### "A Powerful Observability Platform with Premium Pricing"

December 18, 2025

4.0

Overall, my experience with Datadog has been very positive. As a senior SRE, I rely on it daily for infrastructure visibility, performance tracking, and incident response. The platform is reliable, feature-rich, and continues to evolve with meaningful improvements. It has helped streamline on-call workflows and reduced mean time to resolution across multiple services. Aside from pricing concerns, it remains one of the most effective observability solutions I’ve worked with.

Pros

Datadog provides a comprehensive and unified observability platform that has been invaluable for maintaining the reliability of our systems. Its integration ecosystem is exceptional—most services we use can be connected with minimal effort. The dashboards are highly customizable and intuitive, making it easy to visualize key performance metrics. Log management, APM, and infrastructure monitoring work seamlessly together, which significantly improves incident detection and troubleshooting. The alerting capabilities are robust and flexible, enabling precise, noise-free monitoring.

Cons

The primary downside is the cost. As our environment scales, Datadog becomes increasingly expensive, especially when ingesting large volumes of logs and metrics. Cost management requires constant attention, and certain features can become hard to justify purely from a pricing standpoint.

Alternatives considered

[Dynatrace](https://www.capterra.com/p/81932/Dynatrace/)[Splunk Enterprise](https://www.capterra.com/p/94317/Splunk/)[Papertrail](https://www.capterra.com/p/180057/Papertrail/)

Reason for choosing Datadog

During our evaluation process, we compared Datadog against Dynatrace, Splunk Enterprise, and Papertrail. Each platform had strengths, but Datadog ultimately provided the most balanced and mature observability solution for our needs. Dynatrace offered strong automatic discovery and topology features, but its learning curve and operational complexity were higher. The platform felt more rigid in how data was presented, whereas Datadog offered greater customization and flexibility in building dashboards, alerts, and workflows—important for an SRE-driven environment. Splunk Enterprise delivered excellent log analytics, but it required substantial infrastructure, tuning, and ongoing management to get the same level of real-time visibility that Datadog provides out of the box. Extending Splunk into full-stack observability required additional modules and overhead, making the operational cost and complexity less appealing. Papertrail was simple and effective for logs, but it lacked the breadth required for modern observability. It wasn’t designed to cover metrics, APM, distributed tracing, user experience monitoring, or Kubernetes-native insights—capabilities that have become essential for our environment. Datadog stood out because it integrates all core observability pillars—metrics, logs, traces, and real-user monitoring—into a single, cohesive platform without requiring separate tooling or significant operational overhead. Its cloud-native integrations, Kubernetes visibility, alerting flexibility, and ease of onboarding helped us accelerate adoption and improve incident response. Although cost remains a consideration, Datadog provided the strongest combination of capability, usability, and ecosystem maturity, making it the best fit for our long-term observability strategy.

Switched from

[New Relic](https://www.capterra.com/p/118128/New-Relic/)

We transitioned from New Relic to Datadog primarily because Datadog offered broader observability coverage and deeper integration capabilities that aligned better with our evolving infrastructure. Datadog’s unified platform for metrics, logs, and APM provided a more cohesive experience compared to New Relic’s more segmented tooling. Additionally, Datadog’s out-of-the-box dashboards, cloud-native integrations, and Kubernetes visibility were significantly more mature, which reduced setup time and improved our ability to troubleshoot issues quickly. The alerting flexibility and correlation features in Datadog also gave us better operational insights, ultimately improving on-call efficiency. While New Relic served us well, Datadog’s ecosystem, extensibility, and end-to-end visibility made it a more effective solution for our SRE workflows.

### "Datadog APM Database Monitoring is a must have if you're a DBRE"

December 17, 2025

5.0

Overall from a DBRE perspective it has hit all the major observability checkpoints that were needed to monitor our databases. Time to respond to a database incident has really improved and we have more visibility into the systems

Pros

I work in Data Reliability and so far the best thing about Datadog has been its APM feature and the Postgres integration. I have been able to track issues before they could happen and it had been really useful during incidents

Cons

The recent AI recommendations are sometimes not very useful. When a query is slow obviously the first recommendation would be to add indexes. For some reason the AI recommendation system does not check the indexes before recommending. To an engineer who doesn't have admin privileges to the Database, these recommendations might sound confusing and they would create tickets which gets marked as Won't Do

Switched from

We took a survey on used features from pganalyze and realized DBM had similar offering at similar prices. We did a trial with 5 instances and found it useful. Later we implemented it across 40 RDS instances and seen the value within organization

### "Still the best, but can be better"

December 17, 2025

4.0

Overall, my experience with Datadog has been positive. The platform is stable, powerful, and easy to work with on a daily basis. At the same time, it feels like some areas could be more polished, particularly performance, issue-resolution speed, and deeper OpenTelemetry support. Despite these shortcomings, Datadog remains one of the strongest monitoring solutions available.

Pros

Datadog offers a very clean, intuitive, and well-designed user experience that makes working with dashboards, metrics, and logs significantly easier. Its UX stands out and helps streamline daily monitoring tasks.

Cons

The biggest drawback is the relatively slow pace at which issues are addressed, along with the incomplete and sometimes inconsistent implementation of OpenTelemetry compatibility. This is especially noticeable with features such as handling “resources” in APM. Faster improvements in this area would be greatly appreciated.

### "Looking for a good one stop shop? Go for Datadog"

December 17, 2025

4.0

If you want a solid solution, with constant updates and you have the budget for your all in one Observability platform, go they way with Datadog. You won’t regret it

Pros

The wide range of services and excellent customer care from customer succes. If you compare it to other competitors, Datadog offers a better one stop show and one single pane of glass

Cons

The pricing is quite steep compared to competitors. It’s diffidently not the most cheap product in terms of pricing.

### "Powerful Insights, But Costly"

May 5, 2026

5.0

Datadog has been dependable and easy to work with. It gives clear, real‑time insight into systems, and once dashboards and alerts are set up, it makes monitoring and troubleshooting much smoother.

Pros

Datadog gives clear, real‑time visibility into systems and apps. Dashboards are easy to read, alerts are fast, and it pulls everything into one place so issues are easier to spot and fix.

Cons

It can get expensive as you add more features and data. Some dashboards take extra tuning to get right, and the amount of metrics can feel overwhelming at times.

Pros

new features, especially around infra, ability to connect infra and apps, \[sensitive content hidden\] client success meetings

Cons

some areas are too vague, no reply on issues like metric rate changes by time window, custom metrics insights, APM changes, pricing structure. All of these make some features unusable and some areas unpredictable

overal i am impressed, it intergeates well with our other tools, slack Jira ect for notifications. Easiely set up with minimal experience if you are okay to read a few guides

Pros

I use specifically for the page iut function to monitor our server stack. Our engineering team uses it pretty robustly for other services. Its easy to set up monitors exactly how you need them and the built in page out software replaced our requirment for a secondary software for on call rotations

Cons

Can get a bit messy if you dont implement teams well in the beginning i find the filtering a bit convoluted as well but might be my own issues

### "Datadog the one stop shop for all observability needs"

December 18, 2025

5.0

Datadog is our strategic Observability platform which is perceived well within the entire organization. We find Datadog always staying ahead of other platforms for tech adoption and building observability around it.

Pros

I find Datadog's Observability offering quite comprehensive. It's like our 1-stop shop for all monitoring needs and has helped us get rid of other tools as most could be done here effectively. The ease of use and friendly UI, tagging and integrations all add to reason of having it as your preferred tool.

Cons

There is lot of products renaming and navigation updates that always keep going on with the platform. Sometimes the products are made GA without 100% diligence about bugs and usability. Billing & Usage although transparent, can sometimes be difficult to understand.

### "Datadog Pros and Cons from an SRE at MLB"

December 17, 2025

4.0

Pros

The wide array of features that Datadog offers, allowing for a truly comprehensive observability suite.

Cons

I think that sometimes the breadth of Datadog's offerings is achieved at expense of depth - I often find that new features come out (even from what seems like the same product/team) before issues with older features are fully addressed or before requests for what seem like simple, core functionality additions are addressed.

Pros

This app is actually a lifesaver. We are able to use it as developers in my company to track down each step of the user journey through our system. It is up and working most of the time, with pretty much all the tools needed within to search and find whatever.

Cons

The cost is probably the most con, however considering how much it helps it seriously is worth considering and getting most of the time.

### "Plenty of integrations. Works well with AWS. Reduces noise. Could improve DB monitor."

March 13, 2025

4.0

Overall, I would recommend DataDog to others, especially if they use AWS. Installation is pretty flexible. I wish pricing was lower and more transparent. I would like to see improvements in their database monitoring module.

Pros

The infrastructure monitoring is great. Datadog was one of the only vendors that could handle and mute AWS EC2s as they scale in and out. Compared to other vendors I would get extra alert noise. I do like all the integrations. There are a ton of integrations. I love the traces explorer and service map. It is really easy to figure out which service is causing an issue.

Cons

I wish there were more price transparency. I think a pricing calculator would help. I wish the CI visibility feature supported more CI/CD tools. Setting up the APM monitoring/traces is a little tricky with AWS ECS. I wish DataDog's database monitoring supported explain plans for MySql prepared statements.

Overall, datadog has been a high level security structure for our entire system. Fixing bugs could help greatly.

Pros

Datadog does what it says. Our team members do not have to worry anymore about data incidence response. This makes reporting seemless. Accessing realtime response prompts are now easy and analysis has been greatly improved. We get the required support needed from the datadog team.

Cons

### "First time Datadog users with growing pains"

January 14, 2025

4.0

Overall my experience has been good, but I would like better product support for the various use cases my organization has and an easier more competitive billing structure is needed.

Pros

Easy of use and integrations make Datadog very compelling. I am also a big fan of the out of the box dashboards and views that help out teams provide value quickly to the products they support.

Cons

Sometimes that ease of use can be too much of a crutch. I find that creating useful monitors and queries is challenging because I am not allowed access to more advanced features or search criteria I am not aware of. The cost of using Datadog and the numerous areas of billing has really been a big struggle. Not having a set price for using Datadog, the constant increase with new, on-demand services and understanding all the categories I can be charged for is becoming a huge pain point in my organization

### "Reliable Monitoring for Backend Systems"

December 17, 2024

4.0

Datadog has made backend monitoring and debugging much smoother for me. The ability to correlate logs, traces, and metrics in one place helps speed up root cause analysis. While there’s a bit of a learning curve initially, once set up, it becomes an essential part of the workflow.

Pros

As a backend developer, I find Datadog extremely useful for monitoring logs, metrics, and traces in real time. It integrates well with most tools and services we use, making it easy to identify bottlenecks or errors. The dashboards are highly customizable, which helps with specific backend performance tracking.

Cons

The pricing becomes expensive as usage scales, especially for log ingestion. Some of the advanced configurations, like setting up alerts for specific backend metrics, can take some time to figure out.
