CEO Used the software for: 3-5 years ### "Great platform until you need to leave — no bulk export for text lessons" October 29, 2026 3.0 I escalated the issue through Support multiple times and specifically asked for a one-time raw extraction in any format — JSON, HTML, XML, CSV, database extract, anything usable. I was not asking Thinkific to build a migration tool or new product feature. After escalation to Technical Support, Thinkific told me there is no backend tool, admin export, or API option available to extract Text Lesson content and that manual copy/paste is the only method. I even reached out directly to Thinkific’s \[sensitive content hidden\] for help and received no response. That is the part future course creators should understand before committing heavily to the platform. If you author substantial original text directly inside Thinkific, make sure you maintain your own external master copies as you go. Do not assume you will later be able to export your written course content in bulk. Thinkific worked well for us while we were actively using it. But the lack of text-content portability has turned leaving the platform into a major manual recovery project, and if I'd known that before building out so much content and hosting four authors, I would not have chosen Thinkific. Pros Thinkific was easy to use for building and delivering online courses, and it worked well for us for years. The course builder made it simple to combine text, video, audio, PDFs, quizzes, and other materials in one place. It was also easy for multiple authors to contribute directly inside the platform without needing technical skills. Cons I was a longtime Thinkific customer and built approximately 50 courses on the platform with content from four different authors. We have copies of all of our videos, audio files, and PDFs. The problem is the text lessons that were authored directly inside Thinkific using the course-building tools Thinkific provides and encourages creators to use. When it came time to wind down the company and return each author’s intellectual property, I discovered that Thinkific does not provide a bulk export for Text Lesson content. Their recommended solution is to manually open each lesson and copy/paste the content into another document. That might be inconvenient but manageable if you have one or two small courses. At our scale, it is overwhelming. Five of our courses are 30-day challenges, which means more than 150 individual lesson pages to manually open, copy, paste, label, and verify — and that is only five of our approximately 50 courses. That might be really important for people teaching code or other products. Then I'm glad I choose this one because others take a % of income AND you have to wait longer for money. The course templates are a breeze to edit; users can easily see how to add and edit content, and the presentation is slick and professional. Cons Thinkific does not have an integrated email marketing feature, but users can connect MailChimp, et al., with Zapier. Cons Currently, the only way to mark courses as complete is by submitting a spreadsheet upload and it is quite manual and time consuming, considering we do this quite a lot. They have excellent customer support and they responded to me quickly even during busy times. I actually recommended them for a company that has recorded videos and could benefit from using a modern LMS to share their recorded lessons. Pros I think I like the idea of the software. There are alternatives. I think I picked Thinkific first because they have clear description about their software, seemed reputable and seemed like they have good customer service and responsiveness. Their website is nicely responsive for different screen sizes. Although the theme itself is limited, and you are on your own to customize it, I felt that the drag and drop choices for the editor covered everything I need. Cons There were critical limitations that I felt decreased the value of the software for my business. The first thing that made me feel uncomfortable is that the website you build for your business through their LMS software would publish to the public immediately as you save the changes. I look thoroughly through the website theme settings, but there was no way to keep the website as "password protected" or "private" before it is published. As a result, I felt I should hold on about sharing important details until I write the entire content of the website, then drag and drop the content for the layout, and then put the content. After that first issue, I felt less excited. There were other limitations that resulted in me losing interest. I didn't feel like I want to pay to customize my website with HTML and CSS. importing your own website website was not a convenient option. My courses were live online but their website had no way of sharing the time on the website based on the user local or system time. I would have to pay for their Pro plan and do it myself with javascript. I could look up and learn how to do it, but I didn't want to. I felt like the software was good for only recorded content. The price they were asking for was not convincing anymore. Slowly and slowly I lost interest. Finally, I saw that they charge a flat fee for each student plus their monthly fee, for any student after the 100th student. I decided not to move forward with them. Whenever I contact customer support because of a problem, which is several times a day, they "can't duplicate the issue" so they don't have a solution. The page load speed fails every test. When I contacted them for support on this issue, they recommend I have the site redesigned by a professional who could help with page load speed. I hired one of their "experts" to redesign the site, and her design does not look or feel any better than mine and also did not help with the page load speed so I'm out $40k for no reason. Pros I like that it is easy to use, it's easy to upload your course material and publish your course. Cons My main issues with thinkific include very slow page load speed (which kills SEO rankings), dysfunction in the assignment feature (specifically, when clicking "next page" on the assignments, it takes you back to page 1 and you have to start all over), inability to edit a course landing page (my course has been published for 4 years and the URL is out in google so I don't want to recreate and for some reason we can no longer edit the page at all), and problems with user experience (students not being able to load a page, etc) Review Source Becky M. Pros This is a platform built for courses, and as such, it does that incredibly well. If you are only looking for somewhere to sell courses and are most concerned with those looking great and being well built for your customers, then this is a great program. Cons I really wanted a platform that could handle more than just courses (ie, also selling digital downloads, memberships, and 1:1 coaching programs). Thinkific isn't made to do everything because they focus on doing one thing really well. If you're looking for a jack of all trades rather than a master of one, this probably isn't for you. I can find what I'm looking for with a little searching. I just think it could be displayed in an easier format, with larger headings or different colors used for main headings of sections. Pros I like that you can incorporate different file types into the platform. There are videos, documents, schedules, quizzes, and other files that are all able to be used on Thinkific. Cons It is hard to view items and the way they are posted sometimes makes it hard to find what you are looking for. Also, I am unsure if I am supposed to mark items as "done" in order to complete the module or not. April 9, 2019 5.0 No benefits realized yet as I just got my first course up and published. I have several courses written but finding the right software for me and my students was my Catch 22... never considered that would hold me back. I kept working on the courses... and finally, the solution was presented to me. I have tried so many different teaching platforms already and never actually published. Just wasn't confident in knowing the site well enough -- but in no time at all, I am published on Thinkific and so thrilled I made the leap. Finally! Pure FUN! Pros Thinkific is easy to use. Add a new Module, one click to add content, module after module. So easy! Better yet, I LIKE how it looks to the user. I LIKE how the site can look like mine -- not another platform. It does look different, but MY site name is on top, visible, so users know where they are immediately. I've tried others and never quite liked the look as I work with seniors who have retired... and wanted simplicity. This time I found just that. AND YET -- very functional, with every content option I'd like to add. Thinkific has a great Facebook group too. Very active and helpful, learned how others are doing their classes so gives me new ideas. Some groups were full of people whining about what the software didn't do or needed to be corrected... that didn't work for me either, yeah, picky picky! :) Cons I only had to ask Support one question while adding my first course. My only question was: how to add a manual student who paid me privately (or complimentary class) if they didn't purchase through Thinkific itself. I know its there, just chose to ask instead of searching! :) I didn't even use HELP pages to learn how to use it... it was pretty intuitive for me and I love that! Please don't think that means its not a fully integrated teaching service, it really is. They simply "got it" where the user (me, the instructor) and the other user (student) is concerned. Someone did the work to think about how both users will interact with the software. Kudos! While they are friendly and say they hope you are having a nice day, they do not answer questions (or apparently read email chains). There is no support for European customers I fed this back to them when I first signed up around 2 years ago and nothing has changed. I have given them all of the feed back given here but they do not take any action. Waiting at least a day for an answer is totally unacceptable. What makes it even more frustrating is that, after waiting for a reply, they ask for information that was already included in your original email (and then you have to wait another day for a response). It just seems as though they work at their convenience, not the customer's. And yet they are happy to take the subscriptions when they are not providing an adequate service. Pros I was so excited to find this product and thought it would be ideal for my needs Cons The software is not user-friendly. I was hoping that it would be more straightforward and my staff have also commented that is it not user-friendly. There is nobody to call when you have a query and can only email. It takes them a day to get back to you. And we are based in the UK and with the time difference, we have to wait at least a day for an answer. What makes it even more frustrating is that, after waiting for a reply, they ask for information that was already included in your original email (and then you have to wait another day for a response). I sent a query on Monday asking how to do something and the reply said 'see instructions below' and there were no instructions there. In the same email, they asked me to confirm the email address (which I had emailed them on and they had clearly not tried this). I responded right away and just got an email asking how they could help me! (They clearly had not read the email chain). It is now 9pm at night on Tuesday and will be at least Wednesday afternoon with the time difference until I may get a reply and actually proceed.
