Slack

## What is Slack?

Slack is where work happens for millions of people everyday. Slack transforms how work happens by bringing AI and automation to where people are already collaborating. Go from chatting with your teams to chatting with apps and data. Break down siloed data through Slack's searchable channel architecture, allowing your teams and AI to access your organization's knowledge. Teams work together in context when CRM data, project management, and people all come together to solve problems and make decisions. Teams can talk to each other and their AI agent in conversational language, allowing them to access each other and information seamlessly. Slack AI recaps channels and summarizes threads so that employees can jump into discussion quickly, whether they are new to a project or catching up after being away. Enterprise applications can easily be integrated and shared in channel and direct message, giving a snapshot of context and the opportunity to collaborate on the spot.

Slack provides incredible ease of use for developer collaboration, offering high value for money given how heavily we rely on its API hooks. Whenever our custom webhooks broke, their enterprise customer support was fast and helpful.

Pros

The chat channels aggregate our Datadog APM alerts and GitHub PRs perfectly. Launching a quick audio meeting via Huddles helps us pair program, and dragging JSON logs directly into the window makes file sharing fast.

Cons

Heavy workspaces consume massive RAM on my local machine. Searching through old incident logs often triggers annoying UI bugs and issues when the cache gets overloaded.

Slack is a very good communication tool. It's easy to use, generally responsive, and does a nice job of keeping people connected throughout the day, and inexpensive. Being able to quickly discuss technical issues, share screenshots, and coordinate work without endless email chains is a big plus. However, it's worth considering whether you really need another paid communication platform if your company already has Microsoft Teams. Overall, though, Slack does its job very well.

Pros

Slack makes it really easy to communicate with coworkers without having everything buried in email. Channels are useful for keeping different projects and topics separate, and the search functionality is pretty good. If you just need casual chat messages without large amounts of chat history retention, you can get away with a very low cost option.

Cons

The only con I have for this service is not even it's own fault. The con is that most businesses already have Microsoft Teams included in existing licenses. That makes it difficult to justify any additional cost for Slack, since it doesn't really add anything (nothing we needed anyway) beyond Teams.

Alternatives considered

[Microsoft Teams](https://www.capterra.com/p/168668/Microsoft-Teams/)

Reasons for choosing Slack

At the time, we didn't have a license for Teams, and Slack was the most cost effective option. It does everything we need a chat app to do.

Slack has been a useful tool that I plan to continue using. Over the 6 months that I've used it I have found it to be beneficial for team communications.

Pros

Slack makes it easy to keep conversations, files, and team updates in one place. The layout is easy to learn, and channels help organize discussions by topic or project. Chat is convenient for quick questions, while file sharing keeps documents close to the conversations they relate to. Huddles are also useful for quick meetings when talking something through is easier than typing. The value for money comes from saving time and keeping everyone connected, although the cost is worth considering as your team grows. Notifications can get overwhelming, so adjusting those settings helps. Customer support and bugs aren't something I've had a problem with. Slack is a useful option for making everyday teamwork more organized and efficient.

Cons

It took me a minute to adjust to slack coming from a GroupMe environment but the change has be good. Everything is organized and it integrates well into my day.

Pros

The availability of both cloud and on-premise across mobile and PC devices is what I like most about Slack. It is easy to conduct virtual business meetings with Slack on the go with my iOS mobile.

Cons

Slack performs all the tasks that I yearn to such as large file sharing, team collaboration and instant messaging without experiencing issues.

Slack has become an essential part of our daily operations. It provides a flexible and organized environment for sharing updates, coordinating tasks, and staying connected across different departments. Its reliability, integrations, and user-friendly design make it a valuable tool for modern teamwork.

Pros

how easily it connects people and tools in one place. The integrations with Google Drive, Calendar, and other platforms are especially useful, while reminders, huddles, and customizable notifications make everyday communication much more efficient.

Cons

One area that could be improved is the notification management, as it can sometimes feel overwhelming when several channels are active. Also, finding older files or specific information through the search function isn't always as straightforward as expected.

Overall, I've had a good experience with Slack. It's a reliable and convenient communication tool that makes it easy to stay connected, share information, and collaborate without adding unnecessary complexity. There are a few areas where navigation and notification management could be improved, but the benefits generally outweigh those frustrations. It's become one of those tools that's easy to take for granted because it works well for everyday communication.

Pros

I like how easy Slack makes it to communicate with individuals or groups without relying on lengthy email chains. Channels are useful for keeping conversations organized by topic, and being able to search previous discussions is a big plus. I also appreciate how well it integrates with other tools, making it convenient to keep up with information and activity in one place.

Cons

Slack can get a little overwhelming when you're involved in multiple channels and conversations throughout the day. Important information can sometimes get buried under newer messages, and notification management takes some getting used to. Threads help keep discussions organized, but they can also make it easy to overlook a response or lose track of a conversation.

I've used Slack for over 3 years at work. It's where our team talks and where our automated alerts land.

Pros

It's excellent for automation alerts and bots. Our workflows post updates straight into channels, so the team sees issues quickly without checking other tools.

Cons

The paid plan is costly, especially for a growing team, and the free plan feels limited. The price adds up quickly as more seats are added.

I love how Slack’s threaded replies keep my project updates tidy; when my design team posts a quick sketch, I can reply in the same thread without cluttering the channel, and the whole discussion stays together, making it a breeze to jump back in later.

Pros

I love the integrations but the mobile app feels clunky the channel search is quick, and file sharing is smooth for quick uploads.

Cons

The notification settings can be a bit overwhelming, especially when a channel has many active threads; I often miss important alerts because the default grouping is too aggressive, and tweaking it takes a few clicks.
