However in case of any escalations they are not cooperative. It clearly shows they grow too large and are disconcerted with individual users. Pros Affordability. I like voting system for new features (however new features are done very slowly, it typically take years before they are considered). There is some ease of use and lots of online trainings. Cons With lower price comes lower expectations. First of all the Canadian version is not put sufficient efforts. I really would advise all Canadians to consider other software suppliers who consider Canadian market more seriously. Many features can only be used in US, unfortunately. Finally the weakest part is patient tracking. It simply lacks feature to assure no patients is left behind. I noticed we are loosing patients because of lack of tools to track them. Any tracking is done with manual queries which can be very unfriendly to end user. Open dental makes it very easy to figure things out if you do not know how to do something by utilizing there help button on tool bar. May 29, 2025 5.0 I have used open dental in several different dental offices and no matter what the flow of the office is open dental can accommodate anything Pros I honestly cannot think of one negative thing to say about open dental. It is very user-friendly no matter what your job role is in the office. The reporting is also very easy to understand and easy to access and it is real time. I couldn’t think of any other practice management software that I would prefer over this one. Cons Again, I really couldn’t think of anything that I don’t like about open dental but if I really had to nitpick, I would say that I wish you could have multiple like if I were to open the chart I wish I could also leave the other window open instead of having to open two different open dental windows Review Source AK Arthur K. Thus, Open Dental is the only practice management software I've used. Luckily it is user-friendly, and I felt comfortable navigating the basics within days. Over time, I've picked up on some of the more complex feature; however, I still feel like we do not utilize all of the available features. Pros Open Dental offers great pricing options for our practice, and it is easy to learn the basics of the database system. Cons There are a limited number of standard reports options. For more specific reports tailored to our business needs, it is sometimes tough to find a "User Query" that is on point. They have exceptional customer support and all at a reasonable cost. Pros It is very user friendly, easy to learn, an extremely comprehensive supporting most dental practice needs Cons Certain parts of the accounting module are a real challenge. Speficall the ledger (balances are difficult to read with regard to when insurance claims are initiated vs reconciled). Also, I like that the app is simple to use. I learned how everything works within a day, and so far, I don't have big issues. In general, I am satisfied. Pros The app is straightforward to use. It also allows me to access data from patients with high accuracy. Cons Sometimes, I experienced malfunctions such as a "frozen screen," which required me to reopen the application or even reset my computer during work, while on a phone call, or when encountering a delay while trying to open a patient's file. Easy to set up and maintain. Pros It has one window and you can view everything for the patient simply by toggling between the options on the left. Easy to logo on and off without losing your space. Everything is customizable and there are so many options. Customer Service is amazing and they always call right back and they are very knowledgeable. If something can't be figured right then they send to a higher level tech and solutions are found in a great time frame. The cost is great for such good customer service. You can't beat the value of Open Dental! Cons Forms are not great. Sheets are hard to use and set up and if they could update this to a more modern approach that would be my only request. I couldn't practice without it. Pros I've used Dentrix and Eaglesoft before using Open Dental, and have to say that Open Dental is by far the best. Everything is straightforward, it's simple to learn, and very customizable. Managing patient records and tracking claims and payments is a breeze. Their customer support is incredibly helpful, and the backlog of webinars and videos are the perfect training tools for someone learning the software. On top of the great functionality, the cost is incredibly affordable and makes selecting Open Dental a no brainer. Cons The only downside that I've experienced is that some things take extra steps to reverse if you've made a mistake. Other than that, it's very easy to use. April 5, 2022 5.0 Our overall experience with Open Dental is that it is a far superior dental software and i have used, Easy dent, Dentrix, Eaglesoft and none of these can hold a candle to Open dental Pros This software make's my life so much easier as an administrator. The accounts are easy to read. Billing and insurance payments are a breeze, as well as emailing directly from the account if patient owes after putting in insurance payments. Cons I would like to see an option for printing or emailing the entre families appointments on paper or email.. (not at the end of statements) This would really help with with our patients keeping appointments. Pros Tooth chart is efficient and informative, I like how you can clearly see that you are watching the "distal of #3" just by looking at the tooth chart. It is easy to add frequently used buttons. Easy to make auto notes and use the auto notes. The auto notes allow you to stop at any time and just go type in the note and the can pick back up on auto prompts whenever you want. It is easy to see insurance coverage and how much a patient owes so you know if they even need to stop at the front desk to check out. The schedule is easy to use and has color blocks that are not only efficient but just appealing. Perio charting is simple and so easy to toggle back and forth to show patient a change between this perio charting we took today vs another day they came in. I love that there was a place under the tooth chart to place personal notes that can be seen. Also a way to easily place and see preferred hygienist or dentist that is easily seen on schedule. HHx is easy to see on same page as chart. Cons Nothing, I would be a cult leader for Open Dental. I have been a hygienist for 10 years and have never been so happy with a software, it did everything I wanted any more. I love efficiency and this ticked all of the boxes. Dentist/Owner Medical Practice Used the software for: 2+ years ### "My Server Crashed and Open Dental came to my rescue!!" January 13, 2019 5.0 So, my physical server just crashed this past Tuesday the 1st of January 2019. The 2 of the 3 hard-drives on the server were corrupted, last one barely had accessible data. The other backup, the "Cloud" back up would not sync, there was an issue with the password that could not be recovered. I was dead in the water. I got on the phone with rep from Open Dental. This guy is top rate IT man, he knows the software, the code, etc. An emergency data recovery team was able to get rep a semi corrupted, semi correct version of my data and he put it all back together for the office. Rep and his team worked hard and now i'm back up and running. I could not have asked for better customer support. By the way, the only way Rep was able to allocate his resources towards my project was an OK from the CEO, so rep was literally on the phone with the CEO and who okay his staffs' time. So the company has an empathetic leader, who allowed the allocation of much of his resources to rebuild my database. I would have lost all my patient's data, the appointments, the amount the they paid me, the existing treatment plans, the previous work done, it would have just been a disaster for my business, literally starting over with nothing. public service announcement: just because you run back ups doesn't mean you shouldn't physically test them to make sure you have access to the data. Back to Open Dental, the CEO and IT team lead by rep and saved my business, I'm extremely grateful. Again, Open Dental is a top notch company with top notch staff!!!! Pros Amazingly easy to use and constantly being updated with latest versions, you don't need to wait for a new full release, like some other dental software programs. Open dental techs just update your software with new features when they develop them. The software is free and the monthly IT fee is 110% worth it. Cons Its really difficult to find any cons with a software that is personalized. Thank you! Pros The fact that it is easy to navigate, but if you were to have issues, the support is great. Granted that is a monthly fee for unlimited access, but it is totally worth it. There are times I can go months without calling for help, but hit one snag and I'm on the phone with them several times a day or days in a row. Cons It's not a con, but just me and my lack of knowledge. Some of the videos don't seem to have audio and I've mentioned that to them. I try to watch the help video first...sometimes. It works well with other programs, too. Pros It's open source, which I love, therefore, I'm able to change, adjust and add forms, lab slips, charting and much more. Reports are easy and the selection is great. The interface is user friendly and quick to learn. The fees are minimal, if desired to have support, to free. The are certain programs that can be purchased or added for a fee, mobile view, e-claims etc. Cons I don't like that only one section can be opened at a time. The software is easy to use and reliable. The accounting section is full of every report you could ever need and, if by chance there’s a report that you want that isn’t on the list, Open Dental will create it for you. I feel as if Open Dental has been a huge part of the success of our practice. Pros Open Dental is so easy to use. I like how clearly the process of entering a patient’s information, insurance, etc. is. Each part of a patient’s chart is clearly separated into easy-to-identify sections for each part of a dental office…hygiene, restorative, billing, etc. I especially like how clearly Open Dental processes insurance and insurance payments. The software designers are forward-thinking, and because they are open to customers’ ideas and suggestions, they are always bringing in new and exciting features. Reports can be modified to your specifications and the software is very easy to use and learn. Pros Open dental is one of the most comprehensive practice management softwares for dental available. Everything for each patient is one one screen (unlike many others that have the medical history separate). Cons A lot of set up can be involved in order to make autonotes.
