Pros: There are number of things I liked about this software. I am able to see the schedule in a calendar format and scheduling appointment is only few steps away. The layout format is easy to read and find.

Cons: There are a number of problems with this software. First of all when responding to messages it does not save the receipt memo. There is no way to track accountability. Secondly there are not a lot of options to search patient database; it is only limited to name, don, ssn, etc. Thirdly, it does not allow switching between windows to see multiple things at the same time. One has to exit out of day schedule window to go back to home window. Connecting external peripheral such as an all in one printer scanner is a not easy. It does not allow users to go back and change certain settings.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would recommend clients and practices to invest in a better software system that pushes out updates to improve their system. This way admin staff can be more productive and forgive the shortcomings of the past.

Pros: The product was sufficient for medical office use, with various applications throughout the entire patient visit. However, after using a couple other softwares, I feel there are some functions or extras that Medsym could benefit from.

Cons: One feature that I felt could use improvement was the schedule format. I didn't like the way the schedule looked. If you compare with say, eClinicalWorks, I felt eCW's schedule looked nicer and was much easier to customize and view.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure to try all functions of the software. Make sure they work for what you want for your practice, and are beneficial for day to day use. Your software should make you more efficient!

Pros: We have two locations, so using the messaging systems works well and is quick.

Cons: I feel there are some things that could be a little simpler, like a cut and paste when doing scheduling. Also, I would like to be able to have the ability to print a message I send or receive.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure you have a list of all things you need the system to do and have input from all the users and/or departments so that everyone's needs can be met.

My summary experience with this software has been frustrating.

Pros: What I like best about this product is the capability of deleting and recreating the charge lines.

Cons: What I like least about this product is the insurance and patient posting due to the increased amount of steps with no tracking of check and EFT numbers. Posted dates and totals are not automatic.

Recommendations to other buyers: I recommend that this software be thoroughly looked at before a decision can be made.

My expierence with this product hasn't been too pleasing.

Pros: I can't say i like anything about this product and vendor. Since we have had this software, my job and responsibilities have increased in time. Also, it's not to compatible to my work function. It doesn't capture areas that are needed for this office.

Cons: What I like least is posting insurance or patient payments. It doesn't track checks, EFT numbers, totals, and posting dates.

Recommendations to other buyers: Evaluate what specific work and data that your practice needs; even review the smallest task that may seem to be minute. Trust me, this software makes it a huge project.

Pros: I don't really like anything about this system.

Cons: I have been waiting two years for them to fix referral and authorization issues. They are still not fixed. Referrals have to be linked to every office visit in order to pull, and hospital authorizations have to be hand entered on claims.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure all fields work properly. The programmers need to work on the referrals and authorization numbers being linked and properly deducting from numbers.

It's inconvenient and takes too long

Pros: The support staff are usually helpful and are pleasant to deal with.

Cons: People can go into a chart and alter the entries days after the entry is made.

Recommendations to other buyers: Use it on a trial basis for at least a week. Have staff use it and evaluate before purchasing.

Pros: This is our first EMR; therefore, I have no comparison ability. The documentation is certainly faster with an electronic system. The ability to locate and process patient information quickly is a plus. The ease of patient symptom management with access to records is a plus. The onsite customer support with initiation was a positive experience.

Cons: First and most frustrating, there is no way to save a message sent. Whether it be a reply or an initiated conversation, once sent, there is no way to prove that the contact was ever made. Secondly, there is an inability to print a message received. There is no paper trail of messages; hence, proving accountability is nearly impossible. This can lead to human error of messages lost, forgotten, or ignored. Serious issues can fall through the cracks leading to an inferior outcome for the patient. Thirdly, in scheduling, there is no copy and paste option; consider the redundancy of scheduling a treatment which occurs as three weeks on and one week off. Copy and paste of infusion times would speed the process for anyone who schedules and does 15 other jobs to boot. Fourth, while nurses are both motivated and educated to intervene in symptom management, recording symptoms reported, calls received, follow up calls placed, actions taken, these are most often never recorded because there is no real time avenue for such documentation. For example, if a patient reports an adverse event two days after treatment, documentation occurs in the Nurse Notes of the date of treatment (with a time stamp indicating the real date and time). The nurse notes are largely ignored by doctors and nurses alike. Therefore, there is little or evidence that the patient actually received this intervention. There is so little to document and prove what benefit nurses provide in a practice, thus justifying our positions. Fifth, physicians have the capability of changing orders, notes, directions after they have sent them to the person responsible for carrying out the orders. This is an avenue for abuse of the staff, and the licenses they rely on to help them pay their bills. Finally, when a glitch occurs during a typical busy day filled with sick or demanding clientele, physicians who are trying to maximize income, ever shrinking staffing, having a response from a motivated yet completely uninformed person from another country as tech support while reading from a script is not in any way an acceptable solution.

Recommendations to other buyers: Ask questions! Try out real place scenarios (i.e., copy & paste of repetitive appointments, tracking messages sent and received). Unfortunately, the speculation among the staff in our practice is that "you get what you pay for" & a belief that the concern for the dollar was placed far above the concern for an effective system. The inclusion of clinical personnel's opinion in the development and choice of an EMR system could have prevented some simple problems. As previously mentioned, these clinical personnel (aka nurses) are quite motivated in quality outcomes for both patients and the practice alike.

Pros: Absolutely nothing

Cons: There are too many steps for everything you have to do pertaining to accounts receivable.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you need a separate collections area aside from insurance and patient balance, there is none. When proving out end of day, it is literally like looking for a needle in a haystack, having to put in the date for every single invoice instead of the system holding the date. The check doesn't calculate to show once you are finished with an EOB that your check amount matches. The list goes on.

Pros: The software itself is robust and does "cover all the bases." I have also found the support staff to be very knowledgeable and friendly. Although the timeliness of their responses sometimes varies a bit, the quality of their support is consistently very solid, and it is a pleasure dealing with them.

Cons: I have found some meaningful use measures and functions to be a little cumbersome to execute, but part of this is due to my being relatively new to the product and having to meet meaningful use measures right away.

Recommendations to other buyers: MedSym is a complex system dealing with a complex subspecialty: medical oncology. Assuming comprehensive support for ICD-10 in 2014 is implemented in a timely manner, this product will have met our needs clinically and administratively, and I would recommend it be given serious consideration.

Pros: Nothing

Cons: The program feels outdated: not user-friendly with too many clicks and delays, a useless drawing of a body in the middle of the screen that serves no purpose, etc. Their support personnel are unresponsive/understaffed and cannot solve simple problems. This is a (not so) cheap version to meet the new requirements for EMR, but in my opinion, it backfires because it is counter-productive to deal with this program on a daily basis. It logs you off every day for "scheduled maintenance." I can't say enough about how disappointed I was in this system.

Recommendations to other buyers: Go elsewhere. Don't get fooled by price. Remember you will be left without tech support, and stuck with an outdated program.

Comments: We have been a MedSymEMR client for a little over a year. We have used other EMR software services before, but for Hematology Oncology I felt like this was our best fit. It's user friendly, and has a simple interface. Their support staff are friendly - I know them on a first name basis, and they solve your issues right then and there. Great product. I would recommend it to any growing hematology oncology clinic.
