Pros The autocomplete is amazing, and the debugger is super intelligent and makes it super easy to find bugs and fix unintended behaviors. There are also plenty of plugins that make it more useful than just Java and Kotlin. Cons I have had issues with configuration files corrupting, causing the project to fall apart, but this shouldn't normally happen in regular use. Pros IntelliJ IDEA has great support for JAVA projects and is focused on increasing your productivity in software development. It supports various Java build tools like Maven, Gradle etc. It has great autocomplete support that we all except from an IDE. I find it decent, but not great, and would never recommend it over the free alternatives I use for my own personal projects. It does its job, but is overloaded with features that are hard to use and hidden in myriads of dropdown menus and tabs inside tabs in the bottom part of the window. All in all, it's a chaotic work environment I would not recommend for those who don't need most of those options. Pros IntelliJ is very powerful and is definitely a great tool for backend developers who need that kind of power. Cons I work front end development and can definitely do without paying for a licence for IntelliJ. If it was up to me, I would definitely use the main competitor as it is nicer and easier to use. I find IntelliJ easier to use than other applications for finding classes and interfaces in large applications. Cons Understandably, since IntelliJ is a pretty heavy-weight IDE, I often have to invalidate cache and restart it. August 1, 2018 5.0 Makes writing java code a lot easier. Pros Depending on the app I am currently working on, I'll bounce back and forth between IntelliJ and NetBeans. Now that I have worked with it for a while, I really like the IntelliJ package's feel and tools. I also am starting to do a fair amount of Android development and Android Studio is based on the IntelliJ platform, so I feel right at home. Cons When I was just starting out, it took a while to learn where some of the tools were and some of the shortcut keys to use, so I will say "learning curve". The editor provides a clean and simple interface for editing code, thereby helping with the entire development process. Furthermore, it provides a wide array of tools to manage projects without much user intervention. Cons With such a large number of functionalities, a new user might require a better way of familiarization with the editor. However, once you've figured it out, IntelliJ IDEA is a breeze to use. I also like how I can add external libraries, etc. to my build path. I'm still trying to figure out how to wrap everything up into a single deployable file. I am a fairly new user, but I use the IDE off an on. Cons I installed it first on my Ubuntu machine and it worked great. However, after I upgraded to Groovy Gorilla and Hirsute Hippo, the IDE will not start up at all. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Not sure if this is a compatibility issue, so I can't really rate this piece as a "con." Debugger is excellent (can attach to web sessions in chrome). Provides project templates for common frameworks (django, flask etc.) that greatly improves setup time. Integrates with environment management tools such as pip and anaconda. Cons Not a great deal. Although I have to learn another set of keyboard shortcuts, the integrated tools/features like Maven, Git, and JUnit make relearning a new tool worth it. I love that there's also an integrated Terminal for command line programming. Cons The full version (Ultimate) requires payment and I have been using the Community Edition (CE) for all my development needs. While I don't necessarily need the features or programming languages that the full version offers, I might need them in the future.
