Pros: Easy to use. Clear, concise interface. Pricing is reasonable. They make it really easy to open a 401k account for your team even if you're a super small company. Support has usually answered within 24-48 hours. Phone support is available. Integrates relatively easily with accounting software by mapping accounts and exporting as special files.

Cons: Really, only three minor complaints: I miss their old name, ZenPayroll. Gusto just doesn't explain them like ZenPayroll did. Payroll truly is easy with them. Gusto is literally defined as "the enjoyment or vigor in doing something; zest"¿the direct opposite of Zen. That's a total reversal that doesn't make sense.

Also, deposits into employee accounts show up as Gusto rather than our company.

Finally, accounting integration is dependent on downloading files and then importing. I would really like to see direct integration with the major accounting platforms like Quickbooks and Xero.

I know, I'm nitpicking in both cases, but I had to think of something...

Overall: I would highly recommend them. Their site is so easy to use compared to other payroll companies (especially ADP). The people are nice and the price is great for all the things you get. They're more than just a payroll company.

Pros: It's SIMPLE!!! One of few products/software I unequivocally love! Most every business owner hates doing tedious accounting, payroll and HR work that takes away valuable time from their being able to work on what's most important, their business. Gusto takes care of Federal tax payments, calculations, payroll setup, and a number of other things that are a black hole to me and makes it all feel manageable. If I want to add a new employee, I just click to set up a new employee and Gusto walks you and the employee step by step through everything that needs to be done. And for far cheaper than paying an accounting firm!

I also love their playfulness and marketing. They make using their service truly a pleasure to use at every touchpoint.

Cons: I can't say this about many software that I use, but I have loved absolutely everything about Gusto. I can't say enough about it. Maybe my only complaint is that they don't take care of legal and other stuff I really dislike doing.

Overall: 1- Saves the headache of having no idea where to start with many accounting and HR functions of your business: No business owner actually enjoys worrying about all of those things. Gusto takes many of the functions that are most confusing/frustrating as a business owner and does them for you so you feel confidence that you aren't missing anything and it's done right.

2- Saves time: It automates many of the functions that shouldn't ever be done manually. And because of that I don't have to do as much or I don't have to pay as much for routine services that don't add value to my business.

3- Saves money: As a startup, you feel like you need to figure out a lot of things a normal business would normally just pay for because you can't afford it. Gusto is affordable enough that it's doable for a young company all while doing enough work that it's easy to justify the cost, which many services fail to do.

Pros: I am a bookkeeper, but I hate payroll. Hate it! It's confusing, and there are a lot of regulations, and a lot of paperwork. Gusto's online system makes it more clear than any other system I've seen, and in fact, sometimes I use it to clean up messes that other payroll services have made. I haven't seen any errors yet for my clients, and when I call about something, I've always gotten a good and useful answer. Also handy to include contractor payments for small consulting firms. Employees and contractors like the online access to pay stubs and so on.

Cons: Some things are a little inflexible, due to it being a piece of software rather than a service. So, for example, you can't tell it to add $100 to someone's paycheck once a month for a transportation allowance. Rather, you have to do $50 each paycheck. This works fine if you do payroll monthly or bi-monthly, but if you're on a 2-week system, you end up adding it manually each time. Anyway, just a few issues like that. I think their contractor system is limited and a bit expensive - I would love to add a way to be clearer about invoice numbers and other memo/description issues.

Recommendations to other buyers: When recommending a payroll service, I look at cost-per-employee, size of company, availability of someone relatively knowledgable to manage payroll in the company (or me if that's what the client wants). I think Gusto is great for small companies with just a few employees and a few contractors. I would highly recommend it for household services (babysitters, cleaners, etc) and for consultants. It's not a highly hand-on service (self-serve) so if you need lots of assistance or don't want to bother yourself with payroll maintenance, it might not be for you.

Comments: This is my go-to solution for any client whose payroll we are involved with. We use it ourselves and highly recommend to small businesses. If you go through your accountant there is a discount on the subscription price. The subscription can be paid by the client or the accountant.

Pros: This is a cloud based solution with a subscription price that is less than the big payroll companies. I like that you can have employees "onboard" themselves by filling in their personal information and bank information for direct deposit. This increases accuracy and preserves the employee security. I also like that the business HAS to have the payroll tax payments withdrawn with the payroll submission thus enforcing compliance. Gusto does all the Payroll Tax Return fillings, you can log in and get them. There is no need to print or deliver paychecks, which saves money and time - employees can get their stubs and W-2 by download. It integrates with your accounting software for automated recording, another time saver that increases accuracy. Support is excellent, and they deal with any notices resulting from transactions on their watch. If payroll is the same each time you can set to autopay!

Cons: Some of my clients would like Gusto to submit garnishments or retirement payments, but that is not something they do.

Awesome payroll support for small businesses.

Pros: Gusto is a perfect and easy to use payroll portal both for employer & employees. It has a self on boarding system, for employers to send new hires their offer letter and paper work through its portal. Employees can easily update their address, direct deposit info, withholding all in one place. Previous month¿s pay stubs can also be accessed easily. Employees can easily load W2 directly into turbo tax through its website. One can also keep track on the taxes paid. Gusto also offers detailed description and helpful tips of required information to be inputted. Its editing process is also very simple & straightforward when any changes need to be made to employee info or business features.

Cons: Gusto seems overwhelmed and unprepared for the renewal period. Also there is no invoice function, so contractors cannot submit an invoice and have their managers approve it. A separate system for contractors for invoicing needs to be maintained. Also Direct Deposit should be little faster. Customer service is also not that good.

Pros: We love using Gusto for not only our payroll but they also manage all of our benefits. Gusto managing our benefits has been such a life saver! I don't have to think about being in compliance anymore I know that they are keeping everything up to date. I get reminders when it's time to run payroll, when new employees need to sign up for benefits and when we need to renew our benefits.

Cons: Gusto has wonderful customer support the only downside for me is that when you call in you are always talking to a new person, sometimes that can make it a little challenging to efficiently get the answer or help I'm looking for, but they will help until the job is done!

Overall: Gusto saves me so much time and worry. I know that our benefits are managed correctly and that we are always in compliance. I also know that everything on the payroll side is taken care of and if there is an issue or mistake the super amazing customer support team is ready to help!

Pros: Support. They see every issue through as if you're the most important or the only client. They're thorough and they tolerate you if you're on a learning curve (we're an Australian business setting up our US operations and health etc benefits is a new and unnatural thing for a business to grapple with). The software is flawless and usability is perfect. We run our payroll in a few clicks, and that's because we don't choose autopilot. Used to run benefits thru Zenefits who made a lot of errors, and zenpayroll stepped in without hesitation or complaint and ran every correction. It's complete, not half cooked. It's how software and support should be done.

Cons: We are a global business, and things are done differently in other countries for payroll. For instance, we don't need to go thru the pain and inefficiently of supporting benefits in other countries. Plus there is different legislation and tax setups etc. I wish zenpayroll was configured to support payroll in other countries so companies like ours growing elsewhere could benefit from One-payroll without considering the bigger and clunkier vendors. If you're growing, most likely you're growing globally or planning to. Otherwise it's perfect.

Recommendations to other buyers: You pay for what you get. Free options, even ones with reputations for fast(est) growth, give you poor service and make a lot of errors costing you time and money, and a lot of embarrassment with employees. Zenpayroll on the other hand (although still affordable, not free) will hold your hand thru setup, support you thru every tax question and submission, streamline everything electronically and answer your calls and emails swiftly. Look for genuine, don't be fooled by promises of the marketplace.

Pros: First of all I believe Gusto is more user friendly than any type of Quickbooks related software program. This program will literally keep your payroll organized and on point It actually gives me the exact amount of payroll that I owe every other week which helps me stay on track and eases up some of my frustrations crunching numbers and physically doing it myself. It literally does everything for you once you have the specific information entered, especially filing and organizing your payroll

Cons: It is priced a little bit more than similar programs but that is ok because I know for a fact with everything you ever buy that you will always get what you pay for. You want to be cheap, you get cheap software that you have to replace or winds up being junk, you want to spend a little extra your not paying out the butt later on new software.

Overall: Awesome software for keeping your payroll on point and it also allows employees, contractors etc etc to look at all their past payroll history any time they want. You can handle all kinds of situations with this software including notifications with money deposits, or if you need to turn in a time off notice you could do it through this software,

Pros: I am obsessed with this product and the support staff that comes with it! I have tried Intuit and ADP before finding Gusto. Gusto was a total game changer for me. The software is easy to use and really makes payroll a breeze for those of us who have businesses to run! You can upload a CSV file with that week's hours and any other payments and BOOM- payroll is done. I also like that they give me the exact amount I owe each week for that payroll- no monthly or quarterly surprises to budget for. And I have opted to roll in my workers comp payments as well. SO EASY. They also offer AMAZING onboarding options that mean every time I hire, I only enter a new employee's email address and they do the rest. I then verify that things look ok against their ID, e-sign the i9 and it's back to business for me. Everything looks modern, fresh and fun- and that makes my company look polished and put together! I literally do not know how we managed while using the other companies. We love Gusto!!!!

Cons: It might be a tiny bit more expensive than some of the other guys, but those dollars are completely worth the time saving and error avoiding features included in Gusto. And their customer service far exceeds the other companies as well.

Overall: This software has made payroll and hiring such a breeze! I used to dread new hire processing- but with Gusto the new hire do all of the work! And the interface makes it totally easy for them. =)

Pros: Their pricing is not only competitive, but scales linearly with the size of your organization - beating many other services handily price-wise for smaller companies, especially if you run bi-weekly or weekly payrolls. The ability to pay Gusto by month rather than by the payroll gives me flexibility in paying our employees more frequently without added cost. To top it all off, their customer service reflects their aim of taking on their relatively enormous competitors - they have an incredible support team.

Cons: They don't show net pay until after you hit submit. It makes grossing up bonuses a pain, but that's ultimately not a big deal. Plus, for how few times I've had to do it, it remains a possibility that they've got this functionality now and I'm just not aware of it. The area for viewing prior payrolls also bothers me, as I'd prefer something less flashy and more strictly functional (don't gate viewing prior payrolls by making me click to scroll the list down, Gusto, it's aesthetically pleasing but functionally it's an unnecessary hassle).

Recommendations to other buyers: Take price into account. Some companies won't share their price upfront, typically because they can't compete on price. Contrast that with Gusto, where you pay monthly, they're upfront about their costs, and you're almost always paying less than other payroll services which charge by individual payroll. There's a reason other payroll services gate their pricing behind a lead funnel. They want you to trust that becuase they're larger, they'll be better, and disrupt your straightforward research in the name of personalizing your "quote" (hint: it's all for show). Bigger being better isn't always the case, and you shouldn't trust that it's the case without doing your research and evaluating your needs against the services offered. For a small business, Gusto pretty much beats the competition handily. I've recommended it to friends using other services to save money and simplify admin for their small businesses, and they've all enjoyed it so far.

There's a reason why they call it ZenPayroll!

Comments: After trying out the Big Guys is payroll I was lucky enough to stumble upon Zen. Sign up was easy and implementing it into our business was a breeze. Everything can be done online so it saved a number of hours getting important data into the system. They also have an amazing contractor portal where independent professionals, temp staff and other workers can see their whole payroll history. My favorite part about ZenPayroll (other than the incredibly great support) is that they handle all of the filing for you. Working with the EDD can be a paperwork nightmare and ZenPayroll takes all the pain out of it. I love getting our quarterly filing notices that say "No action is required from you at this time." It's like having a dedicated person to handle all of that boring, yet necessary and legal paperwork of hiring, taxes and payments, who always knows what to do and when. I truly believe no one does payroll for small business better than ZenPayroll.

Pros: Quick. Easy. Efficient. Completely cloud based. All the filing and heavy lifting done for you. Great user interface and paying employees and contractors is super easy. I also really like the price. You get everything for one flat rate, and you only pay for the employees that you have and the contractors you pay for that month.

Cons: I can't say that I have "cons" with ZenPayroll, but a neat feature would be to add custom check printing. Currently if you have quickbooks they have it setup, but it would be neat if you could order checks from ZenPayroll to run through your company printer that were formatted just the way you needed them. We have our own template that works now, but if they had their own checks that would be better. I would also add multiple pay rates for employees (like regular rate vs training rate) but I believe this might be somewhere on their roadmap.

Pros: As an employee, it's been such a revelation using Gusto. It's so easy to get so many HR-related things done (check pay stubs, change tax exemption status, see benefits, etc.) in a friendly, well-designed solution that it's mind-boggling that some of the older, entrenched HR solutions have been getting away with such a painful UX for so long.

It's one of those companies where they really seem to lean into their brand promise in every little interaction... even when I emailed them to ask a question about COBRA coverage, they responded sooner than expected with a friendly, personalized, helpful response. It felt like I was talking to someone who represented the company and genuinely cared about my experience with them. (Unlike, say, an outsourced call center person.)

Cons: I don't know what Gusto costs relative to the competition, so I don't know what the ROI will be for you, but frankly I haven't run into any frustrations with Gusto, yet. It's been nothing but pleasant surprises.

Overall: I wish the HR solutions at my previous companies had been as helpful as Gusto has been. So many other providers create such needless headaches when looking for the most basic employment (pay, benefits, insurance, 401k, etc.) information. Gusto's been a revelation.

Pros: The reviews before buying and GUI. Initial folks I spoke to before company shut off all phones were nice and helpful.

Cons: Random lack of service and closing of entire company during normal hours.

Overall: While the software GUI is nice and they've done a great job leveraging web for 5 star reviews, I regret signing up as my young employees are not receiving their pay before the holiday due to what I learned is a Gusto cross sales training event which closed the entire Gusto payroll service down before Labor Day. There was no notice on their site, no emails to customers giving notice, or anything. Starting around 1:30pm I called Gusto to finish set-up for our payroll so we could run it. I needed to upload a doc which requires notary for the Gusto set-up to be completed, per Gusto site, and there was no upload feature. I also had questions as I could not set-up payroll for employees in different states and run as separate payrolls as their set-up procedure locks the site down until all info as been completed for all employees in all states, regardless if different payroll periods. Anyway, I started calling Gusto sales support, payroll support, every number I could find, both 415 and many toll-frees. The sales support team number hit a voicemail that references them being out until the 23rd (today is the 29th), and every other number reached their after hours message stating to call back during normal business hours. I checked the Gusto website, and it states they are open until 5pm PT. It was 1pm PT. I sent emails and left voicemails, and no reply. Chat was disabled as supposedly after hours. In short, no consideration of their clients. Hope the pizza and ping pong was good!

Pros: This product is very user friendly. It allows you to manage various types of employees in various locations with easy. I could easily manage salaried and hourly employees and it allows hourly employees to enter their own hours. It also allowed employees to set-up their profiles, which saved time on my part in the back-end. Instead of copying a lot of personal information and making constant W-4 updates, the software allows employees to set themselves up with information they know well and make changes that streamline during the payroll process.

Cons: Sometimes it felt like certain tasks were taking more clicks than necessary to complete. For instance, if I need to change the pay rate for several employees I would go into each one individually, but then once I saved and was ready to update the next profile I would have to go back to the employee screen and then expand the scroll-able list again. It would be nice to easily go back to where I was when making large updates.

Recommendations to other buyers: This is great if you're smaller or newer to the payroll/HR process. The Gusto help team is amazing and are very quick to answer questions, and answer them accurately. The cost savings is wonderful too. You basically pay based on the number of employees you have per month. If you have seasonal operations, this could save you greatly during your off-season months. And when employees are not working they can be temporarily turned off without losing any information with they work for you again the following year.

Very easy-to-use, simple software that does everything I really need it to.

Comments: Like I said, I'm not sure what changed, but when we first started with Gusto (mid-2017), the response rate on emails were fantastic. Now, the only time I can get a response via email is if I submit a question and end up calling multiple days later. By the time my email is responded to, I typically have the answer from some other source or from a phone call. Good software with the potential to be great.

Pros: --Very easy to use overall --The dashboard is nice, especially with the notifications --Love the intertwined tax forms --Ability to customize reports --Number of different reports you can run --For the most part, support is very knowledgeable

Cons: The only con I really have is that Gusto used to be so good about responding to email and questions submitted online in a timely manner. Now, I feel like to get anyone to respond, I have to call which isn't a bad thing, but most of the time the person on the other end can't help me directly. They typically have to pass me off or get back to me via email which is what I would like to happen from the get-go.

Pros: I like Gusto because it links to another service I use for time cards, it's trustworthy and my team can upload their own direct deposit info, pull their w-2 and change their w-4 as needed helping me to avoid the need to be full HR while trying to run a business. It sends you several reminders to run payroll before the deadline so you can meet your team's timing expectations. They file documents for you with the State and Fed government as well.

Cons: The software requires a pull of the payroll funds from your business account for 5 days in advance for contractors and for full-time employees as well - at least until you build up some "credit-worthiness" then it goes down to 2 days in advance. Also I wish there was a way to set up a calendar notice of when to have payroll approved to download it to your calendar without manually entering it.

Overall: The biggest benefit it gives me as a small business is the ability to not spend time on worrying about payroll, taxes, documentation, etc.

Pros: The Gusto customer-service team is amazing. From the moment you decide you want to implement the system, they are right there to promptly answer all of your questions and assist with the migration of information. For client with multiple states, the cost is more than worth the times it saves me in filing quarterly and year-end payroll tax returns. Employees love it as well as they have one place to go to see their paystubs, W2s, benefits, and PTO online.

Comments: The Good: Relatively simple to use, clean interface. Inexpensive compared to competitors' pricing. Great software if you only need payroll and nothing else, and/or you have fewer than 1 employee.

The Bad: Huge (and potentially legally troublesome) problems arise if you're a more complex organization that synchronizes benefits from another source to this payroll. We've had issues where active employees were automatically terminated in Gusto due to syncing issues from Zenefits and manually rehiring those employees in Gusto didn't fix our payroll issues; Gusto kept auto-terminating those employees after re-hiring them.

After this integration glitch was fixed with cooperation from Zenefits, I thought all was a-okay until the last payroll. The employees who were auto-terminated previously were missing from our payroll list, even though under the "Employees" feature, they were listed among the active employees. Not only did these employees not get their direct deposit, there's no way I can fix it manually in Gusto, so I will have to manually write paychecks first thing Monday morning and do my best to appease our employees.

It is also a huge disadvantage when payroll problems are brought to light on a weekend day--like today--and Gusto has zero customer support on weekends. Moreover, some features, like marking payroll as "write checks" is inconsistently located in the platform; in correction payroll, the "write checks" command is on a page all its own after you've entered payroll info, but in regular payroll, it's a hidden command that you have to turn on by clicking on the icon next to "direct deposit" under each employee's payroll line. I had to cancel regular payroll multiple times when I was trying to find the "write checks" command. It wasn't until I called Gusto that the rep pointed out the "write checks" feature is in a different place in regular payroll.

Amazing payroll software and great customer service!

Pros: We switched to Gusto after using two other payroll companies. There were lots of mistakes made with the old companies that are still being taken care of months and months later. With Gusto the switch was painless even though it was mid-year, and whenever we find we did a mistake or something is not looking right, we reach out to Gusto customer service and it's being resolved immediately. The process to fix an employees W-2 took about 5 minutes with the help of a representative in a chat. The software does EVERYTHING for you, you don't need to calculate, check laws, etc. Previously we had to also use Docusign for on boarding of new team members, not the on-boarding takes a few clicks and then Gusto does everything for you automatically. We saved so much time, energy and nerves with Gusto.

Cons: Once the website was glitchy and I couldn't enter employees PTO. No other cons I can think of. Maybe the customer support was a little slow at some point via email, but if you have something that can't wait they are always reachable by chat or phone.

Pros: The Gusto platform is extremely simple to navigate and understand. It integrates well with the Xero accounting software and provides reports that are clean and easy to understand. Gusto handles my tax filings and keeps me in the loop about what is being filed and what I need to review. Finally, the customer service is superb compared to all other payroll services that I've used in the past.

Cons: I really don't have any complaints about the software. I've been very pleased with my experience.

Overall: Payroll service providers are supposed to make your life as a small business owner easier. Unfortunately, not all of these providers do so. Gusto, however, is a breath of fresh air in this space. Not only is the system easy to use and integrate, the reporting is simple, the tax management is effective, and the customer service is outstanding. I have recommended (and will continue to recommend) Gusto to other small business owners who are looking to simplify their lives with a better payroll service provider.

Pros: Easy to use.

Overall: In December of last year, I found myself taking over payroll for the company that I work for. I quickly learned that our payroll process was very time-consuming and did not run very smooth at all. I suggested that we change our process to the owners of our company and that is when I stumbled across Gusto. I had zero payroll experience and I was spending 1-2 days a week working on payroll. As COO I did not have the time to spend on payroll the way that it was set up. Once we started Gusto and got everything set up it now takes me maybe 30 minutes every two weeks to run payroll. Gusto has excellent customer service and they are very helpful to people like me, who have zero payroll processing experience.

Recommendations to other buyers: I wish there was a way for me to scan in our employee files to Gusto. So that I could go completely paperless as far as HR goes. I have two huge filing cabinets in my office that I would love to get rid of.

I pay all of my contractors every week through Gusto.

Pros: Gusto only charges a base fee for each plan plus for each EMPLOYEE. (Not contractors - presumably because it costs more time to handle things related to employees than it does to handle paperwork for contractors.)

When you create a new account, it walks you through the steps to set up your company's payroll while staying compliant. It's extremely simple to do that, and once it's set up, you can even automate your payroll for those on a salary, or simply manually pay everyone each week as needed.

Cons: For around a year now Gusto has had a date-range for when the money was earned when you set up the payday settings. (Ex. Payday is every Thursday, and that payroll is for work performed in which time frame? Then it lists several past dates instead of letting you choose it.)

Due to the way our providers release funds and take their good sweet time doing it, we pay our people for work performed a bit earlier than their hard-coded date range. There's unfortunately never been a way to set the correct date.

If you're looking to automate your payroll, be sure to contact customer support to make sure you can set the correct work period. I have no idea if that range gets reported to the government or not.

Pros: As a small business owner, accounting wasn't what I wanted to do with my time. I have clients to manage, sales to make and employees to deal with. Gusto was hands down the easiest payroll option I've ever encountered. My accountant could access it, pull the documents he needed, everything was so simple.

Cons: If I had to point out any negatives I would just say that the setup process can be a little overwhelming. There's lots of information, account numbers, documents, etc. Just take it in little steps and you'll be fine. Their onboarding tutorial is a great help.

Overall: I used Gusto for two years and it was fantastic. The only reason I stopped using their service is that the company I was operating was bought out, otherwise, I'd still be right there with them. The customer service is fantastic, they were always right on top of things to help and I didn't have to worry about payroll taxes getting submitted, employees not getting paid, everything was "set it and forget it" easy.

Pros: Cheap...but you get what you pay for. If you have less than 10 employees the price may be worth the headaches.

Cons: Stay away from Gusto. Why? - You and your employees see different PTO balances because the system tracks them differently - You can only have one PTO policy per employee. Moving employees between policies will delete the previous balances. If you do this mass move the system doesn't warn you until it's all gone - You can't mass update anything. Need to make the same change to all employees? Get ready to click away for days! The slowness of the system also makes this a great experience if you love wasting hours. - Customer service is useless and can take a long time to get someone on the phone. Email support takes 24 - 48 hours to respond even the smallest question. Did I mention you should stay away from Gusto? Remember you get what you pay for.

Pros: They take care of a lot of the background tax and filing automatically. Everything is streamlined for minimal time being spent on payroll. Well laid out platform. You are well guided throughout every step in what's needed to be done for your staff and companies payroll needs. They will remind you and advise you when options pop up and let you make the final decision. The best is when you start using Gusto for the first time, you are guided through every step of the procedure. There is a checklist that you can see your progress and completed tasks and whatever else is still outstanding. The friendly, fun comments all over the platform are entertaining and add a nice light-hearted side to the sometimes daunting and dreary task of payroll. All payroll history, pay stubs and tax fillings are easily accessible to view/print online and by each employee too for their individual records.

Cons: Payroll has to be submitted by 4pm if it is to be processed in 2 business days or else it will be postponed to the third day. 4pm is before the close of business at the end of the payroll cycle. If this could be midnight on the close of the payroll cycle, my staff would not have to wait an extra day for their paycheck.

Recommendations to other buyers: Make full use of the customers service. They have instant messenger built into the website if you are ever stuck on a step or are unsure. I have used many times. Response is quick, direct and helpful. Another helpful point was letting all my employees put in their personal banking and tax info themselves which saved me a lot of time of having to acquire and input all that information myself.

Pros: The setup is very easy and convenient. Once it is set-up it automatically pays your payroll taxes and files quarterly reports. Works well for owners, employees, and contractors. It integrates with accounting software's such as Xero and QB, which makes reconciling that much easier. Our company loves Gusto!

Cons: There is not much I don't like about this software. One thing I would change about it is the integration settings. It is easy to send information to the wrong accounts in your accounting software (if it integrates). I highly recommend having someone with accounting knowledge complete your integration settings.

Pros: I get emails straight to my phone every week when my paycheck is deposited, along with fun facts and the option to save or give a portion of my paychecks! I can request time off easily, track my PTO, and even receive approvals and messages from my boss if my time off has been accepted. All of my important work documents are stored in one place online to access within minutes if I need them, and I can edit/change any important tax information in a few clicks. I always know where to get my tax forms during tax season and get email reminders from Gusto when they're ready!

Cons: Honestly, I can't think of any cons. Working for a small startup company without an HR department, Gusto has been an incredible and essential work resource for me!

Pros: Gusto is easy to use and is very active in informing you of changes that you need to be aware of. It seems like they are always making things easier for you by adding new tools and functionalities to make payroll easier. For example, I just saw today that they added an autopilot feature for payroll, which is really going to help me out.

Cons: Interface is easy to use but sometimes I have to ask customer support where to find basic things like the payroll schedule because it's not laid out in a very organized manor. Perhaps it is and I just don't know the website very well. I've been using the website for about 2 years now and I'm not 100% familiar with how it's laid out, I guess that speaks to how intuitive it is to use.

Overall: I get to paid (it's payroll software).

Pros: What I like most about Gusto is that it is so easy to use and doesn't disrupt me from my daily tasks. I am a Director of Customer Success and have been able to run payroll and select benefits for my startup company as a second hat that I wear. The customer support is top notch and I actually enjoy calling in for help because I know that they will solve my problem quickly and that I will learn something new!

Cons: There aren't many drawbacks to the software. Since I am dealing with a part of the business that I don't have my experience in (payroll and benefits), I think some more tooltips or state specific FAQ's would be more beneficial

Overall: The ability to painlessly run payroll and select benefits for a startup without the cost of hiring specifically for that role.

Pros: The thing I hated most about having my own freelance marketing business is managing the taxes. It's so confusing! What do I file? When do I file? Gusto freed up so much of time and energy simply by handling payroll for me. They filed my taxes for me, correctly withheld earnings, created the reports and forms I needed, and even after I decided to close my account when I returned to a 9-5 job, they filed the last few months of forms on my behalf! It was SUCH a delight!

They also handled paying my subcontractors, which was wonderful. The system makes automatic deposits possible and handles all 1099 forms and reports at the end of the year. Great tool, highly recommended!

Cons: Nothing. Gusto is a user-friendly, affordable lifesaver!

Overall: Really really helpful for a solopreneur whose LEAST favorite part of owning a business was handling payroll and taxes. Customer support was amazing. I love Gusto with gusto!

Pros: We have transitioned from ADP to Gusto for one of our subsidiary and couldn't be any happier. Not only it's cost effective than ADP, it's built intuitively for HR professionals. Cons: Because it's not ERP, there are some limitations based on how your business operates.

Pros: They take care of all of the steps of payroll including state and federal taxes which was a great benefit to have as a small business. They also have great customer support - very helpful, friendly and fast response time.

Cons: I wish they had an app that I can use. I also wish there were a bit more new features. I also wish you can mass update everything at once. Like for instance I needed to update one thing to all of my employees and had to manually click into each one. But i guess that's why this is probably better for smaller companies

Overall: I used it to cut employee checks. It also stores their paystubs an work history which makes it very easy to access if needed. It's important for us to keep track of payroll & benefits for our small business.

Pros: Gusto does a great job of putting payroll into an easy to understand and manage little bundle of software. For me, managing multiple client's payrolls, I don't have time to lookup tax rates, to calculate taxes, to make manual tax payments to the specific agencies that require this. Gusto takes care of all of this. They will withhold the taxes, pay the employees with direct deposit, pay the taxes, file the reports, send year-end W-2s, file 1099's. All of what they offer is for a simple, transparent, pricing model. They don't nickle and dime you for each feature. It's a set price so it's easy for you to bill your clients and easy for your clients to have a reliable estimation of what their cost will be too.

Cons: The only con I can think of is that their pricing structure does not scale very well for larger clients. The pricing is good for small to medium businesses.

We can even pay our contractors within the system in just a few seconds. The help feature is great and customer service is already ready to answers questions in just minutes.

Pros: I love how easy it is to use the service. Before using Gusto, I was initially set-up with Quickbooks (all done myself). It was such a pain to make sure that payroll was done on time, that filings and taxes were paid on time, etc. With Gusto, everything is automatic. It's so easy, I love it!

Cons: Customer service isn't as quick as it used to be. It's still great by any measure, compared to other companies (you hear back within 1 day usually), but they used to have an immediate chat and I could get everything resolved immediately. This is to be expected with a growing company and again, comparing to most companies, the customer service is great!

Pros: Payroll is one of those things that can be super confusing and eat up all your time with stuff like compliance documents and government filings. Small business owners don't have the time to deal with all of that. This system is geared for people who value their time and want to get payroll entered, paid and tracked with ease. Integrates with Quckbooks and Xero for simple payroll accounting.

Cons: I used to HATE how they did the Xero integration, but now it's very very simple to reconcile against. A simpler interface with benefits would be nice, but they appears to be folding benefits into their own system as we speak.

Pros: This is by far the easiest, most user friendly program out there. I test drove a few before deciding on Gusto (then Zen) and no other can even compare. It takes me seconds to run payroll or pull a report or form, any questions I have or any documents that I receive from the State are easily submitted to Customer Service and promptly and accurately answered. No run around, no hold times to be passed around among agents. This program does exactly what it intended - take the burden off of me!

Cons: There is nothing not to like about this product. Any features I think of that would be helpful, when I check in Gusto, they are already there.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you try out any other software for even a day, you will be sold on Gusto immediately. I can run payroll from my phone in seconds, access any forms and reports needed for taxes or benefits with 2 clicks. Couldn't be simpler or more effective.

Pros: Every time my paycheck came through I was able to get a full breakdown with a very clean UI. It would also add funny little comments about small things you could buy with the money you earned.

Cons: Maybe a little bit too basic of functionality.

Overall: Very enjoyable. All employees love it.

Pros: I love the fun facts it delivers when checking your payment information. It helps take the mind of off money matters in a weird way since it still has to do with money. Overall, the website is easy to use and navigate. Not once have I gotten lost so the development team has done well in constructing a website that provides optimal functionality and a sleek, but not over-the-top look.

Cons: There is little that I dislike about Gusto. Working in an office though makes me wish the details provided to the employee were done in a more subtle way. If someone walks by my desk while I am checking something they can easily see my personal information.

Overall: This is a great product in terms of tracking employee's paychecks and benefits as well as taking the dullness out of everyday financial tracking for employees.

Pros: Ease of use even for the person afraid of the computer. Customer service is Great, adore the design, ease of using the site, the characters are adorable.

Cons: Setting up was a bit more than expected, considering we have multiple pay rates, not a big deal.

Overall: Great experience! All employee on boarding paperwork is there, the new hires take care of it. Employee access, no more coming to me with changes, they can make the changes themselves. No more papers upon stacks of papers!

Cons: I wish Gusto had a mobile app -- I'm someone who works from my phone a lot and being able to use Gusto through a IOS app would be helpful

Pros: I like Gusto's simple platform, easy to process payroll and never have to worry about filing tax forms and paying withholding taxes. If there is any penalty notice from IRS or state, I only need to scan the notice and send it to Gusto Helpdesk and they will take care of. Hassle free! The cost is reasonable.

Cons: Gusto has certain limitation in departmentalize employee when an employee's time is split between 2 or more departments, they won't be able to split the payroll costs between multiple departments. One employ can only be assigned to one department.

Overall: Never have to worry about deadlines!!

Comments: I started to use Gusto in 2015, I have been fully satisfied since! All the time I would spend taking car of HR task was used to grow my business instead. I also had trouble looking for workers comp insurance and they took care of the whole process for me. The self onboarding is awesome, saves paper and time!

Pros: A very complete platform for payroll, the best function is the self on boarding when hiring a new person. All you need is their name and email address and Gusto does the rest! They also make sure your business is HR compliant.

Cons: I wish they had a time tracker or timesheet option for my employees, however I use a separate app called BOOMR that integrates with Gusto. So it's great!

Recommendations to other buyers: You can do 1 month free trial, DO TRY IT! even if you use another provider for payroll services, believe me you won't regret and will want to switch with them! so much easier!

Pros: I love how clean in the interface is. Onboarding and offboarding employees and contractors is quick and easy, and they have taken care of user experience at every step; for example in the positive tone it users with employee communications. Customer service has a very positive tone too. Lots of high EQ associates. It's the payroll service with heart, and it works beautifully.

Cons: With a couple of tweaks, Gusto would meet all of our HRIS small business needs. I really wish it had a better PTO function.

Overall: Ease of use, good reporting, clean interface, state reporting, automated W2s and 1099s.

Pros: Gusto is so simple to use and leaves the onboarding up to your employees and contractors, which is a huge time-saver and eliminates the worry of entering in any data incorrectly. We have been using Gusto for almost 1.5 years and have never had any issues with processing problems or timely payments - in fact, they have jumped in to help us run payroll in a jam after missing the cut-off time (which is only 2 days within a certain amount of funds.)

Cons: The only real issue we have had is occasional notices from states that we have missed some payroll taxes - but Gusto customer support is extremely quick to respond and able to provide whatever documentation needed to dispute any errors on the state department side.

Pros: Gusto is the complete package for anyone involved in the fields of human resources and payroll.

The user interface is very well done and navigating it is always a smooth experience. Automation tools are available for many features including employee records. No experience is really needed to master this application, and even a non techy person can learn it promptly.

Cons: Dashborading can be a bit better in some ways.

Pros: The UI is seamless. The employees loved using it. It was easy to access payroll information for employees and was easy for employees to login and find their paychecks. The software automatically filed taxes for us each quarter and at the end of the year. Our employees loved getting an email letting them know they got paid.

Cons: The customer service was challenging. If we had any recurring payroll issues, we didn't have a dedicated support person who was familiar with the account. Every time we needed to discuss issues, it was like starting the conversation over again. We had a few issues with payroll processing properly and taxes not being filed correctly due to a change in our FEIN mid-year.

Recommendations to other buyers: I am not sure about their new benefits offerings, but the payroll is good for a smaller companies with straight forward payrolls. Ask about the support end of things and what steps have been taken to ensure it is easier to get a hold of someone and that they are familiar with the issues.

Comments: Not once have I ever received one friendly call from gusto to remind me or update me or adjust my account or anything personal at all they are totally missing this important part of business.

Pros: The idea is good and convenient. It is software that you rent and has a call center with a 10-15 minute wait time. If that's sufficient for You, that's all it is. Software that you rent, not buy, and humans who never get in touch with you not once in two and half years.

Cons: Slow , disempowered support team that doesn't make changes to your account and gives hard NO on certain reasonable questions

Even offers support for syncing with QuickBooks Online. Can't think of much I would add.

Pros: Recently, my boss decided to leave our old, clunky service and switch us over to something better. I can't tell you how happy that made me, because the old service was tough to use, wasn't clear, and it was hard for me to even sign in. (Example, if I cleared my cache, it would first ask me for "company name," and sometimes the company name needed a period at the end to take, and sometimes it didnt)....? Gusto is SO user friendly and the interface is pleasant to look at. I enjoy the fun facts that they throw at me that use my dollar amounts to show me what I could use my money on. I can see everything I need, and change anything SUPER easily.

Cons: My only wish is for my integrations, and, unfortunately, some of the benefits packages that Gusto integrates seamlessly with aren't available in my state.

Cons: I wish I could do my timecard directly through them. Maybe you can and I just haven't set it up yet. Not sure.

Overall: I use Gusto to keep track of payments, PTO, taxes, etc. The user experience is extremely easy to use. I love being able to see where I am at financially at the workplace. It's also nice to have all of my info in one place that I can access whenever I need it. Then I don't have to ask the boss and I'm sure he also enjoys that! Comments: Interface is easy to learn, customer service however is non existent. I used Gusto for about 7 months. It is easy to use, except for the fact that I was coming in from not having used anything and really needed assistance with catching up. They were completely unwilling to provide that kind of support. Then, in July, I had fraud activity in my bank account and my bank advised me to close that account and open a new one. With a ton of automated payments going in and out, I'd completely forgotten to change over the bank information in my account and so when they went to charge me, it didnt go through. 2 weeks went by and they straight closed my account, advised me to not to even bother paying for the missed month and said they would not be able to restart my account until January of the following year. Seriously?? I ended up going over to Patriot Software, where they integrated all of my past activity from Gusto (without a ridiculous charge) and got me caught up on all of my outstanding taxes. Everytime I need assistance, I speak to an actual person and all for about the same cost as Gusto, if not less.

Pros: Aesthetically pleasing interface, automated payroll, easy to set up and understand

Cons: Poor customer service. Only good for those who are starting at the beginning of your fiscal year and have nothing to carry over.

Recommendations to other buyers: Shop around, figure out what you truly need. I have been with Patriot Software now for over a year and love the service they give me. I would highly recommend Patriot over Gusto.

Pros: I could write an essay on all the reasons Gusto has improved our business and my life. No longer do i deal with all the tiring headaches and inefficiencies of old payroll systems. We recently integrated our health benefits in Gusto as well and it's very easy to manage.

Pros: I switched to Gusto from Intuit Payroll and I've saved hours of my time when running payroll. Gusto automatically links with Homebase app for time clock and automatically calculates the gross salary and taxes. The onboarding paperwork for new employees is very efficient and easy to use, making an employee's first day very easy without having to worry about filling out paperwork. I like that you can change an employee's pay ahead of time and set a date for when the new salary starts. The birthday and anniversary reminders are a plus.

Cons: More expensive than my last payroll company, but you get what you pay for. You have to upgrade to get Paid time off automatically calculated for you. If you choose the basic option, you have to calculate the gross pay for that paid holiday, you can't just put in the hours and it calculates.

Pros: Gusto is one of many payroll software applications in the market and while don't have a lot of experience with others, I cannot say enough good stuff about Gusto. Gusto completely integrates with our time tracking and scheduling application, Homebase. This enables us to collect all the hours, breaks, and vacations in one app then easily transfer over to Gusto to run payroll. My favorite part of Gusto is the self-employee onboarding. We set up basics of the account then the employee does the rest. I also love the Gusto manages all the payroll taxes and pays them for us. I don't know where our team would be without Gusto!

Cons: The reporting is extremely broken down and sometimes confusing. I recommend that they create some visual dashboard to better understand how much you are paying every month in wages, taxes, etc.

Pros: Their online platform is very easy to navigate and understand. They have many features that built in that larger companies make you pay extra for. They integrate seamlessly with 3rd party platforms. They remind you when payroll needs to be run early because of upcoming holidays. I could go on for a while.

They let you run weekly payrolls at no extra charge.

Cons: It is hard to contact them by phone because their number isn't readily available on the portal. So if you like speaking in person, you will want to write it down somewhere. This is still a lot better than the large guys who make you sit on hold for an hour.

Pros: The features are fantastic. Quotes of the day, funny personal featurettes, etc... This software has a ton of gimmicky (yes gimmicky) things that make it cool. And all of this is outside of it being a fantastic payroll resource. I have access to check stubs and past payment history and everything I need to figure things out. Plus, changing my tax info is super easy. I love it.

Cons: It is fairly expensive. I have a friend that runs a company that will outsource payroll and HR and insurance details for a cheaper price at better personalization, but It's a bit more complicated. I digress. But Gusto does come at a slightly elevated cost for the great service...which is something that I don't mind paying for.

Overall: Great access to HR and payroll resources and info. It's cool and edgy. Woohoo for that. I love it, and despite its price, I'd still recommend it.

Pros: Easy to use, like that staff have their own login/portal. Automates tax payments, and allows us to handle contractor and w2 payments. Love love love payroll on autopilot, though I wish it could be even better.

Cons: Wish that I could specify a different # of default hours for certain employees (who work 3/4 time, for example), so that payroll on autopilot could be even more useful. Wish that I could modify accepted PTO requests - sometimes folks include a paid holiday in error in their request, or put in a request for hours that they are actually making up elsewhere, so aren't PTO. Once the request is accepted, there is no adjustment possible.

Overall: Efficiency, transparency, good reporting

Pros: SO EASY! SO SMART! SO FRIENDLY! Handles all the Tax Man stuff making my life less hectic and easier to manage.

Cons: If I had to pick at it and make a con it'd be the lack of an app to make approving payroll even faster. Their mobile site works well enough that it isn't a huge deal, but I bet a mobile app would be able to streamline it even further, caching some assets, making it feel faster.

Overall: My life is so much easier with Gusto. I've used ADP, Wave, and a local company to do payroll. Gusto is the least expensive, fastest, and all around best experience.

Pros: Once I got Gusto set up, all I had to do to run payroll was approve worker hours in our timeclock app (WhenIWork - it integrates with Gusto.) Gusto will send friendly reminders about this so it is basically impossible to send out pay late. Employees can change their tax withholdings and view tax documents with their own Gusto login. Gusto even does benefits - at competitive rates. Delightful interface. Superb, prompt customer support.

Cons: It would be great if there were an option to have checks mailed for employees who opt out of direct deposit. Currently, Gusto lets you print checks but doesn't offer check printing and mailing as a service.

Pros: I like its aesthetics. It's very simple and pleasant to interact with, with clarity at each step and without extra options that aren't useful.

Cons: I really wish it were possible to have Google Authenticator give the two-step authentication codes. Right now it requires a cell number for a phone that's physically within the USA, which is a problem when traveling abroad. I also dislike a policy that binds the login for a company to just one person. The result is a choice to either (a) deal with these problems including not being able to reliably run payroll while traveling or (b) have significantly lower security for running payroll.

Recommendations to other buyers: I found it pretty straightforward (as much as one could expect) to switch from Wells Fargo's Business Payroll Services to ZenPayroll. ZenPayroll really helped with that process. At the time I didn't realize that it would have been a lot easier to do immediately after the start of a quarter (so early January, early April, early July, or early October). In particular, I think the start of the year would have been the simplest. It took a few hours (a bit over half a workday, though I work at a startup so "workday" might be different hours than one might think).

Comments: I recently switched from SurePayroll to Gusto to save money, as I am a one person company. I must say that I am having buyer's remorse. In the same of simplicity these guys have created a very inflexible system. I ran into the following issues as soon as I did my first payroll.

1. If you don't do your payroll in time, direct deposit would occur the next month. The only way to fix that is to issue checks to employees. In SurePayroll I could adjust the pay date to any date I wanted as long as it was within the threshold of direct deposit requirements.

2. The QuickBook integration does not create GL entries. I compared the IIF files from SurePayroll and Gusto. There are only subtle differences, which they can fix in a breeze. But, so far the answer has been, sorry for the inconvenience.

3. NJ has so many tax lines on W2. I had to club some of them into one category while entering prior pay-checks.

4. You can get hold of someone to chat or on phone to answer questions, but do not rely on emails. I doubt that they read the emails. Unfortunately they work only on pacific timezone, and only on week days, so good luck if you need them out of this window.

The bottom line is that Gusto would do the job for a fair price, but a lot is desired from the product they are currently offering.

Pros: Awesome software for payroll and managing benefits. Keeps you organized and very user friendly. Love that you get reminders when it is close to pay day so you don't miss any dates.

Cons: A little pricey compared to other software but we believe it is worth the cost. This software is just what we were looking for.

Pros: Easy to use and to access all of my payroll information. It is painless to look back at past paychecks/hours and to ensure everything is accurate. This transparency makes me trust Gusto. As well, W-2's at the end of the year were easy to obtain.

Cons: There are truthfully no downsides I have experienced from this product as a user. It does everything I would expect it to do!

Overall: I have used Gusto in the past to manage time from my employer. Paychecks were always accurate and on time!

Pros: I like the user friendly layout of the site. It's easy to understand my paystub and easy to request off time off and see what time I have remaining. I also like that I can easily see past pay and request off information.

Cons: I need to play with it a bit more, but I'd like for it to automatically bring me to my employee profile, rather than my old contractor profile. When I started with my company, I was a contractor, but am now a full-time employee and thus I have a different profile for that.

Overall: I love the user-friendly site and ability to easily view and understand my paystubs and time off. I also like that I can see previous information and I can access my profile from when I was a contract worker.

Pros: I really liked the interface and how easy it was to use as a user. We used Gusto for about a year and it was always easy to navigate

Cons: As our company grew, Gusto didn't scale very well and then when we branched out internationally, we had to make the switch to a different platform because of the limitations.

Pros: A lot of payroll processing platforms are old, difficult to use, and not intuitive. With Gusto, the onboarding process for new staff is easy and never causes questions or problems with the onboarding process. Additionally, processing payroll is easy enough that any level of management can do it quickly and accurately.

Cons: I wish they interfaced with more point of sale or time-clock software. We have to manually enter hours, which is really easy, but it would be nice if it was all imported.

Pros: Compared to any other payroll software that I've used, this one beats them all! It's user friendly, it's clean, organized, manageable, and a one stop shop for ALL things payroll/HR. I love Gusto!

Cons: There's honestly nothing I can really think of that I dislike about the product.

Overall: I have quite a bit of experience using Gusto since I manage this software for many of my clients-- it's always integrated perfectly into the accounting softwares we use, it's reliable, it's neat/organized, and their support team is always available. I really love this software.

Pros: It's very easy to get started with Gusto. Just sign up, enter some details on your company and payroll schedule(s) and then add your employees. The employee onboarding process and great and can save a payroll department countless number of hours.

Cons: I work with churches and while Gusto has a ton of great features. There is some EOY manual work for W-2s for ministers that I wish was more automated. There is also not an advance time off process (multi-point approvals) built into Gusto. Not a huge deal, but would be nice.

Overall: Its seems to be one of the up and coming payroll solutions. There is no upfront cost, and it extremely easy to process payroll! This software can save any payroll department time, whether you have 3 employees or 300.

Pros: Why can't payroll be enjoyable and fun? Gusto makes receiving your paycheck even MORE amazing - it throws in fun facts about what you could spend your money on (like how many times you could circle the earth with the gas money you could buy...LOL), and it allows employers to write special notes on your paychecks, too.

It's overall a beautiful software, easy to use and navigate, and it holds all of the important documents that I would need for paystubs, timeoff, taxes, etc. in one place.

Cons: As a user of Gusto, I really have no complaints!
