### "An IT Pro's Experience with Lightspeed"

June 9, 2017

1.0

I was hired as an IT pro to migrate a customer to Lightspeed. I have just under a decade in migrating large platforms and I have worked with numerous vendors over the years. Based on my experience, you can quickly assess which companies are "Sales Based" and possess no real infrastructure beyond the "Sale". These companies usually have very slick front-end websites, but fall very short when assisting paying customers to actually make use of the service. It is unfortunate that Lightspeed falls into this category. Lot's of promises up front, but obtaining capable support is not possible. Despite escalation and numerous phone calls and emails, not a single return contact was made within a week's time. To be sure, you can get a tier 1 person within usually a day, but they are untrained and are able to answer only simplistic questions. When a request for a supervisor is made or an escalation is requested, communications cease. Compounding this problem is the telephone "Firewall" they have erected around anyone empowered to address even the most basic of concerns. Over a week's time, I have been told supervisors are "Not Available" and will "Call Back" as soon as is possible. A weeks time to return a call to a paying customer is (far) more than sufficient time to allow. Unfortunately, once Lightspeed has your money, you as the customer are "SOL"! As a seasoned professional, it is my opinion that Lightspeed is a poorly run company and shows a troubling and dismissive attitude towards its paying customers. This "treatment" of its clients is well reflected in the reviews here. I am NOT a Lightspeed customer, as I am hired to work between the client and Lightspeed. As an IT professional, watching how this company treats its paying clientele has been disturbing.

Pros

Is very flexible, can be made pretty (if you can figure out the documentation), and does interface with other modules

Cons

The company, the company attitude, and the support it provides to paying customers. The experience during the "Sale" was filled with promises of support and help to move from a new account to a finished "Go-Live" product. Unfortunately, the Lightspeed platform is highly proprietary and therefore, success for most is dependent upon satisfactory support from the company. Here, they fall short of success and short of the promises made. When attempting to work with the company, they fall short again, lacking any of tier 2 or 3 technicians needed to satisfy anything more than a basic question. This leaves so many of the customers without any real ability to make use of what they were sold. This is a company predicated on "Sales", "Sales Pitches" and "Promises", but fails to deliver on what was promised and paid for.

### "This company is all about sales and has no interest in fairness or retaining customers."

June 29, 2017

1.0

I run a tiny seasonal business for which this system was intended. If someone is unhappy with my service, refunding their money is not always my first approach, but if I know that I've fallen short on service, I absolutely look for a fair solution. I was fine with keeping the hardware originally sent to me and even paying for the time lapse on the software, but to say that all software sales are final when they are the one that set the contract lengths to being with is just shady and downright distasteful. It's not like they put money into developing software just for my company. In fact, any time I tried to get support to help tweak things, their support team seemed more annoyed than willing to help. Stay away from these guys.

Pros

I barely used this product. What sold me on it initially were the demos in being able to have a simple interface for my employees on both the retail and restaurant side and a much more detailed backend than square that supposedly integrates nicely with Quickbooks.

Cons

I was very specific about my operating needs. I am also very busy with small children and multiple businesses. The onboarding was described as very simple, and it was not. I needed three systems, and was told that was what I was paying for. They shot me an invoice which I did not read thoroughly enough. They put in fine print on the invoice that the invoice and payment is acceptance or their sales terms which you have to then go to their website to read. Once I asked for the hardware items that they did not send me, they also charged me for a bunch of extra software that were not part of the original sales discussion or even the second sales discussion. They never refunded me for two years of unused software when I decided that I was not interested in doing business with such a shady company. No class.

### "Not what you expect"

October 6, 2022

2.0

Horrible. The support team is fantastic, but they can’t permanently solve issues, just bandaids.

Pros

I liked the design of the software and support was very helpful in temporarily solving issues.

Cons

The software. Inventory management tools were non existent. No permanent fixes for the software crashing every day.

Reason for choosing Lightspeed Retail

It was cheap and they gave us a good deal.

### "LightSpeed Retail POS & Accounting for QuickBooks Desktop"

May 7, 2020

2.0

Custom reporting with LightSpeed Analytics comes as a separate subscription expense. Creating and populating data is time consuming for businesses with multiple locations as the data limit is set at a 5000 row maximum output making quarterly and annual report extraction inefficient. Multiple reports are required to extract data for each location.

Pros

The customer profile and Inventory Item modules are fairly simple to maneuver. Creating a sales transaction is also fairly simple. The POS system itself integrates nicely with Kangaroo for loyalty rewards.

Cons

The Inventory Asset module is severely lacking in accurate financial reporting and auditing. Historical values change in a daily basis making internal and external auditing impossible. Inventory adjustments do not transfer to the accounting system. System is unable to provide total shrinkage or excess in any given period (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual). As inventory & COGS are an essential part of financial reporting, the lack of system capabilities does not make any sense for retail businesses.

### "No customer service "

January 12, 2024

1.0

Terrible. The POS X-series card reader that was delivered was faulty, wouldn’t stay charged and would give error messages when trying to process transactions. The additional equipment wasn’t comparable with our iPads. I left two voicemails asking for support with the faulty ready, never got a call back. Canceled my account and asked for a refund for the card reader and the subscription fee for the month we couldn’t process anything through them (Square stepped in and took care of us). Lightspeed never even responded. I called and spoke with a rep asking for a refund, it took a month for a response and the email was generic with no explanation for declining my request for refund. The company is not for small businesses and doesn’t care about clients.

Pros

There’s nothing I like about the company.

Cons

Customer service and support is nonexistent. Management only communicates through email (absurd). Messages and voicemails aren’t returned. Emails are automated blanket emails.

### "Definitely worth your time to try! "

December 8, 2020

5.0

Pros

We love how easy this was to set up. It does not require buying $20,000 worth of equipment like our first POS system did back in 2008. In fact it can easily be used with just an iPad! We are not computer savvy at all and this system has never confused us or new employees. We love everything about this system! So much that if we ever strike up a conversation with a fellow business owner that mentions they are thinking about a new system you better believe they are going to hear all about this one! You can read all about the features and I could tell you everything that we love or you can just be smart like we were and just try it. If you do want to talk to an actual person that is using the system you can certainly get in touch with one by calling one of the helpful reps at Lightspeed. They will connect you with a business owner that will tell you everything you want to know about their daily experience. It helped us make the decision to pull the trigger and get the ball rolling!

Cons

The only aggravation that I can think of right now happens on the iPad. If I am searching for a specific vendor’s PO. I can’t quickly type the vendor name in. You choose the first letter of the vendor and then you have to arrow down. Pretty dumb to complain about this, I know. It takes seconds really. It also could be me not knowing how to use my computer - I did mention how bad I am.

### "Avoid at all costs - the worst POS system."

April 28, 2021

1.0

Customer support is good (unless you're asking for a refund). They usually respond to emails within 24 hours. And they did try to help with my many concerns and frustrations but the POS system is terrible. - their solution was for me to add an App, Quote Machine, at an extra cost of $100 per month that would give Lightspeed Retail the same features as we previously had on Lightspeed Onsite.

Pros

We have been using the old version of Lightspeed (Onsite) for over 10 years, which worked well for our business but had to change over to Lightspeed Retail when the older version was archived . The only pro of the new version, Lightspeed Retail, is that it can be accessed from any computer.

Cons

This POS system is terrible for retail shops doing anything more than a standard sale. It's unintuitive, confusing, easy to make errors and very frustrating. From the way it creates a sale and an order (confusing and vague with order and 'special order' in little tabs), to the way it handles payments for order (money goes on the customer account, not on a specific order), to creating a PO for the order which is overly complex, doesn't link with the order or bring the customer information over, to basic things like needing to email a customer after the sale is finished (TIP - it's not possible!). It’s extremely frustrating and not user friendly at all. In fact, I think the whole system is deeply flawed and unworkable. After signing up for one year (there wasn't the option to sign up for a shorter period) and trying to persevere for a month, we decided to find a new POS system. (Lightspeed won't refund our balance and kept me waiting for 6 weeks and numerous emails before telling me this.) We are now using Shopify POS and it's brilliant - it's not perfect but it's about three million times better than Lightspeed Retail. No exaggeration :-)

Reason for choosing Lightspeed Retail

We chose to stay with Lightspeed and to move over to their (more expensive) cloud based POS, Lightspeed Retail as we assumed it would be a similar programme (it's not!!).

### "Great system for all small businesses"

November 28, 2020

5.0

Excellent experience with Lightspeed, I would recommend this platform to any small or medium sized business.

Pros

Lightspeed is very user friendly and easy to teach employees how to use it. The reporting is top-notch and they even can help you create custom reports which was very important to us. Customer service is excellent and always very responsive.

Cons

It would be great if it came with a built in CRM or integrated with one like Salesforce. It's great for franchisees, as a small business, but for the franchisor it may not have all the functionality needed to roll it out to the entire corporate system.

### "Run! Don't go with this company "

July 18, 2023

2.0

RUN FAST AND DONT LOOK BACK! Since Vend and Lightspeed merged they have become so arrogant. If I knew what I know now I would never go with Vend/Lightspeed. For the same features you can get systems out their at half price or less. I ended up having to pay for advanced plan to use e-commerce and inventory report which us $279aud per month. They just launched new payment method and are forcing me into using it or I will be charged extra transaction fee for staying with my existing provider. They are straight out rude and arrogant. If I wanted all in one system (which you will be even more trapped) I would have gone with Square from the beginning.

Pros

Nothing. To start with when it was still Vend you can call customer Service and it gets through in 5 minutes . These days you'll be lucky to get through in 15 minutes.

Cons

Everything. Full of lies. Too many changes and extra charges all the time. Be very careful with their sweet offers, they only to trap you in.

### "Transferring from Onsite to Retail after nearly 10 years of service.."

January 17, 2019

4.0

Pros

We have been using Lightspeed POS systems since 2008. As we made our transition from Onsite to the Cloud based server in the Summer of 2018, Lightspeed has gone the extra mile to make sure that their product worked with our relatively unique business. Although not without its stumbles along the way, The reps have gone out of their way to make sure that we are well prepared for whatever may come our way. Both the reps follow-through, attention to detail, and never-ending patience have been exemplary.

Cons

There were some aspects of Retail that were told to us as if they were included, but we soon realized many of the benefits of Retail are add-ons (aka cost extra money) and needed to be heavily jerry rigged to work for our specific business. A lot of small yet important issues, like record keeping of outgoing emails with receipts, or the ability to change a purchase after it has been completed. We used to be able to edit invoices on Onsite, and now even an owner, admin or manager does not have that option. Furthermore, if a customer decides to ship their purchase after it has completed, there is no way to alter the invoice to make it so. Or that we cannot use any of the same labels or gift cards that we once used with Onsite. There are just many small things that were not made clear that we would be losing when we moved over

### "Lightspeed wants your money and does not care about your business."

November 16, 2018

1.0

It is my mission to make sure nobody falls into the trap that Lightspeed sets for it's potential customers. I foolishly signed up for a yearly contract to save some cash as any smart businessman would do. What I didn't realize is that a company needs a POS system specific to their industry because trying to work around certain functions or the lack thereof will slow down the sales process. I realized a little under 2 weeks that this system wasn't right for me so I requested a cancellation of the contract. Considering they offer anyone a free 2 week trial, I thought they would thank me for the opportunity and wish me well in my future endeavors. Especially because I actually put some trust in the company and paid upfront instead of using their 2 week trial with no commitment whatsoever. At the very most I thought they would charge me for a month worth of service at the usual non-discounted yearly rate just to pay for any costs associated with me going through the 2 weeks of service. What came next was a shocker of a response. They actually said because I signed the contract, there was nothing that could be done. What? That's used car sales language. NOTHING? But I only used the system for 2 weeks and you give out 2 week free trials to anyone who asks? NOTHING! But my business will suffer as a result of your system not functioning the way I need it to run. NOTHING! But you guys have a digital product which costs you nothing for me to use and the only expenses incurred by you were the 1 hour of training and 1 hour of customer service I utilized in the entire 2 weeks I used the system which I am willing to pay for. NOTHING!! You signed a contract and that's that!! (Official Lightspeed Motto) After a certain point, they actually told me that it's my decision to use the system or not (well obviously) but they are not giving me back a single Canadian cent. (They're based in Canada). They only care about the almighty dollar (Canadian of course) and the lack of customer concern is mind boggling in this day and age of "no questions asked" business practices. Well Lightspeed, you have my money but you lost my respect. DO NOT USE LIGHTSPEED until you've gone through their 2 week free trial. Even after the free trial I suggest you only sign up for a 1 month commitment to put it through real world scenarios before you fully commit to their 1 year contract because Lightspeed wants their money and you WILL NOT get it back once they have it.

Pros

They have 24/7 customer support, their e-commerce platform is integrated with their retail platform.

Cons

They trap customers in a 1 year contract with no way out. Not designed for the furniture industry but they'll force you to keep using it if you're signed up with them no matter what.

### "It's Not really a POS for retail..well it works front end but Back end..needs work for sure"

April 10, 2022

3.0

Before signing up ...super great, after...it's been a struggle and frustrating.

Pros

The staff can pull up customer and process sales and returns with ease

Cons

The inventory management is really lacking. Retailers are not able to bulk update any inventory qty or pricing changes. The only way to update inventory is scanning one by one or manually entering it into LS. Doing year end is going to be a big problem, we just came on board and Im asking how we can bulk update and they said we can not. I ask if we can send the file to them and they said no they can not update in bulk...WHAT??? LOL that is crazy to think we can not do that. So that means we can not have more than one person doing inventory unless we all manually update it into LS.

Reason for choosing Lightspeed Retail

Big Hairy Dog is super expensive and the people "seem"nice. The retail pro is super slow, unstable and it's like old technology with an updated face to make it look good. My staff hated it, it's way to complicated to take orders for out of stock item just ringing customer up was just not straight forward.

Lightspeed is a great tool and fairly priced for all the time it will make you save. Having an ACCURATE system inventory management is really important nowadays especially if you are selling online. ### "Broad but often shallow"

April 27, 2019

4.0

Pros

Lightspeed has a lot of options and is pretty well integrated. The connection between retail and ecom and loyalty in particular is great. Easy to use, easy to train staff on. Support is geared towards shopkeepers that aren't tech savvy. Look and feel of the software is good. The Retail POS has good reporting, good inventory featrures. The Loyalty add on is a great, easy to use program (with some challenges, so make sure you clarify your needs) and well priced.

Cons

The strategy seems to be "offer a little of everything" - but we have found that means broad functionality, but not deep functionality. In the Retail package, several basic retail store based point of sale features are missing, and according to their customer ideas forum are "Not Planned". Lack of fractional items means you can't use it to sell bulk items or anything where you need to enter a fractional quantity like '1.25'. Promotions and discounts are so limited as to be almost non-existent. While you can take simple % or $ discounts, you can't do item quantity discounts (no BOGO, no case discount), no promotional coupons, very limited automated discounting. Support says "let employees manually add discounts or change prices" which is crazy - a great way to increase shrink and sweethearting at the cash wrap. While you can create custom fields, they don't do anything - can't report on them, can't search on them, can't see them in the transaction. After being impressed with the initial demo (the broad functionality led us to believe it was deep as well) and the friendly sales team, we were super surprised during implementation that we couldn't do 50% of the things we needed to do during the actual cash register sales transaction. The ecom side seems to be more complete - it actually does have item/quantity discounts. The only challenge we have had there is lack of support (without paying extra for a third party add-on) for local delivery.

HORRIBLE! They will mislead you to get you into the contract. They do not care about the business or business owner. Their customer service is Horrible. They would rather argue with you than help you and never call back when they say they will. I have been with them for 3 years and would love to get out but they have me locked in for another year and they won't budge. THERE IS NOW WAY TO STOP YOUR EMPLOYEES FROM DOWNLOADING YOUR ENTIRE CUSTOMER BASE AND INVENTORY INCLUDING COSTS, PROFITS, AND MARGINS. Try it. Log in as an employee and click export in the items screen or the customer screen. In two clicks they have your entire business. Managers can not build, send or check in purchase orders without seeing all costs and profits. Unless you plan to always be in store and never have employees alone in the store DO NOT GO WITH LIGHTSPEED. They don't care and will just keep coming out with new items to charge for that should just be ongoing upgrades to their core system such as the new analytics. They have come out with over 4 new items to charge for while not fixing the issue they knew about for over two years. They just don't care.

Pros

Good looking, can be used easily. The software itself isnt horrible it is the service and the fact that they dont care about you or your business and they will not fix major issues within the software

Cons

Customer service is horrible, your employees can down load all items with costs, profit, margin, and your entire customer base and there is no fix and they don't care.

### "Lightspeed for Small Business"

January 25, 2024

5.0

Our overall experience has been very good - I have much more control over inventory, discounts, more robust reporting, and human error estimated.

Pros

Inventory, POS, Reports, and discount features are all easy to configure and use.

Cons

When completing an End of Year inventory count, you must submit the entire count before seeing the total cost of products counted.

Talech is not meant for Retail. Lightspeed had many of the featured I required for a retail sporting goods store with a smaller budget.

### "Not a good fit for a liquor store/smoke shop/bar"

March 21, 2022

2.0

This has been a very frustrating experience. The demos looked great. In theory, most of the features and processes look amazing, but do not work in real life situations. Again, maybe this was just a very poor fit for our store, but I wish someone would have cautioned me before my purchase.

Pros

There are some good features for discounting when buying multiple items (2 for $xx)

Cons

Extremely poor design of software. Not intuitive. Funcationality we needed was not available. Some work arounds available but very clunky. Support is very slow. Typically 20 min wait for phone support. Customers will not wait that long to make a purchase. No app available. I could go on..

Reason for choosing Lightspeed Retail

Reorder reports, POs, Inventory management, and a credit card reader that was attached to the register. All of these things were disappointments.
