Pros It connects things, and as far as I can see, it has done so (at this point in time), which was very impressive. Cons I do not believe that searching for the "hidden" settings of how to configure some of these "hidden" features is unreasonable to spend your time doing. If it takes you at least three separate levels in the "activity log" menu path to get there, then maybe it should be named differently. It often times does not even inform you when one of your zaps fails; therefore, it could be hours before you notice. It removes the boring plumbing between forms, spreadsheets, and notifications, and it has been reliable in the sense that when something does break it is almost always the upstream API rather than Zapier itself. Setup took no real learning curve, and I had my first useful automation running the same evening I signed up. My honest view as an engineer is that it is excellent value while your volume is low and hard to justify once it is not. If a workflow becomes important and fires constantly, there is a point where writing and hosting the script yourself is simply cheaper. Up to that point I would rather spend my evenings on the actual project than on glue code, and Zapier earns its keep for that alone. I would recommend it to anyone who wants working automation without owning infrastructure, with the caveat that you should model your task usage before you commit to a plan. Pros The integration library is the real selling point. Almost every service I wanted to connect for a side project already had a working app, so I skipped writing and hosting my own webhook handlers and cron jobs. As a software engineer I could have built most of these flows myself, but Zapier gets a multi step automation running in about ten minutes and I do not have to babysit a server or pay for one. The editor is clear, testing each step while you build catches bad field mappings early, and the run history makes it obvious which step failed and what data it received. Multi step Zaps with filters and formatter steps cover far more ground than I expected before you need real code, and the built in Code step is there for the cases that do. Cons Pricing is the main problem. Everything is metered per task, and a task is any single step that runs, so a five step Zap burns five tasks every time it fires. A polling trigger on a busy source eats through a monthly allowance quickly, and the jump between plan tiers is steep for a personal project rather than a funded team. I ended up adding filter steps early in my Zaps purely to avoid paying for runs I did not need, which is not how I want to design an automation. Polling intervals on the lower tiers are also slow, so anything that needs to feel immediate has to be rebuilt around a webhook trigger. Alternatives considered [Make](https://www.capterra.com/p/154278/Integromat/) [n8n.io](https://www.capterra.com/p/198028/n8n-io/) Reasons for choosing Zapier The size of the app catalog decided it. Make and n8n both looked capable, and n8n was tempting because I could self host it, but every hour spent running my own automation server is an hour not spent on the actual project. Zapier already had maintained apps for everything I needed, so I had working automations the same evening instead of standing up infrastructure first. The tradeoff is that I pay per task rather than per server, which is cheap at my volume and would not be if my volume grew.
