February 1, 2018 4.0 Pros STATA doesn't require a subscription fee, and is quite a bit cheaper than SAS. Also, it's easier to learn and use than many other statistics packages. Cons STATA isn't as powerful as other programs, and there are fewer features. Additionally, it has trouble handling very large sets of data. Professional functionality and wide coverage of statistical methods and tools 2. Easy coding, it is also fast to find different tests by using your mouse to surf 3. Processing speed is fast compared to other statistical software such as SAS Cons 1\. Cost is still too high for average college students, licenses need to be renewed periodically 2. Not much tutorial is available for new users to get familiar with the functionality 3. If it can't do it natively, then there's guaranteed to be a work-around tool available that can be uploaded to the program in seconds. The program comes in several packages, depending on how much data you plan on crunching. With enough time learning its syntax, analysts can turn Stata into their most powerful ally. Cons Stata is not a simple program to master. While certain basic functions are simple enough to pick up and use within a couple minutes, getting a more complete understanding of this program will take a while. The Help function build into Stata will help getting syntax right, but for actually completing some complex functions, the internet will be your best friend. Pros The best thing about Stata is how user friendly it is and how elaborate its official documentation is. Cons The one other software I use a lot for data analysis is Rstudio and I feel Stata could improve on its functionality, especially for time series data and forecasting. Cons The default graph settings are really ugly and tweaking graphs to get them right is an arduous process. This was because of how versatile the software was; enabling the installation of needed extensions, and the presence of a community to provide the needed help. Cons Though it’s powerful, the app is not very user-friendly; you need to learn different code/syntax to run commands/analysis. The visualizations could also use a bit of work. I appreciate the simplicity of STATA but it requires some getting use to if you usually use other software modeling. Pros I started using STATA during my dissertation based on limited knowledge. Given me limited experience working with STAT I found it to be easy to use and get to know over time. I like not syntax based programs and this hit the mark. There are of course ways to point and click but overall STATA gives you the option to follow traditional statistical models and fully understand why those models work. Cons The learning curve for STATA is somewhat steep. It isn’t instantly intuitive which I think could be improved by providing manual support and examples. The lecturer gave us a good knowledge and practice. After that I used it in my research activity, and then I trained others students and researchers how to use it. I must say this software helps realizing better statistics, especially multivariable analysis. The more you work with Stata the more you learn the potential of this software. The tools within Stata are well programmed and self correct most of the time if there is an obvious user error. After some time, it is easy to use. Cons It was difficult to pick up in the beginning and some of the commands are not that intuitive. Economics Student Financial Services Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Used for my Econometrics project, and it does the job" July 19, 2017 4.0 It alllows beginners to implement more advanced econometrics methods, and also is capable of a more in depth customization of all functions and algorithms. Pros STATA 14 was absolutely the best tool (already tried R and Eviews) for my Econometrics project. We wanted to regress the average temperature in brazilian municipalities to find it's relation with the local income data. So we imported a 4.500 lines x 20 columns spreadsheet from excel, and the software did a great job helping us cleaning the data. Also, it ploted 2d and 3d graphics about our regression, helped modeling clustered heterocedastik model, using dummied and controls. Cons I think the GUI is a little outdated, but this is actually default in major statistical software. Other problem is the change in the name of some functions between versions. It is useful, since all I need to calculate I can do it with this software. Pros It is a very professional software, it gives you a lot of possibilities and different functions. It works fast and has minor bugs. Sometimes it even gives you information even than you need. Cons Besides being estetically not very much attractive, it is complicated to use since it works by commands you have to write in the sheet instead of buttons that you press or something like this, which means that when you want to do something you first have to search for the command you need. This implies that either you learn and memorize them or search it at the moment, losing time in the process. If you are not a regular user, that can be bothering. Pros I love how many great features there are in this software. You can do such much with a data set, from regressions, time series, multivariate analysis, to graphics and so much more. I love that you can save your codes to avoid losing your work. Cons I don't like that it can be very complicated to use it at first, since there are so many features.
