Overall it was actually a great product to use and if I were to open an ECommerce site myself, I would consider them again.

Pros

Ease of use, integration capabilities, clean UI, organization of most used features were easy to find.

Cons

Random glitches, some add-ons stated they were compatible but were in fact not, some issues with image uploads.

### "Flexible, Scalable Platform for Complex Catalogs and Hybrid D2C + B2B"

March 14, 2026

5.0

We replatformed from WooCommerce, launched on BigCommerce Pro, and upgraded to Enterprise within our first year as early growth exceeded expectations. Day‑to‑day, BigCommerce has been stable and low maintenance, which was a noticeable improvement over the hosting, updating, and plugin‑management overhead we dealt with previously. The platform has also scaled cleanly with our operational needs without forcing us into architectural changes or heavy refactoring as we grew. On our Enterprise agreement, the trailing‑12‑month overage model was the hardest part to model; clarify how yours works, and if you’re pacing over your tier before renewal, a mid‑contract upgrade can be cheaper than riding rolling overages. While broader third‑party support for Multi‑Storefront/Multi‑Location and a more modern native search experience would be welcome, BigCommerce overall has been reliable, capable, and straightforward to grow with.

Pros

One of BigCommerce’s biggest strengths is its true hierarchical category structure. When we replatformed from WooCommerce, we evaluated BigCommerce Enterprise against Shopify Plus, and Shopify’s Collections simply couldn’t replicate our deep category/subcategory structure without relying on apps. BigCommerce supports this natively, which made SEO planning and catalog organization much cleaner for us. Another standout is BigCommerce’s native product customization capabilities. The platform lets you add required acknowledgements, collect customer input via text or choice fields, and use the Product Pick List to let shoppers add compatible accessories or components directly from a product page. For anyone selling modular or configuration‑heavy products, this built‑in flexibility is extremely useful and reduces the need for app‑based workarounds. The Promotions editor is also very capable. I once suggested adding the ability to cap a percentage-based discount by a dollar amount, and that functionality eventually became available, which helps for certain promotional structures. For B2B, BigCommerce’s pricing tools are practical and flexible. On Enterprise, we choose between Customer Groups, Price Lists, or the Promotions engine depending on what fits the scenario, as each tool serves a distinct purpose. We also like that we can run D2C and B2B on the same platform—one catalog and promotions engine, with B2B‑specific pricing/visibility where needed—without maintaining separate stacks. The app ecosystem is solid as well. Shopify still leads in sheer quantity, but BigCommerce generally has strong options in each major category, and what’s available tends to serve mid‑market needs well. Theme customization has also been approachable for us. Because the theming system relies on standard web technologies, the theme editor and Script Manager made it easy to add small JavaScript calculators, light CSS tweaks, and other front‑end adjustments using only basic coding skills and some help from AI—work that would have otherwise required hiring a developer. Support has also been reliable overall, and after we upgraded from Pro to Enterprise, the responsiveness and depth of technical investigations noticeably improved.

Cons

The built‑in AI copywriter isn’t particularly strong, so we rely on external AI tools for generating product descriptions. The biggest limitation for us is the lack of broader third‑party support for Multi‑Storefront and Multi‑Location. BigCommerce provides both features, but many OMS, ERP, and inventory systems still don’t integrate with them in a way that makes a single‑backend, multi‑storefront setup truly practical. The potential is there, but until the ecosystem catches up, we maintain separate stores. Another issue is the way BigCommerce presents its negotiated or preferred card rates with Braintree on the pricing page. The advertised rates look very attractive, but in practice there was no clear path to obtaining them. Documentation didn’t explain how qualification works, support redirected us to Braintree, and even after meeting the listed conditions, it became evident that the rates weren’t realistically accessible. We eventually negotiated with other gateways and moved on. BigCommerce’s newer BigCommerce Payments offering for non‑Enterprise plans lists rates that seem much closer to what merchants actually see in reality. On the search side, Semantic Search was announced for 2024 but still hasn’t materialized. Meanwhile, Shopify’s native search has improved significantly, so BigCommerce currently lags unless you use a third‑party search solution. BigCommerce appears more focused on agentic search initiatives and Feedonomics Surface, which doesn’t help onsite search relevance today.

[Shopify Plus](https://www.capterra.com/p/171845/Shopify-Plus/)

Reason for choosing BigCommerce

At the time we evaluated Shopify Plus, Shopify Payments couldn’t pay us out in both USD and CAD as a Canadian merchant, which was important because our site served both the U.S. and Canada. While they’ve since added multi‑currency payouts for certain Canadian stores, it wasn’t available then, and using a third‑party gateway would have triggered Shopify’s additional transaction fees. Shopify Plus was also considerably more expensive and we anticipated a higher ongoing app bill because several things we get natively on BigCommerce would require paid apps on Shopify. On top of that, we didn’t feel we could have achieved the same level of frontend quality, performance, SEO cleanliness, or overall flexibility without more customization work. In our view, Shopify’s main advantage was the sheer size of its app store, but when we compared everything else that mattered to us, BigCommerce offered much better value and fit.

Switched from

[WooCommerce](https://www.capterra.com/p/225601/WooCommerce/)[WordPress](https://www.capterra.com/p/131687/WordPress/)

We switched from WooCommerce because maintaining a WordPress‑based ecommerce stack had become too time‑consuming for a small team. Theme updates, plugin conflicts, hosting maintenance, and breakages were constant overhead. Even though our software costs have gone up since moving to BigCommerce, our business has grown significantly, and the platform removed a huge amount of technical friction. Not having to worry about updates, server issues, plugin compatibility, or babysitting the site has been worth the trade‑off, especially with the growth we’ve experienced.

### "Do your research and make sure your demo is thorough"

February 5, 2026

3.0

Less than spectacular. Whenever I need to make changes, it takes much longer than I think it should take. The links for help don't answer the question you are looking for and send you to additional links that still don't solve the problem

Pros

The customer facing website looks good. I like the scrolling banner that runs across the home page, although I wish you could add another image or two.

Cons

It is very difficult to manipulate the templates that are set. It is especially difficult to set up promotions. Often when making changes to one area, it removes or changes information in another area.

### "BigCommerce Meets Your eCommerce Selling Needs"

June 13, 2025

4.0

We have been using BigCommerce for nearly 8 years, and I have been pleased with the breadth of options we have to integrate other apps to enhance its use. We use B2B Ninja for our quoting tool, which integrates with BigCommerce (and they recently purchased), saving our staff order entry time.

Pros

I like the ease of product editing, the robust app marketplace, and the customer support. Thye have made improvements over the years to the UI, making it easier to customize, and you can work with many partners to customize your store.

Cons

I like the reporting capabilities and options the least. They seem limited and challenging to customize. I wish there were more out-of-the-box reporting options, particularly for products with variants. I would also like them to improve B2B Ninja, the quoting tool they purchased.

### "Great customization options and useful analytics"

April 8, 2026

Overall we've been very happy. We've recently reviewed all our options for redoing our website, and still decided BigCommerce was the best fit for us.

Pros

The ability to customise our website to suit a range of different products and markets. It also has great analytics.

Cons

The price is very high in comparison to other options, but it also is more suited to our needs. It also isn't as beginner friendly as other options we have explored.

February 26, 2026

Happy with customization opportunities, but there was a bit of a learning curve as a result. Overall, very happy we moved forward with BigCommerce.

Pros

Abandoned cart recovery, multi-channel selling, advanced native SEO tools supplement our reporting capabilities, real-time shipping quotes

Cons

For enhanced customization, it trades off simple interface. However, our team went through training before using the platform which helped. Premium themes are on pricier side.

### "Good Option for Growing Ecommerce Sites"

March 12, 2026

BigCommerce feels like a platform built for stores that are already thinking about scaling. It includes a lot of ecommerce features by default, which can be helpful in the long run.

Pros

The platform offers solid product management tools and good performance even with larger catalogs. It’s nice not having to rely too much on external plugins.

Cons

The interface isn’t the most intuitive at first, and it may take some time to get comfortable with all the options available.

Pros

### "Bigcommerce edged out the competition for my online store."

February 21, 2020

4.0

I tried several shopping cart e-commerce solutions and found that Bigcommerce suited my needs the most. I ended up using a free style template and customized it myself saving me a lot of money. Online and phone support are top notch!

Pros

The ease of use was a major factor in my decision to go with Bigcommerce. There are many choices out there for online retailers to build their storefront. I liked the ease of customization and the large amount of standard features. Their integration with online marketplaces and social media really saves a lot of time.

Cons

There is an annual sales cap that I'm worried about, but when I get to that point I will just upgrade the service to where I need it. There are not enough free store style templates available. Custom styles get very costly. Some features that should be standard are non existent.

### "The Perfect Solution For My Needs"

December 20, 2022

5.0

I have been using BigCommerce for the past year to run my online store, and I am extremely satisfied with its performance. One of the standout features of this software is its robust and user-friendly e-commerce platform. It's easy to set up and manage products, process orders, and handle shipping and tax calculations.Another feature that I really appreciate is the integration with various payment gateways, such as PayPal and Stripe. This has made it easy for me to accept payments from my customers and has streamlined my checkout process.Overall, I highly recommend BigCommerce to any business owner looking for a reliable and feature-rich e-commerce platform. Its many features and intuitive design make it a valuable asset for any online store.

Pros

One of the biggest benefits of BigCommerce is its comprehensive marketing and SEO tools. These tools have helped me to effectively promote my products and drive traffic to my store. For example, I have used the built-in email marketing tool to send targeted campaigns to my customers, and I have used the SEO tools to optimize my product pages for search engines.

Cons

BigCommerce provides a wide range of features and functionality, but some users may find that they are limited in their ability to customize certain aspects of their store. For example, users may not be able to fully customize the design or layout of their store, or they may be limited in their ability to add custom functionality or integrations.

### "I love BigCommerce"

June 30, 2021

5.0

Whenever an order is placed, I see it immediately in my email. I print the invoice, pass off to my staff, and they process using Ship Station, which is integrated through BigCommerce. All of our sales are saved and easy to search through on BigCommerce. When working with changing the look, etc., of the site, very easy to do. Customer service. Love the live chat option, and whenever I call I can talk with someone very quickly. Excellent service.

Pros

My business is a healthcare practice with a brick and mortar shop and online store for purchasing products and services. BigCommerce has been so easy to work with. I have been with them for some 10 years plus and couldn't be more satisfied. Customer service is top-notch, fast, and always available 24/7.

Cons

I want to be able to go in and make a printable catalogue. I don't know that any software provides that, so not a complaint.

Just better.

### "An outstanding ecommerce platform with great pricing and an amazing quality"

July 31, 2022

4.0

Pros

The platform is easy to use, and non-trained or non-technical users are able to use the platform. Comes in a very good pricing structure which is appealing to small and medium-sized businesses. Great website builder and CMS, perfect for creating products and product categories and managing SKUs. Order management, payment processing, shipping and taxation are very straightforward and useful for users. The platform is highly customizable and is one of the best eCommerce platforms in the market.

Cons

The pricing for the platform is great but every add-on or plugin is paid which adds a huge cost for businesses as they expand, which makes them almost pay the same amount as other eCommerce platforms. Reporting and analytics are very basic, and not customizable as per analyst standards. Changing themes or anything within the backend requires expertise in HTML/CSS.

### "BigCommerce Review"

June 24, 2022

5.0

BigCommerce is a platform that has helped me to build my online store. It is easy to use and has a wide variety of features that allow you to customize your store to your needs. I have found the customer service to be excellent, and they are always available to help you with any questions or problems you may have. Overall, I would highly recommend BigCommerce to anyone looking to build an online store.

Pros

There are many reasons to love BigCommerce, but here are just a few of the top pros: 1. BigCommerce is incredibly easy to use, even for beginners. The platform is intuitive and straightforward, so you can start selling products right away. 2. There are tons of features and integrations available, so you can customize your store to fit your unique needs. 3. BigCommerce is reliable and secure, so you can feel confident that your data is safe and protected. 4. Customer support is excellent, and they're always happy to help with any questions or issues you may have. 5. The platform is constantly evolving and improving, so you can always count on getting the latest features and updates.

Cons

BigCommerce doesn't offer as much flexibility as other platforms when it comes to design and customization.

### "Terrific admin UI and purchaser experience - BigCommerce will not fix bugs customers find"

May 8, 2020

3.0

The software has been solid for our customers and the administration UI is very easy to use. We have outstanding technical issues that have been open for more than a year and are still not resolved (HTTP status 500 errors that intermittently are returned from their backend APIs) - they say they cannot see the errors in their backend logs and we must send them examples even though we have this happen 10-12 times a day, continually, for over a year. Their Stripe integration does not include the email address field when they send payment requests to Stripe, so customers do not get a credit card receipt from Stripe. Requesting this be changed resulted in them telling us only 1 other customer wanted this feature and that we should switch to Authorize or Brain Tree because it works with those processors) - this felt like a move to downplay the use of Stripe and push us towards vendors that BigCommerce perhaps prefers? It is hard to believe we are the only customer that would want Stripe to send CC receipts to customers - their built-in receipt mechanism does not allow a store to include the last 4 digits of the credit card in the receipt the store sends, which means customers have to call in to customer support when they are organizational customers to figure out which CC is used - a very poor experience for our customers and for our customer support team.

Pros

It is highly customizable, has most of the features you'd expect in an e-commerce solution, and the APIs are well-documented.

Cons

\* Seemingly easy solutions to known issues get stuck in their support bureaucracy and disappear \* Their logging does not allow software engineers nor CSRs to see the specifics of errors - customers must provide client-side stack traces to help them find errors on their backend (for example, API calls that return HTTP status 500)

Reason for choosing BigCommerce

Was chosen before I joined the company.

### "BigCommerce is the best e-commerce platform that ever existed"

July 21, 2022

5.0

The product is recommended for both B2C and B2B offers very user-friendly interface and outstanding customer services. We have managed our online store with BigCommerce and the company made us convert more than any other previous platforms.

Pros

The platform is simply extraordinary, very easy to use. -Great for web design and managing content within the website/online store -You can easily offer vouchers and discounts with add ons to prospects -Managing orders and processing orders is very simple and straightforward -Processing payments is great -Great for reviewing all the products and helps prospects decide what to buy

Cons

\-I would only point out as the pricing of the platform is the strength of the product as it is not expensive, but every add on comes with additional price which adds up for us. -Time to time updating themes have been problematic

### "Would switch if I could find something better"

March 30, 2018

3.0

Pros

Easy to get up and running. Features are some of the best offered in this class. Pricing doesn't take a cut off of sales.

Cons

Many advanced features lacking or cost extra, like filtered search and navigation. Bugs are fixed and new features are added based on number of requests as opposed to the severity or need of the fix or feature. As a result, some bugs can persist for years if only a few people have reported them. No release notes or detailed info on updates. Overall it seems the company is still run more like a startup as instead of an established company that's accountable to their customers. Seems they focus more on doing things that get them headlines, marketing material, and talking points instead of what most meets their customer's needs. They can be quite tonedeaf when it comes to understanding the way retail works and what the needs of small businesses really are. It's quite a shame as there is a lot of potential. The only reason I stay is because either the better platforms are unaffordable (Magento, Demandware, Netsuite, Miva, etc) or the ones comparable in price lack essential features or have their own problems that I can't workaround (Shopify, Volusion, etc.) So I'm stuck until we grow more. Don't get me wrong, they have improved greatly in the 6 years I've been with them, but they have a long way to go.

### "Excellent Store Management Plumbing and Partner Alliances"

January 16, 2020

3.0

Big Commerce has built a fabulous eCommerce engine that integrates with many important providers of inventory, POS, shipping, tax calculation, etc. They offer all this at a reasonable fee. Their Achilles Heel is their website builder and they know it. The current WordPress headless play is probably a wise interim step... but LAMP is getting long in the tooth... Plan B.2?

Pros

Big Commerce have done an excellent job of identifying and integrating the components necessary for a very robust large scale online store. It is wrapped in a very inflexible templated front end that requires programming to break out of. They clearly recognized this shortcoming and have deftly pivoted to a headless model that tosses the client-side rendering to... WordPress.

Cons

The theming/template/programming model of native BigCommerce is an investment. It is a specialty that does not feel like a career investment, rather it is a commitment to be a Big Commerce partner/developer. I suppose that with a pool of large clients this might seem monetarily attractive, at the end of the pool with smaller clients and smaller jobs, customization work required will often exceed their needs or desires and even at the small business end of things, e-commerce websites have become content marketing tools as well as storefronts. The out of box BigCommerce sites just don't accommodate the rapid transformation required. A free WordPress plugin for headless BigCommerce machinery under the hood certainly addresses this... for now, but I see incredible advances in the flexibility and programming model of Wix. If (when?) they get that to scale to faster performance on larger datasets... look out World...
