It's great that this is a cost effective software but would not be suitable for a beginner in accounting. Pros The initial reason for using GnuCash was that it is a free accounting software. This was great for a small business. Cons GnuCash provided minimum access if working remote or on various devices since it's only a desktop application. This proved to be something necessary for my company. This was the best option since we were starting out our business and did not have the means to invest a costly program that would provide similar information. Pros I love that GnuCash is a fully featured financial tracking software that was free! Cons The negatives with GnuCash is that it didn't offer everything that the paid products offered such as automatic import of transactions, automated invoice sending and payment receiving, payroll, etc. But when you consider the product is free, it really can't be beaten. It can also efficiently import QIF and OFX files which makes transaction organizing a cinch. It is an effective solution in financial analysis. Cons Sometimes I have had slowdowns mainly in running portfolio valuation reports, though this is rare. This can hamper my work a little especially when typing activities involve multiple accounts or several transactions. It kind of took a little time to get used to it since its more detailed than other apps but it really helped me track my income, expenses and savings. The double-entry system helped me stay accurate aswell. Pros It's free and opensource! The code is available for customization for anyone interested in tweaking around, makes it perfect for people on low-budget and small businesses. It also supports multiple currencies. Cons It's not really beginner friendly. I feel like you'd need to be an accountant to understand the software itself and the outdated UI also doesn't help. Probably one of the best money management applications out there. Pros I like the open source quality and offline access of the GnuCash. Allows me to use advanced level accounting concepts to manage my personal finances. Cons The user interface is a little outdated and has not been updated in a long time. Only one person can enter transactions at any one time. So if you have 10 sales people all taking orders, they could not all be entering transactions at the same time. However, after doing bookkeeping for almost 10 years, I am confident that I could make gnucash work in my operation just as well as any paid for program. Pros Clearly the price and value are the initial reasons to take a look at gnuCash. However, once you get used to it, and if you are familiar with bookkeeping, it can prove to be just as good as any accounting software for small medium businesses that exist. Cons Initially, and this may be because I was new to the world of bookkeeping, it was hard to get some answers on how do use the software. As a young company we did not have the resources to purchase a high-end accounting software package, and I generally prefer to try open source options when available.
