If you are willing to learn a lot and maintain it yourself in exchange for having a free on-prem solution, I think the trade-off is worth it. Pros Zabbix is amazing. It's free open source software for monitoring IT infrastructure. I use it to track the health of my office laptops, router, network switches, everything. The web UI dashboard is easy to read and you can configure email notifications, which I have turned into helpdesk tickets for me to review by sending to my Helpdesk's email address. Cons It's definately a learning experience if you haven't used something like this before (which I hadn't). You have to learn about SNMP, managing the templates for the devices you want to monitor, setting up the hosts one-by-one for monitoring or using the scanner option and then tweaking what it finds. It's a lot to do at first but the reward is now I typically know about an issue in the office before anyone else even notices it, much less sends me a ticket about it. If you are multi-office it may be more than you want to undertake. Yes you can setup Proxies and connect them, but if you manage lots of locations you may want to look at something cloud hosted at that point? If something doesn't work, the reason is almost always between the keyboard and the chair. Pros Very easy to get started, will scale from home monitoring to global scale. No need to know much about monitoring, you can go far with "learning on the go". Possibilities are almost endless, you will run out hosts first. Zabbix is free for life, so getting started and seeing if it would fit your requirements is easy and risk free. No time limits or stripped features! Zabbix community is excellent. You can extend your expertise with the community forums. It's easy to get involved, too. Getting certified is an option as well. Pros Beats many/most SaaS monitoring tools with zero cost as an open source platform. Has a native agent for many OSs that can be deployed easily. We use Zabbix to monitor our systems in a data center and cloud all with a single dashboard. Can be extended to use Web Scenarios which will performance monitor systems/connectivity, too. Probably the best open source tool for monitoring on the market. Cons You need to host it yourself and setup does take some time to get all systems monitoring and dashboards created. Once set up, it will monitor, alert you, and perform actions to ensure your services are up and running. It's great! Pros Zabbix is open-source, and you can use it for free. So there's no excuse not to use it. It's very comprehensive so you can do almost any type of monitoring. We monitor various services, such as Nginx, MariaDB, etc. Plus, we can set up custom monitoring to keep an eye on things that are unique to our needs. Zabbix can also perform actions/commands, so you can set up a monitoring and response system to ensure your services are up and running. Cons Zabbiz is feature-rich, but that comes with a steep learning curve. It's not bad if you know what you're doing, but it can be a bit of a challenge for beginners. The agentless monitoring provides the advantage on some hand where installing of agent is not easy or possible. The newly designed web interface is user friendly and help in implementing and deploy with ease. Dashboard also provide the push notification to right user group about its issue and monitoring engineer can detect the root cause of the issue. Pros The new Zabbix 4.0 has significantly enhanced the dashboard and other graphical widget. The newly design time module selection also allows the word syntax for faster access to the metrics. Zabbix provides the mutiple modes like Kiosk mode & compact mode view to present the data in more efficient way. Adapting it to your environment and customizing it also requires some time, but in the end, it's something that's going to help save you from checking device by device. My experience has been very good, I have used many monitoring tools that have also been good but this is the one that has convinced me the most. It requires time for implementation but it is understood that it is a free tool. Pros I implemented the appliance with Ubuntu and if you follow the manual the installation is simple. A variety of monitoring resources can be added and triggers can be customized according to your needs. The dashboard gives you a very wide view of all the computer resources and gives you the possibility to prioritize in a more efficient way. You can create your own maps, review detailed graphs of resources, create macros and view the online information of all devices. In general, it is a very useful tool. Cons It takes patience and time to adjust the triggers so that it only shows you the problems that really exist in the infrastructure but once you adapt it to your needs becomes an ally to be aware of the resources and be able to react in time. When a problem arises with the tool, there aren't many forums and it requires you to invest time in finding the solution. In almost a year and a half that I have using the tool I have only had the monitoring stopped for a few hours because the service stopped, I found the cause looking in the forums and I could solve the problem. While you are watching it, there are intervals of refreshing the data, but I couldn\`t find anything less than 15 seconds. The zabbix agent has low memory usage, so it can be installed on low spec web servers. The ability to create custom metrics and setup different triggers and notifications is great. Cons Ease of use isn't great and it takes a long period of adoption to get your head around how items, triggers and notifications work. The error messages you receive aren't particularly user friendly and are more suited to developers rather than operations teams. Housekeeping doesn't stop us ending up with huge database tables in Zabbix. We use this to monitor 100+ individual SQL instances and 8+ Windows cloud servers.
