Director of IT, Operations, Compliance Used the software for: 3-5 years ### "Mimecast is super-annoying" October 16, 2026 1.0 I hate it. I wish our MSP would recommend something else. It is really annoying and stops me from getting work done. Pros It seems to work well enough, but it has one seriously annoying drawback. It is super-annoying, crazy-annoying. Cons Mimecast is okay, but it has one very annoying drawback. The biggest issue is how it handles email "deferral". Mimecast likes to sometimes hold email messages for some period of time (1-60 minutes in theory, I think) just in case it is the first of many spam messages. Often, these messages are account verification or password reset emails, which are increasingly necessary due to heightened security accross all services. This makes Mimecast exceedingly annoying to use. Furthermore, if I login to Mimecast and "permit" these messages, they are NOT accepted or released. Mimecast could fix this if they cared about their end users, but I get the impression that Mimecast just doesn't care about their end users. Review Source Mikey B. Cons It can significantly reduce link opening time. Every link in every email sent, is getting Mimecast protection, which does take a bit of time to then open as Mimecast screens it. Pros The archiving is simple to setup and use and runs automatically without any ongoing effort. Archived email is readily accessible via the Outlook plugin or the web directly and is easy for users to use to find archived email. Cons The only part of Mimecast that I am not a big fan of is their admin console. I find it to be kludgy and slow and not designed with ease of use in mind. Review Source DT Daniel T. It does eveything you want and also provides lots of stats and metrics if these are needed. Pros Not just a spam filter also includes functions like URL protect. Also Support is always helpfull Cons Some fine tuning need on some of the features e.g. the spam score, some times level 3 lets nothing through but level 2 will let most emails through. It has reduced the need for users to call IT for email related requests as well as allow our organization to meet regulator requirements for email retention. Pros We love the features that allow our end-users to search their own mail archives without needing to call IT. We also like that it allows end users to manage their own spam filtering within the app and from the Outlook plugin software. We brought it in primarily to improve phishing protection, stop spoofed domains, and get a handle on attachment/URL-based threats. Pros Their impersonation protection has caught some very targeted BEC attempts that slipped past Microsoft’s native filters. The attachment sandboxing and URL protection are solid—particularly the time-of-click rewriting, which gives me a peace of mind when users go digging through old emails. The reporting abilities helped develop and continue to help improve our metrics program. Cons You’ll want to fine-tune the policies. Out-of-the-box settings are a bit aggressive, and we had to safelist a handful of legitimate newsletters and partners after some initial noise. We continue to get slip ups even after safelisting some legitimate domains/senders. The UI is kind of clunky and as we continue to build policies it is living up to the complexity that others have mentioned in other reviews. Pros I recently explored Mimecast to find a solution for our company's email signature. The beauty of it is its ability to get your signature to work across all devices (computer, tablet, mobile) without any configuration on each device. Cons Mimecast has its own set of HTML codes to incorporate certain elements to the email signature, and that makes it more complex as they are not compatible with certain common HTML commands. Pros In terms of blocking phishing attacks, sandboxing, URL filtering, and analysis performing as the best solution in the market. Email archiving and securing the messages and sending large files of some additional features really helps the customers to make use of it. Cons Mimecast is feasible for small or SMB customers as it is expensive and there are other tools that play a bigger role in such a market. Its configurations are not so easy and it takes 2-3 days to synchronize and to completely use its full features. It is a premium product with a non-premuim price tag. We could sell Mimecast in any of our solutions and the client could see the immidiate effect in their mailboxes, especially on the spam side. Pros As a old Resseler I totaly loved this product. Loved selling it, giving training on it and see it work within my partner base. Everyting and every funvtion just works with this product. As a South african , up and downtime are to big words we use . The mail continuity it brings is fantastic . The archiving helps so much especially with end users who is a bit more "IT impared".The chalkboard training is fantastic and I would recommend any MSP or mail service provider to add this to their product set. Our user base has really taken to the product, so much so that a few wondered what had happened to all of their spam! Pros Mimecast is very good at catching spam before it hits a user's inbox. It also has great features like attachment sandboxing which are eye opening. Cons Mimecast can be daunting to get set up initially; there are many different configuration screens which all work together. Configuring policies can be confusing, but support is quite capable and you should make use of that resource as you get things up and running. Pros The level of granularity in policy creation while still being robust and easy to use. Cons Troubleshooting, although easier than some software, can be difficult to do via tracking. We've tried chasing down messages that triggered a policy despite being exempt, only to find it was some nuance of how that one policy worked. Pros I like that it not only scans and detects malicious/junk emails, it also protects users from links that they click on - scanning the web page before it opens. Cons I don't like the portal that the junk emails go to. It is not that user friendly but thankfully I don't need to login to it all that often. Pros I have use this software as additional to protect and secure my email in the Microsoft Office 365. It is quite easy to use and i can setting it up independently by following the guides that are provided. It has protection over malicious email or spam email and block it from my main email inbox. Cons Even-tho there are filters for spam emails, the detection rate is not really the best as i still can see some of the spam email manage to be delivered to my main inbox. The email body and the title scream spam email, but unfortunately it can be detected by the filter is bothering me. It also provides as a DR solution for sending and receiving mail. As well as retrieving wrongfully deleted mail. Pros MimeCast is an excellent all in one email filter and management tool. MimeCast offers great functionality to block spam and filter any unwanted emails. We use block and allow lists to our benefit for email domains. Mimecast also offers a large range of other features including large file send which is excellent for securely sending large files which may be blocked by normal email due to the size. Cons Mimecast is a great tool, One issue I face with Mimecast is the size of the portal and amount of features that are similar. It can be tricky to find what you need at times. Even it has mimecast personal portal which is very useful to me. Integration was seamless with our other tools. Cloud based operation is great with less of our resources used. Security and protection is top notch. Spam and threat filtering is very effective. Cons If a mail is on hold due to spam policy, The notification to this is delayed by almost 15-20 mins. Pros I like that it keeps the junk from filtering in to the user's mailbox. This helps the user not to have to do the filtering themselves. Also saves the company from the user clicking on something they shouldn't. Cons The customer support isn't what it used to be. They seem not to be as responsive as in prior years. This is also normal.
