprise level CMS. It provides a lot of security features out of the box and gives it and extra edge over WordPress which generally requires a bunch of extra, paid plugins for such a level of security.

Cons

Customizability is good but it can be better. There is room for improvement when it comes to posting content (posts, embedded media, etc.). Drupal should also provide and support a richer library of themes if it needs to gain more edge over WordPress.

### "Ideal for collaborative work in corporate media"

January 4, 2019

5.0

My overall experience with Drupal has been good, I prefer it as a manager and portal design before others, the only thing that happened is that the platform fell when a news had many entries at a time. We manage a news page and its content search engine is very effective and reliable. And the roles of the users, to execute changes in the page are very useful, in addition the trace is faithful.

Pros

It is an ideal software to edit a corporate communication medium among several collaborators, the allocation of roles to each user, allows the levels of publication and approval to be faithful and thus errors are avoided, as well as assigning or changing roles in the users. It is very easy to use, and the variety of features it brings allows you to alternate with designs and templates, which are very easy to edit and move, without the need to make new purchases or downloads. The drupal community is very knowledgeable and willing to help solve problems. In addition, security levels are higher than other content managers.

Cons

For those who are starting a web page and do not have programming knowledge, it can be difficult to find a lot of modules, but once you take the rhythm you can have a different page in both look and feel and functionalities. It also tends to hang when there are many entries at once to its database; or the server goes down.

### "Drupal is a premium enterprise solution"

November 3, 2019

5.0

We have been using Drupal for over a decade and regularly check it against other products in the field. We still believe this open source project is one of the best on the planet.

Pros

Drupal provides a huge amount of power in a Content Management System. The latest version Drupal 8 is enterprise level software available as open source so while it is free to download and use, you will need a professional to get it doing everything you need. That said, with the right help - you can pretty much do anything online with Drupal. There is also an amazing community to access who will do what they can to help.

Cons

Drupal does require Drupal experts to get the most out of it - if you are new to software and software development, you would be wise to get a consultant or Drupal development company to help. This doesn't come cheap, but it does give you huge amount of power to design and develop exactly the website or software that you want.

### "The most complete to create an excellent content portal"

February 19, 2023

5.0

Using Drupal is a great experience, because it allows you to really be in control of what you want to create. It is very stable and if the goal is to have a CMS that really stands out and looks professional to clients, Drupal is ideal.

Pros

\*It allows a wide variety of possibilities over all if you are looking to create a robust and attractive CMS\*It has integrations with many critical and important modules that allow us to greatly expand the possibilities of our CMS\*Personalization is very easy\*It has a good community where templates, security reports, support and answers to questions or problems are shared.\*It is very scalable. You can use it both if you just want to create a blog, or if you need a portal at a professional level.

Cons

\*Can be a bit overwhelming at first with the amount of customization options and settings\*It has many blocks and modules, this will take you a bit of time to learn how to navigate between the different sections

### "Drupal is more for advanced users/developer "

February 8, 2022

4.0

Initially great as I built the site out, I had to utilize more resources than I wanted or intended. If that was not an issue I may have stayed there but as a smaller company that became an overhead beyond the initial scope of just a time investment.

Pros

It was super fast (which I loved) it was very advanced lots of tools. Customization was fairly straightforward. I also felt like at the time is was very flexible giving the me the ability to integrate other content modes (images, video's etc.) with little effort.

Cons

The initial learning curve was hard. It's not operate out the box system like other CMS programs. As fast it was initially without constant tweaks as you add to site the load becomes a separate job itself. That fact there forced me to find a pay and developer. Not what I had in mind.

Reason for choosing Drupal

It was the first CMS product I ever found. I have previously be html only.

### "Drupal Rocks. for the serious user"

February 2, 2019

5.0

We have created multimillion-dollar Enterprise level sites on a platform is Rock Solid reliable fast I'm downright amazing. You can build something as a simple blog can International multi-level site with Drupal.

Pros

Drupal fully open-source and will run on just about any server operating system. It has a massive worldwide community community that collaborates on security fixes, module creation. What this means is If You Can Dream It Drupal can do it Loggins & themes won't cost you a penny. This is in stark contrast 2 enterprise-level modules that are pay only when working on the WordPress platform. Some of the biggest Enterprises in the world use Drupal including Conde Nast, Sony and even the White House.

Cons

The one drawback to Drupal is the learning curve is extremely high is not for the faint of heart but for those that are willing to put in the time you can build anything stable fast and secure with Drupal.

### "More Powerful than WordPress but Only if you have a Developer, not for DIY"

April 26, 2019

4.0

In my previous job, I used Drupal daily for about two years and managed 10 websites in 4 languages. I had admin rights on some and helped build and configure custom blocks as well as launch new sites. However, most admin work was done by developers.

Pros

In many ways more powerful and customizable than Wordpress and of course drag and drop CMS systems. The ability to build page templates and quickly generate new pages and content is great, easier than in WordPress. Works well for professional business sites, especially with 100+ pages but not great for small sites.

Cons

\-Hard to do much without a developer -Less user friendly than WordPress -No tree view for your website (like Typ03 or File Explorer) -General User Interface not intuitive and many options hidden or difficult to find -Supports localization, but gets messy with multiple languages and hard to keep an overview -Even experienced marketers or Wordpress users can't install and set it up themselves like WP -Less support and plugins than Wordpress, though more than others like Typ03

### "Powerful CMS with enormous flexibility but an uncertain future"

March 24, 2016

4.0

I've been using Drupal since version 5, in 2007, and I rely on it for approximately half the sites I manage. It's enormously powerful, can be customized in any conceivable manner, and offers a vast array of modules and themes, most free. This power and flexibility comes at the price of a complex codebase, however, which can be slow to render and subject to database corruption. Drupal also suffers from a fixed release structure with dramatic architectural changes between releases, meaning that updating heavily customized Drupal sites to new major versions is not much less involved than adopting a new CMS framework altogether.

Pros

You can do anything with Drupal. Some things are even easy: setting up a basic blog is trivial, plenty of options are available for turnkey themes, and many third-party modules exist to rapidly turn Drupal into a solid framework for everything from e-commerce to social media aggregation to academic collaboration. When it works, it works well, and caching modules exist for every version to defray some of the CPU overhead generated by its large codebase.

Cons

Drupal's development community has opted for a fixed rather than a rolling release structure, which means admins performing major version updates incur a steep upgrade penalty in terms of changes to add-on options, basic code, and theme engines. From version 6 to the new version 8, Drupal has changed virtually everything, and as a result, many deployed users linger on increasingly insecure older versions, while many module developers and third-party integration teams have abandoned Drupal altogether as a result of the ongoing investment necessary to stay abreast of codebase changes. Finally, Drupal's own documentation is fragmentary and often self-contradictory, which can make educating oneself extremely time-consuming.

### "Powerful open source alternative to WCMS monoliths "

February 11, 2021

4.0

There is no task too big or complex for Drupal but hire an expert to guide you in crafting the right system for your business needs.

Pros

Drupal is incredibly flexible and extensible and beats most other WCMS’ hands down for its security credentials. If you’re in the business of building bespoke applications - be them marketing and sales orientated websites, heavy information Rich websites, high volume article-based websites or complex, personalised digital products - Drupal’s ceiling is hard to reach.

Cons

Because it’s so flexible, it requires more specialist expertise and better planning to setup. Also, the admin UI has - until recently - been quite poor. The Gin theme offers a lifeline but it is not yet under Drupal’s security advisory policy.

### " this CMS is very flexible, and the inclusion of modules you can do different things in the portals"

May 24, 2018

3.0

Pros

1.) It is a very complete CMS since it includes many features by default, so you do not need to install extensions or modules to create any type of web (blog, store, discussion forum, corporate, etc.) in very few Steps. 2.) While other CMS are very oriented to a type of web, for example Magento is a specialist in large online stores, or WordPress is optimized for blogs, Drupal offers the possibility of adapting to many formats in a simple way. 3.) Great capacity of user administration. From the control panel you can edit in a very efficient way the permissions of each user, create user groups and manage all the access points. 4.) Simple graphic editing. Within its multiple functions allows you to make simple graphic editions of the template or the landing without having to leave the editor. 5.) All the content is structured which allows us to re-use it in different landings.

Cons

1.) Although its functionalities are multiple, its installation requires a little extra knowledge, especially when compared to its competitors WordPress or Joomla !. 2) It is a very modern CMS, so if you are from the old school, it may be difficult for you to adapt a bit to your structure. 3.) It is not prepared for the management of big data. In the event that our website has a lot of content or is a great blog, or an online store with hundreds of Drupal articles will leave us a little thrown, because it generates too many requests to database and does not manage the information in an effective way. 4.) It also does not support much traffic. If your website starts to have many visits be careful, since you can suffer constant drops from the server.

### "Great CMS - highly customizable"

July 29, 2019

5.0

Drupal is great! It's best-in-class when it comes to an open source web CMS. I'm a huge fan!

Pros

Super customizable, love the features available, love the development community overall, and I really enjoy the updates in Drupal 8. We recently updated from D7 to D8 and everything about D8 is better, from its mobile-first design to its back-end CMS functionality.

Cons

It's hard to use Drupal if you don't have developers on staff or if you don't have the budget to retain a development shop that specializes in Drupal. Some of their app integrations aren't super friendly either and require a LOT of development time (read: money) to make happen
