Before coming to Matlab I used to work with Grapher, another great tools for creating graphs. But, MATLAB is best for creating bulk images at a superb quality. You can create figures in almost all formats as you can imagine. If you are good with coding, there are limitless possibilities with creating ingenious plots . Another tool that I love is the Curve Fitting Tool within matlab. Ot can help you with fitting meaningful curves in you data pretty easily. Cons There are some inconsistency from version to version. Sometimes one code of a MATLAB version may throw error in another version. But it is pretty rare. I would love to see better parallel processing instructions on MATLAB. Because Matlab already contains a high performance computing engine, We did not have to focus heavily and optimizing our code and got results faster. Most of our engineers already were familiar with the tool. Pros Matlab has no equal: textbook quality documentation with examples and interactive training, an extremely high performance execution engine, a unique language optimized for numerical computing, interoperability with many languages and external hardware systems, and a thriving community of professional scientists and engineers surrounding it. Cons Matlab has grown a lot and can be slow to launch on some machines. While the software quality is unmatched, it is expensive, but the cost is justified if numerical computing is important to your organization. Free software can play a similar role to Matlab, but in my experience none of them are nearly as efficient to use and you end up paying more money in the long run because your engineers will need to write their own utilities that are typically included and are better quality if you simply purchased Matlab from the start. Reason for choosing MATLAB Matlab is far more professional and excels at ease of use. We decided that the productivity gains far out matched the licensing costs. It accurately addresses the problems that we face in actual applications and provides an opportunity for modelling and testing. Pros MATLAB is an easy to use, reliable and accurate mathematical modelling application which address iterative analysis and design problems using a programming language that expresses matrix and array mathematics. MATLAB provides the opportunity to model anything in any field like electronics, power systems, circuit design, signal processing and neural networks. MATLAB is known for its high performance and being accurate. I have never experienced crashes in MATLAB or inaccurate calculations. MATLAB has a great user interface and provides simulation and modelling results very clearly and user friendly. MATLAB is a well documented and tested mathematical modelling software with almost zero bugs. Cons MATLAB is not suitable for heavy duty programming because it's programming language is based on mathematical modelling. MATLAB syntax and usage can be confusing to first time users. Therefore it is recommended to learn how to work with MATLAB before using. MATLAB uses the propriety programming language developed by MathWorks which might not be familiar if you are experienced with another programming language. If you are into subjects such as mathematics or physical simulation, use MATLAB. The final results will be much more precise, fast and easy to get. MATLAB is much more practical because when code errors occur, it is much easier to spot them due to a set of user-friendlies messages printed on the terminal. Instead of saying: "Something is wrong in line 29", the MATLAB engine says: "Something is wrong in line 29 because ..." Also, attached to this message is a link to an internal library that gives you a small explanation about the subjet. Cons MATLAB has a very unique coding language, therefore spend some time studying it. For instance, the first index of an array or list is one, not zero, as in most common coding languages. The documentations are excellent, thorough and straightforward. In terms of syntax, MATLAB is easy to learn even if you have no programming knowledge. On the other hand, MATLAB can be used in conjunction with Java to make the tool even more dynamic and powerful (look up Matlab Undocumented blog). Overall, I really like matlab for its ease of use and powerful computational capability. Cons Many essential features can only be accessed after you've purchased the right toolboxes, and each toolboxes can be very expensive when purchased under commercial licence. I'd highly recommend File Exchange to see if a user-made toolbox can fill your needs. Error messages can sometimes be unclear and there is no night mode. The options are endless and you can learn a lot in a relatively short time. Pros What I like most about matlab is that you can enter it without any pre-knowledge on programming and you will be able to learn programming techniques without having to know about ALL aspects of programming. So the learning curve is very comfartable, however for the tamed experts you can set the learning curve as steep as you like which will enable you to develop top-level programs, that can do extraordinarily good jobs. Cons At some point matlab may become much slower compared to other languages, which is because of the reason it is built and also the easy use of matlab, is in one way causing this. It's a powerful tool all in all. Pros It allows for many tasks to be prepared, be it a simple estimation to a complex simulation, you can prepare it and present it using MATLAB. You need to have programming skills, and to understand the mathematical model behind what you need to implement, but if those are clear, you will probably be able to get it up and running with MATLAB. Cons Since the licensing works as a server - client model, a good control of users is mandatory, in order to avoid bottlenecks. Also the technical background to properly use this suite means a steep learning curve for new users. Inside an organization, it would probably be better to have a standalone installation dedicated for the engineering department. This software is a very good option for the programming beginners as it facilitates the code compilation and different function calls. Online version helps me to run my code on a computer which doesn't have the desktop version of it. It is a very powerful software that can be used in many different ways for different professions. I really like how many useful built in features (functions) there are, and it's great that there are many different options to choose from if you wish to add more features (tool boxes). I like how versatile the program with when if comes to the different formats that you can import and export, for example anything from a spreadsheet full of data to a 3D CAT scan image. I feel like the possibilities are endless with what you can do with Matlab. I also used Matlab frequently as an engineering student. It made doing complex calculations and plotting such as differential equations so much easier and saved me a great deal of time too. Cons I have been using Matlab for several years now so I am very familiar with it, but it can take some time and learning to get used to at first and can feel a little intimidating. Pros I worked with matlab for long 5 years, all my graduation i used this software and i improved my knowledge in it, so i loved so much. Help-me at eletromagnetism, eletrical circuits, signal and systems, physical and probably half of my graduation. the programming language is a little tricky, but it comes from C and with the new enhancements it is possible to also have an object-oriented programming. Cons maybe the only problem is a lot of detail that sets it apart from other programming types, but it becomes very useful so it's not a problem, written by someone who actually had to work with most of their functionality. Cons It's a bit pricey if you don't have a subscription from your academic institution email. Also, it's not open source so you cannot customize it according to your specific needs, which makes it challenging for people in fields like machine learning.
