Graphics/Web Designer Executive Office Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Easy to Use Digital Asset Management System" November 12, 2018 5.0 In the past, our media library of thousands of images has been housed in folders on a server. The folders were organized by topic and date, but not easily searched if you didn't know specifics of what you were looking for. Image search and sharing was falling heavily on two people. It was also difficult to share large batches of images, as some of the files are quite large. We have been relying on Dropbox, but it was difficult to track who had shared what images. Canto has made our media library much more accessible to internal and external clients. It's much easier to share images and allows users to size images as needed before they even download them. We also have plans to load print-on-demand and template files into our DAM. Being able to the current versions of files in an easy to access portal will be huge for keeping our brand consistent. We do have some brand assets loaded into the DAM and it has already been a big time saver with the ease that we are able to share those assets as requests come in. Pros The part that I like the most about Canto was the ease of getting started. After watching a webinar and an initial training session for the admin area, I was able to set up and customize our DAM immediately. The additional training for users was great as well. But the software is very user friendly and easy to use overall. Customer service is outstanding also. Cons Some of the more advanced features (portal creation and integrations with design programs) aren't as clearly explained or touched on in initial trainings. Review Source Morgan M. November 12, 2020 5.0 As a business that relies on visuals, having collateral at our fingertips of our pieces in use is invaluable. Pros I love that Canto makes it easy to store, search, and manage our digital collateral. This streamlines so many of our tasks when it comes to sales, marketing, and administrative tasks! Cons Nothing! Works great for us... in fact, when we recently had our renewal meeting, we mostly talked about how we utilize the software in our company and how it has improved our processes! Reason for choosing Canto Previously we were using external hard drives, google drive, and dropbox to manage photos, videos, and other materials. I love the ability to tag and sort the images as we see fit and use the custom tagging features to ensure the team can search by whatever is easiest for them. You can easily find all assets for a particular product by searching for that product name, or all content featuring the same model. It's also been helpful in the post-production process for shoots, whereby we can have conversations with the photographer via Canto comments. This has saved a lot of back and forth! The team love it and it's made our lives a lot easier since we've been using it. Easy to share groups of large files. Pros Able to get in, get out, share out link to assets for business partners making it easy to share huge files. Able to find certain images easily to share out and by the search function. Cons We had TONS of assets on Canto which created some speed problems. Images began to load slowly. " September 15, 2017 3.0 Canto enables me to grant file access to many of our departments world wide. Pros Canto seems to be simple enough for even unexperienced users. It is clearly structured and all functions are easy to spot and use. Cons For a software that was recently developed it seems rather simple in style and function: we only received what we specifically asked for and there is nothing wrong with it but a bit of innovation goes a long way. Why not connect it with actual folders on our operating system Microsoft Windows like Dropbox: At some point, we will need to store all files somewhere anyway to upload them to Canto, why not allow a direct uplad from a designated folder windows without having to open the browser? Make that folder accessable via FTP connection, too to have backup access when Canto is down or when there is a browser problem. Image previews and navigating through Canto should easier: navigating through it takes time, sometimes you might select a wrong image due to bad visibility of small thumbnails and even going back one step wastes precious time due to loading time and selecting a new image. I would suggest a slide show feature like the standard picture viewer in Microsoft Windows. Same goes for Video previews. We appreciated that they worked with our budget to come up with a plan tailored to our needs. Pros Canto helps organize our thousands of digital assets. We especially like that we can upload photos, videos, music, and Adobe files. It is helpful as a photo library but also in project collaboration. Cons Canto is not terribly user friendly. Customer service is great and is eager to help you, but some features are buried and if not in frequent use you'll find yourself asking for help for the same tasks. Graphic Designer Graphic Design Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Software that does what it's supposed to … and little else" February 6, 2019 4.0 Overall, Canto is simply too cumbersome and glitchy for something that should be as "simple" as storing and quickly accessing photo libraries. I'd recommend more of a rows/columns type of user interface for albums, instead of the left side dropdown menu types of navigation. Compared to Canto, I'd prefer Google Drive or Google Photos for asset management. Pros Canto allows our team to store, share, and access digital assets and photography efficiently enough. Ability to create albums, tag photos, large storage capacity – all of these are appreciated and well-received. Cons The Canto interface seems a bit clunky and glitchy much of the time. The left sidebar to navigate through albums isn't very intuitive or responsive. Often, when clicking on an album name to open its drop-down menu, there will be no response. So the use has to continue clicking and clicking on it. Scrolling down through each album's photos, the loading of preview images usually lags. And the longer you scroll through the pics, the more it lags. To bypass this, often you need to refresh your browser … which takes you all the way back to the top of the album … and you have to begin scrooooollling dooown through all the photos again. Pros Where traditional file explorers used natively in Windows and Mac fall short is when you have files that aren’t linear—they are best found by searching for them through multiple different routes. File explorers do not allow for that, and instead rely on user memory to find the correct folder and drill down into the correct location. Finding photo’s or videos when you have a large library, especially when many of the assets are ones you didn’t take, becomes almost impossible without a tool of some kind. Canto swoops in and allows users to ditch the folder method of organization and instead rely on keywords, tags, and other metadata to quickly search and find what you need. Cons Canto's different method of organization and searching means that you have to diligently fill in every tag or missing piece of information for every asset you upload into the system; if you’re looking into getting Canto, that likely means you have thousands or more files that you now need to individually update. On top of that, certain fields and UI choices feel a bit clunky, which hurts the most when it bogs down the uploading process. We are extremely pleased with the system, even if it has taken awhile to get all of our assets in order. Pros Canto hit the nail on the head for our company. We really needed a DAM system that was visual, organized and useful for our B2B business. We were in need of meta tag search capability, allowing images to live in many places at once, and a place to store valuable information like descriptions about our assets. Canto does all these and so much more. Canto also has amazing customer service and has always been extremely helpful with answering our questions. Cons The mass uploader app did not go over well for us. We uploaded everything in bulk thinking it would be faster but we then had to go back and organize everything, which took an extremely long time. During implementation, they were accommodating. Because our Client had 5TB of data and wanted to set up some complex features for launch in a short time, we had an internal project manager. This is probably not necessary for a more basic implementation where timelines are less of a concern. But, if you need to get portals, workflows, and lots of assets migrated in a short time, support beyond the Canto implementation team to stay on track may be required. Pros Portals are the feature that has transformed the way our Client collaborates with external partners. Rather than spend time transferring assets to and from, the Client is able to post and receive assets through portals and upload links, liberating their time to focus on creative, value-added work. Cons There are fewer project management-related features in Canto than in some other products. The inability to assign tasks, for example, is absent from Canto at this time. Cons The interface tends to feel extremely slow when scrolling through the library. When doing bulk tasks such as adding a few hundred photos to a collection or adding tags, sometimes I have to leave Canto open working on the task for a few minutes and come back when it's finished. The time before the organization of our marketing material was not ideal. It was a problem to exchange data from division to division (national and international) - we used memory sticks or hard disks. For me, as a windows user, it was impossible to exchange data with a mac user - because we did not use the same network. Data was outworn and there was no version control or right system. Since we use Canto this belongs to the past! The software is extremely customizable and canto reacts very fast and professional to our needs. We\`ve created wonderful processes - for example between Canto and jira (a bug- und issue-tracking-system from other software) - for example between our online marketing and graphic design divisions for the creation of web pages or newsletter. I can count a lot of examples :) !!! We use Canto in processes with external partners like design agency, freelancer, and photographers. They use the improved web client. Since we use Canto we have access to data from everywhere - this is a great advantage. We love the search function based on keywords (in any language). Canto will be permanently enhanced - the version 9.1 has a great adobe integration. A lot of people in my company use the batch processing function. Also, the comment function is a great advantage. Pros I like most that all our digital files and photos are in one place that is accessible everywhere. Cons Canto is well suited for your needs if you have a fairly simple product/file system where everything has its place. Less so when you have a multi-pronged product where everything can fit into multiple categories. I also wish that the Geo feature worked better and was more accessible. It means we don't have to upload, download and upload again because we can issue links to photographers and designers and work far more collaboratively. We can create showcases to show off our work and we have style guides to issue to partners. It's great for media - just send of a link with a few key files or allow them to browse Cons Would like the links to be easier to personalise so there is a list of which links have been sent to which people. March 3, 2021 5.0 Canto has been a game changer. We now have over 250,000 assets digitally stored and organized. I'm able to easily search and share for images without stress. Pros I can now share images to individuals or groups of people without being tethered to VPN, or large files on transfer sites outside of the organization. Cons There have been a few features that could be improved, but Canto listens to feedback and often implements the suggestions quickly, or has great solutions. November 16, 2018 4.0 Having a centralized image gallery for our organization is fantastic! Pros The simple design and intuitive interface of Canto makes archiving and retrieving images or other documents quick and easy. When onboarding images, take the time to properly tag everything so finding specific photos later on will be easy. Once you begin typing a tag into the search filter, images will begin to quickly populate the desktop are of Canto's user interface. Despite being an online archive, thumbnails appear faster than if I were simply browsing my PC using Windows Explorer! Cons It can be a little slow to upload or file away images when onboarding. Also, when organizing folders or albums the software occasionally gets hung up and displays an error message which tells you files are still moving in the background but you may continue to work. If you go back later to check on things, all data eventually gets placed exactly where you intended so it's just a matter of waiting for them to appear where they're supposed to be. December 21, 2019 5.0 We did our fair share of research before deciding to go with Canto. We ultimately decided to go with Canto because of the ease of use (good UX) and because of the competitive price. We are considered a small business, and because of that, we could not justify the price tag associated with other DAM systems. Canto suited our needs perfectly. We needed a repository of our best photos, organized in such a way that allowed us to easily search what we were looking for. Onboarding was really simple. Pros The ease of use (UX) and reasonable price tag were easily the deciding factor for an organization our size (less than 50 people). Being able to add metadata, include geo-location of the photo, and managing duplicates/versioning are some of my favorite features of Canto. It also doesn't hurt that I can access the DAM assets using some of my favorite Adobe products. Cons Building out the folders can feel a bit clunky, but you quickly get use to it. Dragging a 'collection' from one folder to another folder isn't really as simple as I think it should be. Preview mode can seem a bit soft, but I suppose this doesn't bother me too much since the purpose of the DAM library is to help me select which photo I want to use for an ad or to build out a website, for example. We had an issue on our end with the invoice and they were and helpful. They helped us sort out the issue and made it so we would never run into the issue again. Pros Canto has many great product, but this one is perfect for those who are struggling with photo storage and management. We use Canto to store, tag, organize and search for our photos. As a company with many events it's perfect for tagging and finding our participants. Their facial recognition has proven to be an excellent asset to us. Cons The system is great, however it can get bogged down with resizing photos to thumbnail, slowing the scrolling speed when manually looking/ searching for photos. November 23, 2021 5.0 Canto has solved the problem of organizing all of our company's digital assets. Employees can find what they need immediately. It has definitely improved our productivity! Pros Very helpful software for our Interior Design firm! Everything in one place and easy to organize - especially with the auto tagging feature! I don't know what we'd do without it! Cons There is definitely a learning curve with using the albums - they can be a bit confusing when beginning. Providing some tutorials would be greatly appreciated for new employees learning this! September 29, 2020 5.0 Overall, great to use. Awesome features, very quick. It's just unfortunate that a lot of the repository creation has to be so manual. I wish I could type in a tag, and have it attach the other equivalent tags to it automatically, without me doing it manually everytime. For example, when I tag "North America", I wish it also tagged "NA" and "N America". Pros I love the search functionality. It's super quick and easy to find the assets I need. Also, the share links are awesome. Everything is very user friendly. I love how you can create share links and toggle their settings. Now, we can share videos with clients and not worry about them downloading the videos. This is also much quicker for everyone. The client can watch the video on a web browser, instead of having to download it, and depending on the video size, this can take quite some more time. I love how you can adjust the search settings as well, to toggle what things you will search off of. Cons I wish you could quickly share "My Collections" with anyone, like create a shareable link to a collection, instead of having to select all the assets within a collection and then creating a share link. I wish some of the tools were more readily available. For example, I have to select an asset, then the select all button will appear, so I need to make 2 clicks to select everything, when I wish it could be 1. Reason for choosing Canto Adobe was far more expensive, but didn't seem to be that much farther ahead. Didn't seem worth the higher price tag. Review Source DC David C. Pros Great user interface and very well thought through features. A robust and reliable tool. Cons The only issue I have had is connectivity to Indesign. However, this isn't an issue with Canto so much as an internal firewall/IT problem. Reason for choosing Canto Canto clearly had some well known brands already using their product which inspired confidence.
