### "Terrible customer service, average system, Predatory Lender"

September 11, 2019

1.0

The world has caught up to Gusto. It is just a run of the mill self-service payroll firm. Comparing any self-service firm to a full-service firm, the self-service firm will win on cost, though that is about it. In addition to losing on Customer Service, the constant annoying sales pitches and calls regarding HR benefits as well as the firm charging for simple improvements, such as adding paid-for time tracking is a severe detriment. The fact that it has now morphed into a Payday Lend is the last straw for me. I do not trust Gusto with my firm's or employee's data and am extremely happy that I never moved any healthcare or other benefit systems to their control. I have been with the firm since our beginning, but will be moving on to another system as soon as possible.

Pros

This is one of the many common low-cost self-service payroll solutions. It allows you to pay your Employees and Contractors and handles virtually all of the taxes and processing of payments to the taxing authorities. The interface is on par with the many other UX/UI's in the industry. As is industry standard, Employees are emailed all end of year documents automatically. The company also offers access to two-day payroll processing.

Cons

Customer Service is terrible - an absolute nightmare. When mistakes are made by Gusto, they are hard, if not impossible to fix and/or get them to admit to. The firm has attempted (and mostly failed to my knowledge) to enter the higher margin HR platform and benefits fold. The firm has also just begun predatory lending at rates advertised as 1% which are actually as high as 45.63% (per their own fine print). The Customer Service in this area (from my limited exposure) provides misleading at best and false at worst information. This used to be a great firm, but there was an initial turning point where it began to focus more on marketing than the system, which then led to the constant sales calls for HR and other insurance services, which has led now, to Payday Lending. There had been an Intuit integration issue that seems to have finally been solved. Additionally, the firm has the same problem with missed payments and 941 misfilings that other full-service platforms have, however the customer service is severely lacking and resolutions take forever. The platform also can not handle an employee working in two states (more common in the North East). The cost for paying contractors is too high which limits the usefulness of the system overall - forcing a company to keep Employee Payroll, Contractor Payments, and expense reimbursements on separate systems. I have also received tax filings from another firm as their own CSR system combined two threads and had to speak to the a

### "Very happy with Gusto. Makes payroll simple and understandable for small biz. "

February 24, 2022

5.0

My overall experience has been great and i would highly recommend Gusto. Additional features will only make it better.

Pros

Payroll runs seamlessly. Very happy with pyroll, reporting.

Cons

I would say these are not cons, but things i would like to see. I would like to see the onboarding process integrate with a background check company and a drug screening company. That would be really nice. I would also like to be able to genreate a handbook or a summary of benefits. Often times when hiring, i want a snapshot of what is happenign in gusto (vacation policy, holiday policy, benefits options). this would help me when hring.

### "Repeat Gusto Customer"

February 17, 2022

5.0

Peace of mind for accurate and timely payments to employees and contractors. I also appreciate the ease of access and reporting of all of this information from a historical perspective.

Pros

This software is intuitive to set up and use for all payroll purposes. They deliver excellent customer service and pursue feedback on the delivery of that service. The product is continually updated to take care of changing and increasing needs - in beta phases until it really works! Over all it is a solid product that supports most needs in the payroll portion of the accounting department.

Cons

Customer service accessibility - while the service they deliver is exceptional, getting through to this service can be cumbersome and timely.

### "Cannot enter data to meet filing deadline in 4 days, Software lacking, and IRS says not receiving"

January 27, 2020

1.0

For light weight use, it is pleasant. For anything cookie cutter, can be severely lacking. I do not have experience with Quicken payroll so not sure if any better given Quickbooks also seems to soft serve accounting now and buries T-accounts and registers, which should be at the top. That being said, at least one can still get to the register and make entries when soft serve ice cream is not appropriate, if you get my meaning.

Pros

It's pretty, modern GUI, and marketing and PR are nice. Lots of VC cash spent on social media and GUI to promote it. Phone support folks are pleasant but limited in what they can help with.

Cons

If problem, then your fault as they say software is designed to be self-serving and thus everything is your fault if does not work. But, if you want to grant restricted stock to people and generate 1099s and edited W-2s , then sorry, there software and support team could not help and there are no fields for me to "self-service" this data into their software. I've been in contact with Gusto since December and trying to get some 1099s and W-2s created and that are due by Jan. 31st. I finally spoke with someone today who said I could email them directions on where and how to enter into W-2s and 1099s, but I was then told that if a person's name was not in their software by Dec. 31st then software cannot create forms, even though there is time to still file. At the same time, I am receiving notices from IRS that 941s were not received, but Gusto software states filed.

Reason for choosing Gusto

Lots of smart VC dollars and 5 star reviews by sites. However, if you know how Silicon Valley works, then you know that these companies are well funded (and interconnected in terms of players and $$$) with lots of amazing, smart, young people being hired in mass and working hard, but at the same time there is an ecosystem of PR/social media self-serving reviews and pretty GUIs which biases reviews. I really want to like them as I like to root for small companies with smart young people, but I am sitting here having to create and file 1099s and edited W-2s by hand as well as communicate with IRS about missing 941s.

### "Worst customer service!"

February 15, 2024

3.0

Pros

The system is easy to use, but it is super problematic.

Cons

Firstly, the customer service aspect has been less than satisfactory. On multiple occasions, responses to inquiries and issues were delayed or lacked the depth and clarity needed to resolve concerns efficiently. It's crucial for a service provider in such a critical domain as payroll and HR to offer prompt and effective support to its customers. Unfortunately, this has not always been the case, leaving our team in challenging positions during time-sensitive periods. Another significant issue encountered was the unexpected cancellation of payroll processes without prior notice. Not only has this caused confusion but also operational delays, affecting the morale of our workforce due to the unpredictability of their compensation. We've been met with no information, no solution. There have been instances where former employees were not promptly removed from our benefits plan for months even after being notified, leading to unnecessary complications and financial discrepancies. This oversight underscores a need for a more rigorous system or checks to ensure that employee status changes are accurately and timely reflected across all service aspects provided by Gusto.

### "Payroll Made Easy"

August 4, 2022

5.0

The time we have saved using Gusto has been extraordinary. What took us hours in the past now takes very little time. We have saved money by switching to Gusto who offers reasonable service charges. Not having to write checks and the additional bookkeeping that would go into uncashed and misplaced checks is another big savings. Our entire company loves direct deposit and we are very happy with the services Gusto has provided.

Pros

Gusto has many great and useful features. I love that I can run payroll, hire a new employee, change wage information or dismiss an employee, from anywhere I am by logging into my account on my phone or on a computer. Gusto sends reminder emails when it's time to run payroll or a new hire has not completed their onboarding. Tax information is clear and concise. My staff enjoy having their own individual accounts to change bank information, look at their documents and get other helpful information. Direct deposit is a fantastic time saver for both the company and the employees.

Cons

Integration with Gusto was very easy. Occasionally it is difficult to reach a live person for help but we have rarely had to speak to someone.

### "Gusto: Best Software For Your Payroll Woes"

July 13, 2022

4.0

I am using Gusto to manage the payroll of our small business. It has been a great help to us in filing and calculating taxes, onboarding employees, managing database, and benefits administration.

Pros

Gusto is a great software with a of features and a very user friendly interface. We use Gusto daily for employee onboarding, managing payroll, calculating and filing taxes.

Cons

Gusto is a very likeable software in my opinion. I haven’t came across a single issue while onboarding employees or running payroll. Although Gusto can work upon its report aspect as it can be a hassle for a newbie.

### "Best payroll company out there"

March 4, 2021

5.0

Hands down the best and most cost-effective payroll bureau I have ever had the pleasure to do business with. I will not only recommend it to clients that don't have a payroll service but I will recommend it over any other payroll service there is essentially. It's way cheaper and way easier to use. I also have seen less mistakes then pay checks or ADP as I have worked with their payroll reports quite often when doing bookkeeping

Pros

We used to do around payroll through a company called pay soft.. or ProPay maybe another name for it. The program was decent a little bit cumbersome and the check stock was extremely expensive. They did their own payroll as a bureau. As a result of having their own proprietary software built they also sold it which was overpriced and in the long run didn't make us money. Just being a recommendation agency essentially and controlling if you ever clients payroll through gusto it's made us more money and they offer way more than ADP or paychecks ever has offered us.

Cons

There's not much I don't like about this software besides maybe the fact that it isn't really a software that you download it's an internet interface so if you're internet somehow becomes unreachable or it's down you can't really print out checks with proper taxes withheld. This is An occurrence few and far between and can always be advanced and then paid back once you can access it again. A desktop GUI that just calls in the website would be a handy tool for owners and accountants to be able to take more effort into their own hands on payroll

Switched from

[PaySoft Payroll](https://www.capterra.com/p/193397/PaySoft-Payroll/)

Paysoft payroll or ProPay would be its software that I used was inferior. They would not even give you the update to make w-2s unless you resubscribed for the year. Their check stock would cost about $500 for a box. It is absolutely insane what they charge people. I understand that they are their own payroll bureau but if they are going to offer their software out for accounting firms then they shouldn't financially rape their customers which they do and I'm sure they'll continue. This is also why they will never be a name that anyone knows

### "Vimlan Tax Services LLC"

October 18, 2021

4.0

Overall, 7 out of 10, could be better. It's better than most, but it needs to be better.

Pros

\-It's web based -one login for staff for access to all clients. -MFA ability for each login -ability to control which clietns assigned to which login. - like other payroll engines, it does automatic paymetns (immediately) and automatic filings - multiple reports available, quarterly/monthly/yearly, etc. - tracks PTO, SIck, and auto generates if needed, - great integration with Tsheets for time clock

Cons

There is no ONE consolidated report for all clients on a custom period. EG, if I wanted a 1st quarter payroll report, with selected clients on each row of the report, and the columns having the headings for say, different data points like "gross payroll, net pay, 401K deferred, 401K roth, IL state tax paid, 941 done?" then that style of report is ONLY available if you pull that report down client by client, NOT for all clients or selected clients as a consolidated report. Email alerts are not there for specific things, like if a client exceeds a payrol amount or if a large net reimbursement check is done. There is NO mobile app. There is NO standard custom 401K year end "Annual census" report which ties in all the data points for a 5500 filing. Gusto also competes with providers for health insurance and 401K. Financial advisors like me only want Gusto to do the payroll part, not compete with us on the benefits part.

Reason for choosing Gusto

The ability of one login for us as accountants/payroll processors, and to have the dashboard where we have access to all of our clients without the need for multiple logins. The ability to parse out clients for different logins is also key. The security this software offers is better than most. Just need email alerts and the consolidated reports which spans all clients in one report is what's needed, along with a mobile app.

### "Gusto is the Besto! "

July 27, 2021

Their customer service is excellent and the staff is very well versed in payroll issues. Their easy-to-use platform and on-boarding process make it one of my favorite payroll processing companies!

Pros

Gusto has a wonderful onboarding platform that takes a lot of the work off the plate of the accountant (or business owner) and puts that work onto the new hire. In addition, I recommend Gusto to all my QB's online clients because their integration for the data entry is seamless! They also have $100 per client referral bonuses and while I don't make nearly as much money as my branded payroll on the referrals it's still a great platform for my smaller clients that can't afford my platform.

Cons

The reports they provide are not very robust but I haven't run into a situation where I've needed something they didn't have a report for...yet!

### "Gusto is a great cost-effective HR tool"

August 3, 2023

4.0

Staff is friendly and helpful, and they respond quickly to emails (in less than an hour, on average). The website is well-organized and simple to use. We switched from Intuit Payroll because it made paying state taxes to the appropriate agencies a snap.

Pros

Overall, it's a nice piece of ux design. The reality is that the criterion for usability for most goods in this space is simply that they work. With enough enthusiasm, most tasks become not only feasible but also simple. It's as simple as a few natural mouse clicks.

Cons

When I try to build a report that fits my exact specifications, I'm often forced to generate more data than necessary just to get to the data I want. It would be more convenient if you provided a part where I could pick and choose the data points that would go into my report.

### "As feature-rich employees as employers"

May 31, 2021

5.0

Using Gusto takes no extra time out of your day than the bare minimum needed to track and submit hours for payment. The interface's intuitive workflow means I am in and out of the site in minutes, and onto other things. Which is exactly what you want!

Pros

I am a freelancer/part-time employee using this software and I find it incredibly intuitive once you're all set up. The interface has clear logic-flow and entering hours every day/week is simple (which is what you want—this is not an area where you want it easy to make errors!). The analytics software is also great for those getting paid—you can see exactly how much has been withheld for taxes, you can update your forms right in the platform rather than emailing and going back-and-forth with bosses—it's a breeze to use!

Cons

I found onboarding and getting set up for a small client project—my very first time using Gusto—was confusing. The project did not allow the type of detailed time tracking as my current project and the slim back-end offerings left me feeling like I was missing something important. Turns out, I wasn't! That onboarding confusing lasted hours and I had to confirm with my client that I had set everything up correctly!

### "Changing my review after disastrous series of events with Gusto"

April 13, 2021

2.0

Great... until it wasn't.

Pros

Very clean design, easy to understand your account from your dashboard.

Cons

After several years as a Gusto client (and a previous 5 star reviewer), I'm posting this second review regarding my experience. Gusto is great ... until it's not. When we refinanced our house, we discovered that Gusto had been incorrectly reporting on our W2's. This created a series of several complications that took several weeks and persistent calls to fix. Perhaps some of the liability falls with me, but when I tried to make corrections, it was extremely difficult, slow, and frustrating. I expected some level of expertise in correct filing of tax forms. Gusto entry level workers did not seem to have the experience to understand the complexities of 5013 organizations. The trouble continued. If you've ever experienced the bureaucratic run around of pressing through multiple layers of hierarchy to actually get someone who knows what they're talking about and has the authority to make changes - yeah, that's what I experienced. The problems continued into this year - anytime I had a problem, it consistently took waaaaaay to much time to get a response from someone who could actually fix my problem. Ultimately, I decided after several years to cancel my relationship with Gusto. If you have a company or non-profit where you know tax laws, Gusto will be great for you. If you're looking for a payroll company that provides excellent, timely customer service and a level of counsel/guidance regarding tax and payroll laws to protect you, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Reason for choosing Gusto

After several years, I ended my relationship with Gusto.

### "I’d recommend Gusto with, ugh, GUSTO!"

June 17, 2021

Wonderful! As a small business, if we didn't have something thats so easy to use, that manages tax and reporting, and manages benefits and workers comp. insurance, we'd be drowning in admin every day.

Pros

Gusto is very easy to use. It links seamlessly with T-sheets (Intuit Time) so our staff clock in and out and we monitor this on that app, and then at payroll time just click a button and its done!

Cons

Not many, to be honest. If i could be nitpicky, it doesn't in and of itself seem to have an inbuilt clock in and out timekeeping function, at least not as good as T-sheets, so we have to run two sets of softeare.

### "Good software not great."

October 22, 2021

5.0

Although some issues are frustrating the software works better than QuickBooks payroll. The cost also offsets some of the issues.

Pros

Most functions are easy to use. Some are more difficult and although they may offer some features, they can be difficult to find.

Cons

Customer support. I think when you pay for software you should have a phone number you can reach out to for technical support. I personally do not like paying for a service where I have to send a message and wait for a call back. This makes it more difficult when you are processing something time sensitive, such as payroll, and have to stop what you are doing only to hope you have time to go back to it when they finally call you. Employees have also complained about customer service regarding their accounts.

### "Simplifies everything- highly recommended for small business "

July 3, 2022

5.0

Gusto was a life saver for our small business. It removed our need to hire dedicated HR in house at a time that we did not have resources to do so and allowed me, as the operations lead, to ensure payroll, onboarding, etc was completed accurately and timely. I'm no longer at an organization that uses Gusto and I miss it. ADP is probably still a better fit for larger teams, but its UI is much clunkier and the support less friendly and helpful. My experience using Gusto as the primary administrator for a small team (during Covid-19, no less) was second to none and I'd recommend the platform at any opportunity.

Pros

Onboarding employees and contractors is incredibly intuitive and simple through Gusto. Along with extending a position offer, I'd submit basic information about the new hire to Gusto and they would take care of collecting their direct deposit info and getting W4s, I9s, and other onboarding documents completed. Payroll processing was a breeze through the system, allowing quick approvals of hours for non FTE and summary totals of total payroll and total benefits before running. You can't miss payroll without trying, either- there are timely reminders of when approvals are due, including when payroll dates were off the regular schedule because of holidays, etc. During tax time, Gusto generated W2s and 1099s that we could review quickly and send out. Gusto especially shined during Covid-19 when SBA loans were being issued. They created a feature that would walk you, the business owner, through the process and help you apply for loan forgiveness with all backing data. Finally, customer service and access to information is a top feature. As someone without an HR background and on a small team, our Gusto rep became my go-to source.

Cons

I was extremely happy with Gusto and didn't experience any pain points.

### "Gusto has worked well for our law office"

November 29, 2022

5.0

I considered several different options for payroll/HR management before settling on Gusto. I was a bit hesitant to choose Gusto, due to it being a bit more expensive than other options. However, the product has worked very well. It provides excellent value for the price paid.

Pros

Benefits to using Gusto:- Ease of use, both for employer and employees.- Employees can clock in and clock out using an app on their smartphone. My employees comment on how much they like this compared to other time tracking systems they have used as past employers.- I was able to easily connect my CPA in with Gusto so he can monitor tax and accounting items.- Gusto automates the employee onboarding process, making the whole process a lot easier than it would otherwise be.- Bottom line: the product works well, is intuitive to use, and is efficient.

Cons

Gusto's ability to work seamlessly with 401k contributions is limited. I have to manually send our financial advisor the 401k contribution information for employee elective deferrals. Not the end of the world and certainly not a deal-killer, but it is a mild inconvenience.

### "The Opposite of Operational Excellence"

September 28, 2020

2.0

Poor

Pros

Nothing. The entire experience was overshadowed by poor customer service.

Cons

That the people behind it demonstrate what I have found to be not uncommon among BaY area startups. Startup CEOs like myself go to Gusto because helathcare is a challenge for a small business, a new business. It is something that is importnat to do right by employees, and to attract quality talent. The whole point is to make things easier than they otherwise would be. Here's the issue - gusto thinks it's all about the app. It isn't. For a startup CEO, it's all about leaning on a business which claims to know all the ins and outs of the HR element of running a business. This is a crucial part of a business, any business , but the nature of a startup is such that startup founders, CEOs, and senior leaders must entrust this to organizatons such as Gusto to focus on making the business a success. Unfortunately, Gusto divides up the numerous elements of its offering - worst of all, healthcare benefits - and has no organizational role to be the "quarterback," a single point of contact. That is there in the sales process, but not in the post sales experience, and that in and of itself is the mark of a business that doesn't understand customer service. I now use a different service because I was tired of the lack of organization in this regard, and the implication that by expecting more, I was being unreasonable. All roads seem to lead to the app at Gusto. An app alone can only provide so much value before it must be accompanied by dedicated, thoughtful customer service.

### "A GO for Gusto!!!"

February 25, 2023

4.0

Overall Gusto is a wonderful product that allows a secure and cohesive method of paying your employees. It also is a great product for employees to use. It is simplistic and effective. You can't go wrong with going with GUSTO!!!

Pros

I like the simplicity and the ease of using the product, I like the colorful images that break down the different categories as well as the real time updates of your funds.

Cons

I do not like the consistency of how often you are logged out of the software as well as the amount of times that the software is down for maintenance or updates.
