I use HackerRank from the recruiter side rather than managing or creating the technical assessments. It is convenient for sending tests, monitoring completion, and viewing pass or fail results through Ashby. This reduces manual coordination and makes the technical screening stage easier to track. However, my visibility into the actual results is limited, and recurring candidate complaints about unclear timing, technical issues, and integrity monitoring affect the overall experience. It is a useful screening tool, but assessment configuration and candidate communication need to be handled carefully to avoid losing qualified candidates for reasons unrelated to their technical ability.

Pros

From a recruiter’s perspective, HackerRank makes technical assessments easy to send and monitor. Its integration with Ashby allows me to see when a candidate completes an assessment and whether they passed, without having to request updates from the technical team. This makes standardized technical screening easier to manage at scale.

Cons

Assessment invitations expire too quickly in our current setup, which creates unnecessary follow-up work when candidates cannot complete them in time. The Ashby integration shows whether a candidate passed, but does not provide recruiters with a detailed breakdown of the results. Candidates have also reported technical issues, including assessments becoming stuck. When an assessment contains multiple sections, the total time available is not always clear enough, and some candidates have run out of time before completing the second section. I would also like greater transparency around integrity monitoring. One candidate reported that consulting documentation and switching browser tabs generated a cheating-related concern. Tab activity may be useful as one signal, but it needs sufficient context because checking documentation can be part of a realistic development workflow.

Great interviewing platform. It is very easy and intuitive to work with. Makes interviewing a seamless process

Pros

Great collection of questions to choose from. Like the language and framework support as well. Whiteboard is a great addition too.

Cons

Nothing that i have encountered yet. Though one thing to callout is the suspicious behavior is something i am not sure how to take that information into account.

Been using it regularly for candidate interviews and it does the job well. The tooling around proctoring, playback, and collaboration makes the whole hiring loop smoother. A few UX improvements on mobile and question history would make it near perfect.

Pros

Wide language support makes it easy to interview candidates in their preferred stack. I love that I can save questions to my own library and reuse them across interviews — also having access to the firm's shared library is a huge time saver. The private notes feature is great without the candidate seeing it. Recording interviews and being able to reopen them later to re-run test cases against a candidate's solution is incredibly useful when you need to revisit a decision. The observation mode help me silently watch the interview. The away-from-screen and tab-switch notifications give good visibility into candidate behaviour during the test.

Cons

Conducting interviews from a mobile screen is painful — the UI doesn't adapt well and navigating code, notes, and controls on a small display is a hassle. Also, there's no easy way to see my history of past questions asked. If I forget to save a question to my library, it's gone — would be nice to have a "recently used" or question history tied to my user profile without needing to explicitly save every time.

HackerRank is a solid platform for conducting technical assessments, particularly for programming and coding-focused evaluations. The built-in question library, candidate monitoring features, and ease of standardizing assessments make it a reliable choice for most engineering hiring workflows. That said, the platform has room to grow in certain areas: Architectural & system design questions – HackerRank is not yet optimized for architecture-style assessments. The tooling for whiteboarding, diagramming, and evaluating system design thinking feels underdeveloped compared to its strong coding evaluation capabilities.

Pros

Key highlights include: Candidate activity monitoring – The platform tracks time-on-screen and captures screen size metadata, which helps reviewers assess candidate behavior and flag potential anomalies during assessments. Question library & defaults – Adding default/pre-built questions is straightforward, making it easy to standardize assessments across roles without starting from scratch each time. Ease of setup – The overall configuration experience is intuitive, reducing the administrative overhead for hiring teams. These features collectively make HackerRank a strong choice for teams looking to run structured, auditable technical interviews at scale.

Cons

While HackerRank excels in many areas, there are a few friction points worth noting: Custom question creation is cumbersome – Adding custom questions is not straightforward and can be time-consuming, especially for teams that need to tailor assessments beyond the default library. The process lacks the simplicity you'd expect given how polished the rest of the platform is. Diagram-based questions are challenging for candidates – When assessments include custom diagrams or drawing-type questions, candidates often struggle with the interface. The drawing tools are not intuitive, which can introduce unnecessary friction during the test and may affect performance for reasons unrelated to the candidate's actual skill. These limitations are worth considering if your hiring process relies heavily on custom or visual problem formats — in such cases, supplementing HackerRank with a dedicated diagramming or whiteboarding tool may be necessary.

Really positive, the platform is super easy to use. I have gathered feedback from across the business which is also very positive.

Pros

Ease of use - so easy to setup a new test, even without development expertise. The ATS integration is also very handy. The Interview or pair programming tests offer a great insight into a candidates technical ability and also how they take onboard technical direction. The customer service is also good - always happy to help and talk through any issues/blockers.

Cons

Whilst the ATS integration is good it would be better if it include the setup of Interviews rather than just take home tests.

Overall great. Love the platform, especially if you are the question creator/reviewer. The engagement with the sale team overall good. They are being helpful as they can and answer questions relatively quickly.

Pros

Dedicated IDE like Visual Code + MySQL support so we can design a thorough test with unit test running. Protoc features for ensuring fairness of the test even though candidates do test at home. Recently AI feature allows us to expand the test and adjust the process/technical requirements needed for the new age

Cons

Candidates still report occasional instability: test running too long, VSCode crashes though it is getting better AI efficiency marking is inconsistent and unreliable at the moment. AI responses can also be inconsistent for the exact same prompt making a few candidates can have a better head start or worst start by random.

My overall impression of the HackerRank experience is that it’s a strong technical screening platform with clear strengths for scalability and consistency, but it also has noticeable limitations from the candidate perspective. On the positive side: The platform is polished and easy to use technically Coding environments are generally reliable Assessments are fast to deploy Recruiters can evaluate large numbers of candidates efficiently Live coding and automated scoring make remote hiring much easier For companies hiring at scale — especially internships, campus recruiting, and junior engineering roles — it’s easy to see why HackerRank is widely adopted. From the candidate side, though, the experience is more mixed: Some challenges feel overly focused on algorithm tricks Problem wording can be unnecessarily complex Timed assessments create pressure that may not reflect real engineering work Hidden test cases can feel frustrating or opaque A recurring feeling among experienced developers is that success on HackerRank often depends as much on “interview-style coding practice” as on actual software engineering ability. Overall, the platform is generally viewed as: very effective for early-stage filtering, reasonably fair when used carefully, but not sufficient by itself to evaluate engineering talent comprehensively. The most successful hiring processes usually combine HackerRank with: practical interviews, architecture discussions, pair programming, or project-based evaluation.
