### "I'm a small business with two owners"

I'm a small business with two owners, we're beyond fed up with Gusto. I wish I could leave no stars. This is not a one-off issue; it has happened every single year, and this year was the final straw. Gusto once again withdrew money from my business account without authorization, despite me explicitly handling my own tax payments and clearly stating, in writing, that I did not approve the withdrawal. This time, Gusto sent a message saying they would pull $756 at 17:00 PM. I responded within 30 minutes, clearly objecting and stating I do not authorize tax payments through Gusto. Despite that, the money was pulled less than 24 hours later. No consent. No signed authorization. No meaningful opportunity to stop it. When I pushed back two days later, I was told the money had already been remitted and that I now have to chase a government agency (I'm assuming the IRS, but who knows, they wont tell me) by myself to attempt a refund. Gusto takes no responsibility and simply shrugs once the money is gone. Gusto’s actions continuously creates unnecessary financial strain and wasted time. Their explanation is always the same: confusing, bureaucratic, and designed to shift blame back onto the customer. The platform itself is misleading. You think you have control over tax payments, you don’t. Gusto will pull funds anyway, then hide behind process and timing excuses when called out. This is unprofessional, and frankly unacceptable for a payroll company that handles people’s livelihoods. I am done. I am moving my business to Paychex, a company that understands authorization, accountability, and basic respect for its customers’ money. If you value control over your finances and don’t want to fight the same battle year after year, look elsewhere.

Pros: Employees were paid on time during the years I used Gusto. There really isn't any more pros. its hard to get ahold of someone when you have a problem. which for me is every year.

Cons

Everything else. Hidden fees and they pull funds to cover "taxes" even if you handle taxes separately.

### "Gusto: Easy, Affordable, but Not Perfect"

Gusto is affordable, easy to integrate, and employee-friendly, which makes it a strong choice for many businesses. However, some workflow and tax-related issues could definitely be improved to make the experience smoother for administrators.

Pros

Gusto integrates easily with other systems we use, which saves time and reduces manual work. The employee app is very convenient—our team finds it simple to access pay stubs, tax documents, and personal information right from their phones. It’s also very affordable compared to many other payroll services, especially for small to mid-sized businesses, and offers good value for what you get.

Cons

One major frustration is that when an employee is rehired, Gusto does not reset their settings. This can cause confusion and extra manual cleanup. We’ve also had ongoing issues with city tax handling, which has required additional monitoring to make sure everything is correct. Another small but annoying usability issue is that when you tab to the next employee, it doesn’t stay in the same section you were working in—you have to keep navigating back to where you were, which slows things down.

### "Gusto is a great software! Highly Suggest! "

Overall, Gusto is an excellent resource for payroll, managing salaries, and tracking time off. We also find it very useful for hosting employee manuals, documents, and training modules. Our team completes their annual sexual harassment training through the platform, which is quick and engaging thanks to the interactive videos! We have been using Gusto for years and it has truly changed how we operate. While we have a relatively small team, I can imagine this software would be equally beneficial for a larger organization. Plus, the seasonal outfits on the loading page mascot (a cute little pig) are a delightful touch! We love it!

Pros

Gusto has significantly streamlined our payroll and time tracking. Its user-friendly interface makes it easy to monitor employee hours and resolve issues efficiently. The location tracking feature is particularly helpful, as it allows employees to manually clock in, clock out, and take breaks within our building's geofence all from their phones!

Cons

The user interface for employees can be somewhat clunky at times. They have reported long loading periods when attempting to clock in or out, and there are occasional issues with the location \[tracking/accuracy\].

Great Experience! Have been using Gusto for over 7+ years now and have not even wanted or needed to look for any additional services!

Pros

Very easy to use app that allows all employees the ease of time tracking and time off requests. Great customer support for small business management and value for your money!

Cons

Nothing! We have been able to set up the app to allow for as much autonomy as we like for our employees to have, while still being streamlined for payroll and schedules!

Overall, it's a great platform to manage payroll and benefits, although sometimes prices seem a bit high for the quality of providers/carriers.

Pros

Good employee management and benefits management, although the offer of carriers is not as wide as other providers/brokers. It's easy to use although sometimes it takes longer to load and continue to next sections, but overall it's great for small businesses and start-up. It also provides an extensive and descriptive way to manage users and permissions.

Cons

Customer support is good but sometimes it takes too long to solve an issue because I keep on getting redirected to a new 'specialist' on the topic.

We love it and have been using it for over 10 years. I highly recommend anyone who has to do payroll to use it. Takes the headache out of payroll and HR.

Pros

Works really well and is easy to navigate. The onboarding and benefits are streamlined and easy for everyone. My teammates love the app and that they can see everything in one place.

Cons

The customer service can be a little frustrating at times. Sometimes you get someone who understands and is knowledgeable. Sometimes you don't.

In the beggining it was okay, now customer service and response is abysmal.. I cannot get a response without doing things like this.

Pros

They seemed to have an easy and effective setup this was a lie. In the begging they responded quickly to chat only to never respond to anything short of escalations

Cons

They lie about forms and tax filing so that they cause loss of money to the company. They claim i filled out a w-4 which they used to determine the tax witholding but they lied about it

It was simple and the user face, design was great both for admin and employees. It was also a good cost for the company.

It didn't have many capabilities or integrations which would have made things a bit simpler for the company.

I'd recommend Gusto to even the smallest of businesses. It simplifies Payroll and Human Resources, it bundles a lot of useful tools such as onboarding, and its scalable.

Pros

Gusto is relativley easy to use. Its intuitive interface is very user friendly granting forward access to setting up and managing payroll, onboarding, and benefits.

Cons

Customer support with Gusto can be slow and sometimes not helpful. The mobile app is also not very inclusive, you have to log in on a web based computer to effectively manage.

### "Horrible FSA, love the payroll."

Up until the transition to Elevate and processing FSA by Gusto, everything was fine. For some reason, the team at Gusto doesn't get FSA.

Pros

Gusto as a payroll management software/app is very close to a four star. Cute, gets the job done well, nice emails letting you know you paycheck is coming and more. Very easy to use when considering JUST payroll.

Cons

When Gusto incorporated Elevate to run FSA, it has literally been a nightmare! It's so bad, we don't want to do FSA anymore! Literally, just this week, we had an issue with a credit card transaction denied from a pharmacy. When we checked with Gusto support (which can only be done by AI or via email if AI starts messing up), it was because a pharmacy was marked as a non-FSA entity. A pharmacy? It was such a mess that what was 100% automated by the doctor and pharmacy, the pharmacy couldn't undo the transaction and was going to send back the prescription. The family had to go in person to the pharmacy, use a different credit card and not be able to use their own FSA money. Then, in Gusto attempting to fix the bug had the audacity to ask for a receipt for the transaction. Really!! A receipt for a denied transaction. Before I would ever recommend that great payroll that Gusto has been, they need to either stop doing FSA all together or find a partner that does FSA well.

All in all, Gusto is an excellent platform for small businesses and could likely be scaled for larger businesses as well. It is a modern, user-friendly HR solution that I'd recommend to anybody.

Pros

Gusto, as a user, is incredibly simple to use and navigate. All the tools it has for employee management are easily understood and it makes managing HR responsibilities for our small team a breeze. The ability to access everything on mobile allows for quick uses.

Cons

The time-off features work really well, but could be a little more robust. It would especially nice if there was a more detailed view of the calendar for the whole team with all the time-off visible.

### "Decent Option with Some Limitations"

It was okay. Not the best, but it serves its intended function. Price-wise, I think they are competitive enough for the offerings. I would recommend it for small businesses that need to pay US-based staff. For international staff, there's some limitations on countries you can enroll.

Pros

Cheap option for paying US-based contractors and employees. Their customer support is also great. Every time I request support, someone is available online or over the phone to talk to, which is a feature that most other similar providers lack.

Cons

The user interface could be challenging. There is definitely a learning stage for new users who have never used similar platforms before. In my experience, I've used several platforms similar to Gusto, and I believe their payroll function needs improvement. There are limitations on reporting fuctions that needs some customization.

Gusto works best as a payroll-focused checking account, not as your financial command center. It excels at getting you paid reliably, often early, and without confusion. If that’s your main goal, it delivers. If you want robust banking tools or fast individual support, you’ll likely need a second bank alongside it.

Pros

Consistent, on-time payroll deposits. Paychecks arrive when they’re supposed to, which is the bare minimum but still worth praising. Early direct deposit. Funds often show up up to two days early, which actually helps instead of just sounding helpful. Simple, clean interface. Pay stubs, tax documents, and transaction history are easy to find and easy to read. No hidden fees. No monthly maintenance fees or surprise deductions quietly stealing lunch money. Clear pay breakdowns. Earnings, deductions, and year-to-date totals are transparent and straightforward.

Cons

Limited banking features. This is a checking account, not a full-service bank. No joint accounts, limited bill pay, and minimal extras. Support favors employers. If you’re just an employee with a problem, response times can feel slower than they should. Cash deposits are inconvenient. Not ideal if you still live in the physical-currency world. Few customization options. Alerts, budgeting tools, and spending controls are pretty basic.

Overall, it was fine when we were a small sized company. As we got closer to 50+ is when the problems began. Benefits were always having issues with file feeds and Gusto did some backend pay adjustments without informing us first, which caused problems. But like i said, under 50, it's a good solution.

Pros

I liked the platform look, its very friendly and modern looking. It's a one stop shop for employees in a small sized company. I liked that it had company matching options as well. I also liked the ease with getting states setup for tax purposes.

Cons

I don't like the customer service, it's an email and it can takes an extended amount of time to get any issues resolved. I also didn't like that you couldn't do any mass uploads. They're still sending us emails even though we cut services over 3 years ago.

Overall, Gusto is the most cost effective option to manage all things employees. I've never experienced any bugs or outages that affected my business in the 10 years or so I've used it.

Pros

I love how simple it is to use as Gusto guides you through all the requirements, from taxes to reports and files them all automatically.

Cons

It's a bit difficult to link Gusto to benefits like workers comp and insurance. You have to deal with a few different reps to get it to completed.

### "Go For Gusto!"

Gusto is so much better than the other platforms we have used! It even has a chat for your company employees. One employee can also have more than one account, if needed, but just one login, making it very easy to use.

Pros

Gusto has wonderful ease of use for everyone. It's easy to enroll, navigate, and see everything you need all in one spot.

Cons

The only downside, which is very minor, is you cannot see your upcoming pay. It will show you that it's on its way with a deposit date, but no paystub until it has been deposited.

We have had a good experience with gusto’s software and with their customer service. They’re always friendly and helpful when we run into questions.

Pros

We love how easy gusto is to use for a small business owner who has no experience in running payroll and all that comes with that piece of owning a business. They give checklists for hiring, file certain forms and submit certain taxes when needed.

Cons

I don’t like how you get charged per person if you want to upgrade to using the time tracking service. More than half of our team is on salary, so we only need time tracking for 2 employees but would be charged extra for 6.

I really am liking Gusto. I will say, when your boss doesn't order the write check stock, it makes printing checks a challenge, but I have a work around, so it all worked out!

Pros

I really adore being able to test the product before paying for something you may struggle with. The Customer Serivces is so incredible for the most part. Once you spend time with Gusto, the ease of use is amazing!

Cons

Asking a question and instead of the customer service rep referring you to someone with the experience, they just repeat your question, twice. I shouldn't have to request to be transferred, the person who didn't know should learn and initiate connecting you to someone with the correct experience to answer the question propsed.

The best way to describe it is easy. Everting is stored for you digitally so you don’t have to keep track of documents. I love the app. It’s easy to use and user friendly.

Pros

How easy it is to track your hours,time off and pay. I can go back to the first paycheck I got. I can also request time off and see my balances in an instant.

Cons

Gusto requires me to put a note every time I clock in and it doesn’t any of my coworkers. I just type “on site” each morning because I don’t know what else to say.

My overall experience has been heartwarming and smooth. It has been fun seeing every engaged and connecting with each other and allowing to share and show appreciation of others hard work.

Pros

I love how easy the app is and how you can connect with other staff while recognizing quality service, hard work, and dedication of others.

Cons

I haven't found much I don't like. I wish there was profiles to see all your or others recognitions rather than all in one section having to scroll way down to find a specific one.

Gusto is a user friendly platform for payroll and works great for small businesses and non profit organizations. Its easy to run payroll, employee onboarding, compliance and automates tax filings.

Pros

Gusto is easy to use, and have customer support that respond rather quickly. It provides great help to small business management that do not want to invest a lot of money to do their payroll. It makes employee management smooth as it can separate regular employees to independent contractors.

Cons

It is not applicable here as Gusto assisted for what we needed as a company. Gusto does a great job.

Gusto made it easy to clock in and out for my shifts, and it was nice to be able to track both my hours and pay for that pay period. It also was smooth and easy to view previous pay period information, as well as tax information at the end of the year. I actually was also able to log in and pull tax information from previous years long after I had left that employer. I think Gusto is a great software to use coming from the side of an employee and would highly recommend!

Pros

I used Gusto as an employee at a previous employer and it was great! Super easy to use, the app ran smoothly with no issues or glitches. It was fast and simple to clock in and out, and easy to see and track my hours and pay!

Cons

For what I used it for I didn’t have any cons. It was easy to download from a link the employer emailed and simple to set up and use.
