### "An Exceptional Tool for Small Business HR/Payroll Management"

January 13, 2022

5.0

Pros

Gusto was exceptionally user friendly for our small business from both and administrator perspective, and for employee ease of use. We regularly received positive feedback that the system made it simple and easy for our employees to access important information including requesting PTO or updating their Direct Deposit distribution.

Cons

Truthfully had no complaints about this software.

### "Perfect if you're just starting out "

September 9, 2020

4.0

Completely satisfied with Gusto from day one. Easy to set up, easy to run payroll every week, and they are connected to Guideline, so this year we are finally able to launch our own 401(k). For the price we pay, we are getting our money's worth, I think, for all the features and ease of use Gusto brings.

Pros

This was by far the easiest payroll system we could find when we started. Before this, we were doing everything manually and consuming a lot of time on paperwork for W2, reporting and all the other stuff we hate doing. My tax accountant turned me on to Gusto a few years ago and I set up my account and added employees within the hour. The steps are easy to understand, and there are tips and help offered along the way. For fees, Gusto is hard to beat. One of their competitors has some nice offerings, but we found that they were mostly for larger companies with more employees than we have. Gusto seemed a perfect fit for our size and our budget.

Cons

For us, it has been a positive experience since day one. It helps that we have a tax accountant who can help us navigate some of the trickier things. But even when she's not available, Gusto makes it pretty easy to figure out. Our tax accountant has some issues with Gusto's handling of some reports, but that's not anything I have had to deal with.

Reason for choosing Gusto

Price and ease of use.

### "Payroll services for small business"

August 21, 2018

5.0

The biggest benefit it gives me as a small business is the ability to not spend time on worrying about payroll, taxes, documentation, etc.

Pros

I like Gusto because it links to another service I use for time cards, it's trustworthy and my team can upload their own direct deposit info, pull their w-2 and change their w-4 as needed helping me to avoid the need to be full HR while trying to run a business. It sends you several reminders to run payroll before the deadline so you can meet your team's timing expectations. They file documents for you with the State and Fed government as well.

Cons

The software requires a pull of the payroll funds from your business account for 5 days in advance for contractors and for full-time employees as well - at least until you build up some "credit-worthiness" then it goes down to 2 days in advance. Also I wish there was a way to set up a calendar notice of when to have payroll approved to download it to your calendar without manually entering it.

### "Best way to automate your Payroll"

March 24, 2022

5.0

Pros

I love the fact that in addition to making payroll easier to run, they have the auto-run payroll feature which allows you to run payroll on autopilot.

Cons

Although they allow you to modify payroll after payment was processed, would like to be able to edit this before the payment goes out.

### "If you like the pain of Payroll Don't hire gusto! They make payroll seem non-existent!"

June 13, 2018

5.0

An all in one solution for payroll has saved me time and an insane amount of money. I can't say enough about how excited I am that technology like this exists.

Pros

I love, love, love that i can export emplyee hours from T-Sheets into Gusto with just a few clicks. I love that my employees can go onto Gusto and make changes to their own account for tax purposes and time off requests.

Cons

This isin't really a Con but since i've only been using it for a few years but I can't help but wonder if everything is getting done. Customer support reassures me that the IRS is getting my payments but they make everything soo easy it seems to good to be true!

### "We've Been With Them Since Their Beginning"

August 14, 2018

5.0

I would highly recommend them. Their site is so easy to use compared to other payroll companies (especially ADP). The people are nice and the price is great for all the things you get. They're more than just a payroll company.

Pros

Easy to use. Clear, concise interface. Pricing is reasonable. They make it really easy to open a 401k account for your team even if you're a super small company. Support has usually answered within 24-48 hours. Phone support is available. Integrates relatively easily with accounting software by mapping accounts and exporting as special files.

Cons

Really, only three minor complaints: I miss their old name, ZenPayroll. Gusto just doesn't explain them like ZenPayroll did. Payroll truly is easy with them. Gusto is literally defined as "the enjoyment or vigor in doing something; zest"—the direct opposite of Zen. That's a total reversal that doesn't make sense. Also, deposits into employee accounts show up as Gusto rather than our company. Finally, accounting integration is dependent on downloading files and then importing. I would really like to see direct integration with the major accounting platforms like Quickbooks and Xero. I know, I'm nitpicking in both cases, but I had to think of something...

### "Gusto is a great user-friendly option for employees"

July 24, 2023

5.0

Overall, it is a great program and I would recommend it to small businesses.

Pros

This is an easy to use software. There is an app that can be downloaded as well. Simple and straight forward.

Cons

The online program frequently logs itself out which can be frustrating. It also sometimes will not populate paystubs. I wish it was able to be used with 1099 contractors.

### "Great payroll service for the little guy"

October 22, 2020

5.0

Gusto is doing a better job than my previous payroll company for less money. They seem to really care about their customers and their experience.

Pros

The payroll features make doing payroll very easy. The employees can log their times and I can easily verify them and sync it with payroll. I feel like this company really cares about their customers much more than my previous "large payroll provider"

Cons

Site navigation can be a little bit difficult at times. I have to do some searching to find what I am looking for. Reporting is OK but could be better.

Alternatives considered

[QuickBooks Payroll](https://www.capterra.com/p/174981/QuickBooks/)

Reason for choosing Gusto

I had used QB in the past and it was ok, but Gusto seems to have more features for a better price and they seem to care more about my business than Intuit does. Intuit is very difficult to work with.

Switched from

[RUN Powered by ADP](https://www.capterra.com/p/185859/RUN/)

Run was not user friendly and much too expensive. I felt like an unimportant customer to a large company.

### "Digital One-Stop Shop"

November 4, 2022

4.0

My company doesn't use Gusto to it's full potential, for example commuter benefits, healthcare, or expenses. We use it for clocking in and out of a fully remote job and receiving direct deposits. It's a clean, simple, modernization on all things payroll. It simplified my taxes and has our 401k in one place. It's also very easy to track and request time off.

Pros

Couldn't be easier to use once implemented. I particularly like the display on direct deposit day where you see your pay, what was put into taxes, and your 401k account. It really simplified taxes to have it all visible in one spot. Easy to request time off and see how much you have.

Cons

Adding projects for team members isn't foolproof. Teammates constantly need to remind admins that they were left off a project. We haven't needed to speak much to customer service (which is a plus) but when they do want to talk to you it's to up-sell on new features and don't seem to care for opinions regarding the product or listen regarding bugs/fixes.

### "Has 100% Enabled My Startup"

May 11, 2020

5.0

So great. I love Gusto and feel a lot of gratitude towards the product. I've been able to focus on the people on my team and growing my business instead of back office tasks, which has enabled us to grow without tedious pain points and chores.

Pros

Gusto has made HR, payroll, benefits, contractor payments, and tax paperwork almost invisible to me as a startup CEO. We implemented Gusto when it was just me and my cofounder, and it has scaled beautifully to 15 FTE. The messaging and dashboard UX is extremely intuitive and friendly. They do a good job of setting expectations and explaining what is automated vs what you need to do yourself. I have almost never been disappointed by Gusto.

Cons

I love Gusto -- very few CONS to report. I would say that Gusto works best for domestic employees; I don't use Gusto for international contractors (who I pay through paypal and upwork). The only thing Gusto doesn't do for us is our San Francisco compliance paperwork, which I didn't realize and had to pay late fees on.

### "Gusto: The Best Payroll For Small Business "

February 15, 2019

5.0

We have been using Gusto since it was ZenPayroll and I wouldn't think of using any other product. Gusto makes payroll simple, integrates with Quickbooks and gives our company a clear transparent payroll process. Employees and clients can look at past payroll history effortlessly and transparently. An asset to any business.

Pros

Gusto sets out everything in a clear concise manner. It has an easy to use interface which means less time concentrating on payroll and more time concentrating on projects and the needs of our clients.

Cons

We haven't found anything that we disliked about Gusto or about the customer support. I can't say this about any other product we use in our business.

### "Let the little piggybank handle your payroll processing"

Pros

It was easy to set up, easy for employees to use, Gusto even created a Payroll Protection Program form to help users applying for those loans during COVID.

Cons

Just a few little tweaks to leave time process and opt-out of benefits process - already described.

Reason for choosing Gusto

Cost, ease of use.

### "It's simple and easy to follow"

April 21, 2022

5.0

I used it for 2 years. It was simple to use, the onboarding was easy to follow and the dashboard made it easy to navigate.

Pros

It was a snap to set up. My payroll was easy to follow and my bonuses and PTO were easy to track. And when it came time for tax season it was easy to find the forms and everything was already calculated for me.

Cons

I didn't find any flaws although some employees found it a bit confusing.

### "Great, affordable payroll software!"

September 30, 2020

5.0

Pros

Gusto provides seamless integration to workman's compensation, insurance, 401k, and other facets of human resources, in addition to filing of periodic tax forms with governmental entities. The amount my firm and clients pay for Gusto is a great bang for buck as compared to the services provided by Gusto.

Cons

The only problems I have with Gusto is that there were hiccups where we were required to file our own payroll tax filings for certain states, due to Gusto not being set up as the TPA at the time. This was mostly our fault, but I had hoped that Gusto could help us resolve this on their end.

### "Highly recommended - easy to to do payroll"

September 11, 2021

Overall experience rolling out this product in HR has been great - users are happy, and has improved performance >15%

Pros

\- excellent interface - handles variety of employee class - full time, part time and contractors - handles paperwork for administration, tax purposes and immigration. No other competitors dot hat - available across all states in US

Cons

\- Inflexibility in some areas, limited choices and product makes you stick to their workflow. Trying to submit for a feature request takes a long time to implement

### "Gusto is an ideal payroll service for smaller companies"

July 16, 2020

5.0

This software save us processing time and the headaches of filing payroll tax returns and paying taxes. They prefer working with companies with up to 50 employees I think - really big payrolls will not be a good fit for Gusto.

Pros

Gusto technical support is excellent and the product is easy to use. As a cloud based payroll program it is easy to run payroll from anywhere at any time. I have had clients in different service based and non profit businesses on it for several years. The cost is reasonable and in fact the core program can save a great deal as compared with the big nationally recognized names. This company is also national and offers many employee benefits that the leaders offer. You can set payroll to run automatically if it is the same every time, and it syncs with Quickbooks Online online.

Cons

I sometimes have a little trouble customizing reports quickly and have not seen a way to save them for future use. But they do have a good selection of reports available. That includes being really proactive about PPP loan reports.

Reason for choosing Gusto

integration with QBO, price, easy of use, support

October 20, 2022

5.0

Pros

Gusto takes care of EVERYTHING payroll. They integrate benefits, accommodate salary and hourly employees, can pay contracts domestically and internationally. Their software platform is perfect for a small business and very cost effective.

Cons

### "Amazing to track hours and do payroll!"

April 24, 2023

5.0

It has been amazing, I always get paid on time, I can track and edit my working hours, I have separate savings where gusto separates a certain amount of money per paycheck and I can take it out whenever I need it.

Pros

I love how easy it is to use it, they have an amazing incentive for referrals, and you can have a Gusto debit card where you can withdraw money before you are even paid.

Cons

I love everything about Gusto. It is great how you can edit the hours you have worked and how easy it is to use.

### "Best platform for payroll, benefits & more"

December 13, 2019

5.0

Overall it has been great to have everything in one place. Before we used Zenefits and Gusto and moved everything to Gusto. Its been a good move.

Pros

It simple to use and does everything we need to run the primary administrative tasks for our business.

Cons

The HSA feature did not move over seamlessly from Zenefits and is more expensive for a small team to have and the 401k option has been a bit of work to get moved over.

We had benefits in Zenefits and payroll in Gusto when both companies concentrated on these areas. Once they both begin offering both we weighed our options to combine everything into a single platform. It seemed like Gusto was headed in the right direction more than Zenefits.

### "Gusto has saved me so much time when it comes to quarterly and year-end form filings!"

December 28, 2017

5.0

Time-saving!

Pros

The Gusto customer-service team is amazing. From the moment you decide you want to implement the system, they are right there to promptly answer all of your questions and assist with the migration of information. For client with multiple states, the cost is more than worth the times it saves me in filing quarterly and year-end payroll tax returns. Employees love it as well as they have one place to go to see their paystubs, W2s, benefits, and PTO online.

Cons

A few items are not as customizable as a few other payroll products will let you do (mostly with clergy housing).

### "Part-Time Employee of 9 Months"

August 16, 2022

5.0

It's been great and easy to use!

Pros

I started my job in November and have been using Gusto for the past 9 months. I was surprised about how easy it was to report my hours and get paid. I also love that there is a Gusto wallet where I can have a separate card and savings account connected to my payroll account. The other services I have used for other jobs just don't compete.

Cons

My job allows me to round up by 15 minutes, but I am unable to report this at the exact time I am leaving because we cannot log future hours. Just wish there was a way to disable this for small increments of time like that.

### "Nice software, terrible implementation"

June 29, 2021

2.0

Nice at the beginning, terrible if you have people in different states. Hopefully they got stuff done better with the pandemic and the bigger remote wave. I would only use it in a small CA startup, and nowhere else.

Pros

Nice looking software, and does most of the things you expect it to do.

Cons

I had issues with taxes (my state taxes were only taken one month, resulting in owing thousands of dollars) and with health insurance enrollment, all within the same year, so I think the backend of this software is not trustworthy.

### "Great Solution for HRIS Needs"

January 21, 2022

4.0

I have enjoyed working with them and think it is one of the best options in market at the price. At this time the meets almost all of our needs.

Pros

They make payroll extremely easy and have rolled out functions like holiday pay, PTO, and time tracking that keep everything internal and integrated. Customer service is really nice and helpful. The online onboarding makes life very easy!

Cons

It can be a little confusing understanding what the company handles in terms of state and federal agency payments and filings. Their customer service is great but wait times can sometimes be very long and replies can be on the slow side via email. We did have some issues on the benefits administration side and chose to move our benefits due to slow lead time in getting new employees processed, but the integration into payroll when we had it was nice.
