### "Flexible, Scalable Platform for Complex Catalogs and Hybrid D2C + B2B"

March 14, 2026

5.0

We replatformed from WooCommerce, launched on BigCommerce Pro, and upgraded to Enterprise within our first year as early growth exceeded expectations. Day‑to‑day, BigCommerce has been stable and low maintenance, which was a noticeable improvement over the hosting, updating, and plugin‑management overhead we dealt with previously. The platform has also scaled cleanly with our operational needs without forcing us into architectural changes or heavy refactoring as we grew. On our Enterprise agreement, the trailing‑12‑month overage model was the hardest part to model; clarify how yours works, and if you’re pacing over your tier before renewal, a mid‑contract upgrade can be cheaper than riding rolling overages. While broader third‑party support for Multi‑Storefront/Multi‑Location and a more modern native search experience would be welcome, BigCommerce overall has been reliable, capable, and straightforward to grow with.

Pros

One of BigCommerce’s biggest strengths is its true hierarchical category structure. When we replatformed from WooCommerce, we evaluated BigCommerce Enterprise against Shopify Plus, and Shopify’s Collections simply couldn’t replicate our deep category/subcategory structure without relying on apps. BigCommerce supports this natively, which made SEO planning and catalog organization much cleaner for us. Another standout is BigCommerce’s native product customization capabilities. The platform lets you add required acknowledgements, collect customer input via text or choice fields, and use the Product Pick List to let shoppers add compatible accessories or components directly from a product page. For anyone selling modular or configuration‑heavy products, this built‑in flexibility is extremely useful and reduces the need for app‑based workarounds. The Promotions editor is also very capable. I once suggested adding the ability to cap a percentage-based discount by a dollar amount, and that functionality eventually became available, which helps for certain promotional structures. For B2B, BigCommerce’s pricing tools are practical and flexible. On Enterprise, we choose between Customer Groups, Price Lists, or the Promotions engine depending on what fits the scenario, as each tool serves a distinct purpose. We also like that we can run D2C and B2B on the same platform—one catalog and promotions engine, with B2B‑specific pricing/visibility where needed—without maintaining separate stacks. The app ecosystem is solid as well. Shopify still leads in sheer quantity, but BigCommerce generally has strong options in each major category, and what’s available tends to serve mid‑market needs well. Theme customization has also been approachable for us. Because the theming system relies on standard web technologies, the theme editor and Script Manager made it easy to add small JavaScript calculators, light CSS tweaks, and other front‑end adjustments using only basic coding skills and some help from AI—work that would have otherwise required hiring a developer. Support has also been reliable overall, and after we upgraded from Pro to Enterprise, the responsiveness and depth of technical investigations noticeably improved.

Cons

The built‑in AI copywriter isn’t particularly strong, so we rely on external AI tools for generating product descriptions. The biggest limitation for us is the lack of broader third‑party support for Multi‑Storefront and Multi‑Location. BigCommerce provides both features, but many OMS, ERP, and inventory systems still don’t integrate with them in a way that makes a single‑backend, multi‑storefront setup truly practical. The potential is there, but until the ecosystem catches up, we maintain separate stores. Another issue is the way BigCommerce presents its negotiated or preferred card rates with Braintree on the pricing page. The advertised rates look very attractive, but in practice there was no clear path to obtaining them. Documentation didn’t explain how qualification works, support redirected us to Braintree, and even after meeting the listed conditions, it became evident that the rates weren’t realistically accessible. We eventually negotiated with other gateways and moved on. BigCommerce’s newer BigCommerce Payments offering for non‑Enterprise plans lists rates that seem much closer to what merchants actually see in reality. On the search side, Semantic Search was announced for 2024 but still hasn’t materialized. Meanwhile, Shopify’s native search has improved significantly, so BigCommerce currently lags unless you use a third‑party search solution. BigCommerce appears more focused on agentic search initiatives and Feedonomics Surface, which doesn’t help onsite search relevance today.

Alternatives considered

[Shopify Plus](https://www.capterra.com/p/171845/Shopify-Plus/)

Reason for choosing BigCommerce

At the time we evaluated Shopify Plus, Shopify Payments couldn’t pay us out in both USD and CAD as a Canadian merchant, which was important because our site served both the U.S. and Canada. While they’ve since added multi‑currency payouts for certain Canadian stores, it wasn’t available then, and using a third‑party gateway would have triggered Shopify’s additional transaction fees. Shopify Plus was also considerably more expensive and we anticipated a higher ongoing app bill because several things we get natively on BigCommerce would require paid apps on Shopify. On top of that, we didn’t feel we could have achieved the same level of frontend quality, performance, SEO cleanliness, or overall flexibility without more customization work. In our view, Shopify’s main advantage was the sheer size of its app store, but when we compared everything else that mattered to us, BigCommerce offered much better value and fit.

Switched from

[WooCommerce](https://www.capterra.com/p/225601/WooCommerce/)[WordPress](https://www.capterra.com/p/131687/WordPress/)

We switched from WooCommerce because maintaining a WordPress‑based ecommerce stack had become too time‑consuming for a small team. Theme updates, plugin conflicts, hosting maintenance, and breakages were constant overhead. Even though our software costs have gone up since moving to BigCommerce, our business has grown significantly, and the platform removed a huge amount of technical friction. Not having to worry about updates, server issues, plugin compatibility, or babysitting the site has been worth the trade‑off, especially with the growth we’ve experienced.

### "Do your research and make sure your demo is thorough"

February 5, 2026

3.0

Less than spectacular. Whenever I need to make changes, it takes much longer than I think it should take. The links for help don't answer the question you are looking for and send you to additional links that still don't solve the problem

Pros

The customer facing website looks good. I like the scrolling banner that runs across the home page, although I wish you could add another image or two.

Cons

It is very difficult to manipulate the templates that are set. It is especially difficult to set up promotions. Often when making changes to one area, it removes or changes information in another area.

Overall, my experience with BigCommerce has been highly positive. The tool has an intuitive interface with exceptional features that makes eCommerce functions run with efficiency.

Pros

BigCommerce is features rich which ensures we we get the value for our money as it meets all our needs. The interface is easy to navigate so new users do not struggle with this tool. The learning curve is easy even for users with no technical skills.

Cons

There is nothing to dislike about BigCommerce. The tool runs smoothly without any hitches. I really like it.

### "Reliable platform that offers a good way to get your online store built. "

July 10, 2025

4.0

Very reliable, and offers a simple interface. I like how you can easily track orders and customers, and coupons are easy to set up. Links nicely with third parties (such as delivery partners, payment providers etc).

Pros

Easy to get started with - it straightforward to set up the eCommerce platform, and it integrates well with Sage Pay and Google merchant centre.

Cons

Pricing - when your sales pass a certain amount, it can become quite expensive. Also, customising themes can be difficult if you don’t have web design knowledge.

### "Great customization options and useful analytics"

April 8, 2026

5.0

Overall we've been very happy. We've recently reviewed all our options for redoing our website, and still decided BigCommerce was the best fit for us.

Pros

The ability to customise our website to suit a range of different products and markets. It also has great analytics.

Cons

The price is very high in comparison to other options, but it also is more suited to our needs. It also isn't as beginner friendly as other options we have explored.

Happy with customization opportunities, but there was a bit of a learning curve as a result. Overall, very happy we moved forward with BigCommerce.

Pros

Abandoned cart recovery, multi-channel selling, advanced native SEO tools supplement our reporting capabilities, real-time shipping quotes

Cons

For enhanced customization, it trades off simple interface. However, our team went through training before using the platform which helped. Premium themes are on pricier side.

### "Good Option for Growing Ecommerce Sites"

March 12, 2026

BigCommerce feels like a platform built for stores that are already thinking about scaling. It includes a lot of ecommerce features by default, which can be helpful in the long run.

Pros

The platform offers solid product management tools and good performance even with larger catalogs. It’s nice not having to rely too much on external plugins.

Cons

The interface isn’t the most intuitive at first, and it may take some time to get comfortable with all the options available.

### "Go big with BigCommerce"

April 18, 2026

4.0

BigCommerce has been an impressive ecomm platform. It offers a different set of features to competitors, and as such, has been an ideal solution. We have some complex product inventory requirements, and BigCommerce handled it.

Pros

BigCommerce is a comprehensive ecomm platform, with a great included feature set, such as advanced SEO, multi store front and multi currency support. It performs and scales well and doesn't charge for transaction processing when using a third party.

Cons

Not the easiest platform to use, but that is due to the rich feature set. Limited themes included. Pricing tiers are structured on your revenue, so you can be forced to move up.

### "It's been a nice long relationship"

May 10, 2022

5.0

Overall, it's been pretty smooth sailing. Customer service is ALWAYS there and trying to help the best they can. They never leave me in the dark. Way easier and faster site than dealing with Magento.

Pros

I have used Bigcommerce for over 8 years. Overall, I think it works better and at a more reasonable cost than other related platforms.

Cons

I have 1k parent skus with 11k child skus. It will not import my large spreadsheet. So if there is a major price change from my brands, it's impossible to import my vendor's .csv or excel sheet. We have to update each regular price and sale price one by one. Takes way too much time to permanantly discount items / sales too.

Alternatives considered

[Shopify](https://www.capterra.com/p/83891/Shopify/)

Reason for choosing BigCommerce

Shopify charges fees for every sale. Overall with all the apps you need to buy with Shopify, Bigcommerce had more features out of the box. I still had to buy 4-5 apps. But I would have had to invest much more money with Shopify. Which wouldn't be enough money left for me to operate the rest of my business.

### "BigCommerce is a great online store solution."

June 7, 2021

5.0

We have used BigCommerce for over 6 years, and it has proved to be a fantastic online store solution, offering a simple interface, every feature you need, ease of payment for customers, and simple integration.

Pros

Order management is the strongest point of BigCommerce, and that is exactly what you want from an online store. Integration is simple and accurate, reporting and analytics are comprehensive, and the scalable pricing structure is the cherry on top. An excellent product.

Cons

I really don't have any complaints about BigCommerce. Oh wait, I thought of one - Stop asking me to change my password every 3 months - it's annoying !

May 26, 2022

Having built out multiple bigcommerce sites I would have to say the experience has been a good one. We have not had any major issues with the platform and our clients are very pleased with the final results of their websites.

Pros

Very easy set up. Once you or your client chooses a theme it is a pretty straight forward process getting your store online.

Cons

I would say the thing I liked least is not having some sort of builder for basic web pages. Too much customization needs to go into creating custom category pages.

### "Easy to use but they didn't have my back"

July 22, 2021

4.0

At first it was great, but as they got bigger they didn't seem to value my business the same way and forced me to pay almost 3 times what I had agreed to. I was happy to switch to a competitor when I did.

Pros

I liked that it was very easy to figure out. It was updated regularly and laid out nicely. I built my first e-commerce store on my own using this software.

Cons

I kept hitting walls with what I wanted to do. Some of the features were limiting like "Options" and I kept hoping they would improved them. They also made a change to their pricing structure and took away Customer Groups on the plan I was on. It was $29/mo and then all of a sudden it was $79/mo. I wish they grandfathered me in. When I called to complain or work something out, they had a take it or leave it attitude... so I left it.

Switched from

[WooCommerce](https://www.capterra.com/p/225601/WooCommerce/)

I switched since BigCommerce changed my pricing basically taking away Customer Groups unless I paid $50 more per month. I felt a little ripped off and they seemed to not care when I called. I was happy that I switched.

### "Used to be a fan … this is so bad "

July 14, 2023

1.0

I had a Big Commerce site in 2012 that I absolutely loved. We left the platform for a while and came back in the end of 2017. For a while things were pretty smooth. However, Big Commerce recommended me to a developer to build our site. They charged me $40,000and built a fully custom site that only they could work on so that they could earn another $3000 to $4000 a month. This is actually a good part of my experience with Big Commerce . It was impossible to find anyone who knew how to work on the platform and all of the “preferred partners “did not know a number less than $40,000. Such a racket and a total scam. In 2020, I had all of the customizations removed and began to take care of the site myself. I was an enterprise client with dedicated level to support which was generally quite helpful. However, due to slower business from the pandemic, I really negotiated my rate in early 2023 to $1000 per month . apparently, that's not enough money to get decent support. They dropped me back to level one Support and often times the people I got new less than I did. I do not have the patience for that especially not paying that kind of money. I reached out to the \[sensitive content hidden\] and was told by him personally that they weren’t going to do anything to help me. So I moved my Store to Shopify Plus. By the way, I was able to fully build the Shopify plus store all on my own have never built a site before. The tools made it quite easy to make a site that was far superior to my Big Commerce site in

### "Good Until You Need To Integrate It With Other Software"

May 27, 2022

3.0

Overall, I like BigCommerce's eCommerce software, however I don't think it's for anyone that had a psychical store trying to start out online. If you are selling online only, it could be a good option.

Pros

Overall, for just only eCommerce, BigCommerce is great, and I have been using it for 10 years now. It is easy to use and customize, and has lots of great features (however you do have to pay for higher end features). No percentage fee is nice for smaller stores, but once you get to a certain scale, others offer no percentage as well with way more features.

Cons

The worst part about BigCommerce is their ability to integrate with outside software. Many small eCommerce stores are based out of a physical retail store, and there is NO easy, cheap, or even good way to integrate your in-store inventory with your BigCommerce inventory. For instance, if you use the popular Square POS in your retail shop, you have to pay an expensive 3rd party software for a janky, somewhat working system to that keeps your online inventory in sync with Square, so when you sell something in the store, it removes that stock online. BigCommerce refuses to take this issue seriously, which is unfortunate because I can't recommend it to anyone that has a physical retail store and wants to keep live inventory online.

### "A great platform to start a multi channels e-commerce business"

May 10, 2022

5.0

BigCommerce was our first e-commerce platform, it allowed us to easily sell on Amazon & eBay through their partner Codisto. It's a great start for any small business that is looking for an affordable multi channel solution

Pros

The price is really attractive and the fact that you'll receive a version of Codisto (multichannel integration tool) for free is quite pleasant when you are starting a new venture. I would advise anyone to give them a chance

Cons

Monthly fee on paid theme, you can always purchase a theme outside of their store but you won't get support on that. Maybe a one time payment is better for the customer in the long run

### "If you are serious about growing your business, there is no other platform to consider."

May 6, 2019

5.0

For the most part, BC is attentive and addresses our issues. Reps change more frequently than I would like and they are not very helpful. Most aren't there long enough to learn the position. The core staff and the support team are second to none. There is not one weak link on the support team. You will not understand how important this is until you need help from another provider and wait 30 minutes to talk to someone who knows less about the product than you and learned English as a second or third language.

Pros

BigCommerce Support is not only the best there for an e-commerce platform. It is the single best support compared to every provider I have ever used. They answer the phones quickly. The person who picks up the phone knows what he/she is doing. Calls never have to be escalated and the issue is (almost) always resolved. My issues are normally fixed within 10 minutes of picking up the phone to dial. BC doesn't waste your time. PCI compliance was a big part of why we moved. BC takes it all on. We no longer have to provide scan reports or do any paperwork. Consistent conversion rates - there are few ups and downs. I can depend on my site to be functional. Adding products, categories and landing pages is simple. 2 months after moving to BigCommerce I let my entire development team go. We no longer needed any of them. Training an employee to add products takes just a few minutes.

Cons

Some things seem to take forever to get done. 301 redirects are difficult to manage and a fix has been in and out of the works for years. Product page load times can exceed 1000ms. Mobile PageSpeed is big in Google's eyes and we are slower than average.

### "Ecommerce Platform with Great Customer Service"

April 16, 2020

4.0

In general, I am very satisfied with the product. It serves its purpose for a reliable and easy to set up ecommerce platform with lowmaintenance cost.

Pros

Although the platform offers a lot of features for an ecommerce business to be able to run daily operations and analyze data, my favourite part by far is the fact that it has a great customer service. Every time when there is an issue with the website or we have questions, we can chat with a representative from Bigcommerce. Their customer service is very reliable and knowledgeable. No waiting on the phone, no back and fort transferring between reps. Technical support is right there for you.

Cons

### "It's okay."

January 7, 2019

4.0

Pros

We moved from Shopify to Bigcommerce because Shopify lacked features that Bigcommerce had out of the box such as proper product categories, saved payments, one-page checkout among others. These features have worked well and our conversion rates went from 3% to over 10%. Bigcommerce is great for more complicated product catalogs with lots of categories and skus whereas Shopify is great for simple catalogs.

Cons

Bigcommerce continues to build out new features rather than fixing problems with current ones. Every week I hear about a new payment processor or some random feature that's built half-baked. I've been very, very frustrated at the lack of thought behind many features and their inability to fix simple problems. Their API's are a mess, with some of the API's passing all the data you need, and other's missing important data needed - so we're creating functions to call information that should be (and easily can be) included in the objects returned by the API. There is NO mobile application, even to check simple things like orders, which is the most ridiculous thing given we're in 2019.

### "An excellent hosting e-commerce platform with almost all enterprise features"

February 13, 2019

5.0

We have migrated our Magento 1 site to BigCommerce after ongoing frustration with Magento 2.3 extension quality and caching issues. We've achieved a lot in a 2 week period and launched in a month.

Pros

The stability of it is great. The admin UI is very easy to use and intuitive. It has advanced pricing controls and other B2B features. The templates are great and we really saved a lot of time with a customization. If you have strong e-commerce skills in house, I honestly believe you can be live in a month or two. We found ourselves solving lots of problems that we'd normally require a developer for. It's very robust if you can stay on its rails. There are a lot of plug-ins, although some are expensive with monthly subscriptions.

Cons

The standard shipping features are very lacking and basic, and the solution is to use a plug-in. Although a free account with the plug-in is provided, it's inadequate and a subscription ended up costing us hundreds of dollars a month. The shipping system is even inadequate for basic stores. It's also lacking some functionality like product priority within categories, and limits faceted filters to 12 which required us to re-jig a bit of stuff and remove some filters. So the merchandising can be limiting at times. We could also do with native support for SVG images, and a static block CMS. Support is slow and you can be waiting 2 days for a reply. So although it is easy to use, if you do hit a wall, you need to wait a while for support. However, even with these caveats, we still found it to be a better solution to what we were using.
