Accountant-administrator Construction Used the software for: 2+ years ### "BQE Core - no longer a suitable project management software for engineering companies" March 26, 2026 2.0 The first two years with BQE were great, we felt it was good value for the money, we arranged with them to customize some reports and invoice templates. We thought we had made the right choice. The last two years the prices have gone through the roof. Customization is no longer affordable. Customer service is still great, although there are new people that I feel need better training before they are put on the job. But what has been a major headache for us is the fact that at one point at the end of 2025, BQE changed all the drop-down menus, adding additional information into the window. As an example, when we are now trying to decide which project and phase we want to select, we are faced with a list that compresses information like client, project manager, etc, which is not relevant to our selection. Because of space constrains, we no longer can see the full text of the projects and phases, which makes it very difficult to figure out which phase we want to select. We have requested the company to fix this issue, their response has been that we need to change our project phasing system and make our headings shorter. Pros We are a small engineering consulting from Vancouver, Canada, five years ago we were looking for a project management software that was compatible with QB. We came across BQE Core and we liked the pricing, the flexibility and most importantly the fact that was specifically geared towards the engineering and construction industry. We have very lengthy projects that could take years to conclude and get very often divided and subdivided into many phases. BQE Core allowed us to organize our projects and to facilitate the time tracking and recording into the right phase. It did have some features that we thought were great, like the invoicing which I still think works very well, and the easy synchronization with QB. In addition, the fact that we could easily and quickly connect with customer support, made things very easy when we were learning how to use the program. In general, customer support is great. Cons BQE is not the most stable software, there is a speed problem, very often we find that we think we have saved to find out that our entries are not there, or we have to create the project all over again. This has improved over the years, but it still needs work. It is particularly bad on Monday mornings when the employees are trying to complete their timecards from the week before. From the beginning we found that BQE was very much geared to the US market, which made it tricky when it came to set up taxation here in Canada. This is one of the reasons we keep our accounting software separate and synced our projects and billing at the end of the month. Pros Very robust, full featured suite. Many variables to search for data. Has a CRM and accounting module. Cons Very slow, cumbersome at times to run reports and navigate. Custom reports need to be created by BQE (for a fee). Not really geared for project/task management. Somewhat complex and not intuitive user interface. Pricing isn't exhorbitant, but not the most budget friendly. Pros The simplicity of logging hours, sorting the task, and being able to add notes for accurate billing and invoicing. Cons Not being able to read longer titles on projects. Sometimes the discipline I am billing is at the very end, and I am unable to see which one until I has already logged it. It’s a powerful, all-in-one solution that helps streamline project management, time tracking, and accounting in a single platform. While there is a bit of a learning curve at the beginning, the efficiency and visibility it provides into projects and finances make it well worth it. Pros What I liked most about BQE CORE Suite is how it brings everything—project management, time tracking, and accounting—into one clean, easy-to-use platform. It saves time, reduces errors, and makes it simple to stay organized and on top of project finances. Cons One area for improvement is that the platform can feel a bit complex initially due to its wide range of features. There’s a learning curve when getting started, and some reports or settings could be more intuitive. We have become much more efficient in our operations and allowing more of our employee's time to be not only used for more important things than tedious admin work, but also easier to view and project their day to day tasks. Pros Able to implement it quickly, and my team caught on quick with training. It was not as painful to switch from our previous processes as we expected. Cons There have been some minor bugs but we were never without anything for an extended amount of time and customer service has been very helpful. Review Source Nick D. We got the product BillQuick first and then went online to Core, which was a blessing because a couple of months later the pandemic hit and we were all homebound. It allows for clear communication between myself and my team leadership, so there is no question about where my time is going and how long a task took to complete. Pros It breaks down each of my projects clearly and I can directly see where all of my time is going! It offers a lot of control. Good layout for site navigation. You can add widgets to your "dashboard" for what is important to you. Pros Good for time-sheet tracking. Both for yourself and tracking time billed to projects. Easy input with a well-working search feature and "Load Recent Activities" button. Also breaks up billable and non-billable time for you. I rarely encounter any issues. Pros The dashboard is extremely useful as it provides a snapshot of all the information important to me (e.g. performance, PTO balance etc.). Cons At times when using the mobile app, I am unable to see narratives for time entries. This is usually rectified by logging out and back in again however, this can be inconvenient.
