Reason for choosing Slack

After airing my needs to some colleagues with more experience with these softwares and trying them for a few weeks, Slack simply stood out!I have tried to create community of practice to share tips and trick for years. Each was a failure. Using Slack allow me to BE in some communities and manage some others from a single account! Amazing product!!!

### "Staple App for Remote Work"

July 31, 2022

5.0

Overall, Slack has been an effective tool for communication between team members in our workspace.

Pros

I like how it's easy to organize and communicate within a server. There are options to restrict permissions to people for specific channels, which makes communication more efficient within the server.

Cons

I don't like how there's no option to reply to a message specifically without creating threads.

### "Best Team Coordination App I Have Used"

April 21, 2020

5.0

Slack is a great complement to email for quick messages and coordinating with others. I still send research results and other files through email, where I can be more long form, but it makes it extremely easy to ask quick questions or notify others. On a recent project, my team used Slack to "lock" parts of a paper we working on. Overall, Slack has been an excellent coordination tool. It's simple and perfect for my usage

Pros

Slack is an excellent chat tool which is a step above a simple group chat, but not as complex as something like Microsoft Teams. I love that you can divide discussions into different channels. For my organization, we use different channels for different projects and research groups. This prevents main discussions from getting too cluttered and provides privacy for projects which everyone does not need to know about. At the same time, it is not overly cumbersome as I found Microsoft Teams to be. It does not have social networking features, but we don't need that. We have the choice between using Slack or Teams, and I prefer slack for this reason.

Cons

Slack always seems to be logging out of my workspaces. I find that I constantly need to log back in at least once a week. This is a minor annoyance, hence why my rating is still very high, but this problem can delay my work a few minutes each time it happens.

### "An intuitive communication tool that makes it easy to connect with large groups"

September 7, 2018

4.0

I use Slack daily to communicate with a fairly large team.

Pros

Using Slack is easy. Most of the functionalities are explained on the actual software, too. I use it to connect with a large group of coworkers from all over the globe, and I find it really useful that I can see user's local time by just clicking on their names. The pinging and notification tools are also quite helpful. I like the way I can share videos on it too, as they can be played right from the platform. I like the fact that a company can personalize slack to a degree where icons and messages are related to it, too. Finally, the search function and the "unread" tools are very helpful. I frequently use search to look for something across all channels, and it's easier to keep up with news when I come back to the platform after a while thanks to the fact that any new messages from the last time I viewed a particular screen are marked as "unread".

Cons

Well, this is not actually something that the software is responsible for, but there is something as too many notifications. It makes it difficult to relax sometimes. I wish I could mute notifications of a specific channel. The fact that messages expire on the free version is something that really bugs me, but I understand that the firm needs to make sure that there are SOME functionalities that people have to pay for, so I get it... still, the group I work with is quite large and the paid plans are charged per person, so we are not able to get one. I wish there was a fixed paid plan that would prevent messages from expiring regardless of the number of people working at any given time.

### "A Creative Communication Solution"

April 16, 2020

4.0

I am the Director of small non profit preschool. My Parent Committee decided to implement Slack as their parent-to-parent communication system. We had been looking for a vehicle that allowed our whole school to communicate with each other without having to swap cell numbers or to start a private Facebook group since several of my parents weren't on Facebook. As an educator for over 25 years, I have never had a system that allowed parents to talk to each other while we as the administration are still in the loop and without creating cliques or drama. Slack has been pivotal in allowing us to dialogue regarding fundraisers, social events, and recommendations - all according to parents' interest. However, due to its stark look and overwhelming (to the non tech user) nature, we have only succeeded in getting a portion of our parent body to opt in. In the end, I don't know of a better solution to our challenge, I recognize that Slack is designed for a work force usage where it is all about retention of text and fluidity of conversation, but it might benefit of a spruced up look so that it might more easily apply to groups like mine as well.

Pros

Slack was easy to set up, easy to implement and allowed for a plethora of conversations to allow for self collection (by interest) and continuity of conversation.

Cons

Slack is daunting to nontechnical users. Its look isn't slick and user friendly to those Facebook surfer parents who want the pertinent information for them front and center. My users expect to be kept up to date on information without having to go look for it.

Reason for choosing Slack

Several of my users do not use Facebook and it seemed unfair to obligate them to join. Additionally as a small PTO our leaders were afraid of any information being lost in the feed instead of being easily accessible for the continued dialogue.

### "Un outil collaboratif adapté à nos besoins"

January 18, 2024

5.0

Pros

### "Slack review - Nov 2018"

November 29, 2018

5.0

It's a solid chat program to allow teams to collaborate. The desktop app and web-based options are useful when not using a personal computer. The phone app also allows a user to be available when they are away from their computer. Keyboard shortcuts make certain tasks quick to accomplish and bots can also be used to automate certain events. Overall it is a good option for many businesses that only require communication within their organization. Adding outside users can be risky and I would advise creating another "workspace" to handle any outside of organization communications

Pros

A free option is available but it is supplied with limitations. The chat feature is pretty solid and the main reason to use Slack. It is designed for internal businesses or departments in mind and provides group channels and the ability to chat with multiple users from one window.

Cons

Free version is limited to 10,000 messages a month and will delete messages once this limit is reached. Creating new chat sessions can sometimes be tricky because the software will only list a handful of your most recent discussions and this can force the user to search for a particular user before they are able to initiate a chat with them. This can be difficult if their full name is not available or known. The company directory is not place in an intuitive location and can be difficult to find when a list of all the available contacts is needed.

### "Must Need Communication Tool"

August 23, 2022

5.0

Pros

Slack is easy to use, and can be used on both your computer and cell phones. Plus all communication will sync to each device so it’s easy to keep up. We have team chats, one on one chats, and easily organized group chats to keep us on top of our tasks. When work is chaotic it’s nice to have a simple and easy way to effectively communicate.

Cons

File sharing can get a little tricky with larger files, so we typically resort to email for those. But screenshots and one page documents are easy to slack to a co worker.

### "Run your whole company from one window"

January 26, 2021

We use it daily to work remotely and integrate with other tools. Its notification settings and "intelligence" are almost always spot on no matter which device you access Slack through.

Pros

There are so many ways to customize and integrate with Slack that it makes selecting this product an easy choice. There is almost nothing you cannot do, add on, or create yourself.

Cons

Not many cons here. There where some rough edges at the start but Slack has come a long way to smooth those over.

### "With great power comes great responsibility"

February 20, 2020

5.0

great product with great capabilities but it there is no training on etiquette, its a collaboration wild west shoot out and a lot of people will run and duck for cover. Which means they will revert to old comms tools like email, text or actual face to face communication IRL (Heaven help us!)

Pros

Slack is an easy to use collaboration tool. I can have 1:1 discussions, create channels (public and private), share documents and images. We also leverage the integration capabilities to connect with other applications in our tech stack.

Cons

Slack enables people to digitally barf all over the place. There are those in our org who understand there are certain protocols, etiquette, do's and don't's. There are others who use the @channel or @here for every message and they are spamming numerous channels with their nonsense. And there are others who communicate completely with emojis and gifs. Maybe there are backend settings in Slack today that aren't being used by our site admins, but there really should be some proper training so we dont have to sift through so much noise to find relevant bits of communication.

### "Nice messaging platform"

January 26, 2020

5.0

Overall slack is a nice messaging platform and really helps the individuals while working in a project of multiple team members. It helps in sharing of text messages and files and also has calling features and major third party integrations which makes it a complete package.

Pros

I found slack a powerful tool to communicate with the other team members in real time. It has better voice quality on call, large size file sharing, one-to-one and group messaging. It also allows to star the messages, which is really helpful to bookmark the important information from the chat. The features such as wrapping the text in code snippet and selecting the file type (for example, html, java, js, etc.) is beneficial for developers. It provides APIs to create custom applications and also has an app directory from where users can install out-of-the-box integrations for Github, google drive and other third parties.

Cons

There are few features which are missing, for example, whenever a user is removed from the workspace, no notification is being sent back to the user. Also, the slackbot could be improved, most of the times, it just provides the search results from the slack help directory. It is not easy to switch workspaces. One has to close the workspace completely and then switch back to the another workspace.

### "Remote-first working is impossible without Slack"

October 21, 2022

5.0

Slack is a critical component of our remote-first working model. Slack provides us a constant stream of communication, communicating over email isn't nearly as productive or quick to keep up with our workflow.

Pros

Instant messaging, file sharing, and video calling is critical in our remote-first workplace. Other platforms do this well but Slack is the industry leader. Slack's ability to integrate with our other software solutions sets it apart from the rest.

Cons

Sometimes Slack can be information overload with multiple team members and group chats sending notifications. This can be mitigated by muting some notifications or being selective in slack channels that are joined.

### "Slack is an integral tool we use to communicate in our organization. "

June 5, 2018

5.0

Pros

Nothing slows down your workday more than being bombarded by emails, particularly internal emails. One thing we do to reduce clutter is move all conversation into our online communication tool, Slack. Slack is a free online messaging service that brings all our communication together in one place. It's real-time messaging that even pushes to your phone when your computer is idle. Up to 10,000 messages are stored at a time for searchable chat history (more if you upgrade from the free version). You can split up your communication into channels meant for those who need to see it and it runs in the background of your computer without notifying you unless someone is talking directly to you. Slack allows you to star messages that forms a follow up action item list, add reactions to a message that allows the sender to know you have received it without the extraneous got it and thank you you get via email, as well as make conference calls/video chats directly inside of the program. We also integrated our online project management tool, Trello, into Slack that pushes real-time project updates for all to see as various team members check off items.

Cons

Very hard to find a con about this software! It integrates with so many features. Pricing is also very reasonable

Cons

### "The most important tool for remote workplaces"

October 21, 2018

5.0

Pros

Slack lives up to its promise; it replaces email for a lot of conversations. Especially conversations that require a lot of back-and-forth, but don't necessarily require arranging a meeting. It's been the linchpin of communications in all of the remote workplace jobs I've had. Since companies that use Slack tend to "live" on Slack, it's a great way to make people and information easily accessible. It's nice that there are so many integrations (e.g., to get alerts when certain triggers are tripped, like, for example, when a customer support question comes in but hasn't been assigned), but frankly, just the basic conversation and file-sharing functionality creates most of the value (in my experience). The addition of video conferencing has been really handy, too; rather than fire up another app (like Zoom), it's easy to create impromptu remote meetings.

Cons

The downside of having a place where so much of your workplace communication happens is that you might find yourself spending an inordinate amount of time in Slack. That is, past the point of productivity. It's a bit like a social media app in the way that you can develop a habit to check your Slack feed obsessively just to see if there are any interesting tidbits of conversation that you missed.
