Now we have fully implemented it across our organization, and I hope Canto continues to grow and improve the product because we hope to use it for years to come. Pros I love the visual layout of the product—another competitor we were considering had a terrible UI / UX and that is really important to my marketing team who is very visual! Also we loved the search feature and the tagging. Cons The way the app loads on a MacBook Retina makes it look a little low quality / not the highly resolution of software design. That part makes it feel a little cheap to be honest? Also I don't like that Canto will reload on you at random times (automatically refresh your browser page), even if you were in the middle of a long scrolled search for specific imagery. It will lose your place and have you start over. The search, tagging and metadata functionality is strong, which makes finding assets fast and intuitive, even across thousands of files. Before, things were all over the place. Now, everything is in one place. Paired with its user-friendly UI and powerful search tools, it’s well worth the price. I’d definitely recommend Canto. Pros I often create visual (mostly infographics) and video content that’s widely distributed around my company and sometimes externally. With that said, what I like most about Canto is how easy it helps me find essential brand assets and guides. The auto-tagging and version control features stand out because the some of the assets change quite often. Without Canto’s easy-to-understand UI, I’d be left behind using old media in my new creations. Cons As a user I have few issues to report. However, I know that Canto is on the more expensive side and there were some questions about how quickly we’d see a return on our investment. Thus far, it’s been worth the cost and more. For me it only really worked well for photos and graphics and not other types of media like video. Pros Canto gives a nice visual representation of the different photos and assets you have in your library. It is relatively easy to use and has a nice look. I no longer need to beg other departments to send me their logos. Pros Canto won’t be able to keep much of our collateral so I feel lucky that it does work. The facial recognition actually picked up on some people at the far end of the crowd and that was shocking. I can also make different sections or folders (parent and child) for my content. The customer support is good. Cons Downloading large files is very slow because there are many extra clicks needed before you can start the actual downloading process. Since Canto, everything is now located in one central location, so I know that when I need a template or an image, I am accessing the most current approved version. This helps keep our brand consistent across the team as well as prevents the usage of outdated materials. Pros Honestly, before Canto I was spending a lot of time trying to locate the most recent versions of things like logos etc. With Canto I simply search for what I need, click on the document and I am good to go. Cons There are times when I will upload larger files to Canto and it seems like it will take an eternity. Sharing content with teams or clients is simple and well structured. Cons The main negative point remains the cost, which can be high depending on the size of the company. It ends up saving us time. Cons It is pricey and took time to set up and tag all of our files. Sometimes even with consistent effort with tagging the search functionality does not work. Working with vendors for graphics was done via email. We've been able to transfer most of that over to Canto now. A week after launching Canto, HR came to use looking for photos of colleagues. Previously this would've taken hours to find what they were after. However, the AI Smart Tagging made it very easy to do a search for "people", then we added a couple of filters. Within minutes we had hundreds of photos that we sent to HR. Pros Interface is very intuitive. There is a really good balance between having a turnkey solution and being able to customize things. Custom tags and multiple ways of tagging assets was my biggest priority. There were a few solutions that provided more customization, but would've required more oversight as well. Our small team didn't have the bandwidth for that. Ability to create portals and upload links has been a gamechanger for us in asset distribution and collection. Just hosted a large community fundraiser. We gave each photographer an upload link with the option of some quick tags. We had thousands of images tagged and uploaded into the platform effortlessly. This used to be very time consuming for us. Cons Facial recognition is pretty weak. They are the larger customer of AWS facial recognition tool. If Canto switched to Google's tool, I feel it'd be much more reliable and function the way it's intended to. As of now, we just opt not to use it. Support could do a better job at recognizing the shortcomings of their product and recommending product enhancements. I often have to request multiple times for something to be an enhancement. I haven't had any follow-up yet, so not sure if they're going to implement things though. April 3, 2020 4.0 We are just getting started with Canto but LOVE it! We have over 15,000 assets uploaded to our system to-date and have only been using the product since March 1, 2020. Every day we are learning some new functions of Canto and how to better organize and tag our assets to make magic happen! Canto is worth the cost and I'm excited to keep exploring all the functions it has to offer to us and our clients! Pros I love Canto's Facial recognition feature! We have a lot of assets where we need to identify people and facial recognition has changed everything! now we can search for people by name and access every photo asset we have of that person! Game changer! I also love being able to relate files and add custom fields to assets. This has come in so handy when we need to connect people's images to their stories and FOIP information. Canto has really helped us work smarter and not harder to find all of the assets we have in a more dynamic way! Cons We have found the uploading of assets to be a little more work than anticipated. The Canto Connect desktop application is helpful but when initially setting up out canto product it is a lot of work. When you have over 20,000 assets to upload it takes a team of people to make that happen and a good amount of time to get everything uploaded. Reason for choosing Canto Canto provided a phenomenal products edit extremely competitive price. Their competitors provided similar products but a substantial increase in cost. Some of the standard features of Canto or additional features to cost even more on some of the other competitors products. We also have templates available on Canto, so stakeholders can create simple pieces on their own rather the disturbing the marketing team allowing us to focus on higher priorities. Pros It is very user-friendly. It's visual and easy to navigate. It has great search and filter features. You can send people directly to an asset without giving them access to everything. Cons You can upload a separate cover image; you have to use one that is already in your library; it has to be an actual asset. This is difficult if your fold of assets only contains font or color libraries, the thumbnails have no visual. I would recommend this to other image professionals. Pros We moved our image library over to Canto about 2 years ago and I have found it to be a reliable and easily navigable platform. It's very easy to use and out of the three DAMs I've worked with, professionally, it's the easiest and most straight-forward interface. Cons I have very few complaints. I would love it if we could customize the branding of the platform a little more and it would be nice if there was an option to make the lightbox preview files were a little larger. (There is an option to make them larger, but the difference between the smallest view and the largest view is negligible.) There is also an issue trying to rename files once they have been uploaded. That still doesn't work. If you need to rename a file, you'll have to rename outside of Canto and re-upload. Review Source Kaylee W. November 20, 2017 5.0 Pros Searchability. When assets are uploaded, the system will automatically generate smart tags, and additional tags can be added manually. Our department uses specific file naming and folder structures within Flight, and the search feature makes it easy to pinpoint assets. You can search by filename, folder, metadata, tags, categories, etc. You can also group similar photos together for easy navigating, include the same asset in multiple folders, and create personal "collections" of your favorite assets. Cons I can honestly say that the system is working perfectly for our team's needs. There were a couple functionality issues and recommendations when we first got started that we spoke with the Flight customer support team about, and they were able to correct and implement new features based on our conversation. I love the responsiveness and friendly nature of the Canto team. This is integral to my creative post-production process. Pros Canto makes it easy to keep all of our creative assets in one place, and perfectly accessible by team members as well as the full company and clients. I was able to customize my interface perfectly for the needs of my team and our workflow. I am now able to run most of my asset reviews right on the platform, make sure that all assets are current, and organize/categorize appropriately. Cons I still end up using Vimeo for my video versioning and review process. But I upload the final assets to Canto. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Canto rolled out a video review tool in the near future. Their developers are always listening to the customers' requests. Customizing the software during the installation and implementation phase was more time consuming than we had anticipated and with the new releases of software and portals we have encountered some delays and hiccups (we are working through them). We're hoping to get additional user access worked out with the company. Pros Canto's biggest strengths are it's core ability to house all of our digital assets in an organized manner and then allow us to keyword tag each one. We have thousands of files, and it's super important for us to find the right file quickly without having to know the file title. From there, we can see versions, comments, share it, and more. Cons This software is madly expensive. Yes - it has TON of features, but what it lacks for us is disappointing when it comes to user logins and limited outside access. Their "Portals" area is a nice feature, but it's pointless when you're needing a 3rd party to simply upload their assets (from such as a photo shoot) and you have to send them a core login to do so. You can tag assets and search for them easily. This software can potentially save your organization a lot of time. Cons Customer service / technical support has been frustrating to work with at times, other times they've been helpful. I've called in to Canto before and had one of the reps that answered the phone tell me that they don't have a tech support team, the rep was very unhelpful. Other times I've called in to explain the scenario that I'm experiencing and the customer service rep will then have you fill out a support ticket explaining what you just explained to them over the phone. It would be much easier to just call the rep and have them take over the support ticket entirely. If the team revises their support process, I would be very satisfied.
