Pros 1\. Smokeball is an "everything" platform. We realized we were only using the other softwares for billing/invoicing, but found little use for them otherwise. Smokeball, on the other hand, is much more versatile. We track our to-dos there, create workflows, assign tasks/projects to others at the firm (it avoids the back-and-forth internal emails), share our draft documents with client through a secure portal, and much more! 2. If you are a real estate transactions law firm (as we are), Smokeball is the only platform specifically designed for that practice area. We love that it automatically calendars deadlines, has templates built in, and otherwise automates much of the closing process for us (and avoids costly mistakes such as missing a deadline). Cons 1\. Cost (yup, it's one of the more expensive options you'll find out there). But when evaluating options, the thought process should be whether you will save some time by implementing the features of the software. And if so, a few extra bucks monthly is well worth it. 2. A little glitchy at times. We sometimes would create an invoice but would not be able to load it or send to a client until the next day. I have no idea why this happens, though it hasnt been a big issue for us. 3. Requires you to invest a lot of time to set up to automate your documents and learn how to modify them as you go. Pros I like how Smokeball will draft legal documents for you and keeps all of my files organized in one place. Cons I wish Archie was a better AI source. I have had problems with it. It does not do a great job of summarizing deposition transcripts. I find ChatGPT to be more helpful. I feel like I have an entire admin staff at the ready. Pros My priority was to automate documents and no other software seemed able to do so without lots of pain. Smokeball has its roots in document automation! Imagine how surprised and happily stunned when I clicked on Forms and my letterhead with Client address just popped up! If this is how good Smokeball is out of the starting gate, I can't wait till for more. Plus, the tutorials, recorded training are easy and every single time I call Support, the staff is exceptional. Countless reassurances that I don't need to rush. They are as excited working there as I am using the product. Simply amazing. Cons Billing is tricky to begin with but, as I said, the support staff makes it easy to get going. Everything becomes so intuitive - the software anticipates your needs and has the next step already built in. The designers are experienced in law and technology, but also in interface logic. I enjoy being able to find a human when needed and the responsive of needing templates is good. Pros The total bundle of CRM billing, and document drafting. In addition to the aforementioned, the updates and improvements continue to develop with advancements in technology and the law. Cons The cost of attorney licenses. moreover, the support staff licenses are nearly cost prohibitive. I have not hired support staff due to the cost of the support staff license. Another great feature is I can arrange any type of file I want with certain folders and do not have to worry about unnecessary default folders constantly. Cons I wish I had something more detailed but this dislike falls on me as well. I wish I could understand the tutorials a little better or if there was a true step-by-step guide or "Smokeball for Dummies" on how to set up templates. My absolute Favorite: The ease of use of integrated Infotrack - love the fact that filed documents go into the client file automatically. Cons Integration with Family Law Software has issues when you need to update it, but it doesn't let you know when it's time to update it. May 28, 2025 4.0 I am a customer from 2018, so I am a long time user. They used to create documents for you but ended that service, otherwise I find the product very useful. Pros Helps keep me organized. I like that I can save attachments right into the file. I like that it makes emailing easy. The most surprising great feature is that it can combine documents into a pdf and automatically create a table of contents. Cons The billing module is generally very difficult to use. I like that we don't have to "recreate" certain documents, letters and pleadings. Pros Organization; ability to create documents, letters, etc by using templates, keeping track of calendar, Cons Not easy to create reports for specific issues, i.e. list of new lawsuits filed. Inability to use previous document for a new matter, cannot "switch" matters like before to save new document. Cannot incorporate "workflow" dates into calendar. We use workflow to monitor dates/tasks leading up to trial, these workflow dates do not go into events, so I have to create the workflow, take physical notes and manually put the dates into the events. They're also shown on the Daily Digest widget, which is printable. I have been a real estate paralegal for 25 years and the functionality that smokeball provides has allowed me to manage twice the file count as a paper system allows. There are other software programs that function to a smaller degree, but none are as versatile and broad as Smokeball. Pros Task management and email and document integration.
