It helped that my employer was willing to pay for it when I was first introduced otherwise I probably never would have used it. They would do well to take this into account when pricing for beginning developers that don't have a lot of money. There are loads of features and plugins available which make this tool extremely flexible and able to fit just about any developer's needs. Only one thing comes to mind and its something very specific with the way Intellij handles the Spring devtools technology. The multiple themes makes sure that IntelliJ will look good for everyone. Working with Version Control is a breeze! Cons Sometimes I have issues with git credentials, but this is a minor issue. Pros IntelliJ is consistently one of the better IDEs for working in Java. We consistently found gaps around autocompletion, compiling, or other issues in other platforms. Out of all the Java IDEs I've tried, IntelliJ has allowed me to be the most productive in my time spent writing code. Pros \- Git integration, allows for change pushing directly from inside the IDE - Nice preinstalled themes (looks better than competing IDEs) - Syntax highlighting and typechecking is extremely helpful Cons \- Expensive for commercial use - Imported projects are often converted to IDEA-specific projects. It's very easy to debug the code as it already indicates if there is any issue. It shows the list of suggestions if you type only some letters , all you have to do is to choose from the list. Version Control mechanism has become a lot easier as you can compare your current code with the code in any other branch you want. Pros Lots of features makes this product best from the other IDE's . We can download the plugins required for our code, the shortcuts are the best part as we don't have to perform the long steps for every task which shortens the time consumption as well. Cons The only con I have faced till now is the performance issue in different machines. You need a system with capable amount of RAM if there are lots of plugins installed in your IDE , as the loading takes time in that case. I liked the IDE because it provided code recommendations (showing the function defitions, overloads / overrides, etc.); contains built-in support for build system such as gradle and maven; and it is not that heavy on RAM. For example, I extensively used maven to add and resolve certain dependencies, and with a few shortcuts, IntelliJ has made it easy for me to navigate, install / delete dependencies, and in general, control build system in a simpler way. Pros It is a complete IDE (i.e. compiler, debugger, etc.) with a lot of cool and advanced features. For example, Java build systems such as gradle, maven, etc. are integrated into the IDE; thus, it makes it easier to keep track of builds processes such dependencies within IDE itself. Cons It costs money given that it does not have some niche features. Eclipse and NetBeans are open-source, yet as powerful as IntelliJ. If you are beginner or intermediate developer, you will not notice much. But, as you crave for more niche feature (e.g. AspectJ), you will not find them within IntelliJ. I would highly recommend to use it who are facing issues with eclipse. Pros IntelliJ IDEA is the best platform for developers to do coding. It can support multiple languages like Java, Python. It is very easy to use. It helps to run your unit testing individually. I like IntelliJ IDEA more as compared to eclipse for Java coding. Cons I believe its little bit heavy like Visual studio.
