You can make it yours with the themes. And is very fast ( for its "heaviness" )! The possibility to give the WHOLE JetBrains platform for free to students is great. Cons Intellij is very advanced and has a lot of features: unfortunately is not the best solution for beginners because an average person would need some tutorials. I had some problems with SpringBoot and Google Cloud Platform (appengine) integration. Maybe some OFFICIAL video tutorials would be cool. That's why, for Flutter and React Native, I use vscode. It is very intelligent and has the ability to provide accurate suggestions and a number of other features will allow you to be very efficient in coding. There is a free community version and a paid version as well. Pros This is a great IDE with a large number of useful features. These include smart auto completion of code, auto import, plugin support and suggestions which greatly enhance your workflow. The system is very intelligent and is able to predict what you want to do and provide suggestions which are usually spot on. This is one of the best features of IntelliJ IDEA. Cons The software can use up a noteworthy amount of resources. Sometimes, indexing takes a long time. Sometimes the updates are very large and sometimes it requires you to install everything again. Other than these minor issues, I haven't found anything much that I dislike. Pros We work with multiple languages in our stack, so our codebase is constructed from Java and JS manily, so it's easy to use IntelliJ IDEA for our stack, very robust tool in my toolbox. It has never failed me and I enjoy the features(code completion, smart auto correct, suggesting functions and many more). Pros This is absolutely my favorite IDE to use for java development. It is easy to setup, it has a clean interface and it never crashes so it is extremely reliable. I have been using this IDE for the past 4 years and cannot recommend it enough. Cons Honestly, this software has hardly any drawbacks. The setting up might be a little hard for people new to programming but even then, intellij does a good job in guiding you through it. Pros I was qualified for the full version at the faculty. Compared with other IDE-s is way better. Our teacher's ask us to work with it and they were right. It is fast has a ton of extensions and gets regular updates. I used it on Linux Mint and Windows. Everything you need is where you expect it - the debugger, the console access, git, extensions like CheckStyle, etc. Cons When creating a new project or doing the initial IDE setup, it presents too many options (like extensions, templates, etc.). Certain selections from suggestions that are made seem to rank up the next time you write a similar code. It supports many programming languages and allows creating your own keyboard shortcuts. Mostly I find myself wishing it was more modernized like VSCode. Pros The integration with the Kotlin environment and associated tools (i.e. Gradle, debugger) makes it so this is the best software to use and there are a lot of plugins and customizations available Cons The dang thing crashes all the time, seems like at least once a day it will just randomly crash for no reason, even if just sitting in the background and not in use. I have used VSCode for the past 3 years, and am only using IntelliJ because I have been doing some Kotlin programming, and man does it feel like a step backwards. Unfortunately, it seems like maybe some more Kotlin tooling is needed for VSCode to make it a replacement in this specific scenario. The UI is also a lot more cluttered compared to VSCode.
