Cons There were some difficulties getting our previous library and the data associated with each asset moved over. However once we got that done it has been a much better library experience than our old DAM. It's honestly been one of the best experiences we have had with investing in a platform. Pros The software has a bit of everything, and it just works. The most complicated element is setting up your own metadata structure, and that's really an internal conversation about organisational culture, how we think, what we need. We love the portal functionality. There are tonnes of ways to upload, and lots of nice, very different ways to add metadata to your files. Cons The aesthetic is slightly dated, but that's honestly a minor quibble. Sometimes keeping it simple is what helps it work so well. September 13, 2018 4.0 Pros That I can upload thousands of files at once with tags and meta data, and then once they are uploaded I type just a single word and find all files needed. Canto makes file finding easy. I can set files as pending or approved so that only the right personel are able to view and approve files. I love the mass upload app, it works great and if you needed to, you could even upload your entire server all at once Cons The navigation on the left side of the site isn't the best, it feels a unnecessary when there is the ease of typing in a keyword and getting exactly what you're looking for. They're relatively easy to implement and search is intuitive and works well. Cons The multiple facets of organization aren't entirely clear -- between workspaces, teams, folders, and more, how best to organize the content can get confusing. December 12, 2019 5.0 Canto's DAM has helped us get our assets into a central and easily accessible location. No more worrying about what happens if a hard drive is lost! Pros My favorite thing about Canto is it's ease of use. It reminds me of iTunes a bit, there are several ways to search for assets which make it very easy for users to locate assets. I come from a background of keywords and tags and appreciate the way it is laid out in Canto and as an administrator I also love the reporting aspect, specifically the metadata activity metrics. Another huge plus is the external connections you can link to upload from Dropbox and Google Drive. Finally their implementation team and account support is top notch. They followed through with anything we asked of them and made sure we were well trained and ready to train others. We continue to have monthly meetings with them and I learn something new every time that makes me more impressed with Canto. I highly recommend! Cons I really don't have a whole lot to complain about. I would just recommend that before your team is ready to upload from an external connection into Canto, make sure you do some up front work in your existing file structure. It makes the upload much easier, it's hard to change the file structure once assets are uploaded into Canto but there are workarounds. Canto makes it super easy to upload, transfer, download, and arrange content. Their tagging features make it super easy to search exactly what you're looking for. Pros Canto is super user friendly and easy to use. I have clients all over the board that are good with technology, and some that aren't. Canto is very easy to navigate, select specific permission views, and create separate portals. I love all the capabilities for sharing, saving, and organizing our brand assets. Cons There may be some features that are limited, such as one place for various users to upload content without other users viewing it. You have to create separate links per user. If there is a feature that currently doesn't exist, customer service is quick to add it to a queue of improvements for the system. Pros As a nonprofit organization that frequently profiles individual members of our organization, Canto provides us with a quick and effective tool to search for photos of individual people. By tagging photos with names of people in them saves us hours searching through event photography to see if there are photos of a particular person. Moreover, we can easily search photos of a particular person by photo orientation, meaning we can find a headshot quickly or a landscape photo that works well with our website. Canto also allows us to back up all design files and create a repository of them that otherwise would take up too much storage on our other storage systems. Cons If we spell a word wrong when tagging a photo, that shows up in the search if you forget to delete it. Also, smart tags can cause confusion at times as they may not be accurate. Graphic Design Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Best DAM offering out there" September 11, 2017 5.0 I'm not really sure if you are asking me for a meta review of Capterra as a product or Canto but I would say if it seems like it would fit you definitely go into it. You'll find that with Portfolio you'll be searched based and the customizations are there, but it falls short on some key things Canto can have and that's namely that you can bucket everything into orderly categories that make it really easy for the end user to get at. MediaBeacon is also search based and absolutely infuriating to use. If you don't expect your end user to know what they are looking for before they go into it, you'll want Canto. Cons There are some really odd quirks about it on the web end of serving things up and having to restart Tomcat service and do some really frustrating hoops in setup is a thing, but if you have good support it's all good stuff and the thing is rock solid afterwards. Initial setup of DAMs is frustrating if you don't live in it, but as said in the pros area of my review it is far better than your other options out there (Extensis Portfolio and Esko's MediaBeacon would be the other two you would look at when going for DAM solutions). Gonna note that the reason I tossed the three stars out there on customer support is that it's a product supported by third party resellers, which is totally understandable Review Source JS John S. This is easy to use which means we use it regularly. Pros It's really easy to use. I can quickly upload assets, tag them, and make them accessible to our users. The search feature is powerful enough to make it so you don't really need folders. Cons The branding and color schemes aren't as easy to customize as I'd like. Pros How easy it was to upload photos and the amount of space that you get. Canto is a great place to upload all working files as well as photos & videos to share amongst co-workers and clients.Has a great A.I. smart tagging system to add tags to your photos so you don't have to. Cons Scrolling through long lists of photos, sometimes when you download a photo it will but you all the way back to the top of the list. We are new to DAM systems, but think we made a sound investment for our fledgling company. Pros The Canto upload links have helped us tremendously streamline how we ingest files. We are just starting to work with the branding templates and portals which are exciting our B2B clients that we are partnering with. Canto has allowed us to work more efficiently remotely during this time and given us peace-of-mind with their security protocols. Pros Canto is super easy to use and makes on-boarding team members super easy. It has great commenting features that helps us with retouching and approvals. One of my other most favorite features is the edit tool to make one asset live in multiple albums etc. Cons I wish the interface was a bit more current some of the navigation seems a bit antiquated. For example you can't go back within the canto interface you have to go back on the browser. It is also really sensitive to internet so if you loaded a bunch of sub folders and it refreshes the browser it does not remember where you were. Overall, the most significant selling factor of Canto when compared to other solutions is the price. It is vastly more affordable while not sacrificing many features. Cons Feature Scalability. While Canto is much more affordable, it also lacks some extra features that make the other offers so enticing. As a DAM, Canto is very usable. However, if you want to create unique brand pages (like with Bynder), you're somewhat limited with the default style guide pages. You can't get very creative with portal pages, and there's not much you can do outside of the core DAM functionality. Review Source Adam G. After a flood in our building and some IT problems with forgetting to backup our server, Canto was a godsend. It has been great so far, and I'm sure it will only get better from here. Pros I love that I can have all my files available for search with designated keywords that I choose. Uploading mass quantities of files all at the same time is beyond easy. Cons The Navigation on the left side of the window is a little clunky, but when I'm just looking for exactly what I need, I can just type in the product name or a keyword and BAM there it is. Pros It is a user friendly tool, with a lot of options for customization. This allowed us to tailor the platform for very specific needs. For example, when I open an image with lots of tags, they don't all show. I love that we have multiple options for sharing files with others depending on what our needs are. The support team at Flight is great and is willing to speak with us directly to correct any issues we are having. They are always willing to listen when we are looking for additional functionality. Cons This is mostly user error, but we did not nail the organization down as well as we should have in the beginning and have struggled to rectify that. Pros I like that is it really well organized and easy to see my assets. I also like that I can control who does and who doesn't see assets. Cons I think it is tedious when there are lots of pop-up windows to send someone a link to an asset. I think that it could be streamlined with a better UI. It is a major pain point for me. It gets the job done and is easy to use. Pros The program is fairly intuitive and easy-to-use. I like that I am able to divide our assets into folders and albums and add tags. The AI has also improved the search feature over the past couple of years. Cons There isn't much that I'm critical of, but from a design perspective, the interface look is a bit dated. Pros Canto has reimagined how my team collaborates by providing a centralized project hub. It also provides incredible customer service. Cons I wish the pricing structure was a little more clear. When we first signed with them, contracts were based on cost per feature, and when we renewed it had shifted to bulk pricing. September 11, 2017 4.0 I manage dynamic photo collections for multiple organizations with staff spread across the US, Europe and Asia. This has been a good solution for providing that staff with access to their event images. Pros It is designed for image files and it manages those well. It's pretty intuitive for the end user to figure out how to perform the basic functions. 99% of the time it has been rock solid for us. Cons 1-The interface has changed very little over the 15+ years we've been using it. It seems dated, although it is functional. 2-Server software install is too complex. I don't like having a bug introduced by a software upgrade and then having to pay to have Modula4 help us install the fix. 3-Web Solutions are lacking. We pay Modula4 to use their web interface because Canto's solution is lacking in UI appearance and functionality.
