It's a wonderful, easy-to-use product that has saved me time in my work. I love that you can categorize images in folders, and that you can put tags on images so they're easier to search for and find. Pros I love the fact that I can easily access images approved for use by my company for marketing purposes. I'm a remote worker, so being able to use Flight makes it so much easier to get what I need quickly. I also love the comments feature - that way I can comment where and when I've used a picture. Cons I wish I could open the images in a new tab, while keeping the list of thumbnails open in a separate tab. Looking at the larger pictures would be easier this way, and then I wouldn't have to go back and scroll though the thumbnails again if it wasn't the image I wanted to use. Review Source MH Markus H. The first step was to replace file servers as a silo for media assets by a sophisticated catalog solution. Within Canto we could build a metadata model that really represents the structure of information we need in order to manage assets in every context. Even challenges like assuring consistency of used terminology and translating metadata could be handled by using the standard functionality of Canto. Now we have a solid basis to meet the demands of media-enriched online marketing towards visual, social, and video networks. Pros It's a standard software that allows customizing by configuring and without calling for programmers. The web interface became really powerful and facilitates workflows with external contributors, press contacts, and prospective clients. Pros This solved a major problem for us. We had 9 different programs to organize all our assets. Now they're all in one place, tagged and organized. We are also able to share our photos via portal to our wholesale partners easily with this. Overall, it's fairly easy to update with new assets and share with others. Pros I like how easy it is to tag photos, create new folders and albums. It's also easy to add your own fields to fill in on each image. I love how you can also apply tags in bulk before you upload photos. Cons I wish it was easier to rearrange folders and portals. We wanted to remove folders and albums from portals as people we wanted to remove access to assets but wasn't able to do that. We had to create all new folders instead of just rearranging them. Pros The software is able to keep our data organized and provides us with a quick way to view and sort very large image files. Our database has grown exponentially since we have been using Canto and the software has been capable of handling everything we have added without slowing down at all. Cons I have had negative experiences with customer support and, as a non-profit arts organization, the cost of the product is a big challenge for us. Despite having paid annual fees for maintenance, some of the kinks in the software have warranted additional fees to get resolved. Most of the customer support team has exhibited very limited technical knowledge and troubleshooting with them has been a huge challenge. Not great, but not awful. Pros It's fairly easy to use, easy to drag and drop for uploads. It's also easy for people in charge of approving or looking at photos to look and sort through photos. They can type in keywords and search. Cons There have been a lot of bugs over the last few years. There are functionality things that can make things much easier on consumers that were never thought about. I understand growing pains, and things have gotten better. During our research for a DAM, we went into various platforms, none had an easy user interface ready to use except Canto. Canto Support team is always ready to fulfill our improvement requests and customized integrations. I would also recommend Canto for his value for money, extremely competitive and for the multiple platform integrations such as with Adobe, Office, Sitecore. Also workspaces are very helpful when you work with your creative agency and you need another step before moving all the new assets into the main library. Value for money. I have not been impressed in the UI and performance of the system. The ease of use for admin, users, and non users is good. We have about 2000 assets in our system. We have a mix of Video, Photos, PDFs, and Word Docs. Pros You can configure the system anyway you like. So you can organize your assets that fits your organization the best. It is so easy to select one or more, generate a link and send it to a nonuser which is huge! The guest upload feature for letting people outside of your user group to send you files and upload them in full resolution. Having the ability to have a temporary selection board to pull assets together for temporary use is awesome. You can create external portals for grouping assets for external presentation to others. Cons The performance is not as good as it should be. When you create a portal the changes take a long time to load. The UI is not modern. The interface feels a lot like a file browser, which is familiar but dated for browsing through hundreds or thousands of assets. Web upload via Safari is not reliable but at least there is a OS X app to upload through which works well. Reason for choosing Canto The cost and ease of use is great. Review Source LB Luke B. Pros Ease of use, previous to Canto we had network shares holding all our photos for our organisation - this made searching, sharing and keeping track of GDPR policies on the photos very hard. Thanks to Canto we now share, find and add photos with the upmost ease. Cons The ADFS link to our domain - some features you can't use due to us wanting it to link to our active directory - there is no office 365 synchronization. No more communication delays or confusion about which file to edit. Pros The first thing I should mention is its organizational functions. I can easily categorize, tag, and search all my images, videos, and documents with just a few clicks. No more wasting time searching through endless folders! But that's not all, the ability to share and collaborate in real time with my team is just amazing. Cons The first thing I should mention is the price. Oh my gosh, that's a bit excessive! The highly visual interface helps all of our staff members easily find what they are looking for, and the search functionality as proven pretty accurate and helpful. As we approached our storage limit, we were happy to learn of the cold storage option which let us archive some of our less-used material at a low cost. Cons My only complaint is that as we've used up more storage, it seems like Canto is running slower and slower. Not sure what the cause for that is, but I do have to be patient with it these days. Archivist Used the software for: ### "A great way to organize, locate and deliver assets to a variety of users in a variety of forms" December 22, 2014 4.0 Canto Workgroup allows us to manage a multitude of assets of varying sorts across multiple folder structures and servers then easily locate them without wandering blindly through the asset terrain. I also like that I can apply a multitude of categories to assets (if I want) making them even easier to locate in a comprehensive way which a folder structure and/or naming convention will not allow. I also like that I can deliver one asset in multiple sizes, color spaces, resolutions and with specific or generic watermarks without needing to maintain a bucket of all these possibilities in the asset server space. Some of the functionality, such as watermarking, is limited awkward and clunky. I often find myself needing to create complex actions in order to accomplish something that I think is fairly logical straightforward and simple using these interfaces. I also find that the interfaces and specific user settings are not particularly intuitively displayed which makes it difficult for users to utilize all of the various features without a lot of instruction. Help documentation can be somewhat labyrinthine. Additonally, some of the asset conversion (especially with regard to the interpretation and conversion of color spaces and file formats) leaves a bit to be desired in terms of final output. Overall, Canto fulfills our needs for an organized system of asset management and delivery with a minimum of redundancy. While it seems that wasting server space with multiple asset forms and sizes is almost inevitable, Canto has allowed us to have multiple "master" asset stores which are mostly uncluttered with bags of redundancy. This is also important because many of our users need to provide one set of assets in multiple varying forms and resolutions, which Canto easily accomplishes without a lot of struggle. Through well-defined naming coventions and folder structures and the manifold software features, our active and legacy files are complete, well organized and easily accessible even after they've been removed to storage media. Their customer service is incredible. They are always happy to get on the phone or meet us in person whenever possible to talk us through any challenges we're having or new features we'd like to see. Can't recommend it enough! Pros Canto allows our team to contribute photo and video to our archive across multiple locations. As a designer, it is a convenient way for me to organize and curate the best of our images. The search tool is great and has recently integrated smart tagging which I love. Cons My only challenge currently is that our previews of the images are not clear as the original, so it's sometimes difficult to assess quality. Our company uses project photos for many types of content, and it's so easy to lose the images/videos we want on our company's network. With Canto we are intentional about tagging our photos and videos so users can easily find what they're looking for without hours of digging through files! Cons It can take some time to upload content. We went through a multi-month push to get as much content on the system as we could (more than 14,000 items) and batch uploads were tough. Either the tags and descriptions would be off or not show up at all, or it would add the wrong information. After we discovered these issues it was no problem finishing it up. You can easily create an asset structure and sort your files into albums and folders, and label them using keywords and smart tags. After sorting your files, you can share them to social media channels like Facebook and Twitter or File storage services like Dropbox, Google Docs and Box. To drive effective collaboration, you can create smart URLs and share them with key stakeholders. Cons Canto doesn't have pricing regime. Their pricing plans is tailored to suit your needs. The migration of the old DAM system was accompanied by Canto very professional. The handling of more than 200k of highres assets in several portals is fast and easy. Managing the files with the native or web client is fast and intuitive. Working together with the guys from Canto showed us how close they are to their product. Customized features like an InDesign package download were no problem. The good integration of the software into InDesign was one main reason for the purchase. Using the system as a distribution platform and a collaboration platform helps us a lot to do our work in a very effective way. Until now a very reliable system. Due to the versatile possibilities the software offers, sometimes the handling seems a bit complex. All in all we are very happy with this system and looking forward to a DAM good future.
