Partner Legal Services Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "SmallLaw Review" November 29, 2020 5.0 Overall, an excellent software and definitely worth considering for your law firm, especially if you handle real estate transactions. Pros 1\. Smokeball is an "everything" platform. We realized we were only using the other softwares for billing/invoicing, but found little use for them otherwise. Smokeball, on the other hand, is much more versatile. We track our to-dos there, create workflows, assign tasks/projects to others at the firm (it avoids the back-and-forth internal emails), share our draft documents with client through a secure portal, and much more! 2. If you are a real estate transactions law firm (as we are), Smokeball is the only platform specifically designed for that practice area. We love that it automatically calendars deadlines, has templates built in, and otherwise automates much of the closing process for us (and avoids costly mistakes such as missing a deadline). Cons 1\. Cost (yup, it's one of the more expensive options you'll find out there). But when evaluating options, the thought process should be whether you will save some time by implementing the features of the software. And if so, a few extra bucks monthly is well worth it. 2. A little glitchy at times. We sometimes would create an invoice but would not be able to load it or send to a client until the next day. I have no idea why this happens, though it hasnt been a big issue for us. 3. Requires you to invest a lot of time to set up to automate your documents and learn how to modify them as you go. Pros I like how Smokeball will draft legal documents for you and keeps all of my files organized in one place. Cons I wish Archie was a better AI source. I have had problems with it. It does not do a great job of summarizing deposition transcripts. I find ChatGPT to be more helpful. I feel like I have an entire admin staff at the ready. Pros My priority was to automate documents and no other software seemed able to do so without lots of pain. Smokeball has its roots in document automation! Imagine how surprised and happily stunned when I clicked on Forms and my letterhead with Client address just popped up! If this is how good Smokeball is out of the starting gate, I can't wait till for more. Plus, the tutorials, recorded training are easy and every single time I call Support, the staff is exceptional. Countless reassurances that I don't need to rush. They are as excited working there as I am using the product. Simply amazing. Cons Billing is tricky to begin with but, as I said, the support staff makes it easy to get going. Everything becomes so intuitive - the software anticipates your needs and has the next step already built in. The designers are experienced in law and technology, but also in interface logic. Cons The cost of attorney licenses. moreover, the support staff licenses are nearly cost prohibitive. I have not hired support staff due to the cost of the support staff license. As I said above, I would not be able to practice without Smokeball at this point. It makes everything so easy. Pros Almost everything. I honestly don't know how we ever practiced without Smokeball. I especially love their integration with InfoTrack for Court e-filing and their workflows. Their customer service is wonderful and they are very reception to ideas and suggestions from their clients. It would also be great if it would integrate with MS 365 online instead of having to use a plug-in with Outlook on the pc. It has been vital to keeping a large client base very organized. Pros I love the ease of use. Its a great way to get organized. The AI is useful even in its infancy. The calendar is indispensable. Cons Im not a fan of the constant updates. It can also slow down other programs if your computer is slower or on the older side. It is so easy to set up our team's tasks and make sure that everyone is on the same page in a matter. Pros I love the task lists! It is SO easy to create tasks and make them a priority. Adjusting how you view your tasks has been extremely helpful and a great feature. Cons There seems to be a lot of issues with the memos. My team has found that when we are writing memos, there is a lot of lagging. While this is just a glitch and not permanent, it is something that we have tried to have fixed several times.
