Pros: At this moment, I am struggling to think of anything positive to say about my Act! experience. Both my boss and I have had problems since we bought it. I have lost entire days' worth of sales time on the phone with their tech support trying to fix issue after issue. And to make matters worse, they keep telling me to give them more money if I want better, faster, more competent customer service. All I want is for the program to work correctly and do what they promised it would do!

Cons: This program is seriously glitchy, and the customer service experience has been bad. I have spent countless hours on the phone trying to get issues resolved. And to add insult to injury, they keep telling me that if I want better customer service and faster, more professional support I need to give them more money. If you believe in your product then, stand behind it and fix it. My boss and I have spent enough time (and money via lost sales revenue) dealing with Act's technical issues already, so I wish they would stop telling me we need to shell out more. After two days on the phone with them, having been escalated to their Level 3 support guy, my Outlook started to have problems immediately after hanging up with him. I have never had a single problem with Outlook since I started using it. Over the last two days, three different tiers of tech support have remotely accessed my laptop, gone into my Outlook as administrators, and messed around with it. Though they managed to fix the mail merge issues I was initially having with Act!, they clearly messed up my Outlook along the way. Now they claim it is a complete coincidence that Outlook started sending me error messages the moment I hung up with their top tier tech guy. They keep telling me the problems are not related, it is solely the problem of Outlook, they are not experts in Outlook, and I should call Outlook's tech support for help. Clearly, it is not a coincidence or unrelated. And clearly, they are confident enough in their Outlook expertise to go into my program and mess with it. And as tech support for a software program that works with Outlook, they should be trained and qualified to work with Outlook in the first place. I have asked repeatedly to have their top tier guy call me back. He knows what he did, so he should be able to track down his mistake and fix it. But they keep saying they can't do that without me shelling out more money. As if all of that wasn't enough, during my last conversation with their support, I had to force the rep to stop trying to get me off the phone and to fix the new problem that had cropped up with Act! just today: the loss of my email history. It took her close to an hour, and she finally discovered that my email history was now gone from Act! because one of the three techs who has remotely accessed my computer over the last two days accidentally replaced my database with a demo database. And even in light of that, she still tried to say that the issue with Outlook had nothing to do with anything their tech staff did. She continued to insist it was all just a coincidence. I told her I felt the time had come to talk to a supervisor, and I asked her to put one on the phone. After placing me on hold once again, she finally came back and said a supervisor was unavailable, and one would have to call me back in 10 minutes. It ended up taking close to an hour to hear from him. He did finally fix the Outlook problem, but when I asked him what I should do if the error messages come back in an hour or two, he said I had to start all over again from the bottom. The whole routine: wait on hold, start with a low-level tech, slowly work up the ladder, all of it. That or pay the fee. The next day, the Outlook error message came back! And I had to lose that day as well trying to get them to fix it. I spoke to my boss, and he said the same thing happened to him a while back, where they tried to blame Outlook. So my boss said he started a conference call with the Act! tech guy and the Microsoft tech guy on the phone at the same time, and lo and behold, the problem turned out to be with ACT, not Microsoft.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would look at other software altogether. Considering all the time, effort, and problems we have had, if we could do it all over again, I don't think we would choose ACT for our business.

Pros: There is absolutely nothing I like about this software.

Cons: Zero functionality. It can't pull any reports that are meaningful. When I think I can pull a report that is meaningful, I realize the data isn't even correct. It has almost no dynamic features; for instance, it can't update data by pulling it from another source; it has to be manually changed, which leads to errors. Also, Act! web premium only works if you have a really high quality internet connection. For example, we have 100MBPS internet; however, the speed is very inconsistent, which causes the Premium web version of Act! to constantly crash every time the internet slows down, while any normal web app would continue to load, or try to load, or just slow down. But Act! doesn't have that functionality; it just crashes, becomes unresponsive, and doesn't save any of the data you just input. When you restart your browser, it makes you sign in again. Also, almost no functionality is available on the web app; you can't delete contacts on the web version; you cannot import anything into the web version, and you can't manipulate any data. You can only input completely new data. It's literally awful. Contacts don't link well with groups or 'companies.' If you have seven people working for the same company and that company moves offices. If you change the address to that company, you have to individually change those seven people who work there. But the worst feature is the importing tool. You can't import in any 'advanced' way at all unless you pay for an importer tool, which you can't be sure will work for you. When talking with our third party Act! customer service person, I asked if I could try the import tool to make sure it did what I want before I bought it, or if I could have him try it for me to make sure it worked, and he said "No. There is no way to provide that service." When asking a simple question like, "So your input tool didn't find the duplicate contacts and just imported 700 duplicates. Is there a way to delete the duplicates all at once? Because all I see is an option to delete the duplicates one by one?" they told me there was no way to do it but that they would charge me to have them delete them for me. And I was quoted at an over 50 hour project quote, for something that took me one minute to do. So I just restored my backup file and started over. Also, I purchased a duplicate removal tool that was developed by a third party software company, and I thought it would work great, but it turns out that half of the contacts in the system had been uploaded with their full name as one fiedl and the other half with their first middle and last name as different fields. There is now way to differentiate this in ACT because it displays them the same way, so it merged all of the John's into one John contact. So again, I had to restore to a backed up database. The Swiftpage integration is awful. The only way I am able to use Swiftpage to any success is to export every single email, name, and address in Act! into an Excel spreadsheet, remove any duplicates, sort by region or the way I want to set up groups to email blast in Swiftpage, go to the actual swiftpage6.com website and upload the spreadsheets into Swiftpage manually. The Swiftpage email marketing HTML editor is also pretty bad. You can write beautiful HTML to display a great email, but Swiftpage mutilates the code in ways no one could ever understand. I am a professional coder - javascript, html, css - and it takes me hours, sometimes days, to design a marketing email that displays correctly in any sort of email client. In fact, it doesn't even ever look great when it's done, even after all the hard work. I would highly recommend any other email marketing company other than Swiftpage. I was on hold with a Swiftpage rep once for over three hours to find out why my email blast which was supposed to be sent by 10AM was still in the queue by 7pm. It actually didn't go out till almost midnight, and we had a 3% open rate, when we normally have a 15% open rate with other email marketing software. Please, please please do not buy this. With a database as important and large as mine, it's going to be extremely hard to switch to another software without major delays in service. The company has used it since 2002, and there is a lot of important data that needs to be imported into to a new system. It's going to cost a lot of money to do, and we will do it, but I just pray and beg that no one else ever has to be in the same situation that I am in if they don't have to be.

Recommendations to other buyers: If you are a small business looking for a cheap database software, I would recommend looking into Microsoft Access 2013 over Act!. It has a web app developer; it actually writes the web app for you. You can then share it with anyone on your network (anyone at all that works for you or with you), and they can open your database in a browser. I'd also recommend Microsoft Dynamics, which is more expensive, but it has a ton more functionality and seamless integration to other MS office software and has a very modern sleek look and feel. And then there are the best CRMs I've worked with, like Oracle's Siebel, but it's just way too expensive for any medium to small business.

Pros: None that I can think of...over our old ACT versions.

Cons: We are a long time user of Act with 64000 contacts, and thought about an upgrade and tried the newest software. Connection to ACT did not work, called customer service which took DAYS to respond, and only with trivial solutions or told us out browsers were inadequate. We cannot use cloud based software, as many of our sales persons need to travel and out of internet on the road. We asked about purchasing a copy for local server use, and they STILL have not called back.

Uses alot of memory and crashed the test computer a couple of times.

I reviewed the posts, and many are favorable, but their usage is very different than ours. Most of the positives come from short time users who have no other experience. If you have alot of contacts, doubt if this will work for you.

Overall: We put a local copy on each of their computers and sync to the master database. Since our equipment needed an upgrade I signed up for a trial of the newest cloud based system. It did not work, would not load on our trial computers and was totally unreliable. I called customer service who took DAYS to get back to me, and by then, we had pulled it off the test machines. We have 64000 contacts, and the Act Consultants tell us that is sketchy to transfer that many contacts to the newer systems. I am stuck with the older software, but that's ok, it works flawlessly.

Pros: I very much appreciate the degree of customizability of fields. This allows relevance for the type of data I need to collect, store and utilize.

Cons: I started with ACT! when they first opened and used them for many years. Developed a whole recruiting "database" because of customizability, but the program was a memory and speed hog. Took a 5-year, personal sabbatical, then signed up for free trial. I have never had so many difficulties with any software program as I have with ACT! I had expected great new developments, but found that the cloud-based program conflicted with my preferred browsers; the computer-based program was very unstable, with constant errors, shut-downs, and functions that were just not working properly. It has gotten increasingly unstable. Also, today it is necessary for a CRM to be compatible with other marketing programs. The ACT! 18 has very little compatibility. A minimum requirement for it's touted e-mail marketing program is that it would be compatible with gmail - it is not. My hopes of using this program have been dashed - I'm so disappointed!

Recommendations to other buyers: The reason you need a CRM is for building a loyal tribe of customers. Collecting contact information is only valuable if it can be used to connect with your potential and actual customers. Find a CRM system that truly allows you to utilize marketing software to build a relationship with the customers of your various market niches. Also, to do successful marketing campaigns, you need to track your contacts responses with metrics. ACT! has very little capability to do this effectively. Choose another CRM system; one with stability; flexibility; compatibility with email and marketing programs; and local, responsive customer service.

This is the worst CRM ever! I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy.

Pros: It is easy to use when it actually works. I receive emails advising my current version is expiring quite often so it keeps me informed regularly.

Cons: The syncing feature doesn't not always work between the different platforms that we have in our office. In an office of Sales Reps, we need a CRM that will sync in real time but sometimes this CRM won't sync for an hour which makes it difficult for us to schedule appointments for our Sales Reps.

Overall: It is easy to use when it is working correctly.

Hi there Angela,

Sorry to hear that you've had a poor experience with Act! I understand where you're coming from, and you're right that while using our remote database synchronisation feature can allow for very flexible office/out-of-office set ups, it does remove the 'real-time' sync capabilities.

Did you know that our Act! Premium Cloud service allows you to access you data (hosted by us) in real-time over the internet from anywhere in the world?

We really appreciate your feedback, and we're committed to make improvements across the board with every release! I really hope we can restore your opinion of our software with some of the improvements we've got planned in the future!

Pros: Nothing - this program and all it's components is sold from the sales level as the answer to all of your business needs... but you have to run your business very specifically in order to make sure it works the way they want it to. No macs, you must have dedicated workers to spend their entire days creating ad campaigns and updating the information - because if my sales team tried to do it - we would never get any sales work done.

Cons: Lag time is HORRIBLE. Customer service is lacking. Updates - haven't seen any improvement in the 8 years i've been using it. the 'solution" for not being Mac compatible (which is laughable in 2018) - is to use the Cloud version on their server - it's seriously the most horrible thing and biggest waste of time. I would much rather create my own manual spreadsheets in google docs to organize my client database.

Comments: I really wish someone cared enough to see how much I have called and say hey I am sorry you are having so many issues and then actually solve the problem.

Pros: I have used it for twenty five years and it has been my source for CRM. I liked how it worked when it was on my machine locally (it currently resides on my server but something causes it to go out)

Cons: I have spent 60 hours on the phone with customer act customer support because from Premium v18-20 I have had nothing but problems. It throws errors daily. When they fix it, it breaks again within a week. To get a level two tech scheduled, which seems to be the only tech that can handle my issues took me 25mins. Then I have to wait a day for them to call me. Then on average two computers take about 3 hours total to get up and running and then it breaks again. I am about ready to go back to paper.

Pros: We have used ACT! for many years with success but sadly after the newest upgrade this is no longer the case. All of the features we use are either hard to find, don't work the same, or no longer exist. We have had no success with getting help on these issues and get general answers or are directed to use the online/ self help articles to find out how to resolve the issues. I am not in IT!, I have a degree in Accounting, I do not want to nor do I have time to fix issues that weren't broken previously. When you have features that work and you have clients that use them DON'T change them - NO need to re-invent the wheel.

Cons: Horrible Support, Very bulky and difficult to now use! Constantly times out. If you have hours to sit on the phone with customer support when you call them then this is the perfect product for you!

Recommendations to other buyers: Make sure the Support offered by the software you chose covers things like the issues that will arise during upgrades. Make sure the choice you make will integrate with your accounting software. ACT! does not integrate with QuickBooks, so if that is the accounting software you use you will be out of luck there.

Comments: Feel like swiftpage is a poorly run company and doesn't care about the consumer!

Pros: . Ease of use if it works. Could be a good product if there was good service and the product was ready for release to the customer. Too many times they release a version and there are too many bugs to deal with.

Cons: Act doesn't care about customers. Hard to understand techs. Long wait times. Act on desktop was better. It worked for the most part. The cloud version should not have been released. Sub par product. Been with act since 1994. Put up with all the updates and changes. To me the product has gotten worse. Don't buy the cloud version

Comments: Tech support is transferred out of the US and customer care is useless. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAM OR SERVICE. THEY WILL NOT REFUND ANY MONIES PAID. WILL BE INQUIRING ABOUT TAKING LEGAL ACTION FOR DAMAGES OF LOSS OF TIME AND DEALS.

Pros: Prior versions of ACT integrated well with Outlook. The newest version on the surface appears to work but does not.

Cons: ACT upgrades its web services and does not notify its user until after you are no longer able to sync. Upgrade no longer syncs properly and reinserts cleared activities repeatedly each time so if you sync 5 times you will have 5 of the same activity.

Comments: There are 100 other CRM Software Companies who offer way better service and product for this price.

Pros: The only good thing about this software is you can customize the fields to cater towards the specific information you desire.

Cons: CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIBLE!! Nobody you can speak with speaks English, and if you call the sales office, all they want to do is transfer you to tech support. The wait times are always 30 plus minutes to speak with someone. I have never in my entire life done business with company with such poor customer service. You cannot rely on them to help you with anything, especially if you are trying to get something done in a quick manor. The sales people are just as lazy s the customer service employees.

Pros: Nothing! Salesman consistently misrepresented features and functionality. So many problems, it's hard to enumerate. Their E-Marketing module sounds great, but it DOES NOT WORK because Act! does not support SSL. They send emails via a port that nearly ALL ISP's block! They told me I could get around this by using Outlook, which I did not have. So, I purchased Outlook 2013, only to find that it did not import opportunities/prospect into Act! They then told me "Oh, you should have purchased Outlook 2007. That would have worked". Are you kidding me???

Cons: Act! has a form generator for you to embed a "Contact Us" form into your website, which I did. This way, is someone goes to your website and fills out your form, you can go to Act! and click "Get Leads" and all of those inquiries will come in as "Contacts". I did this and tested it. It seemed to work, so I launched a 2 month Email campaign from my database of 16,000 previous customers. After my campaign, I was shocked that I had absolutely 0 inquiries. I went back to the form on my website to re-test the form and found that it DID NOT FUNCTION! They could fill it out, but could not "submit"! I'm FURIOUS!! How much money have I lost??

Recommendations to other buyers: Realize that Act! used to be such a GREAT software. I used it religiously back in the '90's. I recommended it to so many people, who also loved it; but this new version by Swiftpage is far from ready-for-primetime. Their sales team misrepresents, their support team is, at best, extremely hard to understand and, at worse, comatose. Please don't make the catastrophic mistake I did in trusting your company's sales and contact management to them.

Pros: I've been using ACT! since it came out in the 90's. I loved what Sage brought to it. Now that I have my own marketing agency, I've been struggling with the implementation for five clients. The best feature is the offline remote capabilities for clients who don't yet trust the cloud. I can still access/control their data and run their campaigns, export data and get fantastic reports! (Opportunity & Contact Reports are first rate!)

Cons: * The new "India" customer service is absolutely terrible! When I need Act! support, I literally block off 2 hours at a time so I can get something done. I'm a pretty tech savvy gal, I pity those who aren't and need help. * Customizations are a joke.... In the old ACT! we could customize all our screens, now it's very very limited. * The new Act!emarketing is terrible! Since Swiftpage conversion, our delivery has dropped significantly, our opens have plummeted. Reports are painful to use or find what you are looking for.

Recommendations to other buyers: DON'T = If you aren't already an Act! lover, keep looking. I have a couple of clients on Pipedrive - and I love the simplicity and cost. It integrates with other online apps via Zapier (ie: QuickBooks, Mailchimp, Jotform, etc...). For my clients on ACT! where we absolutely require the true drip email piece that SageSwiftpage got right..... these guys broke it (and my heart), and not really willing to pay outrageous amounts for this feature that every smart CRM should be doing.

Pros: It is somewhat easy to use the basic features and get familiar with it.

Cons: First, you will find out the hard way that Act is not compatible to office 64 bit. So non of the syncs with outlook 64 bit work. The promises that it will be up and running for 64 bit in a month has not come true. I am waiting for this since June 2015. No reliable updates on this issue were provided through several inquiries. The upgraded software is also no longer supporting my scanner, so it is now a big hassle to import business cards into the system. The online client is extremely slow. You need to off-line client as well to be able to work efficiently. If you need support, the customer service department is completely unresponsive. If you are lucky to hear back from them (you may be better off playing the lottery!), be prepared to tell them what internal steps they need to take to resolve your technical issues. Oh yes, technical issues - lots of them. It took forever to get them resolved. With one issue resolved, another issue arises. After 5 month of trying to use the search feature on my mobile applications (iphone/ipad) I am giving up...

Recommendations to other buyers: If you don't want to waste your time and money - stay away from it. Other products may be more expensive, but you get what you pay for. I am now dealing with the hassle to transfer all data into a new software...

Comments: We do not use ACT as a sales CRM we use it for contact manager. We have have hundreds of thousands of records but the software could not be slower...! Recommend getting something else as we're trying to find something else!

Pros: If you have a small business and will not need to hold very many records ACT may work for you. Easy and simple to use.

Cons: How much time do you have... We hold hundreds of thousands of records and ACT can not take the load. It takes 5 minutes to look up one person! Hours to upload new data!!! Terrible for what we do!

Pros: My experience with Act! dates back to 1992. Just like everyone else here, the older versions were better and much more reliable. Instead of bashing Act! some more, I'd like to focus on Swiftpage. For them trying to get us all to use their product to help us sell more, they seem to have forgotten the easiest and most lucrative sale is to a current customer. If you have an older version of Act! (more than 2 upgrades old), they treat you worse than a new customer as you are no longer eligible for upgrade pricing. You have to pay full-price just like someone new to the product.

Cons: I still like Act! because of its pricing and basic functionality, but I will never upgrade because of the vendor. They take out some functionality (like integration with Outlook and Office) only to charge you more to get it back in the next version. I'm looking for a new CRM.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would recommend not buying Act!

Comments: I bought the license in October 2016 for one year. $. Every month they "update" their system which causes 2-3 hours of downtime every single month. Sometimes it takes 3 hours to get the company's tech division in Chennai India. In Chennai, they have a lot of storms and it knocks their power out frequently. Stay away.

by Swiftpage on March 27, 2017

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for your honest feedback. We are striving to improve our procedure for rolling out updates to our Act! Premium Cloud servers to minimise service interruptions in future. We realise downtime is the last thing our customers need. Thank you for your patience on this.

While we do have part of our technical support team in India, we also have technical support centres in the UK and the US. The time at which calls come in, and general availability of technicians affect where calls are routed.

We have an online ticket form where any issues can be raised, and immediately assigned to the most suitable team. Submitting tickets this way will help you avoid any queues on the phone lines.

Comments: I would not recommend the purchase of the product to anyone, whether an individual or company. If you are willing to spend additional funds for their service/support fee from the start just to get the product to work, then this is the product for you. The "customer service" group is basically another sales arm to sell you online service/support.

Pros: Long time user (20+ years) of previous versions and had few issues. The only thing I liked about this version was the reputation from previous use of the older versions.

Cons: Not sure how good the product actually is. It never worked. Absolutely no support from day 1 unless you are willing to contract with them on a monthly or annual basis. The product didn't work when loaded and can't use it the way it is. Won't do anything about it from a support standpoint. Never saw a company that had no intentions of supporting it 1 second after purchase. Would not return email or calls once the credit card went through.

Pros: I have no idea about the vendor, but there is absolutely nothing that I like about ACT.

Cons: When I enter things under one contact, it consistently jumps to another and saves information in the wrong places. If I try to scroll, it jumps to a different section and doesn't keep the search I was just on. If I go back to a window, I have to start over from a default view instead of returning to the view I was on. It runs slow. I much preferred the earlier version, although I didn't care for it, either.

Recommendations to other buyers: I would recommend finding a CRM that works and takes into account that UI and UX are everything and that it absolutely needs to save information under the entry you are on rather than suddenly putting it under some arbitrary/random one which this program does all the time.

Comments: I have used Act 2.0 (DOS days), Act 2000 and Act! 6. I still use Act! 6 and it does all that I need and more. It loads fast, and runs smoothly at 1650x1080 on Win XP Pro quad core 2.4 (old cpu, with 3 GB of RAM). The whole system (using Outlook 2007 and Word 2003, Outlook not linked) runs fast and smooth. Act 2013 trial was a major disappointment. Takes ages to load and has slowed my machine to a crawl. I'm just going to keep on with version 6 (hasn't needing any patching since their last patch, anyway) on an XP machine and when XP is no longer supported, I'll just trust to my appliance and software firewalls, AV etc to keep me up and running. This is a far better solution than Act 2013.

Comments: I have been using a succession of versions of ACT! software for a number of years to track my personal life. All went fairly smoothly until Sage entered the picture. Since then, the bugs have become more frequent and the accessibility and quality of technical support progressively worse. This evening I reached the end of the trail. The ACT! 2011 software refuses to open the database I've been using for over two years, and most recently three days ago, because it claims I'm not the owner. The technical support pages on the website tell me that a single-event contact with a human being will cost me $99, for software which the company will no longer support at all in another six months.

Pros: There's nothing I like about this product.

Cons: The program does not work consistently; the software deletes random data; the database just creates duplicate entries for some of the records. Although the manual seems thick, detailed, and thorough, it leaves off pieces of important instructions, and you are forced to call them. We are not trying to export all of our data, and it won't let you export the notes and history unless you pay extra for that.

Recommendations to other buyers: I am a realtor. As reluctant as I am to go back to our previous system, I think it is the most consistent.

Pros: It was easy to upload all of our customers to Act.

Cons: It does not sync the way I thought it would with our accounting software. I wanted to start using it immediately but had to keep flipping back and forth to our accounting program (Peachtree) for information regarding a customer. All I need is a simple way to track when I make a call, notes, when a customer last ordered, and the amount of the last order.

Recommendations to other buyers: It's a very complicated system. Using an Excel report and Yellow Pad is faster and more efficient.

Comments: Worst CRM application out there. We have a networked version with 8 users. We have spent hundreds of hours trying to just update the software (still having problems), hundreds of hours trying to get reports to look correct (most of them we gave up on and just end up with poorly formatted reports), and on one machine ACT will not properly duplicate a contact record.
