Pros: Set up to document all phases of counseling; ability to upload documents into client records; MSE with each progress note; can email clients through client portal for HIPPA compliance; clients can securely complete, sign, and submit intake paperwork through client portal; ability to accept credit and debit cards easily for services rendered; GREAT invoicing and billing features; automated appointment reminders; integrated calendar; multi clinician capability; Wiley planner and progress note features; the reports feature is fantastic for tracking payments, invoices, and notes status. Subscribers can also develop custom forms for clients or for clinician documentation needs. The help and tutorial features are easy to follow, and customer service has been responsive. TheraNest continually seeks feedback about subscriber needs and uses that feedback to improve their product. There is also an internal office chat box feature.

Cons: Like any product, it is not perfect. The calendar feature is good but has room for improvement with respect to appointments spilling into nonwork hours or the occasional time I choose to see clients outside my regular hours to compensate for conferences or other needs taking time from my regular client schedule. I understand this issue is being addressed. Progress notes can be lengthy due to incorporation of the client's entire treatment plan into the note. I have yet to find a way to mark treatment goals and objectives as completed in the treatment plan even when using the review feature. This would be a helpful feature to track a client's progress quickly and for planning future session interventions to address unmet goals.

Pros: TheraNest has EVERYTHING in one place. I have search high and low for several years; applied, signed up, and trialed several other soft-wares, and none of them compare to TheraNest. The Client Portal is a surprise when I share the feature with my patients. The Customer Service being accessible to all providers (Inters and Residents alike) is a huge plus so I do not find myself training (and retraining) through the semester to a new class when they can find the answers easily on their own.
TheraNest makes the end of my session a 10 min wrap up with documentation, and the end of my day a 5 min wrap up to submit ALL billing. I save money on not having to hire a full-time employee to manage my billing and claims; merely a contract when there is an issue with the insurance themselves and a phone call is needed beyond my knowledge.

Cons: The only thing I could ever wish for, is prescribing rights and abilities. I plan to expand my company into the Medical Realm eventually, and this is a feature I plan to discuss with the developing team.

Pros: I like that you can send text reminders. It helps with the no show rate in our clinic. They have great customer service - but customer service only goes so far when the software isn't working correctly.

Cons: Form the scheduling to billing this software is riddled with functionality gaps and bugs. As a facility that have therapists and prescribing physicians the scheduling feature doesn't allow you to setup defined appointment times. Basic schedulers should allow you to define the types of appointments in your clinic and assign a time frame to them. This same functionality should extend to the TheraNest portal. Patients can go online and request any appointment time. For example an initial intake in our clinic with the psychiatrist is one hour. A patient can go line and find any available time (they typically find 15 min slots) and submit a request to schedule that time. This results in calling the patient back and finding a time. What's the point of allowing the patient to schedule/request a time if I have to call them back? I should be able to define an initial intake as an hour so my staff can't schedule that type of an appointment for less than an hour AND patients on the portal can't request an appointment for less than an hour. We finally shut the portal off because it was causing more work calling patients back then if they'd initially called and were scheduled from the get go.
If you have any patients with co insurance get ready to spend an ungodly amount of time processing the secondary insurance. While they say they support secondary insurance they do not. You have to manually enter all of the information onto the claim for the secondary insurance.

Overall: I do not understand where the rave reviews have come from for this software. My only guess is these reviews are from single clinician offices. If you have more than one clinician or a prescriber in your practice I would suggest selecting another software.

Recommendations to other buyers: I have run out of space on the "cons section" so I will continue to write in this spot. If you are a prescribing facility they completely missed the mark on how CPT codes are used and billed. They calculate a co payment for each CPT code. This is a little disconcerting as had anyone referenced the CPT coding manual for behavioral health they would have seen that all visits are coded/billed with two CPT. This flaw then trickles down to the report that you use to pay out your staff as they calculate a co payment for each CPT - resulting in incorrect payouts to staff. This design flaw for prescribers also linked into the calendar. While you can setup CPT code combinations (which you have to use to schedule) as we all know you don't know what CPT codes you will actually use until you see the patient. I should be able to setup the type of appointment and the time frame for that "appointment type", i.e initial intake, follow up, therapy intake, therapy follow up, etc. Then, once they are seen by the physician they code the E&M and time CPT codes. Conversely, if they are being seen by a therapist they would also code the CPT code based on the visit. If your clinic sees a lot of EAP or other types of visits that require modifiers - forget it you've just created an inordinate amount of work to try and use them. I don't have enough space to detail out the flaws and problems our clinic has encountered. You can contact me for additional details and information.

All potential customers have a free 21-day trial period, to test the software in order to make an informed decision. We do as much as possible to support our customers and take all customer requests seriously, but the software is sold as-is, and we make no attempts to represent the software as something it isn't. Though we don't market our software to psychiatrists due to their unique needs, TheraNest seemed to initially be a good fit for you. However, your growth to a group psychiatry practice is something that TheraNest clearly is not meant to accommodate. Comments: I have been using TheraNest for approximately 6 months. Here are some of my thoughts.

Pros:
Excellent User Interface. Very logical and intuitive to use, and a clean design.
Very cost effective for practices with multiple clinicians.
Extremely responsive technical support.
Easy to use mobile applications.
Nice features for streamlined and integrated billing, invoices, and SuperBills being created and sent to clients.
Integrated CC processing.
Patient portal for submitting intake paperwork. (add on charges)
Patient reminders with SMS and phone calls. (add on charges)
Excellent Up-Time and great communication from the owner.

Cons:
Limited customization options for the interface, reports, and standard progress notes.
Not really fitting for practices with a prescribing professional.
Creation of patient forms can be tedious and is not easily ported between TN accounts for different practices.
Lack of ability to connect businesses with separate Tax IDs to a master account. (Modern practices increasingly use teletherapy, which can mean multiple business locations, Tax IDs, etc., and each location needs a separate TN account.)
Lack of ability to connect the calendars of multiple practice locations to prevent double booking or double data entry.
Overly basic invoicing and SuperBill formats without customization options (Per tech support, this is currently being revised, but is not yet released.)
Inability to customize the Dashboard metrics, and current monitoring tools have limited practical utility. (Poor cash flow tracking, no notice of unwritten notes, etc.)
Overly limited options for clinician site access (It is essentially either a decision to allow clinicians access to all billing information, or none.)
Limited payment tracking for tracking payments to clinicians.

Overall, I have chosen to stay with TheraNest, and am happy with the simplicity of it all. If the developers continue to help the site evolve, and address some or all of the concerns noted above, I will most likely stay with them and renew my contract for another year.

Comments: We have been users of Theranest for the last year. It is very, very user friendly, especially compared with some of the other products that we demo'd. Most things were very, very well --- scheduling, appointment reminders, progress notes, reporting features that help us know who is current with progress notes and assessments and who has gotten behind, treatment planning and diagnostic features. We do not use the Wiley Treatment Planner library, but we might at some point and are thrilled that it is available. We initially used the merchant account features to run credit/debit/flex cards through the system, but we found we could save considerably by having a merchant account with our bank instead. Switching back and forth was not a problem. We have generally been very pleased with most aspects of the service, especially the finance terms. This platform works very well for a practice that has several clinicians and when the work is exclusively individuals, couples or families.

Pros: We love it that we pay a rate based on the number of active clients, not the number of users. We have several part-time staff who want and need to be able to use the same system, and other EHRs charge by clinician. The best part, though, is that it looks and feels very much like a paper record, and getting tech-anxious clinicians to make the switch from paper really very easy. Even the most reluctant found that they love it and do not complain about changing from paper to EHR.

Cons: Group rosters, group notes and scheduling of groups is possible but definitely a weak area for Theranest. Other weak areas include the way the ledger interfaces with attendance in the creation of invoices and superbills (putting cancellations on them, even if there was no charge). And lastly, reporting features could be better for helping practice managers better assess productivity and other information. The dashboard looks great, but as far as I can tell, we can't change the data that the graphics are pulling from and they always are reporting information that is from the beginning of the practice's use of Theranest, not with any particular timeframe or different variables. This may be possible to change, but if so, it's not easy enough for THIS user to figure it out.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you provide a lot of group counseling services, proceed with caution. If you have lots of part-time or contract counselors who provide 1:1 services, this is a great product!

Pros: The mobile feature; Notes/scheduling/billing all in 1 program and platform; Client portal; Visually easy to understand and use without a lot of needed guidance;

Cons: 1) The notes are rudimentary and unprofessional 'looking' when you print them. 2) The signature feature does not have enough characters to include full name and credentials & the hand-written option ends up looking like a preschooler signed your name; 3) all the demographic and other info that a ct fills out in ct portal forms DO NOT auto-populate to your intkae note template or anywhere, so you end up having to re-type a tone of information; 3) ct oprtal forms are easy to edit, but the actual intake and progress forms are NOT editable. They advertise "customizable forms" but neglect to tell you that if you use these, you don't get any of the built-in, dynamic software features such as the DSM-5 dx box, all demographic info, date/etc... that's the whole point- you can't run reports on these notes, etc.!!! 4) the text boxes that you type you notes in are not user-friendly...you have to scroll down if you type a longer paragraph in order to read/view and edit it. It's time-consuming and difficult to review your note. 5) not easy to upload photos or handouts that you and a ct create. You have to email it to yourself, download it and then upload it to TheraNest...too many steps! Overall, the note taking features in this EMR are poor.

Comments: I switched from simple practiced to theranest due to the ease of billing (I know which session was paid for v total paid which helped me organize and communicate about billing to clients and group notes and therapy...). Now I feel like simple practice has made such advancements. I am considering switching back as I have yet to see improvements I've been wanting. I'm sure there are more comments but these are what I can think of off the top of my head.

Pros: Billing of knowing which sessions were paid for, dashboard service, price, text reminder, mental health status exam ease on progress note.

Cons: Lack of HIPPA security when sending superbills/invoices which makes sending these securely cumbersome and time consuming (there's a button in the ledger titled "email client" and it doesn't email this securely (password protected/encrypted which means more time consuming steps for clinician), limitations of portal which I don't pay for because of it (intake only v ongoing communication tool)...just because Theranest email is secure, doesn't mean the client's is. Group notes are cumbersome as if you don't do things in a certain order, diagnoses do not make the superbill. This requires repeated tasks and eventually a phone consult with theranest and a lot of backpedaling to get necessary documents to the client accurately. Limitations in editing progress notes...creating custom forms isn't easy. Can't send customer forms post-intake to update things like medications and other changes to have completed electronically (back to portal limitations).

Comments: The software is really good for a new private practice. Like any EHR software there is always a learning curve. For practitioners who are already adept with other EHR software this is fairly simple and learning curve is not difficult. At the beginning it may seem difficult but you can test/tinker around with the features without any negative consequences. Suggest you create a test dummy client and play with the features. You can delete the dummy file later.

Customer services has been positive in all my interactions. I did not feel like I got stiffed any money or felt like customer service is a robotic call center in another country. Customer service always was courteous and tried their best to answer questions. If a problem arose, they tried their best to solve it or if it was a issue out of their hand, they were up front & responsible in their responses.

The features are what a private practice needs including a) prog. notes b) ledger & forms for billing c) treatment plans d) built in assessment e) graphs to track cancellations, outstanding ledgers, and payments f) calendar for appointment schedules g) ability to upload documents to client's record and more. As a single software source for a private practice one really doesn't need extra software than TheraNest.

The only flaw I ran into was the claims process. Specific insurance companies and Medicaid require specific boxes on claim to be filled in a specific way. The service location is the challenge on form 1500 which created a small headache. If you use one service location and that is all then it should be no problem. If you have 3 - 4 service locations such as multiple offices and you have to bill each location with a different number then it can be a little challenge. The problem can be remedied at the next level of billing at the clearinghouse which is what I did. In simple terms if you are just a single private practice and have one location then this issue will not arise. This is why TheraNest is great for private practices rather than large corporations.

Cost for Theranest is decent because it charges based on the number of clients. Also if you have between 2 - 5 active clients, the cost is already covered once your claims get paid. At the time I started it was around $ - $ a month. With a single claim of $ - $ paid, the cost is already covered.

Overall, I highly recommend it for a private practice and clinicians who are just getting started in their own practice.

Pros: Flexibility to manage the calendar without losing information. I like the options. Being able to add service codes for a busy practice.
The in-practice chat is invaluable for the clients using it. Search and expanded view are very helpful.
Powerful and speedy when uploading files.
Real support. I've made requests for changes (along with others) and received attention. I've found some 'hacks' that made my task go smoother and enjoyed sharing them with support.
Colorful. May seem a little thing, but we can have distinctive identity on the calendar for each or for all. Not necessary to open a completely different screen.
Every effort to be secure. Never a problem with security or an uneasy hint that things aren't working right.
Almost zero down time. We're working with 'machines', there is bound to be some down time, but the occurrences have been rare and quickly solved.
Professional action. This reflects on patient desire for security. The appearance and behaviors for entering information are professional.
Ample patient reminders. Patients can respond to reminders to connect with me if we miss one another on the phone. Email is especially good for this.
I reviewed this software about a year ago and have come to like it even more.

Cons: A disappearing con: tutorials and knowledge base has expanded during the time I've been using the software.

Overall: Professional benefits for practice management.

Love the training and customer service responsiveness, but some key features aren't well thought out

Pros: Customer service and responsiveness is very impressive. Now that I understand how it all works together, appointment scheduling and notes are very easy to use. I used to love that they have integrated credit card processing, but for the way we run our business it has a serious flaw. They are very open to feedback, and try to be responsive to features being asked for. Since we've signed up with them in January they have added quite a few new features, some of which are really helpful, others that don't apply to the way we happen to run our business.

Cons: Some features only seem half thought out. For example: you can write one group note and have it appli to all members of the group, but in order to sign the note you have to go into each members account. This completely negates the time saved by applying the note to all group members with one key stroke. We are a small clinic and use this as our accounts receivable software also, yet there is no accounts receivable report you can generate. They have something called an "Invoice Aging" report that lists each clients outstanding invoices, but you have to go through and manually add up all the lines to get the total. To me, having an accounts receivable report should be standard. Just give me their name and the total of what they owe us. And now for the biggest con for us: The integrated credit card processing. The structure of our clinic is that each of us earns exactly what our clients pay us (in crude terms, we "eat what we kill"). For this reason when we get a deposit in our bank account we need to be able to easily identify what transactions make up that so we can give the correct therapist credit for it. There is currently no way to get this info. Theranest suggested we look at a list of payments recently made and figure out a combo that add up. This is way too time intensive (we have a bookkeeper we have to pay to do this) and it's prone to error. We're hoping they fix this soon

Pros: The user friendly software, color scheme, and efficiency is what I like most. I recommend it to my clients and I have not gotten one complaint about your EHR. It is great for the administrative staff, clients (Therabook), and the therapist. I love that their staff make me feel like we are one big happy family working together. My questions are answered in a timely manner and they are answered effectively. The same day I might add. Theranest is the best choice for a mental health private practice.

Cons: I honestly do not have a CON. I guess since I have to submit 100 characters as a min. I will say.... I setup many account for different mental health professionals and I have to use a different email every time. That can be a pain, because I do business with my company email.

Overall: I aids my practice in running efficiently in all areas.

Pros: TheraNest is one-stop shopping! For an affordable monthly cost, I get everything I need to keep my practice running smoothly - I can schedule patients, send them forms ahead of their appointment via the Client Portal, submit my insurance claims in two simple clicks, and keep track of my income by running monthly reports. I also like being able to write assessments and progress notes in my own style using the customs forms feature. Can't forget about customer support; TheraNest is great over the phone, and they certainly listen to customer requests by continuously adding new features each month. For someone looking for a paperless and organized practice, TheraNest is a must!

Cons: TheraNest can be a touch confusing when initially navigating its features. However, after repeated practice, I now find it so simple and easy to use. I wish the Client Portal/Custom Forms could be advanced so that we can change the font size and have control over bolding/italicizing/underlining certain headings and words.

Pros: The client portal and the fact that the intake can be done online! I love custom forms, the appointment reminders, emails, payroll.... I love it all! I especially love the customer service. I'm a loyal customer especially because of the way they are with their customers (texting, emailing and constant improvements). 10 stars!

Cons: Id like payroll to be able to have the option to select the payouts due tab and pay clinicians when claims are paid in full. Copays are attached to this currently and I have to select "copay paid to clinician" even though it's not in order for payouts due to work the way I need it to.

I also need to be able to print out a demographics sheet on a single client to an option.

I'd also like the email to have a time that an email was sent.

Pros: It looks great, the implementation of Wiley planner is fantastic, and it gets the job done. The color scheme is nice (it looks pretty)

Cons: Extra fees for: wiley planner, customer portal, reminders, adding staff (pay once to add them, then to give access to wiley, then to give access to client portal!), more than 30 clients, etc! Plus, there is a 10 mb limit on uploading docs to client files. The editor for the intake paperwork is atrocious (let me upload a PDF!). The credit card payments take MONTHS to post in your account. No direct notifications when a client messages you! Unable to edit "non patient appointments" on the mobile app! Several buttons within forms direct you away from a page WITHOUT SAVING PREVIOUS INFORMATION! I've worked with other EHR's in the past and this one is not the worst, but the fees leave a bad taste in my mouth. There are other EHR's that just offer a flat rate and do ALL of these functions. I will be switching at the end of the year.

Overall: Nothing I didn't already get from other EHR's. Nothing special.

Overall: I second all the glowing reviews but our Group bills Public Payers (Medicare, Tricare, Medicaid) in addition to commercial payers. We loved the user interface and ability to set up locations, accept payments, billing interface, and access /caseloads.

Theranest has THE best pricing of the competitors. Most EHRs want to charge by # of Providers. That works great if every Therapist is Full Time. Theranest charges by tiers of # of active Clients so their pricing is linked to your revenue. GREAT Concept!

However the Progress Note feature does not work for our Payers. The built-in SOAP Note is the only Note that will integrate with the client's treatment plan. Our Payers require that each Note is linked to a Treatment Goal. Also ALL of our Payers require PIE or BIRP format. Our therapist were not able to select/change the CPT/Service code when they completed their Clinical Service Note. The CPT/Svc code selection is made in the Appointment Screen and the therapist would have to go to another screen to change the Service Code. All the Therapist sees is the session elapsed time that they can change , for example, 60 minutes can be for family or Ind. therapy (different CPT codes). Also it puts the burden on the scheduler to choose the correct service vs the Therapist that conducts the session. Also, there was no way to seemingly enter an Add-on CPT code (complexity/crisis) to the primary service.

AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I did the 30 day trail and asked for a 14 day extension they were very accommodating. Wish the Progress Note documentation had met our needs.

Pros: online, secure, works through officeAlly.com, keeps improving with more features or fixes added regularly, price is acceptable if you can keep inactive clients de-activated-but see below for what interferes with that.

Cons: way more clicks per action than seem necessary. Very hard to keep track of payments because ERA listings have no information in the list (so you have to open every one to see who it is for and what dates and what insurance etc.) we're resorted to going to office ally, getting the info there, then working to record payments and write-offs in theranest.
no one available to hire to do any of this (I asked theranest)
waiting a day or longer for an email answer to questions, means you don't have the help when you have the time available to do the desk work

Pros: Life is busy, and this streamlines my practice so that info, notes, and billing are all just clicks away. It is so easy to bill insurance companies, and the encryption for credit cards is a dream!

Cons: Now that the format has been updated, it's easier to navigate. Glitches that I experience are probably due to me- lol! The app does not have the all of the options available on the site. I'd love to be able to submit billing through the app. As of now, it does not appear that clients have the option of signing in to do paperwork, schedule, etc. That would be a helpful option.

Comments: I have been using TheraNest for nearly two years. I compared it to three other popular online practice management subscription software programs for mental health professionals and decided on TheraNest because its features met the needs of my practice and because the customer service is suberb.

PROS: The program provides easy calendaring, full case documentation capability with printable case notes, a great mental status assessment feature, an ICD-10 compatible diagnosis selector, excellent invoice and superbill capability, color-coded client balance indicators, optional client reminders, optional client portal, insurance billing, optional credit card capability, capability to upload files and other documentation from your computer, batch client billing, custom form creation, a wide range of "report" features to help track one's practice, and much more. The program is generally simple to navigate. Customer service/support are absolutely superb: responses to inquiries are rapid, courteous, personable, thorough, and effective. Beyond providing outstanding service, the customer support personnel and the development team have been highly receptive to my suggestions for improvement and for new features that I hoped to see incorporated in the program. To my delight, quite a number of changes to the program have occurred as a direct result of my suggestions and recommendations. That has made me feel like not merely a user of TheraNest, but rather like a participant in its evolution, which has been very exciting for me. I use this progam multiple times a day, every work day. I depend on it heavily and enjoy using it. I have never regretted making the switch from a traditional file and paper practice to TheraNest's online subscription service.

CONS: Very few, indeed. I would love to see greater integration within the program from a user interface perspective, a little more attention paid to logical workflow, a little less redundancy with respect to access links and buttons, some further cleanup of (by now relatively minor) inconsistencies in tab, page, button, and link labeling; I would also prefer a more modern overall "look" to the program, but that is my aesthetic preference and is not a significant issue for me in the big picture.

I recommend this program highly and without reservation!

Pros: Theranest has provided me with ease of billing, documentation, and scheduling clients. Their fees are very reasonable and you get a lot for the price you pay. The staff are consistently looking for ways to improve their produce and regularly incorporate suggestions from their customers. Their customer support team is efficient, kind, and professional. I had a situation wherein I needed to get reimbursed for an added feature due to me not being able to use it. Due to personal circumstance, I was unable to request the reimbursement immediately and they were very empathetic and helped me. Their team offered condolences, virtual hugs, and were readily available to provide additional support as needed. It was a testimony that this is an organization who really cares about its customers.

Cons: Most of their customer service is provided via online. I prefer talking to a live person over the phone; however, when you electronically submit a question, they are very quick to provide a resolution.

Overall: I love how I can use one system to schedule clients, complete documentation (intake, diagnostic impressions, treatment plan, case notes), billing (private pay or insurances via clearinghouse, and credit card processing). It helps me to stay organized and sets reminders for tasks.

Pros: It's all-in-one and I only have to learn one program to take care of scheduling, notes, billing, etc.

Cons: The thing I like least about TheraNest is that there isn't a price break as you gain more clients.

Pros: We think that TheraNest is overall easy to use and staff in our office quickly learned the functions. It has been very reliable and is continuously updated to add new features and improvements. Again we have been very grateful for the customer service and tech support that is on-going. Lastly this was this software product offered all the functions (i.e. scheduling, reminders, billing, documentation) we were looking for at a reasonable price.

Cons: Some cons would include the lack of customization available for clinical documentation. We have created work-arounds for this but it would be nice if we could fully use the software for all our clients. Although you can make a custom form, this isn't integrated into the reports function either. Similarly it would be great if there was more custom reporting options in general. However, I feel that for the affordability this is an acceptable compromise.

Overall: I'll start by saying TheraNest has some of the best customer service I have ever encountered which made the difficult transition to using practice management software so much easier for our office. We are a small non-profit mental health counseling agency that was badly in need of updating office efficiency. From the very beginning of setting up a demo to on-going questions, they have been patient, understanding, and very helpful. We also found this software to be the most affordable option with the most features after A LOT of research. We are very pleased overall!

Pros: I like the ease of billing, very simple and quick. Theranest offers classes to increase knowledge of billing and how to avoid mistakes.

Cons: I would like to see other options available on the invoices and billing set-up. An example of this is: when billing for out-of-network benefits a person must meet their deductible first. The way the system is set up now, you have to bill the insurance first, then go back and accept a payment. This payment is this categorized as the client overpaying for services. It would be nice for this kind of a scenario to have a simplified way of completing this transaction.

Comments: I have used several scheduling and billing programs in my private practice and find Theranest to be a top contender. Theranest offers a wide variety of useful tools, such as scheduling, schedule reminders, electronic insurance claims, billing, documentation, and analytics for attendance, billing, and scheduling. I have been using Theranest for a few years now and find it to be relatively glitch-free, and when I encounter an issue or have a question, customer service is extremely helpful and quick to respond.

Pros: Theranest does a great job when it comes to submitting electronic insurance claims, creating superbills and/or invoices, and has plenty of storage for electronic files. Theranest also has an ios application that is user-friendly and helps with scheduling and task management.

Cons: The program is not very user-friendly, unlike SimplePractice which offers a more streamlined and clean look. Theranest needs to work on their calendar feature as it is not user-friendly or very practical.

Comments: My colleagues and I began with a very comprehensive - and expensive - software that was confusing and frustrating to navigate. After doing a free trial twice and speaking with customer service about questions and concerns, we decided to switch to TheraNest. After being in business for a year, we have no regrets doing so. It continues to grow with us. And, we could not be happier with the software and team at TheraNest

Comments: This software will work well if you are a single practice owner. If you have a group of therapists it could be a near disaster
1) the software runs from a calendar and not from actual note entries. If you don't update your calendar after a postponed visit, your bills will be based on the previous calendar date. So you could accidentally bill for a date you didn't provide care (original date) and not bill for the actual date that service was provided (new date).
This could be disastrous if you ever get audited by the insurance company. I have made several calls regarding this issue and actually requested to explain to the software developer how to fix the issue since I do have a programming background. All the programmer has to do is out a hard block if a therapist is trying to enter a note without an appointment on the calendar then the therapist MUST be redirected to create a new calendar appointment in order to proceed. In that way, it will be guaranteed that the calendar appointment actually has a treatment note affiliated to it.
2) we signed up with Availity as our clearing and could never really get it integrated with theranest. Reconciling receivables is nonexistent because payments don't get updated as promised
3) we have several service providers who are paid per treatment provided. Payroll visit summation is non-existent. It is very tedious counting actual treatment notes per patient/per therapist. I literally have to pull up every patient, sort by the therapist and then go in and count each treatment note for the payroll two week pay period.
Honestly, our census is growing and hiring more therapists and it would be impossible for us to continue using theranest if these issues are not addressed and fixed.
4) Therapists can open new cases unnecessarily especially when they are new to the software. The software should put a stop to that unless that patient is being re-admitted to therapy after a significant break (6 months and up). We have to go in and manually close all of the extra cases.

One pro is the cost. There is learning curve involved.

Comments: I am a therapist working in private practice; I do all my own record keeping and accounts.

Pros - Fantastic provider support - quick, friendly, and personable. Very reasonable monthly rates. Once you get the hang of it, quite easy to use. Pretty to look at.

Cons - It was much harder than expected to learn how to navigate the software. Connecting to the electronic billing was difficult, cumbersome, and extremely time-consuming. First you have to set up electronic billing agreements with each insurance provider. Then, billing information for each insurance company, and in some instances, each plan within the company, has to be entered individually and with great care to make sure it is working right. For instance, an EAP within United/Optum might be billed under a completely different customer ID than their regular individual coverage. YOU have to make sure everything is exactly right. Expect this, initially, to take many hours of tedium - and expect a hiccup whenever a plan, copay, or coverage changes. I don't know if this is true of all record-keeping software programs, or particularly Theranest, but it is a pain.

Specific things I don't love about Theranest mostly include financial/bookkeeping functions. When I receive a payment, I have to receive it manually in TWO places - the client's ledger, and also the Submitted Claims section. This is silly. Also, maneuvering between sections is not intuitive (for me, anyway) and it took awhile to become adept.

Pros: Very user friendly

Cons: In the mental status section of the progress note, the drop downs do not go away when you type in the box unless you save each time you move from one block to the next. The Wiley progress notes are not accessible from the calendar and that often causes time errors.

Overall: The system is very user-friendly and the support staff is very prompt in their response time, very knowledgeable and correct issues or help direct clinicians to where they need to go. They also have been constantly in communication with a therapist to improve the system. They have implemented many new aspects to the program which continues to make record keeping easier and less time-consuming.

Pros: Easy to use

Cons: I have more than one clinician so if an appt is scheduled for one clinician it's next to impossible to click in the same appt slot to schedule an appointment for another clinician. I do realize that the appt can be made by selecting the staff member and doing it that way but it would just be easier if there was a way to do it from the screen that shows all the appts for all the clinicians.

The other thing is having to pay a separate fee per clinician to use the treatment planner.

Overall: Support is TERRIFIC and extremely timely. Darcy in particular. She is super friendly and an excellent communicator. She deserves a raise.... just saying..

Pros: I love the ease of entering standard notes, templates, the ease with which one can create invoices. The integration with insurance clearinghouses (I use Office Ally) was the main selling point for me. Keeping track of finances, billing, invoices is very easy. Customer service is very responsive and helpful.

Cons: There are a few little tasks that need to be entered manually more than once. For example, an insurance claim that is paid needs to be marked paid, then entered again. Not a big deal.

Overall: Ease of managing a solo psychology practice. Help with insurance claims. Easier tracking of notes, invoices, billing.

Pros: Treatment plans, progress notes, and scheduling are a breaze. Setting up credit card payments was also very easy. All the diagnostic codes are there. Also, as someone with a part-time private practice, paying by the number of active clients vs. number of clinicians using the software keeps the price down. It's easy to set up text or email appointment reminders. I don't work with insurance panels, but it looks easy to do.

Cons: It's a little annoying that there's an extra fee to set it up so that clients can use the client portal to do scheduling, but this wasn't an important feature to me anyway, so I just haven't bothered with it.

Overall: I was wary of getting cloud-based software and paying a monthly fee vs. a one-shot-deal. Theranest is so worth it. They are constantly improving features; it is mostly intuitive to use; and customer support is always available and fast.

Overall: I LOVE TheraNest. I have been a customer for a year and a half, and it makes notes, billing, and payment so easy. I am the only employee for my part-time therapy practice, and Theranest allows me to do everything myself. I also purchased TheraBook, so that my clients can complete intake forms online before their appointments, as well as request appointments and make payments. I utilize the credit/debit card function because TheraNest's processing fees are comparable or lower than other platforms. I can do everything I need through TheraNest! Lastly, their customer service is amazing. They are so friendly, knowledgeable and quick.

Pros: The product is easy to use and has most of the basic features needed in a Practice Management software package. I was attracted to this product partly because of their pricing structure that is based on the number of clients and not the number of users. We employ a number of part-time therapists so this fit our business model much better than the majority of products that are priced based on the number of users.

Cons: The system does import ERAs but the insurance interface is not very reliable or robust. It does not import all of the EOB information as other products do and it is not integrated into the client ledger as well as it could be. Thus electronic payment benefit and payment information is not always accurate or complete and takes additional work to process payments. The reporting capability is also limited as there is no custom report feature. We end up using a lot of spreadsheets to manage insurance payments and issues and also having to use insurance portals such as Navinet and Provider Express which take a lot of extra time.

Recommendations to other buyers: Determine the level of billing support that you will need. While this package accomplishes the basics of insurance billing is lacks many of the features that will allow efficient processing of a large number of claims.

It's very user friendly and the customer service is great.

Cons: There are certain things I can't do with it, usually related to limitations in my preferences and lack of choices for certain functions. But I have suggested features and they seem open to suggestions.

Comments: Pros: Easy to use once I adjusted to the system. For all questions regarding use and/or added features, customers service (Travis!) has been phenomenal!, quick responses and great support for a new business owner and a go at establishing a paper-less practice! Codes needed were able to be added. Billing is easy but done manually each session with each client for the end of month bill which is charged to the saved credit card (love this feature)! Billing is quick - takes about 1 minute per client, which is fantastic (since the leg work is done during each session). Price is extremely reasonable for my practice's current needs.

Cons: More geared toward psych and less toward speech therapy. More geared toward a practice that is in an office and not one that travels to the client (but still making do and it's working well). Personally need info on the superbill to be included on an invoice (need more customizable invoice) for my families to submit to insurance on their own with all necessary practice and provider credentials included. Not able to select "community" for services provided have to create myself and manually add in but not listed as primary place of therapy for insurance purposes, even when it shows up somewhere on the superbill. Intake and other pages need to be more editable (eliminate suggested fields or add your own...and/or change the name of a field for a given practice) since all of the mental health fields are inappropriate for a pediatric SLP practice and prevents me from using half of the pre-made forms since I cannot send them to families with the data fields written on them as they currently exist.

Overall impressions: This is a great product and the customer service is out of this world, phenomenal! There have already been tweaks to the program and new additions based on requests I have made so I plan to stick with Theranest as they are the best I have found and the most responsive! (the most reasonable $$ too).

Pros: They update and improve it constantly, I found everything reasonably easy to learn except the ERAs
set up to help you do appropriate charting and notes. many features for any size practice. works through Office Ally. Responsive tech support.

Cons: tech support not available WHILE I¿m stuck and have time to work on it! comes a day or so later. seems like every action requires two or three unnecessary clicks.
I find it Very hard and confusing to manage incoming payments with ERA system. finally gave up and hired someone to figure it out (who works on another complex system) and she ended up using Office Ally to get the EOBs and then enter what is needed in Theranest. I wish they had someone available to hire already expert.
Email/chat support is responsive and reasonably helpful¿ but they may not get back for a day or so¿ which means when I have a few hours to work on or work through problems my time is wasted and the help is not helpful because it could be quite a while till i¿ve got desk time available again.

Overall: Much easier to enter payments are to correct mistakes or re-submit billing than several other programs.

Recommendations to other buyers: I¿ve quit several others from frustration. I can manage this one. the only one I still find easy is Shrinkrapt from Saner Software. but that lives in your computer rather than online.

Comments: I weighed options on a LOT of EMRs and did free trials on a number of them. They all have their shortcomings so you have to decide what you are willing to live without.
Things I love about theranest:
First of all, their customer service is TOP NOTCH. I swear I am on a first name basis with all of them. They are very easy to reach via email/instant message within theranest.
Secondly, the ability to link insurance claims, EOBs and accept credit cards within theranest reduce our work time substantially.
The EMR is also incredibly affordable for a group practice. When I was first researching options, I was astounded at how much they charged per month, per therapist. Theranest charges a flat rate depending on how many clients you have. You can have unlimited therapists which is perfect for our practice.
Their email and text reminders are a life saver and you can edit them both to say what you like (we updated ours in Spanish as well).
Downsides are few and like I said, you have to be willing to give up a few things. It's overwhelming to set up the insurance connections to be able to file electronically. But, after you do it once, you are good to go. I wish Theranest would email the therapist when a client electronically cancels their appointment so we have the opportunity to fill it asap, but it doesn't as of now. It does sync with google calendar but you cannot add things onto google calendar and have them show up on theranest- it only syncs one way.
The biggest downside overall is the inability to use it on a phone or tablet. Even on a large tablet, it is difficult to navigate unless you have a mouse. I wish there was a better mobile format or an app for it so we could schedule appointments on the go.
Having said all that, I highly recommend theranest and don't anticipate switching to any other service for the foreseeable future. Once you get to know the system, it is very simple and easy to use.

Theranest has been a life saver. It is easy, smooth, and provides all my needs

Pros: The ease of use, credit card services, and great customer care. I have a dietitian and therapy practice, and via using custom forms, I can run both practices through this software.

Cons: Honestly this is a great product, I can not think of anything that I do not like. I love also that they are constantly improving, and looking add more features

Overall: Ability to use credit card services, provide quick receipts with codes to clients, keep good notes on who has paid, and who owes money, good documentation, and and thorough reports.

Overall: Hello, I am a licensed professional counselor in private practice. I have used Theranest for 3 years now and plan on using this application in the future. It is very affordable and user- friendly. My favorite feature of Theranest of the customer support. Every time I have a problem or a question, all I have to do is send a quick note from the icon at the bottom of the screen and someone gets back to me asap.

Pros: The many features that it gives the provider. Of course billing is easy and tracking revenue.

Cons: When you first begin using it, it may can be a bit confusing but once you practice you get used to it. Another con is that you can not transfer information from your old software.

Overall: Theranest is the best practice management system ever. I have used two prior practice management systems and none compare to theranest. Theranest provides you with billing that prints statements, reconciles billing and even emails statements to your clients. It also provides you with a nice graph that keeps you up to date on how much money you have outstanding and how much you have collected. The best feature of all are the notes! Love the Wiley notes and treatment plans. It saves me so much time when I am doing patient notes. The Wiley notes is an extra cost but is so worth it. I can do my notes in half the time. It creates goals, objectives, everything you need to capture patient data. You must try this product, I am so glad I did. Once last shout out is that there customer support is awesome! They pop up on my screen asking if I need assistance and send friendly emails. The price is amazing for the service.!

Recommendations to other buyers: Just a good product. The transition can be difficult but once you learn how to use it, it's a great product.

Pros: How it easy and everything is basically self explanatory. Have used numerous programs by far my favorite.

Cons: I wish it would alert when a text recieve. It would only change the appt if client only press 1 or 2 but if they respond with a message form, no alert is receive. Also a breakdown when doing a report by the insurance company.

Comments: I have had very good experience from the start of using the software. From the initial GotoMeeting set up meeting, continual customer support to date, and to use of the software. My staff, who does all the bookings and billings for me, also finds the software easy to use.

Pros: The program is easy to use and keeps everything organized. I am able to upload documents and save them to the client's file for future reference.

Pros: minimal glitches, strong links between scheduling and billing aspects. Well built for larger practices.

Cons: No way (that I'm aware of) to bill multiple credit card transactions at the same time.

Overall: We started using TheraNest 6-9 months ago and it has been a very positive change for our group practice. We wanted a software that didn't require us to use the clinical notes, so we only use it for scheduling and billing clients. Our practice has 9 people and things get complex, and TheraNest has helped make things more manageable for all of us. There is no QuickBill feature, however, so each credit card transaction must be done individually. The customer support has been excellent, and their team is continually working to improve the software. Highly recommended!

Comments: Customer service provides answers that do not address the problem presented. They do not make an effort to understand the problem before providing their "answer." Secondary claims submission is a nightmare on this system. There is no way to search by claim number, making claim numbers completely useless and everything must be done by hand. The system has many "bugs," that they do not attempt to fix, for example, notes are not showing up in the queue to be approved. When we chat this to customer service, they give us an answer that has nothing to do with the problem. Re-submissions to Medicaid must all be done by hand using paper claims because Theranest does not have a way to indicate to the insurance provider that it is a re-submission and not a duplicate claim. There is no way to pull up necessary reports. There are reports that can be pulled, but none that have been helpful to us.

That being said, there are some positive qualities of the system. The note formatting is nice, the autosave feature is nice. The "cases," system works well once you get used to it. The direct submission to the clearinghouse is nice, except that you then need to make sure that claims are going through the clearinghouse because Office Ally likes to hold claims even though the insurance company says that the claim should go through. One of the customer rep seems to know what he's talking about and does make attempts to understand the problem even though his answers once he does understand the problem are usually just that the software cannot solve it and he will tell the team about the request. I like the idea of the Chat support button, and if customer service took the time to try to understand the issue being presented, it would be a nice feature and not so frustrating and time consuming to use.

Pros: I love that they are always striving to make the software the best it can be. Innovative and user friendly, Theranest is a fantastic tool for my practice. I love the customer support and the assistance they have provided me when necessary. I have felt as if their goals have been to make my life easier.

Cons: Nothing is perfect, what I would like to see would be more individual customization. I have made a few suggestions from time to time and I know that cant do it all, I do understand that they hear me out and respond accordingly.

Overall: Theranest gets me more time with my CTs and then time with my family at the end of the day. Both are priceless. It is also great not to be bound to paper files. YES!

Comments: I am asking my assistant, Marvie, to complete one of these as well, as she is the primary user. A couple of points :
1- can it be set so as not to have to re-login after periods of non-use? or at least set the time for that?
2. I would like the ability to use different colored fonts, underlining, bold in the Contact Log,
3. would like the ability to just click on the appt time and get right to the preferred record keeping mode- in my case that would be the "contact note" - i prefer that one because it is the simplest / cleanest template..
3- I d like to be able to leave the heading off the contact note, or at least put it at the end -- this part: "Date:02/15/2016 05:22 PM. Created by:Dr. Dan Griffin, Licensed Clinical Psychologist. " - so you get the first line of the note in the screen when looking at several notes before you open one.
4.- is / could it be possible to customize contact notes so it maintains a template

Pros: 1) Clean interface and ease of use. TheraNest is exceptionally easy to learn, which works well for a training facility where therapists are coming and going every semester. 2) Excellent customer service. TheraNest's support team is available by phone or by a link through the TheraNest webpage. They usually get back to me within an hour for any questions I have.

Cons: The feature we've wanted most from TheraNest (which they don't yet have) is the ability to have clients electronically "sign" documents using their finger/stylus on an iPad. Currently, we have to print forms requiring client signatures (informed consent, release of information, etc.), have clients sign the paper copy, scan the copy back in, and drop it into one of the pre-set clinical document tabs in TheraNest. The other point on our "wish list" is ease of transferring information out to Excel or SPSS for research. Currently, this can only be done with demographic information.

Recommendations to other buyers: We run a couple and family therapy center with 10-20 practicing clinicians and 80-100 clients at any given time. We've appreciated how easy TheraNest is to learn and use.

Comments: I was literally so sad when I figured out how clunky and impractical this software is. So very sad. I had high hopes. Took a long time to move everything over, paid ahead for a YEAR, advised another therapist to go too, all for naught.

Pros: It is truly beautiful. It is downright gorgeous to look at. It walks down the catwalk with the grace of a gazelle.

Cons: The billing absolutely worse. The ERA's are a joke. Because even though you get ERA's, TheraNest can't do anything with them! YOU, as the provider, have to go in manually, and adjust everything so your numbers can be processed through the system! It is archaic and insane. It adds hours to your workload and I fail to see the point. The one thing this software should do is billing and automatic ERA operations. Even the most basic of billing softwares out there can do this. It was so disappointing. Also the calendar feature is frustrating. Of course we all have basic hours of operation, but what about the occasional exception and crisis client? Yeah, that's seriously a two page set of clicks back and forth. Like I said, the supermodel: it looks beautiful and seems so graceful at first, but ultimately that's all it can do. It is incapable of doing anything else but looking gorgeous.

Comments: TheraNest in my opinion is better for smaller practices that don't see hundreds of clients a week. Used this software at a smaller mental health treatment center and it was sufficient and a cheaper option compared to other platforms.

Pros: Mobile friendly! Very helpful for the therapists who can't access a computer between appointments. Covers the essential basics for a psychiatric practice.

Cons: A bit labor intensive to keep up to date with. Hard to train people to use - not the most user friendly. Very easy to accidentally delete important information.

Pros: I like that the tracker area makes it easy to see all of your appointment by provider/patient. It makes it easy to follow up with insurance, track start dates, and even look back to get an idea of personal progress (sometimes its hard to remember how long ago an event was discussed, but theranest makes that easy).

Cons: The latest update has made the web site booker very sensitive on mobile devices (it is hard to progress one week forward, and I will often skip ahead unexpectedly.

Overall: All history of appointments are kept in one place with details of each present. Score!

Overall: After reviewing my options I decided to go with TheraNest. Best decision we made...now if we could do the same with other things...sigh. Great value for money and by far THE best customer service of ANY biz I work with. Quill could take a lesson from these guys!

Pros: I like that the software is comprehensive, and means that there is not a need for hard copies.

Cons: I find that a lot of the software is not intuitive, and requires a person with experience with theranest to explain this to me. I am training to be a therapist and not an IT person, and I do wish the software was a bit more intuitive, especially around scheduling.

Overall: I am new to theranest, and I'm experiencing quite a learning curve. I understand how to enter in new clients, how to do session notes, and I can click on the tabs to write more detailed notes, etc as needed. I have not consistently gotten the calendar feature to work in a way that I understand, though, and this has been frustrating to me.

Recommendations to other buyers: If a theranest employee/representative ever contacted me, I could explain the difficulties I am having. Again, I wish it didn't take a person to have to show me how to use the software.

Comments: I have a very small practice and was looking for a PMS that would help me manage the paperwork without costing a lot of money. TheraNest has fit that bill nicely, is easy to learn and use, and has helped me keep track of my work. Initially I had very accessible and available customer support that walked me through various aspects of my learning. Lately, however, I have had more difficulty accessing the interactive online support. At times the icon doesn't appear on my page. TheraNest is always improving and responding to suggestions that are made, and has many help articles that are clear and easy to follow. I have only been using TheraNest for a few months, and there are features I have not yet explored. I have not used the client portal, their clearinghouses, or their voice or text reminders. My clients appreciate the email reminders that are free. I would recommend TheraNest to other clinicians. The main reason for the 4 stars on overall quality is the frustration I have had with customer support access.

Pros: Customer service, that is does appointment reminders by text.

Cons: Mobile apps are not up to par

Overall: I have been using this software now for 9 months. Overall I am pleased. Customer service is excellent. Seems comparably priced to other software companys. The mobile applications on an iPhone and iPad are my only complaints, needs improvement. They seem to be making changes all the time trying to improve. Recently added a client payment option in the portal, excellent feature. I use this as a sole proprietor so I cannot attest how it works for multiple therapist. I would recommend TherNest to others.

Pros: This is the Most cost effective option I have found to manage a small private practice. The client portal is a wonderful tool to communicate with clients.

Pros: Very little down time.

Cons: Form development, note format and initial assessment needs more information

Overall: The progress note format is all wrong for insurance purposes. It needs to have a SOAP or BIRP format. The forms should be easier to develop. Multiple checkbox are needed and ease of developing drop down menus are critical.

Recommendations to other buyers: Developers custom notes doesn't work well if you can't link the note to the appointment schedule

Overall: TheraNest is a pretty good EMR for the money - it is user friendly and parts of it that give you problems, well, the service is par-none - there are a few quirks to it but once you get it ironed out, it should serve you well

Pros: User friendly

Cons: Status of appointments automatically goes to "kept" when appointment time passes and user have to go in to change it, if client does not come to appointment

Overall: Everytime I have a question, it is always answered in a timely manner. Do not have to wait days for a response. Awesome!

Comments: Theranest helps me immensely in my private practice. It makes billing so much easier than before. I can submit claims to insurance and send Superbills to clients with just a few clicks. Having the credit card system has also made billing and payment much easier and more convenient.

It also helps me in my intake process. Now clients can complete all of my paperwork prior to their first appointment, rather than have to spend time at the intake session. And by doing the intakes through Theranest, it populates their client chart, making it easier for me to have all of their info in the system, and not worrying about typing it again.

Theranest has saved me so much time and made my practice more efficient. Also, the customer service/support is excellent. During normal business hours they are almost always available live -- by phone and online chat. I tried other software programs for therapists and this is far superior to what others offered in terms of support. When I first got the program, one of their tech experts called me and went through, step-by-step, the process of setting everything up to submit claims to insurance. The interface is also intuitive as compared to the other programs I tried. I have been really happy with Theranest. And also my clients really love the email reminders about their appointments.

Pros: After my learning curve I like it a lot.

Cons: I do not like the bill for clients. I would like it to show insurance payment, write off, and co-payment by client as separate payments.

Overall: I had been with the same billing company for 16 years. Learning this system was a challenge for me. I appreciate the online support.

Pros: This software is easy too use once you get to really know the software. I am still struggling with some aspects of this software, but what I am finding out is that the more that one uses this software the more easy it is to use. I feel that this software now that I find myself really getting use to using it, is extremely valuable especially when it comes to seeing a lot of clients/patients on a regular basis. I basically by history as a therapist am not used to writing anything in front of my patients/clients unless it has to do with gathering information on a first visit in connection with an evaluation; otherwise, I love to devote as much eye contact with the individuals that I am serving as possible. The Theranest Software is now taking me to newer and higher ground as far as therapy is concerned and I am truly very grateful for this.

Cons: I find it sometimes difficult to write and complete progress notes for my clients so that the notes can be signed after each session, but I am presently getting more and more comfortable with this.

Pros: It is very simple and intuitive. We appreciate the level of depth with ease of navigation. Training and support are excellent. The support staff works hard to help, explain and provide guidance when needed.

Cons: Does not link to Quickbooks. We really need to be capable of integrating with accounting.
It is very difficult to have all of our sales, payment details, AR and billing separate from our accounting software. Client Portal is still in need of improvement

Pros: User friendly, monthly reports help me stay in touch with my business profitability, love the Wiley Treatment planner add-on because it makes completing my treatment plans a cinch!

Cons: Not many cons. I would like to get the method of copayment printed on my Superbills. But in their defense, I have not requested that fix yet.

Overall: Excellent, easy to use product with intuitive features. I recently switched from Therapy Notes and am very happy with the change.

Pros: It is easy to use and filing bills is seamless with insurance companies. It checks for common errors before sending which saves time and money.

Cons: When billing clients there is no ¿tracking¿ so I know when and/or if I billed them already. I¿m going to start a paper log but it would be so much easier if it could be automatically notated within theranest.

I am delighted with this program. I find it easier to use than others. It "makes sense" to me.

Pros: I appreciate how the program provides written instruction, video clips and the option of direct messaging with a staff person to help you understand a particular aspect of the program. This format is immensely helpful in learning the many facets of managing the entire spectrum of clinical and administrative tasks that the software provides.
Additionally, this program efficiently links the clinical with the administrative in a seamless fashion. Nice!

Cons: So far, I don't have a comment about this. I am in the process of connecting with Availity RCM to proceed to using the billing component. So, hopefully that will give me a fuller experience of the scope of the software capability.

Pros: The support staff has been SO tremendously helpful to me. I'm a solo-practitioner figuring this all out on my own and it wasn't a smooth transition from my old system to this one. I have asked her SO many questions and she has been so patient and responsive. This is absolutely the best feature of your software - - - the software itself is great - - but it's like you get your own "office manager" support along with it which is SO helpful if you're on your own

Cons: It's taken me a while to figure out some billing kinks....a handful of my first submitted claims were rejected and took a lot of extra leg work on my end

Pros: Phone app was good but only lets you see by client or day. Unable to do much from it. This section is making me wrote more so - Pretty colors?

Cons: It is primitive and unnecessarily complicated at times. It is always DAYS until you hear back from a representative when you have a problem or question. The answer is "we are hiring people" but that is really not my issue nor what I am paying for. I will most likely not be renewing with Theranest.

Overall: Not what I hoped.

Pros: The customer service, ease of billing, reports, scheduling...it's all really great. I've used other software and Theranest is far superior, the most cost effective and user friendly. Another great bonus is that you can grow at your own pace.

Cons: It was difficult to figure out how to do billing with Office Ally and Medicaid, but once it was figured out, it's been really great, easy and time saving!

Pros: Lots of great features, new ones all the time without big bumps in cost.

But the best part of TheraNest is the customer service. Not only are they fast but they answer all of my dumb questions as if they aren't, they walk me through the things I screw up with patience. They also offer lots of tutorials if one would only use them. And when I say 'one' I mean me!

Cons: At one time there was no way to see that an email reminder had been sent to clients. Sometimes clients say they didn't get one and I can't confirm it. Now that I have text reminders going though I can see that.

Overall: Organization, time management, no missed notes.

Pros: It is almost a one stop shop for all of my counseling needs. It streamlines billing with clients and insurance. I don't need a separate way to charge credit cards. I don't need to keep a ton of paper files on hand and I can do my notes or bookkeeping anywhere I have a computer.

Cons: They don't have a video system yet. They have some trainings but I haven't been able to find them unless I act like I am researching the software.

Overall: Saved time and frustration

TheraNest has elevated the quality of our office procedures.

Pros: I like the scheduling support and the ease of accessibility from any device anywhere that TN provides.

Cons: I wish the billing statements were a better quality. They do not print well and they look plain. One client misunderstood the verbiage and under paid the balance amount due.

Pros: We like having an all-inclusive system where we can schedule (and syncs with Google Calendar), take client notes, handle all of the paperwork (with no paper), collaborate via secure chat, process payments, automatically have the funds deposited in the bank, run reports, and have an app that gives each of us access to our caseload.

Cons: We have had a few glitches along the way, but it's probably due to user error. We would like to see some more robust reporting that allows us to run customized spreadsheets. Customer service is great, but it has usually been a few hours before we get a response.

Overall: Streamlines all of the things we need in an EHR

Pros: I love 90% of the software: intakes, batch superbills, and many of the other features.

Moreover, I think the world of every person I was in contact with this company - so kind and responsive. Grade A++

Cons:
Here is why I will not buy this product...

1. Mandatory confirmation of self scheduled clients. I read a neg review about this and when I took the webinar I realized that this is a terrible feature that causes the therapist massive chronic inconvenience. My current online scheduler allows patients to schedule and then I see their name pop up on my calendar - super easy. With your system I need to confirm up to 40 appts every week for the rest of my career. Grade F --

2. No Group Therapy system. The calendar will not allow multiple clients to sign up for one group. Deal Breaker. Grade F --

Pros: I have enjoyed the ability to connect insurance billing with my clearinghouse which has made submitting and organizing claims much easier and less time consuming. It is also great to be able to track client's attendance. I have found TheraNest's technical support to be very engaging, knowledgeable, and helpful.

Overall: TheraNest has been a very helpful tool in facilitating the organization of my private practice. It has made starting a private practice much easier as all of my client's information including insurance information, progress notes, assessments, and scanned documents are all in one secure place that I can access from any computer where I have a secure internet connection. I have already recommended TheraNest to friends/colleagues and will continue to do so.

Comments: 1. I would like to be able to switch between screens i.e.: client information and then toggle back to a note, (Or between an assessment and a note) without having to completely get out of one before I select another and then select the first to get back to it again.

2. It would be nice for clients to be able to log into the client portal for filling out forms only. This would alleviate me having to tell them that "although you'll receive instructions on how to schedule your sessions, we do not use this feature, so bypass this in the future."

3. When clients fill out their intake forms through the client portal, It would be helpful if the the client's information periodically saved automatically and was available if they want to get in later to add or change before submitting in the portal.

4 .When clients attend groups and individual sessions, It would be helpful if therapists could set a "default" button so that you didn't have to enter through generic notes, select individual, select notes again .... and repeat this 3-step process every time you want to see a client's individual notes.

5. It would be great if the system included a feature that could print a weekly report of all clients who attended sessions for that week, with dates, CPT codes and dx.

6. It would be nice if the printout for assessments would allow for paragraphs, bullets, etc. rather than straight text that runs together within each box.

Comments: Our team did over 25 demos (not kidding! My brain was numb) for various online EHR software. And, TheraNest exceeded our expectations. So, hence the 5 stars across the board.

Comments: I have been using TheraNest for about 6 months. I am disappointed with the billing function which is the main reason I am using the software. I switched from Theraquick, which in my mind was the perfect software for my needs, but unfortunately, is no longer supported and will not be compatible with DSM-5 and the new billing forms.

Theranest is behind on development of some features that I find essential to managing my practice, most specifically having separate client and insurance balances for each client. Also, it is missing being able to allocate insurance checks amongst multiple clients' insurance accounts. Currently, I bill the insurance for my full amount and then wait for the insurance to pay and then bill the client the copay. There is really no way to do this within theranest so I have had to do an additional spreadsheet to keep track of copay balances owed and then generate my own bills for client copays. I was previously able to do all of this within theraquick. Within theranest there is no way to mark down the amount owed after insurance pays a portion without writing it all off. I am told this is under development, but unfortunately I'm having a lot of trouble tracking my money owed without it.

Comments: I am a private practitioner and small business owner. Finding TheraNest has helped streamline the process of scheduling, record keeping, and billing by putting it all in one place, and at a very affordable price. I love that once you enter the client and what type of appointment it is into your calendar, this will easily transfer over to the client's monthly invoice and insurance billing forms, while I barely have to type in anything--the system does the heavy lifting. So easy! When I ran into problems early on with the billing side of things, their customer service team easily helped me problem-solve and fix the issue quickly without delay. I get paid quickly and regularly by insurance companies now, and very much appreciate not having to hire an outside billing service. TheraNest is very affordable compared to other services. I highly recommend TheraNest to all my professional colleagues, and in fact, a few have switched over to this service from the other systems they were using because of how streamlines and connected the process is--eliminating the need for outside record keeping or billing or calendar software. The website will also help you keep all your records safely and electronically all in one place--no flipping through multiple files anymore. As a business woman, I also appreciate the ability to run reports and see how many of my invoices have been paid, what is outstanding, and how much I am having to write off. Can't say enough good things!

Comments: Seriously if I could give them 10 stars on everything I would. I help operate a small nonprofit with approximately 20+ staff members. Up until we started using Theranest in November we were still using paper notes for documentation. The majority of our work is done in the client's home, and we needed to transition to an easy to use software that allowed us to keep our client files organized on the go. I did some research into other electronic note taking systems, and I was honestly shocked at how expensive they were! Theranest is incredibly affordable. They even offer an annual payment that cuts down on your monthly cost. The customer service is AMAZING. You can chat with their representatives during normal work hours, and they will get back with you quickly. I feel as though they are part of our team, and not like I am talking to someone who isn't familiar with Theranest or its functionality. I can't speak to the billing aspect of Theranest - because we do invoices through the state, but so far Theranest has solved A LOT of problems for us regarding documentation. I hope they stay around forever. If you are looking for a software that is affordable and allows for you to make your notes look professional and keep your office running smoothly - give it a try. They even offer a free trial to see if you enjoy it.

Pros: There are such a variety of features on Theranest that it can be adapted for all type of practice or clinician. Customer support is wonderfully helpful.

Cons: There are still some functionality pieces that are getting worked out and updated. Some features are quick "click heavy" but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad.

Comments: I love this product it is very easy to use. I am able to navigate around the system very well and customer service is great. There is so much you receive for the little amount of money you pay.

Pros: I love that there is an app that I'm able to use because essentially I can use this as a dictation for my client notes.

Cons: I would like to see documents provided that are pretty general and are able to customize to your business such as the release of information, intake paperwork, HIPPA and privacy documentations provided.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would say take advantage of the 30 day free trial that way you are able to fall in love with it as well.

Cons: Setting up the electronic billing was a struggle and not communicated clearly what was my responsibility versus what TheraNest would take care of. But once that was resolved, it's great.

Comments: My wife and I needed to update our practice's electronic records. Shopping around, we can to try out TheraNest. We were impressed with the pricing structure and the thirty day "try before you buy" offer. Having worked with the program for the last three months, we are very pleased with the software. For our practice TheraNest is very affordable. The program is very flexible allowing us to use only the features we need. As we have become more familiar with the software, we have added a feature, the last of which is the client reminder. We do our own billing, so that option has not been utilized. The all important technical support has been superb. The FAQ articles are clear and concise. The live support is easily accessed and helpful.

"Cons" for us are few. Initially, we became frustrated with the inconsistent "save data" button feature. Some screens automatically "save" the entered data, but others do not. We reported this inconsistency but have since learned to look for the "save data" button and have largely overcome that deficiency. It would be simpler to this user if all screens were automatically saved.

We have appreciated the construction, the vast number of options, the customer/technical support. I believe our decision to go with TheraNest as our electronic record application has been a wise decision. I would encourage therapists to give the software a try.

Pros: It's pretty easy to use. When I need to schedule appointments, I make a few clicks and I'm done. It also helps me stay organized because the appointment calendar syncs with Google calendar, so I don't have to update teo calendars.

Comments: Theranest has many great features and is mostly user friendly. It falls short on some basic features though. The program does not allow you to refund a patient if needed. You have to contact tech support and send and email with the pertinent information instead of just processing the refund directly. Also, we have patients that see different people in our practice or are using different services, which are at different fees. The program does not allow you to input the fee for the service, instead it is one fee for the person and you need to make sure you catch when they are using a different service or person and adjust the fees. This is a very weak feature of the program and can cause numerous billing issues if the person isn't extremely careful prior to running the charge. I hope these issues and others, that nI don't have time to list are addressed and resolved.

Comments: I originally started using Theranest because I was at a non-profit without a lot of money and we needed something affordable that could work with several clinicians without adding costs per clinician. Theranest had a lot of the things we were looking for, even though there were (and are) some things that I would like to have. The best part about Theranest is, everyone gets a say in what developments are looked into by the company through their feedback voting system. This is where the company really stands out because you can see what is being focused on, and you know that they are continuously making improvements because they roll something new out regularly. You can even see what they have in the pipeline, which I truly appreciate. Besides already having a fantastic feature set, and one of the best price tags around, their customer service has been phenomenal as well. Quick responses, willingness to listen to feedback, and even just the opportunity to chat with someone about an issue with the software, have all been delightful. I recommend this product to every Counselor that asks me for a recommendation, and even some that don't. Keep up the good work Theranest!

Comments: We have had to learn this business from personal experience, experimentation, and re-try. I so wish that I would have found this product years ago. Between providing quality clinical psychotherapy, serving the community with presentations and lectures, meeting professionals inside and outside of my field of practice, consistently working on my social media presence, targeting and finding my so-called "brand", growing in my authentic self, self-care, AND loving being a father to the best kids in the world.... I demand a system that works when it is supposed to and is simple when I engage with it.
THERANEST is pleasurable for me.
I have changed my mindset from paperwork as a burden, to it being a "wellness step" included in the plan for my patients. This product helped me make that shift so it has not been such a vexing and fearful chore. I don't spend energy with things like that in this phase of my life or my practice.
