September 10, 2026 5.0 My overall experience with Gusto has been extremely positive. It's a robust system at a low cost. They have great guides and their staff is very knowledgeable and helpful for any questions you may have. It's a great resource for smaller organizations! Pros Gusto is a great resource for HR and employee management needs. The cost is extremely low, especially compared to alternative options, making it much more cost effective for nonprofits looking for resources for small business management. It is easy to use and customize for your own organization's specific needs, even for novice computer users. The customer support has been extremely helpful, and they're always willing to look into any bugs or issues you may experience. Cons Gusto has built up quite a bit since I first started using it, so many of the things that were "wishes" for the software have been worked out or added. I think the only thing I would suggest is allowing another type of user for payroll processing without admin authority. The ability to upload updates to policies and procedures and have them signed on off has taken the leg work out of making changes. Pros The ability to easily upload documents for employees to sign. The ability to easily approve and deny paid time off requests. To ability to manage employee hours & pay, has helped streamline and manage many aspects for our small business. Cons I am not a fan of the inability to submit time off requests if hours are not in the bank. It also handles your W2 and 1099s. Although the basic package is affordable you can run into higher costs for essential addons such as time tracking. Pros The feature I like most about Gusto is that it will allow you to run payroll as often as needed without extra charges for standard processing and it allows new hires to enter their own information regarding direct deposit and deductions which is time saving for administrative. Pros Gusto integrates easily with other systems we use, which saves time and reduces manual work. The employee app is very convenient—our team finds it simple to access pay stubs, tax documents, and personal information right from their phones. It’s also very affordable compared to many other payroll services, especially for small to mid-sized businesses, and offers good value for what you get. Cons One major frustration is that when an employee is rehired, Gusto does not reset their settings. This can cause confusion and extra manual cleanup. We’ve also had ongoing issues with city tax handling, which has required additional monitoring to make sure everything is correct. Another small but annoying usability issue is that when you tab to the next employee, it doesn’t stay in the same section you were working in—you have to keep navigating back to where you were, which slows things down. Paychecks arrive when they’re supposed to, which is the bare minimum but still worth praising. Early direct deposit. While I love the trotting pig, it feels like a bit of a wheel-of-doom and I find myself needing to close out and re-open the app. The other issue I have is with the time-off feature. It doesn't always load, so you need to close + reopen, and then when submitting the time it can revert from "PTO" to "Sick Leave" without you noticing until it's been submitted. For international staff, there's some limitations on countries you can enroll. Pros Cheap option for paying US-based contractors and employees. Their customer support is also great. Every time I request support, someone is available online or over the phone to talk to, which is a feature that most other similar providers lack. Cons The user interface could be challenging. There is definitely a learning stage for new users who have never used similar platforms before. In my experience, I've used several platforms similar to Gusto, and I believe their payroll function needs improvement. There are limitations on reporting fuctions that needs some customization. The food itself is usually enjoyable, and the quality of the ingredients is often better than expected. However, the service isn’t always reliable. When ingredients are missing or unusable, you’re still left needing to visit the supermarket to complete meals you’ve already paid for, which defeats much of the convenience that meal kits are supposed to provide. Customer service does make an effort to put things right, but compensation in the form of future credit means you still end up spending additional money to solve this week’s problem. It’s a reasonable service, but there are better alternatives available. Pros The recipes are generally tasty and easy to follow, and the ingredients are usually of a good quality. Compared with some meal kit providers, Gusto doesn’t seem to cut corners on ingredients, and the variety of meals available each week is decent. The service is straightforward to use, and meal planning becomes much easier when everything arrives ready to cook. Cons The amount of plastic packaging is excessive. Almost every ingredient seems to arrive wrapped separately, which creates a surprising amount of waste each week. I’ve also experienced occasional delivery issues, including missing ingredients, spoiled food, and even meat or fish being included in a plant-based order. While customer support is generally responsive and tries to compensate for mistakes, refunds are usually provided as account credit towards a future box rather than resolving the immediate problem. They’re always friendly and helpful when we run into questions. Pros We love how easy gusto is to use for a small business owner who has no experience in running payroll and all that comes with that piece of owning a business. They give checklists for hiring, file certain forms and submit certain taxes when needed. Cons I don’t like how you get charged per person if you want to upgrade to using the time tracking service. More than half of our team is on salary, so we only need time tracking for 2 employees but would be charged extra for 6.
