Mistakes are always made, but Zenefits tries to rectify and solve problems instead of throwing their hands up and saying it's too hard. Pros What makes Zenefits most valuable to our business is the ease of onboarding new people and providing a 1 stop place for my HR department that is completely in the cloud and no need for reams of paper to be wasted. The PTO calendar and tracking is invaluable as well. Cons Zenefits started as a Benefits company with an HR platform, but has pivoted to providing Payroll as it's core business with the other add-ons. There is still some room for improvement on the payroll side and how to handle the customer service side of this. Operations Director Marketing and Advertising Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Zenefits review" January 24, 2025 3.0 It worked well initially and was our first HR/payroll platform integrated software so it taught us quickly what we did and didn't need. Ultimately wasn't the right fit for our team because of the lack of ability to adjust some of the templates, and the lack of customer service support. Pros It was easy to set up, and at the time we were a very small team with just one Operations person so the onboarding was convenient. Cons There was not much in the way of customization, and our staff didn't find it very user-friendly. Vacation requests were not intuitive and the payroll setup was clunky, we had to request help to adjust our payroll periods multiple times and cases were closed without being actually resolved. It gets the job done but I'd be open to new options. Pros Zenefits has gotten the job done in terms of payroll and paying out contractors when needed. And they handle payroll taxes and necessary payroll reporting to the government. Cons The cost is high for a small business who might not have needs for most of their features. And the service has been fairly slow. For example, it took me a month to get a new form of payment on file as my business credit card had expired. During that month I had to handwrite checks and could not use the service. We have spent 40+ hours easily setting things up. I can't disrupt our employees again with another switch. I woudl if I could. Pros I like the idea of what they are trying to accomplish...a hub for HR and payroll. They missed the mark because they created a product that doesn't flow and is very difficult to use. The customer service has a 3 day min wait. If I could leave, I would in a heartbeat. Filled with regret. Cons When you are trying to set up the core of your business and continue to function seamlessly, customer service should be available at all business hours. If you are lucky enough to get a calndly link, you can schedule, but there is usuallya minimum of 3 days to wait. This is so unacceptable. The product itself is clunky, disjointed and not at all intuitive. You have to go to different sections to see different things about an employee instead of clicking in tehri name and seeing everything related to their employment in one spot. Thet auto-approved our payroll on teh last day of teh pay cycle prior to teh day's end. That is crazy. I also really appreciated all of the resources for HR handbooks, job descriptions, performance reviews, etc. Customer service was great, and really flexible with some of my out of the box requests. Having our employees clock in via our ipad app was handy. The mobile features were rough at first, but are coming around nicely. Cons The templates for new contractors and new hires were rather lackluster. It was also a little clunky and almost overly simplistic to pay contractors. Tax prep wasn't the smoothest. The pricing has been fair, the service has lived up to expectations, and most importantly, everyone who uses it at my place of work shares the same mindset, more or less. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a decent HR platform, as I am sure it would not disappoint except for when it comes to the occasional technical glitch here and there, which I am sure applies to anything having to do with technology. Pros What I like most about this software is the layout in which all of its functionalities are presented. Whether it be payroll, benefit elections, or anything else relating to human resource necessities, Zenefits has what both the employee and employer are looking for when it comes to ease of use and variety of functionalities and features. I very much like that the service is offered on both a web browser as well as a smartphone app, which allows for on-location or on-the-go usage. Lastly, I find the pricing for such a great service to be very reasonable, and the method in which pricing is to be determined to be quite fair as well, (when compared to competing companies offering similar services). Cons As a whole, Zenefits is there for you when you need it and delivers up to expectations. However, if there was one thing that I believe should be somewhat stabilized, it would be the clock in and clock out feature on the mobile app, which at times might be a bit challenging to work with, as it sometimes freezes the phone screen, resulting in the need to restart the whole phone for it to begin working again. This happens on very rare occasions, but when it does happen, it is a bit inconvenient. Other than that one small aspect, there is not much else that is negative to report. Review Source LB LAURA B. You will sit on hold for literally hours until a rep answers. This has been my experience on multiple occasions. They are not good at heading off issues either. In January 2021 there was an issue where hours were not porting to payroll and payroll was due that day. As a user, I kept thinking what am I doing wrong, sat on hold for 3+ hours waiting for a rep, figured out a workaround only to find out it was a system issue. A simple email to administrators with the information and workaround would have saved me hours of work. Another current example is I have an employee who entered his SSN incorrectly into the system and now has a W2 that is incorrect. Customer Service has sent two form emails but zero information on what needs to be done and the timeline. Very frustrating to work with Zenefits especially when you have an issue that is time sensitive. Pros I like that I can keep my HR in one place online and the general onboarding of certain positions in our company with the template is easy and straightforward. Cons Time and Attendance is clunky to use accurately. There is an app for employees to clock in but it's easy for mistakes to occur. Onboarding is clunky too if you want to send an offer letter that is not part of a template and still have the new hire, say a manager with a negotiated salary, sign online. Reason for choosing TriNet HR Plus I believed their sales pitch that it was going to be easy and intuitive to use and that they had "a team" of people backing me up. There is no team. Perhaps this is because I am a small business and they are focused on larger customers. CEO Computer Software Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Awesome Software - Absolutely Awful Support" October 17, 2017 3.0 Gusto is by far the best payroll, and even if you go with Zenefits I suggest you use them for payroll. Do not let Zenefits convince you to switch over. Pretty much only their sales people are responsive/friendly and as soon as you pay, they disappear. If you are big enough to go with Workday, go with them (IIRC they require 12 employees). BambooHR has a decent option, but watch for the hidden fees. They're not really upfront on all the costs, and their stuff is complicated enough they require you to go through training to use it. I am REALLY hopeful that new management at Zenefits will finally clean things up, or Gusto will enter the full market of Zenefits and put them out of business. Gusto support is awesome, just don't leave Gusto in the middle of the year. They have a policy that you can't come back in the same year. Pros For a small business there is not anyone cheaper than Zenefits and they have much greater integration and overall HR flow management than pretty much anyone I could find. When everything works, Zenefits is a beautiful thing. Cons Zenefits support is absolutely horrible. If there was ANY competitor that was anywhere close to having what they have at anywhere near their cost, I would have left by now. Support makes me downright angry on a regular basis. They don't read your questions and try to answer a different question, they take two or more days to respond (and there is no phone support), they tell you they'll call you back and do not, they give you wrong information over and over again. Almost no one who works there has any clue what they are doing, and their software messes up sometimes. The combination of the two has been a nightmare. I am constantly wondering if I'm actually saving time by using them, or if all the time I save is eating up with my many hours of arguing with support. Review Source Will F. If you can live with having no number to call, or at least, not a number that take you to a human who can answer your questions, then the features and software are solid. The pricing is what you would expect based on the features. Pros This SaaS has tons of features and can really help a small business get over those HR hurtles, although it won't replace the most valuable assets that a in-the-flesh HR person brings. Adding their payroll integration was a big win since our company was using a 401(k) admin that required manually keying in EVERYTHING back when we used intuit for payroll. So props for that! Cons OKAY, hear me out. The on-boarding process is unacceptable. I wouldn't be surprised if half of their potential client base ended up BACKING-OUT during on-boarding. I mean, it takes 2-4 weeks, you'll already be looking a bill on your credit card, and to make matters worse, the only staff that have a phone number are SALES PEOPLE! This is the first HR platform that I have used that is an app. I am easily able to track my hours, PTO and it is very user-friendly. Even someone who is not great with technology would easily be able to navigate this app with little to no training. Pros I like that it is an all-encompassing app. You don't have to jump from multiple windows to get pertinent information. I also really like how transparent it is to track each employee's time worked. It doesn't leave any guesswork. Cons I don't like how you aren't able to directly download your insurance cards. There is an option on the app so I am unsure if it is a feature that is disabled for the specific company I work for. Pros Before I joined MAX, I did not know software like Zenefits existed. This software is intuitive, easy to use and makes employee onboarding, separation and benefits management easy to do. It completely eliminates the mounds of paper that I used to accumulate for new hires and employees. In fact, I liked it so much that I recommended it to my former employer and they are now using it as well. I also had an incredible Benefits Advisor who always seems to have an ability to answer my crazy questions with efficiency and extreme patience. Cons While many things about Zenefits are absolutely amazing, the benefits we currently have (we are a small company) are probably not the best option for our employee base, size and age. I believe that the change Zenefits has made to focus on software and outsource benefits to OneDigital may resolve this challenge. And we have also grown, so that should help with pricing as well. I've had a lot of trouble uploading receipts and processing claims for my FSA. I would recommend it for everything except their healthcare management. Pros I love the time off tracker. It's super easy for me to submit time off requests, leave a reason why and the type of time I'm requesting. I can see how many hours I've requested this year and how many I've used. As a manager, it's also very easy for me to look at the requests made from my employees. Cons There is absolutely no help when submitting a healthcare claim. I have an FSA and have to submit receipts sometimes. Once I submitted one that apparently the Zenefits team couldn't open. It was rejected without a reason and all I got was an email saying I needed to submit a receipt (when I already had.) I submitted again not knowing the real issue and was rejected again. I finally had to contact support to figure out the reason why it was rejected. This happened again when I didn't realize I had gotten a credit card receipt instead of an itemized receipt from my doctor. A one sentence message from Zenefits on what was missing would have saved a ton of time and headaches. Cons I have trouble verifying my email to my account after switching emails from the personal to professional address.
