Considering the value for money, GitHub integrates well for both smaller and larger projects. Reporting feature helps tracking project progress which makes workflow smooth. They have been conservative with adding features and I believe that's the right approach on the whole. Pros No-nonsense UI - it is one of the few where I never got use out of the "Zapper" tool of uBlock Origin, as everything has its place. Very good documentation for all parts of GitHub. Strong integrations with just about everything that affects a software development lifecycle. Clear ways to interact with it through many forms, including a rich command line client. Also, a high number of developers are on it which is a great boon for open source projects. Cons Data portability - the issue tracker is deliberately quite simple (and I don't think it should be made more complex) but after a certain point, does not scale to everyone's needs. It is hard to move off of GitHub, at least for tracking issues. The pull request review process is quite noisy and sometimes hard to get to grips with. For example, it's not clear that you need to "Submit" your review to actually propose changes. The propose changes feature is very nice as it means you don't have to leave your browser, but is not very clearly exposed in the UI. Some social elements are undesirable, like "Achievements", which lead to drive-by interactions with open source projects. Their users are "in GitHub", but not "in projects" so to speak. I believe this creates poor incentives for the open source community, as it brings people further apart from becoming long term contributors, as they are chasing virtual badges instead of real community engagement. Github has a lot of cool tools like pipelines, AI code editors, and other offerings that make this a must have tool for any modern developer. Pros Github is now the defacto standard for version control. Easy to use and works great! I used to use BitBucket before Github, but the interface on Github is much better. Cons Some of the recent pushes are more focused on bringing in money. I like when they pushed usage more. Developers would use the product forcing companies to buy into the project. Although the features are extensive, setup can be confusing for new developers. Additionally, the AI features like copilot lag behind major alternative AI coding tools. GitHub provides a centralized platform for version control, pull requests, code reviews, issue tracking, and CI/CD automation, making the entire software development lifecycle more efficient. It has helped our team collaborate more effectively, maintain a reliable history of code changes, and catch issues early through automated workflows and peer reviews. This has reduced deployment risks, improved code quality, accelerated feature delivery, and made it easier to manage projects of all sizes from development through production. Pros What I like best about GitHub is that it provides a complete platform for version control, collaboration, and modern software development. The pull request workflow, branching model, code reviews, and issue tracking make it easy for teams to collaborate while maintaining high code quality. GitHub integrates seamlessly with CI/CD tools, IDEs, cloud platforms, and third-party services, allowing development workflows to be automated from code commit to deployment. The user interface is intuitive for everyday tasks, and features like GitHub Actions, Discussions, and Projects help keep development organized. I also appreciate the growing AI capabilities, such as GitHub Copilot integration, which improves developer productivity by assisting with code generation and suggestions. Overall, GitHub has streamlined collaboration, accelerated development, and made managing projects much more efficient. Cons One area where GitHub could improve is discoverability and navigation, especially for large repositories with many branches, workflows, and pull requests. The learning curve wasn't too long, though there are always new things to pick up that improve your skills with this tool. I used it to host my first programming projects, as well as some more advanced ones later on. I also set it up as a calling card and portfolio for job applications. Pros A great platform for hosting code and projects in the cloud. It allows you to create repositories to maintain a history and version control of the code/project's development process. It requires some learning to use it properly, both in terms of the commands used in the development terminal and learning how to use the web interface. That said, it's easy to use once you understand what you're doing, and its design and interface are clean and intuitive. It enables team collaboration on the same project, allowing users to pull the code and work on it locally before pushing new changes. It's also a great addition to a resume when applying for jobs, since it serves as a kind of portfolio or calling card as a programmer. Any issues or bugs can be reported through the "issues" section. Cons It has storage limitations. Repositories are limited to 1 GB, and a single file can't exceed 100 MB. It's stable, has very few bugs, offers incredible value for money, and is an essential tool in my coding life. Pros Hosting repos is flawless, and features like pull requests and actions make daily CI/CD seamless. It's incredibly easy to use and is the gold standard for version control. Cons Finding support is slow, and native project management features like Projects feel clunky compared to Jira. I also wish there were better built-in team chat options.
