Paychex insisted additional state setup was necessary, and our monthly cost jumped from approximately $80 to more than $200. My CPA's office addressed the nexus issue in about ten minutes, yet more than a year later we were still waiting for refunds/credits related to the Paychex issue. What ultimately caused me to leave was not simply the mistake—it was how Paychex handled it. Calls and emails were not returned. Escalating the issue accomplished little because it was repeatedly routed back to the same representative. Meanwhile, we continued receiving persistent calls about buying additional Paychex products. Most concerning of all, I emailed Paychex stating that I was considering switching to ADP. I did not authorize Paychex to cancel my account. Paychex nevertheless canceled the account. There is a significant difference between telling a company you are considering another provider and authorizing cancellation. I ultimately moved to ADP, where my cost after discounts is approximately half of Paychex's standard fees. Paychex did not lose a three-year customer because someone made a mistake. Mistakes happen. They lost a three-year customer because of the lack of response, lack of accountability, failure to resolve money owed for more than a year, aggressive attempts to sell additional services while existing problems remained unresolved, and finally canceling my account without my authorization. If Paychex put the same effort into resolving customer problems as it puts into selling customers additional products, I might still be a customer. Pros The payroll platform itself is straightforward and generally works as expected. For over three years, the basic payroll functions were reliable and comparable to other major payroll providers. Unfortunately, the service and support when an actual problem arose completely changed my opinion of Paychex. Cons Customer service and accountability were by far the biggest problems. Calls and emails went unanswered, escalations were repeatedly sent back to the same representative who was not resolving the issue, and refunds/credits related to a billing problem remained unresolved for more than a year. Ironically, while getting a response about money owed to us was extremely difficult, Paychex had no trouble repeatedly contacting us to sell additional products and schedule sales appointments. I would say that it is the best experience I have had with a product for managing PTO and accessing financial documents like my pay stubs and tax forms. I have not encountered any issues during my time using it. Pros I like seeing how my time off balances are categorized into vacation, bereavement, birthday, personal, sabbatical, self care, and sick hours. It helps that I can check how many hours I accrued and used as well as how many hours I have available. Cons The least thing I like about Paychex Flex is inputting my timesheets, specifically for the times I clock in and out. It is tedious to do, and even more so when I need to update any entry and have to leave a note explaining why for the update. It gives you a much better overall view and makes it easier to keep track of the recurring payroll tasks. Cons When you have to deal with specific payroll requirements, the process can sometimes feel less straightforward than expected. Having everything set up properly from the start is important, because fixing certain issues later on can take extra time. They helped me through payroll runs and that was it, I swapped from paycor to paychex and it seemed to be hell with both. No training just figuring it out myself and also still paying for both :) Pros I like that the portal is user friendly and that running payroll is easy and does not take up much time. Cons That you are kind of left in the dark to figure it out yourself, Paychex should have each trainer reach out to its customer in a timely manner to train their customer and not have sign up buttons a month after using the product for zoom meetings that teach you NOTHING! There are others out there that are more cost effective and pay better attention to your specific needs. Pros It was user friendly. Payroll didn't take long to do. Never had any issues with wrong numbers being submitted. Cons We are a non-profit and exempt from certain Payroll taxes such as unemployment in certain states. Each year Paychex would re-enroll us and I would have to contact the state and un-enroll us. It happened a few years in a row.
