Freshbooks was a decent alternative to Quickbooks -- we chose Freshbooks because Quickbooks keeps raising their prices. Pros Reports & data download faster due to the FreshBooks server setup. The user interface is not very different from other entry-level accounting software, the data download speeds are much higher. Cons Quickbooks customer service is truly superb. Not only do they understand accounting, but also software and tech. We had that service level expectation when we came to Freshbooks, and we were let down. I'm a sole-proprietor, but have a number of different clients - Freshbooks makes it easy to track my ongoing projects. I also like that there's an app so you can see what's going on while you're on the go. Cons The way you navigate a few things could be more intuitive - but based on what I've seen, the new version has taken care of most of that. There are several reporting functions for each main function (Accounting, Customers, Billing and Time Tracking). But no option for custom reports, which I often need as my diverse range of clients, has different processes, configurations, etc. At the very least, I would like to be able to customize the integrated reports at some level. I never feel exhausted after signing in, not even after a long day at work. The most important data is readily available on the dashboard when I check-in. I can use FreshBooks to manage my design business. I do various activities, including keeping track of my time, making estimates and invoices, developing projects, setting up ongoing retainers, etc. Cons As a result, automatic payments often cause a lot of confusion. Even the smartphone app itself requires a lot of improvement. Additionally, FreshBooks has to work on its customer support. I used to use a different software and I was constantly getting bogged down in it and forgetting how to do what should have been simple tasks. Then I tried FreshBooks and found it extremely easy and intuitive to use while doing most tasks. When I have occasionally been unsure how to do something, I have called their technical support and have always been impressed. No automated system to go through and the person that answers the phone can actually answer my questions. The software does have a few limitations like I wish the estimate form was more flexible and I wish I could set rates for myself and my subcontractors on a per client basis, but overall it works great for me. They make you go through so many hoops just to troubleshoot. Pros Invoicing Time Tracker Online payments Cons Two majors issues that are making me look elsewhere. 1. Time tracker doesn't always work. You pause your time and return later and it is still going. There is a huge disconnect between the app and website time tracker which causes sync issues. I've used a couple of other time tracker software tools and I didn't have this issue. It is important to have accurate time and I constantly have to adjust. 2. The invoicing is inaccurate. I didn't notice this until recently when I submitted an invoice for what should have been an even amount. I noticed my hours said 80 but the invoice total wasn't adding up. The hours on the invoice was short by about $10. This happened more than one. Every invoice I have to adjust the amount. I notified Freshbooks and again months late the issue still exists. Review Source dM drew M. owner Information Technology and Services Used the software for: 2+ years ### "trades improvements for loss of features" November 1, 2018 4.0 I've been a long time Freshbooks user and can say that while the recent major update introduced needed features, they cut out quite a few features I found critical. Two critical features that no longer exist include: 1) No auto currency conversion. In the old system, you could apply the current currency conversion rate to an invoice at the time it was sent. Now I have to do those calculations manually and with several non US based clients, each with a dozen or more line items, what used to take seconds is now a huge time-consuming. I've been told by Freshbooks that there are no plans to bring this feature back. 2) No more per client credit feature. In the old system you could apply a credit to any client that in turn could be used on any invoice. The client could even apply it where desired for future charges. In the new system you must create an invoice then apply the credit there. It can then only be used for that invoice. I use client credits all the time for referrals and allowing them the ability to apply to invoices as desired in whatever amount they wanted was a huge asset. That's completely gone as is the dedicated credit dashboard. 3) Reporting requires more clicks to filter than the old system and while it isn't as big of an issue as above, I don't understand how they could determine that requiring users to click more was a smart move. Pros \- Ease of use for us and the customer - Ability for users to quickly login and see outstanding invoices - Ability to track revenue, expenses, and time - Quickly follow up with bounced payments by re-running at a click of a link. Cons \- A little more granularity on permission levels between users would be helpful. - The inability to break out payments in multiple stages would be great. I had spreadsheets for expenses, but never kept them up to date. Reciepts were chucked where ever, and usually lost. I created invoices in Word or Excel - generating them from scratch each time. Tax time was a nightmare. I was so disorganised that I usually ended up not claiming any expenses for my arts work because finding and recording all the info was too overwhelming. Freshbooks totally changed the way I saw managing my arts endeavours. In Freshbooks, I can quickly generate quotes, invoices, track time and expenses. It is so easy and so lovely to use that I can't believe anyone wouldn't want to use it. Pros \-The iPad app is beautiful and allows you to snap photos of receipts, saving them straight to the cloud. -The people who work there are clearly awesome. -You can create projects with time budgets and generate invoices from time entries. -You can customise the colours and logos even on the free plan. -Freshbooks integrates with tons of other applications (Google Apps, Xero, Basecamp etc). -There are real people available to help you and they actually respond to emails! -You can add people as sub-contractors and create teams to track time/ projects/ billing. Time tracking is competent, and also has a nice timer that can be activated and runs in real time. Cons Project management is almost non-existent to go along with the time tracking. Cons It never once made me a cup of coffee. I know that sounds like a weird joke but that's pretty much the only thing that it couldn't do for me. It took a matter of seconds to add them. When they weren't working out for me, getting them removed took numerous phone calls and hours of my time. It is easily learned and mastered. Time-tracking is a simple yet very useful feature as well. The software is overall easy to manage and use. Cons The greatest problem of this software is with the app, it is a little behind its time and needs further improvements. But it is a very minor setback since the software works greatly on Macs and desktops.
