Pros: Okay, let's be honest: Most EMR software is lousy. It's got dozens of features bolted together ad-hoc, without any real thought behind UI or UX. The result is a confusing mess. And most vendors don't mind it being so confusing, as long as the functionality is there, because then they can charge for enterprise training and service contracts.

Epic is no different. It's got lots of functionality, for sure. If you can find it. But once you do, it really does enable you to keep tabs on everything pretty well. The best features include the CareAnywhere views and shortcuts into PACS systems.

Cons: The worst features? The horrible color themes and lack of customization therein. The inconsistency in customizability -- there's a "wrench icon" practically everywhere, which allows you to tweak certain settings. Yet some things are impossible -- like rearranging columns in the Chart Review section. Also, the Inbox functions are really terrible.

Pros: I love patient portal and e-prescribing features which helps us meet the Meaningful Use Stage 2 requirements. The tool also supports telemedicine options that allow our doctors to communicate with patients via a video platform and offers mobile and tablet functionality. EpicCare MyChart allows patients to view medical information, message doctors, schedule appointments and manage medical history via a personalized portal.

Cons: The health maintenance options could be better, and easier to see and mark as complete. Also out would be easier if when you marked something got a preference it wouldn't add a copy to the main menu. Upgrade to EPIC 2017 is a fight.

Overall: With EpicCare, clinics can streamline their workflows using personalized screens, dashboards and specialty applications. The application's finance module allows clinics to track payments, bills and invoices. EpicCare is a mobile-ready solution, allowing both doctors and patients to access information on their Apple devices.

EPIC is one of the most popular EMR systems in Cincinnati.

Pros: EPIC is the system that the majority of hospitals and healthcare facilities use in our city. This is EXTREMELY beneficial because when we have patients that go to more than one site, the other site can access the patient's medical history and receive very important information. The electronic system allows for providers to communicate with each other without actually being on the phone or in person, and it allows for the providers to access records from multiple sites. This is very important for our organization because our providers serve patients at multiple locations.

Cons: This system has made communication easier for administration, providers, and other healthcare professionals so I have no complaints about EPIC.

Pros: I have seen both the business and user side of Epic. As a CNA, and nursing student, I have been using Epic for sometime. I love it. As someone who has also used other EMR services, I can say with confidence that Epic Systems is by far the easiest and most customizable. It does take time to navigate, but all EMR services do. Epic has great support, its easy to use, and has great customizable ability.

Cons: EpicCare EMR is pricey. A lot of hospitals don't use Epic for that exact reason. However, it is well worth the price.

Overall: Overall, Epic is the best EMR I've use to date and would love to see it used in more hospital settings.

Comments: I would love to use this program again! I wish my current setting used it.

Pros: I used this product for two years at a hospital setting. This product was great because it held provider accountable for finishing their notes prior to billing. It also allowed the option to create templates which can speed up the process of charting. This product is used across several hospital settings, so it was easy to share information with other providers. Seemed to be conducive to different types of providers as well.

Cons: Not a lot of complaints of this software. It does look a bit dated. I was not responsible for payment or accessing customer support, so I can't speak to those components.

Pros: I like the ease of the flow sheets. I feel like it¿s easy to review results. The MAR is very easy to read and is color coded to make it even easier to use.

Cons: I feel like it¿s somewhat difficult to review orders. There is Manage Orders as well as Order History, which is sometimes difficult to see the full order and how it was entered. I would also like to see a TAR (treatment administration record). A TAR would allow better visibility for treatments such as wound care or skin care.

Good for impatient applications but more difficult to apply to outpatient.

Pros: Easy to set up templates. Documentation can take a while without setting up templates. For MD and nursing staff the program has useful information for point and click type documentation. Communication between providers, staff, and patients can be set up easily.

Cons: Is not a good program for rehabilitation facilities. Templates make it easier but for ease of scheduling, analytics for business operations, and documentation it is not a good fit for outpatient settings.

Comments: Over all this is an excellent software for clinic or hospital based healthcare organizations.

Pros: Epic is easy to use once learned. Epic is adaptable to multi specialties. Also, epic is simple for the patient to use the health portal and easy to transfer patient information across healthcare systems.

Cons: The learning curve is extensive. Also, the multiple screens to obtain patient information or perform a task such as order sets is time consuming.

Comments: I am a physician and consciously avoid health care facilities that use EPIC for my own care because I think it is so bad. Access from home on call but any software does this. It is actually very cumbersome to log in from home

Cons: Insufficient space to list all the problems Great for people with OCD who just like to click boxes. Clunky, cumbersome, slow, cluttered and poorly designed screens After 7 years it just keeps getting worse. I have used much better EHRs in other settings.

Comments: Terrible customer service Terrible technical support

Cons: Their support is unhelpful. I work with EPIC exclusively at SSM facilities and could not be more disappointed. I do not understand why they cannot trouble shoot updates before they go live. If I was this effective in my job I would not have it anymore.

Pros: Easy to set smart phrases and less clicking than some other EMR I have used.
Good flow and customizable. Speed is pretty good, and usually don't have to wait on pages to load.

Cons: Entry for medical history could be better and easier to change and update. Personal notepad function should be larger and customizable in size! This would allow much more functionality.

Overall: Easier to use compared to other EMR systems.

Comments: Overall, I think the system is good but there are much easier to follow and operate systems out there.

Pros: I like the number of features that allow preparation for chart documentation, such as huddle note and provider scratchpad. Then being able to transfer this data later with a smart phrase is quite helpful.

Cons: Not as customizable as I would like it to be. Would be like to create custom templates to use for my profession without needing "approval" from some team that does not use EPIC in the same capacity as I do.

Overall: Benefits are being able to e-prescribe medications, review charts from nearby practices also using EPIC.

Comments: The good thing about EPIC within home care is that it's a relatively new system and the epic team is open to suggestions and have actually implemented changes that we have suggested. They are good to work with.

Pros: if you work in a large system, this product is great.I love that I can follow a patient's care from acute care to rehab, to home care. Cuts down on extra phone calls when I can find the things I need within the chart online.

Cons: Charting by exception is difficult for me as I don't want to miss anything when I'm charting. There are important things that one may not be prompted to complete

Pros: Great interdisciplinary system - gives phone numbers for other providers, lets you know if someone else is using the patient's chart when you want to use it and gives you info so you can contact the person - nice to have the whole patient record in one place

Cons: there is a lot of redundancy, at least in the department that i'm in - we have to enter dx codes every time we see the patient even if we see them weekly for the same service.

Pros: Anytime a call or letter is place to a patient from an office that uses Epic, its documented. Its easy to find out how an office and when theyre contacting a patient for follow up or to schedule an appointment. D/C notes are easy to follow and read

Cons: I dont like how the labs arent grouped together in what they are called i.e. cmp, lipid, cbc

I utilize this software while working in the emergency room. It is fast and easy to use.

Pros: Epic is the industry leader- if you are working in a large healthcare system, you likely don't have a lot of choice in your EMR. Smartsets, smart notes and other efficiencies are built into the system

Cons: Not intuitive. Rigid functionality. Limited ability to think outside of the box in inventive ways- especially for complex and multidiciplinary care environkments. Limited ability to export, print and manipulate data- leading to the use of 'work around' spreadsheets which go against the point of centralizing data.

Comments: There are healthcare systems and facilities that are more focused on a passive healthcare approach and I know one specifically I have worked with in Virginia that has actually created from scratch their own EMR system (using their on staff software engineers) that focuses more on the patient as opposed to the turnover.

Pros: This software is easier to use than many of the main stream EMR/EHR systems. Templates are useful and simple to set up.

Cons: I feel that most EMR or EHR systems are geared towards patient turnover and while a lot of FQHC facilities may focus on patient turnover for revanue indicators. Epic could stand to benefit from marketing software to facilities that don't focus on patient turnover.
