Pros Gusto integrates easily with other systems we use, which saves time and reduces manual work. The employee app is very convenient—our team finds it simple to access pay stubs, tax documents, and personal information right from their phones. It’s also very affordable compared to many other payroll services, especially for small to mid-sized businesses, and offers good value for what you get. Cons One major frustration is that when an employee is rehired, Gusto does not reset their settings. This can cause confusion and extra manual cleanup. We’ve also had ongoing issues with city tax handling, which has required additional monitoring to make sure everything is correct. We are a small nonprofit with only a handful of paid employees, but they work from home in multiple states and Gusto made that all simple to setup and manage. Pros Gusto is straightforward and easy to set up, provides simple-to-use tools for running payroll, and is one of the least expensive solutions available to small businesses. Cons It was tricky to get Gusto fully integrated with our preferred timekeeping system. Additionally, user roles and permissions cannot be customized, so you must choose from a small set of pre-configured roles - but these were sufficient for our use. I also expect 24/7 human tech support when dealing with payroll for companies that have all sorts of hours of operation. We are restaurants and are operating non-stop in many ways. Pros Much better interface than Quickbooks. Attempts to integrate a hiring module that does present an easy, online application form. Cons 1\. Gusto missed one of our paydays. Gusto withdrew the funds, and deposits did not arrive on the following day as promised. You can imagine the impact on our 45 employees and their level of trust in our company. Hours of corresponding with their support team both by chat and phone left no resolution. Gusto does not have a human support network for after 7pm CST. 2. User interface is clunky. They still have the "25 records" is the total records listed at the bottom of the page and you have to choose 50, or 100 every single time you want to see a whole list. 3. You cannot assign employees to multiple departments within the same location. 4. Alerts come up on the home screen and you cannot easily make them go away. 5. The hiring module does not have a way of managing one applicant who has applied for multiple jobs. The system sees it all as separate applicant records. I've used Gusto in it's earlier stages when it offered an incentive for getting your paycheck deposited and allowed you to borrow before your next paycheck. With customer support experience, customer service could use some improvement. Pros What I like most about Gusto is how easy and simple it is to use! I actually have not had a bad experience with Gusto while using their platform. I like that it has it's own money account and it is separated from the rest of the other features. The app is very accessible and you do not get lost navigating it. Tax information and employment information can easily be found as well. Cons There are constant times where the app is down and it states that gusto is working to fix it. There has been times where it has been hours for you to be able to access your money and you cannot call to unlock your card with the customer service number. They direct you to use the site. Even when you want to dispute charges. When it comes to disputes, Gusto is the least helpful in that department. It doesn't seem like they actually investigate when your card is stolen. October 15, 2025 4.0 Overall, it was fine when we were a small sized company. As we got closer to 50+ is when the problems began. Benefits were always having issues with file feeds and Gusto did some backend pay adjustments without informing us first, which caused problems. But like i said, under 50, it's a good solution. Pros I liked the platform look, its very friendly and modern looking. It's a one stop shop for employees in a small sized company. I liked that it had company matching options as well. I also liked the ease with getting states setup for tax purposes. Cons I don't like the customer service, it's an email and it can takes an extended amount of time to get any issues resolved. I also didn't like that you couldn't do any mass uploads. They're still sending us emails even though we cut services over 3 years ago. However the banking features are limited such as only having one external account, no bill pay, no Zelle. Pros Very easy to split payments and make changes. Availability of various background and tax documents is also very good, easy to find. Cons Being limited to one external bank account for transfers is a negative compared to other checkign accounts. After I get my pay in multiple accounts, I consolidate them in one account for credit card payments. This makes it hard as I need to go to those accounts, transfer from them to another and that to Gusto etc. Also they advertised they offered free tax prep with April, but after I prepared my tax return I saw that this only applied if you had taxes back, not taxes due, which wasn't stated clearly in the offer. " October 14, 2025 5.0 Gusto made it easy to clock in and out for my shifts, and it was nice to be able to track both my hours and pay for that pay period. It also was smooth and easy to view previous pay period information, as well as tax information at the end of the year. I actually was also able to log in and pull tax information from previous years long after I had left that employer. I think Gusto is a great software to use coming from the side of an employee and would highly recommend! Pros I used Gusto as an employee at a previous employer and it was great!
