Pros: In the beginning Tesseract only had support English. Now newer versions can support up to 40 languages.
Tesseract is a simple Command line utility which is very easy to use. To use it, simply run the command with input and output.

Cons: It stopped supporting the older versions. I have used 3.2 version for windows version for my project purpose, and earlier I was able to download supported languages around 10 while installing the software. Now those locations are changed and I was unable to download those languages.
It is better if they can support older versions too.
Tesseract can only read TIFF files. If you want to use a picture with a different formats like JPEG, PNG, PDF you need to convert these files and then process first.
It has to improve its performance by time wise.

Overall: Tesseract is verygood tool for doing teh OCR, and it is available for windows as well as Linux versions.
