I use it every day not only for tender estimating but also for cash flows and much more. It is a great product, with great support. Pros Candy is by far the most user friendly program I have worked with and updates are done very often. I will never use another program for estimating tenders. You can structure it according to your needs and use your own experience to define your pricing. Cons I can not say anything negative about Candy, I almost want to call it perfect. Pros Initially we have to spare some time to candy then for future projects it is very easy to estimate similar projects and time saving. we can keep various versions of our estimate in the candy itself. it is very handy while traveling also as the size of the candy backup is very tiny. very easy to trace rates of similar line items. there are so many feature which are very user friendly. Cons I think there should be more columns to add in the INDRIECT Bill for amount calculation as some mechanical activities demands more columns while estimation. The support I get from Izak is commended. The integration of data between the different modules of estimating, planning, valuations, subcontract payments and cost reporting is the reason why I use the software. Pros The ability to record the complete detailed cycle from resource based estimating, to planning, to linking the bill of quantities to the program, to determining cash flows based on the construction program, to calculating of resource quantities in total, to calculating the allocation of resources over time, to preparing monthly valuations, to preparing subcontract payments and to preparing cost reporting against allowable budgetted amounts. Cons 1\. There is no security of data. For example, users / friends from different company's interchange company data amongst themselves. When employees leave company's, they take the previous company's CCS data with them. Job files and master files should have a security system to work on specific computers just like the CCS licence has. No doubt this has promoted the use of Candy but it is really concerning that a company's data can be distributed so freely without any consequence and support from the software. 2. The estimating worksheets are antiquated. There is no clip and paste functionality within the worksheets. The worksheets are not intelligent to enable one to pick up calculated values from within a worksheet as can be done on a spreadsheet. 3. The quantity calculation worksheets are antiquated. There is no functionality to use global variables, there is no copy and paste functionality, there is no ability to assign figures to use variables. The worksheets are not intelligent to enable one to pick up calculated values from within a worksheet as can be done on a spreadsheet. 4. The limitation of 40 characters in the resource file results in the need to abbreviate descriptions that are readily available for materials/resources from supplier price lists. Working off abbreviated descriptions means that you cannot use the same descriptions for procurement. Descriptions on Suppliers price lists are much more accurate and complete and usable for procurement purposes. 5. In all modules, there is no ability to readily copy a selected range of values within a column, to another input column. There are only a select few preprogrammed functions on some module menus that allow copying of values from one column to another. This should be a generalized function across all modules, that values can be copied into a column from what is in the clipboard. The ability to copy values into Candy input columns from Excell should also be a standard function. 6. In estimating, there is no option to edit the master while working on a job. This should be an option of whether the Master can be edited or not. The ability to add new items and edit items in the master on the fly as and when pricing a job will facilitate the improvement of the master with time. The master development currently stagnates as there is additional effort required to update the master after a new job has been priced, and this then does not happen. 7. Some of the reports do not update the calculations before printing, but rather use uncalculated values from within the data. This is a problem if the user does not calculate in the edit modes before printing. The printed documents then are inaccurate and there is no way of identifying this. 8. The multiuser version of Candy should not be an additional cost to users in my view. 9. There is inconsistency of how similar functions work in different modules. It is clear that different people have programmed the same functions for different modules over different times. For example the filter function in the BoQ module does not filter in the same way as the filter function in the planning module with regards to headings, the quantity calculation worksheets differ from module to module. Also the filter functions ignore the comment items. This forces one to assign headings to items. If the comment items were recognized this can save time. The use of this resource has proved invaluable to our organization. The ability to manage drawings effectively is another big plus regarding the software. It has allowed us to work collaboratively with engineers, architects and the like. With the built in auto save function, i know that my work is always safe in case of any accidental errors. and lastly, i cannot express how grateful i am for the constant support from RIB, whenever i need assistance, they are eager to help and very knowledgeable about the product itself. Cons Candy currently does not work well with one drive and we've experienced issues where the current working file was saved through a one drive path, but then the next time i wish to use that file, it is then an issue with how it is saved. I generally have no issues when saving to my C drive, however, my company protocol is to work off of onedrive and this causes some additional (unnecessary) work for me. From accuracy to efficiency, it has taken away the stress of errors and given me full control over costs, resources, comparisons, and project collaboration. It has directly helped me win more projects without post-award issues. Except for the security aspect, I find the software extremely reliable and indispensable for MEP estimation. Pros Since I started using Candy for MEP estimation, the entire way I handle tenders has improved. I’m able to respond to more RFQs, pricing errors are completely eliminated, and the review process during negotiation stages is much more effective. BOQ preparation has become error-free, unit rates are accurate, and labour/manhour allocation for each task is clearly identifiable and adjustable. The quote comparison feature is extremely efficient, and the wide variety of reporting modules makes managing estimates far easier. Overall, the software gave me a real breakthrough in my workflow—I’ve been able to secure a higher volume of projects with confidence that no quantities, BOQ valuations, or material/labour rates are missed. Customer support during implementation and day-to-day use of the software has been excellent. Candy QTO Software is well designed for reviewing drawings and designs, making quantity take-off and tracking much easier. Cons The main concern I have i, If a colleague resigns and moves to a competitor, it’s very easy to export the master file with all the resource lists and custom worksheets. Since I’ve invested a lot of effort building simple resources and complex worksheets with formulas tailored to specific tasks, there should be more restrictions or security layers to protect this data. With Regards to "Value for Money" i am neutral. Would love to see the full Build Smart suite available in NZ Pros Tried and tested, cost effective, secure construction management software that serves to effectively create, manage and share estimating documents. Allows transparency amongst users and accurate take offs of quantities from drawings. All this with reat customer service. Cons Occassionaly updates add a level of frustration when change is introduced. Not seamless operation with One Drive. Integrates well with other construction and accounting tools. Cons Can take time to learn all features. Licensing may be expensive for smaller firms. Some performance slowdown with very large projects. Cloud collaboration features are limited compared to newer platforms. It has made preparing and reviewing of estimates much easier compared to using the traditional Excel. Pros Quantity takeoff which can is linked to the BOQ. This is helpful especially when there are changes to drawings and design during tender stage. Project collaboration is easy in the sense that handing over the estimate to the project team is seamless. Great customer support - they are always ready to help and more importantly they have solutions for most if not all issues which we raise. Cons It would be helpful if Candy can be opened in more than one window. This would facilitate and ease comparison between 2 different jobs without having to make one a master. Our company uses Candy and all the feedback that I have received from people that have used it is overwhelm positive too, this goes for our Site Managers, Contract Managers and Quantity Surveyors. Pros The Planning software for me, is arguably the best planning software for Construction / Building in South Africa. The Estimating tool is used widely in our company and also a brilliant tool. Cons The Interface needs refreshing or updating. The undo functionality is something that could be brought in. It definitely made my job easier and helped me stay on top of measurements and costs. Would recommend to other QS guys on site. Pros Really liked how easy it was to use day to day. It made measuring and keeping track of everything much simpler. The support team was quick to help out when I had questions. Cons Sometimes it lagged a bit when things got busy, especially on the busiest days. A few features took a while to get used to, and I think some tools could be more intuitive.
