The learning curve wasn't too long, though there are always new things to pick up that improve your skills with this tool. I used it to host my first programming projects, as well as some more advanced ones later on. I also set it up as a calling card and portfolio for job applications. Pros A great platform for hosting code and projects in the cloud. It allows you to create repositories to maintain a history and version control of the code/project's development process. It requires some learning to use it properly, both in terms of the commands used in the development terminal and learning how to use the web interface. That said, it's easy to use once you understand what you're doing, and its design and interface are clean and intuitive. It enables team collaboration on the same project, allowing users to pull the code and work on it locally before pushing new changes. Pros GitHub is the backbone of our engineering workflow at NextDay AI. We run pull requests through it daily for our backend services, and the review flow (inline comments, suggested changes, required approvals before merge) makes it easy to keep code quality high even when we're shipping fast. GitHub Actions is tightly integrated, so our CI checks (tests, linting) run automatically on every PR and block merges if something breaks. Branch protection rules and the PR template system also help us keep a consistent process across the team, and linking PRs to ticket IDs makes it trivial to trace a change back to the original task. Cons The PR review UI can get sluggish on very large diffs (we occasionally touch big generated files or migrations), and finding a specific historical PR or comment thread through search is still clunkier than it should be. Notification management is also a bit overwhelming once you're on several active repos - it's easy for an important review request to get buried under less relevant activity unless you fine-tune your watch settings. Especially for our multi-developers workflows, and client based projects. Its costs and sometimes complex interface, however, make it a not one-size-fits-all solution. There are some problems, but its features and community make it an essential part of our development and deployment processes. Pros Version control system is crucial to our team. With the rise of remote work, developers can connect in more ways than ever before and pull requests and code reviews have significantly changed the way developers collaborate. The CI/CD pipelines integration allows for smoother deployments. What I also enjoy is the capacity to manage private repositories which is very important for client specific projects. Access comprehensive documentation, and the platform has a wealth of community resources for addressing issues rapidly. Cons The costs can easily accumulate, especially when scaling up team licenses or accessing more advanced features for a medium-sized company such as us. Additionally, the built-in project management features, while useful, are not as extensive or flexible as project management software, which we still use. At times, the workflows may be too complicated for it's intended purpose of junior developers new to the tools. Actions handles my deploys automatically and the free tier covers everything I need. Cons The interface can be overwhelming if you're new to Git, and the Actions YAML config takes some trial and error. Larger repos with media can get slow.
