The software has helped our practice stay organized and operate more efficiently by streamlining patient management, scheduling, billing, and treatment planning. It offers a wide range of features at a reasonable cost, and the regular updates continue to improve the user experience. While there is a learning curve for new users, the system is reliable, customizable, and well-supported. I would recommend Open Dental to other dental practices looking for a comprehensive practice management solution. Pros Open Dental has been an excellent investment for our practice. It is user-friendly, reliable, and offers all the tools needed to manage patients, appointments, treatment plans, billing, and reporting in one place. The software provides great value for the cost, and the support team is responsive and knowledgeable. I also appreciate the frequent updates, which continuously improve the system and add useful features. Overall, Open Dental has helped our office operate more efficiently and provide a better experience for our patients. Cons One aspect I like least about Open Dental is that there can be a learning curve for new users because of the large number of features and customization options available. However in case of any escalations they are not cooperative. It clearly shows they grow too large and are disconcerted with individual users. Pros Affordability. I like voting system for new features (however new features are done very slowly, it typically take years before they are considered). There is some ease of use and lots of online trainings. Cons With lower price comes lower expectations. First of all the Canadian version is not put sufficient efforts. I really would advise all Canadians to consider other software suppliers who consider Canadian market more seriously. Many features can only be used in US, unfortunately. Finally the weakest part is patient tracking. It simply lacks feature to assure no patients is left behind. I noticed we are loosing patients because of lack of tools to track them. Any tracking is done with manual queries which can be very unfriendly to end user. Open dental makes it very easy to figure things out if you do not know how to do something by utilizing there help button on tool bar. I really like the simplicity of the software. It's great for general dentistry as well as orthodontics. Cons integration with other software, I don't know how to seamlessly integrate the software with other specialty programs such as Invisalign, but it might be because I don't know how to do it. It is very user-friendly no matter what your job role is in the office. The reporting is also very easy to understand and easy to access and it is real time. I couldn’t think of any other practice management software that I would prefer over this one. Thus, Open Dental is the only practice management software I've used. Luckily it is user-friendly, and I felt comfortable navigating the basics within days. Over time, I've picked up on some of the more complex feature; however, I still feel like we do not utilize all of the available features. Pros Open Dental offers great pricing options for our practice, and it is easy to learn the basics of the database system. Cons There are a limited number of standard reports options. For more specific reports tailored to our business needs, it is sometimes tough to find a "User Query" that is on point. Speficall the ledger (balances are difficult to read with regard to when insurance claims are initiated vs reconciled). Cons Sometimes, I experienced malfunctions such as a "frozen screen," which required me to reopen the application or even reset my computer during work, while on a phone call, or when encountering a delay while trying to open a patient's file. I couldn't practice without it. Pros I've used Dentrix and Eaglesoft before using Open Dental, and have to say that Open Dental is by far the best. Everything is straightforward, it's simple to learn, and very customizable. Managing patient records and tracking claims and payments is a breeze. Their customer support is incredibly helpful, and the backlog of webinars and videos are the perfect training tools for someone learning the software. On top of the great functionality, the cost is incredibly affordable and makes selecting Open Dental a no brainer. Cons The only downside that I've experienced is that some things take extra steps to reverse if you've made a mistake. Other than that, it's very easy to use. February 8, 2017 5.0 We have been using Open Dental since 2009 and love the program. It is incredibly robust and does everything we need and more. Open Dental enabled us to become a paperless, chartless practice. Customer support is second to none. They are extremely attentive to their customers needs. Updates are continually being released, not just once every year or more. True story. I once called the customer support line. I reached their voice mail and since it was almost closing time I didn't bother to leave a message, I figured I would call back the next day. Well I'm sitting at my desk and the phone rings and I see it is area code 503. So I pick up and the person says, "This is Open Dental. How can we help you? I was blown away. I asked him how he know I called and he said he saw my number on their caller ID. Well, how many companies call you back even when you DIDN'T leave a message? That is how dedicated they are to customer satisfaction. Another time, I had a serious problem after a windows upgrade and couldn't get OD to work. They spent hours remotely working on my machine and escalated it to their top techies. And it was really a problem with Windows not Open Dental that caused the problem. No where else would you get that kind of service. I was so grateful for all their efforts I found a pizza place near them on the internet and ordered several pizzas and had them delivered. I don't know anybody who uses Open Dental who doesn't love the company and the software. Pros Extremely customizable. You can create queries and get just about any information you want out of the database. You can be truly paperless and chart-less. It doesn't take long to learn the ins and outs. The software is constantly being improved. They take suggestions and advice from their users and try to implement what the users ask for. They even have a system where you can vote on feature that you and other users post, and the ones with the most votes get the top priority. It is not expensive. Cons The are growing so fast I worry that they will lose some of the feeling of being a small, intimate company. So far that hasn't been a problem. Review Source CT Chelsea T. Pros Tooth chart is efficient and informative, I like how you can clearly see that you are watching the "distal of #3" just by looking at the tooth chart. It is easy to add frequently used buttons. Easy to make auto notes and use the auto notes. The auto notes allow you to stop at any time and just go type in the note and the can pick back up on auto prompts whenever you want. It is easy to see insurance coverage and how much a patient owes so you know if they even need to stop at the front desk to check out. The schedule is easy to use and has color blocks that are not only efficient but just appealing. Perio charting is simple and so easy to toggle back and forth to show patient a change between this perio charting we took today vs another day they came in. I love that there was a place under the tooth chart to place personal notes that can be seen. Also a way to easily place and see preferred hygienist or dentist that is easily seen on schedule. HHx is easy to see on same page as chart. Cons Nothing, I would be a cult leader for Open Dental. I have been a hygienist for 10 years and have never been so happy with a software, it did everything I wanted any more. I love efficiency and this ticked all of the boxes. Pros Open Dental promotes itself as completely customizable and that's absolutely correct. If there's a feature they don't have, you can pay to have it created, or if enough people vote to have it created, their developers will add the feature! You can run a Query (custom report) for just about any possible scenario, and save it as a favorite for future use. It's incredibly user friendly, between the customer support team, online manual, and YouTube video tutorials, you'll feel like a pro in no time at all! You can set up additional training and their team is always friendly and approachable. Very happy to have found this software at a decent price! Cons Features can sometimes take a while, especially if you're just trying to vote on them. Occasionally things are labeled or located in areas you wouldn't expect, or called something unusual. For instance, if you want to add a user, you have to go into "security", which took me FOREVER to find! Pros The fact that it is easy to navigate, but if you were to have issues, the support is great. Granted that is a monthly fee for unlimited access, but it is totally worth it. There are times I can go months without calling for help, but hit one snag and I'm on the phone with them several times a day or days in a row. Cons It's not a con, but just me and my lack of knowledge. Some of the videos don't seem to have audio and I've mentioned that to them. I try to watch the help video first...sometimes. It works well with other programs, too. Pros It's open source, which I love, therefore, I'm able to change, adjust and add forms, lab slips, charting and much more. The are certain programs that can be purchased or added for a fee, mobile view, e-claims etc. Cons I don't like that only one section can be opened at a time. December 5, 2019 5.0 Open Dental is one of the least expensive practice management softwares while also being the most thorough. Reports can be modified to your specifications and the software is very easy to use and learn. Pros Open dental is one of the most comprehensive practice management softwares for dental available. Everything for each patient is one one screen (unlike many others that have the medical history separate). Cons A lot of set up can be involved in order to make autonotes. Pros The vast amount of features allow for keeping as much of what we do in one program as possible. Scheduling is a breeze, keeping logs of communication between staff and patients is simple and easy to find, and its nice to be able to view imaging inside the same program that we enter chart notes. Cons The only issue I have with this software is the billing aspect. The way statements are structured with both payment plans and regular account info makes no sense to patients, and confusion over that accounts for a large portion of our calls.
