Pros: The accuracy and ease of use to get started has been great and then once you get into it you realize that there is so much more to the program and that you are only scratching the surface of what the software can do.

Cons: The feeling that if I only had more time to commit to explore the software I would be able to do so much more with it.

Overall: The ability to quickly and accurately develop complete estimates for our clients.

Use OST for budgeting and bidding large building construction projects.

Pros: Ability to quickly preform takoffs on multiple drawings. All of the drawing takeoffs are summarized in a table to use in our estimating software.

Cons: Setting up the different types of takeoffs needed can be time consuming up front. Also dislike, loading the drawings into the software program.

Overall: Time savings

Pros: Easy to learn and use. Everything in one software. Worth the money. I would recommend this product to any organization who work on a lot of high end estimates.

Cons: No cons but they could try doing new features like adding color to areas to differentiate between them.

Pros: Easy to use, easy to copy conditions from one project to another, very user friendly. The software features a lot of different options mark up and bubble changes, type in comments, and, of course, color code take offs.

Cons: Creating overlays can be difficult, it would be great to have more color options and an easier way to scale and align two plans.

Comments: I've used OST for 10 years and overall satisfied. I think for the annual service fee, there should be more upgrades than once every 2 years or so. We have used tech support maybe once a year if that and the owner of the business doesn't think that justifies the annual cost.

Pros: It's easy and quick to use and easy to train others. I like and use the overlay function a lot. I also like the intelligent paste function as well for repetitious items.

Cons: Only 1 overlay possible, needs ability to remove the original plan and add an additional overlay as plans change (i.e.,80% dwgs to 90% dwgs to final dwgs. The 90% supersede the 80% and now we have final. A new bid file has to be created and the takeoff copied to the new file for adjustments) Database bogs down on very large projects Auto count feature doesn't work very well on scanned plans

Good - admittedly, I have not availed of available training.

Pros: Great customer service and mostly intuitive; Also, we are not restricted to "solid" color, which helps decrease memory requirement.

Cons: Based on limited exposure, the program has a hard time maintaining color and contrast uniformity between areas of a floor plan that are set in a standard North/South & East/West axis as compared to areas of a floor plan that are set at an angle and require alignment. Also the "Linear" condition gets corrupted when used in areas of a floor plan that are set at an angle and require alignment.

Overall: Helps in creating electronic shop drawings.

Pros: ability to create basic assemblies that I can modify as needed for individual projects. this is a big time saver.

Cons: We have had some glitches with uploading plans from our drop box. Other than this I have no complaints.

Using OST we are able to perform take offs much quicker than using a ruler or than digitize(ing).

Pros: Ease of use and how easy it is to review work. Being able to assign different take offs to different area's makes breaking out bids for alternates very easy.

Cons: I would like to be able to "crop" or cut all take offs to assign them into an area. For example, if the portion of a building becomes an alternate after the takeoff was performed. I would like to slice each take off to break out each area. Right now you can select multiple takeoffs and reassign but if you select say a wall that was one take off but you want it to be cut in half you have to delete it and redo the takeoff.

Overall: Can probably do triple the amount of estimating than before.

Pros: In OST it is possible to become very creative in how you make conditions, it allows you to build your take-offs in a manner that makes sense to you, and you are able to constantly refine and make adjustments to the way you do things, which allows for faster take-offs. And the progression just continues.
Also the tech team that comes with the subscription cannot be beat, those people are the best software fix my stuff in a heartbeat group...period paragraph no more conversation about it!!!

Cons: Sometimes the General Exceptions box pops up and when it closes it resets some of my preferences, however its very simple to readjust and be moving again.

Pros: Ability to accurately quantify count, area, volume, and more on drawings with a high degree of complexity. We use it to count washroom accessories, confirm tile flooring quantities, area of roof, and others when tendering the project. During construction, we use it to track progression and productivity rates.

Cons: Printing can be tedious / counterintuitive. Also, the software auto-saves progress, which is great unless you make a mistake...

Overall: This is the fastest way that I know of to complete a takeoff. Once you have a good grasp of the user interface, it becomes second nature and takeoffs can be performed by anyone.

Pros: Our estimators can quickly and accurately do takeoffs. They can create templates to speed up the takeoff process, quickly modify existing takeoffs when changes are made to the plans.

Cons: The license management of the tool is frustrating. When we have slow Internet connections or connecting over our VPN we can not get a license. Most of my estimators have to borrow the licenses when working from home.

Pros: menu driven and easy to follow. Every time I have a problem and call support I get a good response and the problems solved.

Pros: The take-off and estimating software is much simpler to use and faster than other software I have used. This allows me to bid more jobs while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

Cons: The shortfall of this software in my opinion is that it doesn't have a native accounting companion. Other software suites offer an accounting component built-in which is a great way to tie your whole company together. The export functions are not quite good enough to accomplish that.

Overall: Fast and accurate take-offs and estimates.

Pros: This program is great for our office and field personnel. Both can see the entire scope of work to be performed and know where each condition is to be applied on each floor of our jobs. Allows for better management of our labor hours and cost accounting too!

Cons: That I cannot download it on my iPhone! I have absolutely no complaints, I love, I use it everyday and I enjoy all of the features too! Just wish I could take it with me everywhere I went.

Overall: It not possible to mention them all here. Better accuracy in our estimates. Greater flexibility with our estimates too. Can change conditions very easily if necessary. Our field personnel loves it too. Were able to print all of the plans from any project and breakdown the estimate by floor or zone or phase.

Comments: Before buying I compared this, E-Takeoff, Planswift, and Bluebeam takeoffs. This was hands down the best option.

Pros: Easy and intuitive to use. Some examples are- same copy paste functions as every other windows program, bulk copy (multiple takeoffs), fast plan loading, and a user interface that flows nicely.

Cons: Somewhat complicated to learn, the overall process makes sense, but you need to follow the steps to the letter.

Comments: I have been an On-Screen Takeoff user since 2008. The program is well designed, but the company has made the program non-macintosh user-friendly. I used the program in a Virtual Environment without issue for 8 years, and then OST stopped allowing the program to be utilized in a virtual environment (Parallels Desktop). They now require you to have a Windows Machine running License Manager (at all times) to utilize their product. Simply unacceptable. They have no regard for their Customer.

Pros: The product is well designed and easy to use (except for the what is necessary to run the program on a virtual environment).

Cons: Cannot run the program in a Virtual Environment.

Recommendations to other buyers: Don't purchase this program if you utilize a Mac. They are not Mac friendly.

Comments: I have been using On-Screen Takeoff for several years now and I really enjoy using it. It is easy to set up conditions and perform the takeoff. I enjoy that you can break your takeoff out by areas and you can even create folders for the different areas of the takeoff. This works well for breaking out by CSI, or whichever WBS you may use. Also, OST can store data in Access databases that can be set to backup on a schedule. I personally like how quickly I can bring my drawings into the software and how quickly they load once in the program. Overall I have been using OST for several years now and I would recommend it to the construction professional.

Pros: Ease of use Ability to create libraries of commonly used conditions Customer support Fast Loading Ability to transfer data to other estimating software Ability to export to excel Ability to share entire takeoff file with other professionals

Cons: Cannot currently import an excel document with conditions to create a library Cannot trace drawing lines automatically

Recommendations to other buyers: After using a few different types of takeoff software, On-Screen Takeoff is the premier choice. Its ease of use combined with top-notch reliability and customer service ensures we can do our job with the confidence a cost estimator demands.

Comments: We use the online version of this software (OASIS). It is very robust and it has a lot of filters and functionalities. It produces very nice summaries and graphic outputs (takeoffs with legend and quantities). Once the plans are uploaded, the quality drops down dramatically (I guess for efficiency purposes) and the output graphs and plots are low quality also, but they make a great reference tool. The main problem I see is that it does not has user-friendly controls/commands, it is almost counter-intuitive the way it works if compared to other engineering Softwares. Once you burn that stage and get used to the commands, it gets back to the very powerful tool it is.

Comments: On-Screen Takeoff Viewer is a free version of the takeoff software. I started using it for drafting Project Submittal Drawings. The Project Managers would use to full version to markup a project and I would use the viewer to determine Scope of Work for the drawings.

Pros: Easy to navigate between pages and views. View all documents of the project in one place. (Except .dwg's)

Cons: Some markups made in Viewer stay - (i.e. highlight) others deleted when going to a different page. (Can't remember exactly - don't use it) Measure only shows to even inch.

Comments: I began using On-Screen On-Center Take-off is Feb. 2016. Overall the program is great. Its fairly simple to import and manage drawings, create conditions, and quantify areas. I am sure there are many features which I fail to use to their potential, but learning to make the system work of me and the types of take-offs I perform was quick. There is very little learning curve, and if you have any questions their Customer Support Tools are incredible. I enter a question and typically receive a call from a person within hours. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. The program has its weaknesses. One huge weakness is it's tolerance. When using the measure tool the tolerance is to the nearest inch. There is no way to adjust this, which can mean rejection of material and a lot of jobsite labor in our particular field (Stone). Also, exporting to excel could be clearer, but overall it's pretty helpful.

Pros: Ability to create various types of conditions, in various types of materials, in various areas, and being able to calculate various types of information from one condition (sq. of one side & top & total lf, Average tile count & overall sf, etc.). Ability to import various file types, PDF, AutoCAD, etc. Ability to export to Excel. Ability to label conditions & include conditions legends, creating a helpful Take-off maps for bids.

Cons: Inability to tighten tolerances. Inability to label linear conditions. Inability to increase the size of the font on condition labels. Excel Export could be much cleaner. Inabiliy to create non-grid tile layouts.

Recommendations to other buyers: This product is wonderful, but try it first to make sure it's capable of performing for your specific needs. I could see certain features being very helpful, while others being very limiting.

Comments: I've used OST for 3 years, and it has always been able to meet my needs for takeoff. Without fail it creates a clear and easy to use takeoff file that i can import, edit, and organize. On top of that it enables clear communication of quantities and values between the estimating department and the field.

Pros: Easy to Use, clear organization, user friendly, easy to export takeoffs

Cons: expensive

Recommendations to other buyers: Worth the money if used frequently

Comments: I work in an estimating department and we use your product all the time to get either quick take offs and references or full in-depth take offs by trade.

Pros: I like the ease of use and well thought out interface. The tools do exactly what you need them to do and speed up the take off process

Cons: Price

Recommendations to other buyers: A worthy software package when in need of heavy, daily takoffs. Too pricy if just looking for small quick takeoffs.

Comments: In my opinion, On-Screen Takeoff is the easiest to use digital take-off program out there. Even beginners can be up and running in only a matter of minutes for the simplest most common types of take-off. More difficult tasks (curved lines, items with odd shapes, etc.) can be picked up quickly as well. We use OST for presentations and as part of our proposals.

Pros: Ease of use. Quick.

Cons: Price. Convincing higher-ups that the investment is worth the time-savings and that the time-savings equal cost savings.

Comments: I have been using OST for close to 10 years now and have found it to be a most useful software even beyond its amazing takeoff capabilities. Takeoffs are quick and easy and once coupled with the database of your creation or QuickBid, can provide exacting results that can be utilized in any size company or project.

Pros: Intuitive, easy to learn, numerous shortcuts for the experienced user, easy to create libraries of reusable building assemblies, Customer Service has always been spectacular when needed.

Cons: Updates can be precarious (but there is Customer Service), doesn't link to a database like RSMeans (last I checked).

Recommendations to other buyers: Works for any business size, large or small...

Comments: I have used both Quick bid and Ost for about 4 years now and the company i work for has used it a bit longer. The person who trained me was a very early user of the product. Compared to a scale and a spread sheet this product is awesome. However as we started growing as a company and getting more users product became glitchy. at that time we where told to move to a sql database (They do not support SQL but do recommend it as a solution to issues.) Since this time the support that we pay quite well for yearly is about useless as they go thru the motions like they want to help then say we do not support sql so we can not help you. At one point i had issues approving a change order that i made called support they mentioned yes that is an issue here is a workaround because that feature only works about half the time.(Really!) Basically it seems that whenever we have an issue their "Excellent" support team has issues telling us anything other than it is somehow our fault, yet every time they recommend us to do something a specific way we oblige. In short this product could be amazing however they need to get with the times and start supporting what they recommend.

Pros: Takeoff program works very well, lots of different options to show differences in conditions. Quick bid works well sometimes. and you can customize the naming conventions, link items, and do multi condition takeoff. As i mentioned if it wasn't for the poor support and the horrible recommendation to switch to sql that they do not support i would probably be writing a completely different review.

Cons: Customer service they will answer phone and call you back. I think it's so they can tell you that they cant help or support you.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you do have issues call support at night as late as possible they may spend some extra time due to boredom at off peak time.

Pros: I have tried other Takeoff software, but this is the best for me. I like this product because it is user friendly and has several built in tools that others may not have. In addition, other software can be limited in functions or available tools. I also like that the customer service representatives are friendly and helpful.

Cons: The export function to excel gets stuck at times other than that its good. I would like an option to measure segments on a page to accurately scale a page. As it is, a scale has to be either selected or created which could be a hassle when the page does not have a scale in which case you just have to guess until you get the right measurement you're looking for.

Recommendations to other buyers: I found that online tutorials are actually helpful if you have any questions about the software.

Pros: It is a very intuitive program, the way it operates makes taking off construction material for my job simple.

Cons: Some aspects are not so intuitive. Some of the actions and tools on the program don't operate how most other programs do. I'm referring to tools like text box and dimension where there is no easy way to change text color/style for all text, only indivisually.

Recommendations to other buyers: Really the software is great. The only problems we have had was with our database and server. My advice then would be to get a good IT guy.

Pros: Ease to use. Allow for quick quantity, linear footage, or square footage takeoffs.

Cons: No additional rules that can be applied for total estimate (labor and material rates). Also, cannot pull up takeoffs performed by another user.

Pros: Ease of use. Other programs were so simple however that there were not a ton of options and features. This product can work simply but also has tons of short cuts and additional options if you are also looking for bells and whistles to learn along the way. The good thing is you can be up and running in no time with the basics of it and learn more as you go. Videos and training and support response time are all great.

Cons: The two day course was great but it would be nice to have one on one help with the training to skip the things I already knew and get into spending more time on the things I needed to. The training was not specifically for concrete which would have been more helpful than learning things that don't pertain to my field.

Recommendations to other buyers: We have had nothing but ease of use with this product. There is a bit of a learning curve on some things but once learned it really has helped a ton.

Pros: I like the ease of use and how it works with multiple users. It is the Cadillac of on screen takeoff software.

Cons: I used it as an employee of a large construction company. Now that I am on my own I struggle with how much they charge versus other software that can do just as much.

Recommendations to other buyers: It did have its limitations but the program is smooth and intuitive. I would recommend this to someone that is used to it already and does not worry about the cost.

Pros: The product provides a legend for multiple quantity take-offs which allows the user to estimate the job fully. This is also great during construction to provide adequate materials onsite.

Cons: There is nothing that I do not like about this product as the features provide you exactly what you need during the estimating phase. Color coding can mimic other materials but it's understandable that you can only provide so many configurations.

Pros: The product does well for estimating and has some glitches that you can work around if you have been running it long enough. On Center Software, However is basically working an angle that will chew you up and spit you out! Just like the other reviewer mentioned. You have to keep pouring $$$ into support. We own 3 subscriptions (2 OST and 1 QB) of this product, each subscription cost thousands. Each year you have to pay over $$$$$ for each sub subscription you own just for maintenance. But here is the best part, If you miss a year or 2 of maintenance you have to go back and back pay the years you didn't pay! (I wonder if they hired an old IRS agent as the controller?) Wow! Isn't that a great way to gain customer loyalty! Now just like the manager of the tech support told me, "If you go for a while without taking support, you will eventually have to buy new subscriptions/software, it all ends up to be the same amount of money".. Oh did I forget? If you don't buy your maintenance at the beginning of the calendar year, say 3rd quarter, better get your wallet out again for January! You think they could maybe sell you blocks of time for tech support, get creative, anything? Anything other than coming after a tradesman's pocketbook so hurtfully. I'm disgusted! Consumers, If your looking for estimating software look somewhere else. Its 2015! Everyone makes it! I'm no longer an OCS ADVOCATE!

Cons: Nothing to like about dealing with OCS. Remember it takes a long time to get a customer but imagine what it takes to get them back.

Pros: Software functions fine, gets the job done faster and more organized then paper.

Cons: Apparently there is a Sunset clause where they can cancel your software. Considering the time value of money better to get a program that costs less up front with a monthly fee then to be forced to spend thousands to purchase new software every couple of years.

Recommendations to other buyers: I was recently informed that it will be disabled. Because it comes with a dongle that has to connect to their servers to authenticate and unlock the program, they will no longer allow the dongles to connect. How much could it cost to have a line of code that says "yes" or just unlock the dongle permanently. You would think that the cost would be a program that lasts for good. So basically they expect me to purchase the software all over again and that is not going to happen. There is better software out there for less money and no ridiculous "Sunset".

Pros: Within the program, I like the ability to use it the way I see the project. It is flexible to the old guard and the new age user. Once you have the understanding of how each quantity is captured, you can set up your styles and types to make sense of the number and what it is relative to.

Cons: How much it costs and the annual fee. It is a very good product, just expensive. If you set up Quick Bid to estimate when you are doing your take off, it becomes a slow process. When you enter all the components into the line items, any time you change them, the program completely recalculates the estimate. I had a $25 million estimate and had a few changes to add and delete. It took a long time to recalculate when I added and subtracted information.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you are cranking out estimates daily, this product is efficient. It combines takeoff with estimate totals immediately. Use the OST program to get the quantitative survey done and then open up Quick Bid to fill in the takeoff items so the the one time calculation does not hurt your time of takeoff.

Comments: I have been using On-Screen Takeoff and Quick Bid since 2005. Since then, I have learned to modify the software for many different applications. Before On Center, I used to do takeoffs by hand. I quote many jobs a year, and too many things can go wrong. Sometimes, the GC's change materials or quantities at the last minute. That is no problem. As long as you have all of your materials taken off to completeness, you really only have to worry about the other half, the labor. I also have modified and added conditions to include steel and iron connections - either welded or bolted. Attending out of town training helped tremendously. They are always there for help when needed. When you are quoting jobs - whether $3K or $1million - this is the tool to use. All guesswork is gone. This software counts the smallest details like screws, rolls of tape, or corner beads. These are far too laborious to do by hand. Even when roofs are concerned it, calculates your pitch on 2-dimensional drawings to give a more accurate square-footage count.

Comments: I use On-Screen Takeoff (OST) from OnCenter at a full sevice site work contractor located in Tucson AZ. OST provides an easy way to export into an excel spreadsheet, which we use to create proposals for both public and private projects. I find it easier and faster to use OST for take-off purposes and to review changes with the overlay option. For those estimators with some basic skills OST can be learned in hours. I watched the tutorials and was up and running with a minimal learning curve. On occasion I have needed customer support to work through issues, which typically aren't a problem with OST.

Comments: I won contracts with OnCenter QuickBid/OnScreen Takeoff programs for years, and used 6 versions. They have top-notch service and support. We bid 35 million dollars worth of contracts per year with a single estimator, and won more than the industry average in dollars and units. Drywall/Acoustical/MetalFraming assemblies were a snap to produce and to update. The ability to reuse repetitive assemblies was great, even customizing changes on the go for each area. Multi-floor Interiors are a must for this program, and the final Bids and electronic trails are great when your looking to make good impressions! Updating materials, organized by type is a snap, and the system is very reliable.
