In my last experience, I had to produce a huge book collection from the scratch during the coronavirus pandemic in a brand new company. There wasn't a physical office, staff, or platform. In 3 or 4 weeks we put everybody on board: picture researchers, graphic designers, illustrators, text editors, cartographers and book reviewers. The workflow was efficiently designed thus helping us in reaching our goal. Pros I really like the possibility of customizing the editors, actions and collections from each client in an independent way, with an easy transition among them. I appreciate the clarity of knowing which IPTC fields we are dealing with and how to manage them. It's also pleasant to know that Fotoware is bringing to Fotoweb all the functionalities from the complete Fotostation. Cons I dream about a platform that captures the html information (such as an image description) and automatically brings them to the IPTC fields. I imagine it should be an API to do it however I'm not certain. That´s not a trivial feature. The FotoWare product itself feels like it is regularly being developed to align with contemporary needs. It has a contemporary feel more than some other database DAMS. Cons FotoWare don't always feel 'global'. Their webinars, collaboration and customer interactions don't feel like they aim to reach Australian customers. Cons If I manually choose two similar photos and want to enrich metadata in both: No automatic comparison of metadata. Configuration is sometimes for nerds - i.e. the text editor. Not many new functions in Fotostation Pro the recent years. Reasons for choosing FotoWare DAM Metadata in Lightroom: I simply hate the scrollbar. It meant creating a small bespoke part ffor the software but it does exactly what we need to do. Pros We utilise only a very small fraction of what is possible from the software. But the development team have helped find bespoke ways to incorporate what we needed the software to do. It's been easy for a variety of experiences to get to grips with and has controls in place to lock certain features down for admins to manage. Cons There really isn't much I don't like or would say needs improving. Tiny little bits of customization in terms of different columns viewable on different pages/databases, instead of the same ones throughout each would be a nice to have. But other than that the ability to customise the vast majority is excellent. Reasons for choosing FotoWare DAM Time and cost to create a system from scratch was must greater than figuring out a way to integrate an old system into this software.
