My experience with Wagepoint was generally positive until the recent changes. It was straightforward and helped reduce the administrative burden of running payroll, which is exactly what a small-business payroll service should do. Unfortunately, the recent changes have significantly changed that experience. What was once relatively simple has become another source of administrative friction, troubleshooting and uncertainty. I have spent hours dealing with payroll issues and trying to confirm that my employees will actually be paid. That is particularly frustrating because the reason I pay for a payroll service is to remove this work from my business. I understand that some changes may be driven by regulatory or banking requirements outside Wagepoint's control. But those costs and complexities should not simply be transferred downstream as unpaid labour for small-business owners. Wagepoint used to remove work from my desk. Right now, it is putting work back on it.

Pros

Wagepoint used to remove work from my desk. Right now, it is putting work back on it. aaaaaaaaaa

Cons

Recent changes have created significant administrative friction instead of reducing it. Payroll notifications failed to go out, and I have spent hours troubleshooting and trying to determine whether my employees will actually be paid correctly and on time. When payroll software fails, the work doesn't disappear. It gets transferred back to the small-business owner as unpaid troubleshooting, verification and administration. I pay Wagepoint to handle payroll. I should not have to spend hours doing the job I am paying Wagepoint to do.

AWFUL. I would not recommend supporting companies that don't have any support. Luckily, they asked for a review after one of our issues was fixed days later through this platform, which easily highlights competitors.

Pros

Nothing was positive about their use of the 2.0 version of the software, our migration was a nightmare experience with issues that are still on-going. I was not able to be paid, I was not able to add admins, there's no support over the phone the their used to be. I will be moving away. Our payroll is also processed late now. EFF THESE GUYS

Cons

Literally. everything. No one to call for help, incompetent support people that say back to you what you say to them, they are unable to resolve the issues with their own system. It's a horrible system. I'm not getting paid this pay run because my account is incomplete (though it's complete). Our payroll was processed a day late. We've been waiting for DAYS with no help from their line with multiple tickets filed.

It depends the day. Some days are better than others. At the time of writing with 2 conversions just completed to 2.0, I would say it is meh.

Pros

Flexibility that WagePoint 2.0 offers over version 1.0 but 1.0 has some better ease of use than 2.0. Customer service is good once your not in a queue to get a response.

Cons

Converting to 2.0 I have encountered: RRSP default codes setup $ not %. Never had that in my 25+ year career. Setting it up was not enjoyable to discover on payroll deadline day. The other item was weekly pays was 52 in 1.0 and somehow converted to 53 in 2.0. Had to manipulate the Salary as a work around. These little nuisance I have found are just frustrating. Are they in the instructions, not that I read but I could have missed it. Am worried about what other items will be missed that I didn't consider that is part of the conversion and will affect T4 season

Our overall experience has been extremely positive. We compared several payroll providers and genuinely feel we made the right choice. Wagepoint gives us the tools to manage payroll properly, while the personal customer service makes the biggest difference. When building an organization from the ground up, having knowledgeable support available is invaluable.

Pros

The customer service has been exceptional. As a newer nonprofit receiving federal funding, we needed to set up payroll quickly, correctly and with confidence. Having a real person call, explain the process and walk us through each step gave us peace of mind and prevented delays. The platform is also straightforward and easy to navigate.

Cons

There is a learning curve when setting up payroll for the first time, especially when entering tax information and understanding each section. However, the support team has made the process much easier, so this has not been a major concern.

Reasons for choosing Wagepoint

I chose Wagepoint because payroll is its primary focus. It felt simpler, more personal and better suited to our nonprofit. The customer support was exceptional, with real guidance through setup, giving me confidence that employees and deductions would be handled correctly.

10/10. Always there to assist. Quick with responses. Great, fantastic. Customer service on point, easy to use and access any pay stubs, T4's all that stuff.

Pros

I used to do all the calculations myself (employee taxes, etc) and now I don't have to do any of that. It does it all for me. Very easy to use, no learning curve associated with it, just input your employees information and off it goes. No bugs and issues have ever been encountered. Best decision we made was to have someone else take care of this for us.

Cons

No thing that I can think of. It has been a great tool to add to our system and we have no complaints at all.

Pre-migration - top notch, 10/10, highly recommend Post-migration - absolutely terrible, 0/10, looking for an alternative solution

Pros

We've used Wagepoint for our business payroll since day 1. We have loved the system and the service up until the mandatory switch from 1.0 to 2.0.

Cons

The migration from 1.0 to 2.0 was very time consuming. After completion, we received an email on Friday night stating 2.0 won't support Quebec payroll. I called and emailed dozens of times between receiving the message on Friday night and our 12pm EDT Tuesday payroll cutoff however NO ONE responded. I had to process payroll without my Quebec employees included.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and for trusting Wagepoint with your payroll since the very beginning of your business. We're truly sorry for your recent experience and understand how stressful it must have been to process payroll without your Quebec employees included — especially with a tight deadline and not hearing back from us as soon as you needed. Quebec payroll support is coming soon for Wagepoint 2.0. We recognize that the timing and communication around this fell short of what you deserved, and that's something we take seriously. We'd appreciate the opportunity to reconnect and help however we can. If you're open to it, please reach out to us at support@wagepoint.com, and we'd be happy to set up a call to discuss where things stand and the options available to you in the meantime.

In the beginning, it was great, no issues. This past experience with incorrect T4s, which cascaded into audits and fines with interest was very upsetting and a deal breaker. We count on Wagepoint to correctly submit to CRA every time and unfortunately this was not the case. Wagepoint did reimburse for accounting fees related to the issue.

Gets the core job done without a lot of fuss. Not the most feature-rich payroll tool out there but reliable and the learning curve is low, which matters when payroll isn't something you want people making mistakes on.

Pros

Clean interface and easy to navigate. Running payroll is quick once everything is set up and the tax filing handling takes a lot off your plate. Works well for a Canadian company.

Cons

Reporting options are a bit limited and some edge cases around payroll adjustments require more manual work than expected. Would like to see better integration options.

Payroll needs to be accurate and consistent, and Wagepoint helps keep that part of my work simple and organized. It reduces the need for manual calculations and lets me focus more on reviewing and managing client work instead of handling repetitive payroll tasks. One noticeable improvement compared to using Excel and the CRA Payroll Deductions Online Calculator is the reduced time spent cross-checking and organizing information. Tasks like reviewing past payroll details or calculating insurable hours now take far less effort because most of that structure is already built in. Overall, it fits well into my workflow and feels reliable for day-to-day use. I would rate Wagepoint 4.7 out of 5 for its practicality, ease of use, and reliability in handling Canadian payroll.

Pros

Wagepoint makes it easier to keep everything in one place without relying on multiple spreadsheets or manual calculations. Once I enter employee hours or salary details, the system takes care of CPP, EI, and income tax based on CRA requirements. This reduces manual checks and makes each pay run more reliable. I find the Excel import especially useful. Instead of entering hours one by one, I can upload a file and move straight into processing, which saves a noticeable amount of time when dealing with multiple employees. Payslips are generated automatically and shared securely with employees via email or an online portal. Employees can also access their records and download T4 slips on their own, which helps reduce follow-up questions. Year-end work is also much easier to manage. T4s and ROEs are generated directly within the system, and the information is already organized in a way that saves time when reviewing past payroll history. Using Wagepoint has made a clear difference compared to working with Excel and the CRA Payroll Deductions Online Calculator. I used to spend more time reviewing past records and manually calculating details such as insurable hours, but the system now handles these tasks with far less effort. Even compared to other accounting software with payroll features, this feels more focused and easier to work with because it is built specifically for payroll. From a client perspective, it is easy for them to review payroll details and approve without confusion, which keeps communication clear and reduces back-and-forth. Another practical benefit is how it fits into my existing workflow. Payroll data can be exported to QuickBooks Online, which simplifies reconciliation and keeps everything aligned with bookkeeping records.

Cons

Employee hours still need to be entered manually or imported from external files since there is no built-in time tracking. This adds a small extra step depending on how client data is provided. The system is somewhat limited when it comes to complex payroll structures. Situations like unique overtime rules or customized pay setups may require adjustments outside the platform. Reporting covers the basics well, but when I need deeper analysis or more customized breakdowns, I sometimes rely on other tools. Payroll data needs to be exported to accounting software after each run, which adds a small but regular step in the workflow.

I was previously managing payroll using Excel together with the CRA Payroll Deductions Online Calculator. Since there was no direct option for PDOC in the form, I selected Excel as the closest match. The process worked, but it required a lot of manual tracking, calculations, and cross-checking, which became time-consuming when handling multiple clients.

Reasons for choosing Wagepoint

QuickBooks Payroll was considered, but it felt more complex and heavier than what I needed for smaller client payrolls. It also felt more suited for full accounting systems rather than a focused payroll solution. Wagepoint felt more straightforward and easier to manage, especially for handling multiple small business clients. Compared to Excel and the CRA Payroll Deductions Online Calculator, it significantly reduced manual work and made payroll processing much more organized and less time-consuming.

Thanks for such a thoughtful review, Chris. It's great to hear the CRA piece (CPP/EI/tax), Excel import, self-serve T4s, and year-end T4/ROE are pulling their weight, and that it beats the Excel + PDOC workflow. Quick notes on the cons you listed: Hours + complex pay: our new Timesheets feature removes the external-file step and adds structure at entry, where overtime and custom pay usually get messy. Happy to walk you through it. Reporting: we'd love more context — what cuts are you pulling into other tools? This helps us point you at something in-product or log it for the product team to evaluate. Accounting export: our QBO, FreshBooks, and Xero integrations can post the journal entry automatically after each run. Email support@wagepoint.com with “ATTN: Capterra review follow-up” for a walkthrough. Really appreciate you writing this.

As the owner of a fairly young business, I find my way fumbling through things such as payroll. Wagepoint is always there for me with quick responses and graceful guidance It’s streamline so many hard to understand things such as proper applied taxes, and deductions to employees paycheques With automation and emails that keep the entire thing turning with very little effort I recommend it to any Business Owner with employees

Pros

The nature in which things are taken care of automatically without the need of in-depth knowledge on accounting skills

Cons

When systems become glitchy, there’s not much you can do about it Although this is a rare occurrence, and I find the system pretty reliable and seamless
