Easy for professors to give you the information you need. Cons Way too many folders, way too confusing. Its clearly confusing for the professors to figure out where they should upload and store files, because I have the hardest time finding them. Can be difficult to navigate. I mostly used it to upload content for my students. The discussion boards and threads were used, and it was easy to keep track of grading. There are just some features that need innovation. Pros The ease of use is a very great feature of this software. Adding and managing online courses and lessons is a breeze. It is tough to be an all in one stop, but BB has improved greatly over the years through trial and error. Cons As a teacher/administrator, BB was bulky and took a while to load new classes. I liked that. But other than that, I cannot say a single good thing about it. Pros It is web-based. Some modules can be dragged and dropped. It has a lot of useless features I don't ever need or use, while missing ones that I do need. Cons Let's be real. Blackboard never heard of "less is more." They could learn a lesson from likes of Uber. Here's what students need: 1. Educational content 2. Tasks with Due Dates and eventually grades 3. Chat (Group and Private) 4. Notifications If a millennial designed Blackboard, the entire application could fit into a 3 page app, simple enough for a retard. They went out of their way to make it complicated, so it would seem better on paper. They've put so many bells and whistles that it is an absolute nightmare for both students and professors alike. The mobile experience was relatively intuitive, which is a must in the current environment where students may be working full time while earning an online degree. Cons Compared to other learning management systems (such as Canvas or Schoology), Blackboard reflects the features and structuring of learning management systems of days gone by - specifically, it is structured most closely around a 'document dump' approach to online learning. This approach has been soundly refuted in the research, and while one can certainly design a quality learning environment, many of your end users will likely not have the discernment to do so. From a student's perspective, it is often difficult to access key pieces such as messaging and grades when enrolled in multiple courses at once. Review Source Jim C. Cons The grade center can give a view by the student. Seeing columns of assessments for a number of students make it somewhat cumbersome as the # of assessments grows. I do not recommend this software to anyone Pros There is not much that I like about using Blackboard. It does have a lot of features, but none of them work the way you think they would Cons as a TA, i have to use blackboard to build exams and quizzes for my students and i absolutely hate it. it is the least intuitive process and is a major pain in the butt. you build your exam and you can’t even preview you it easily, you have to post it and hide it from your students to be able to take a look at it and see if everything is okay- and it’s usually not. the partial credit feature for questions is all sorts of whack, so the system always grades questions wrong. it is also a pain to build out matching or ordering questions. it is also difficult to navigate the grade center. Pros what I liked most about the software was that it was user-friendly and allowed me to correspond with students and professors efficiently to address issues/concerns. Cons what I like least about blackboard was that it did at sometimes have IT issues in which they did incorporate their own that would be able to handle any problems that we encountered. Even before they acquired WebCT. Over the years there have been so many versions. Some I loved. Some I found inferior to others (like Moodle). Newer versions weren't always better. However higher ed has unique requirements for compliance, integration and accreditation which makes BlackBoard an ideal tool for that sector. It's fairly easy to use and it's very reliable. If you're in an industry like higher ed, I highly recommend it. Pros It's reliable. Rarely needed tech support. It's pretty easy to use most of the time. It meets the complex compliance and integration requirements of higher education. Cons Lack of customizability. Course templates were generic with little flexibility for how it appears. Also with so many versions and always changing things around, it can be frustrating because you're used to a different version. If you're not in an industry with a lot of compliance regulations (privacy, accreditation etc.) I'd stay away and use something lighter and more flexible. Review Source JL Jennifer L. Pros The software is adaptable to different ways of organizing a course and I do manage to use this software to help teach my classes. Cons Although the new update has improved the user interface somewhat, I still find it to less than user-friendly. You spend a lot of time entering test questions and the like. Pros If you have the support from your school's IT department, this software can be great. I've used it when working for different schools and used it as a student user. The options to personalize could be better. Some things I didn't find useful and couldn't remove from my viewing space. Cons Not being able to personalize options to my needs. Pros I found this advantageous when I was in college as an undergraduate. It was great to track my course work and online assignments through this LMS. For its time it was adequate with the UI layout but to modern look and feel of websites and web application software in 2020 it would be outdated unless they revamped the display of everything. Cons It was just a bit clunky at times and occasionally a pain in the @$$ but it still got the job done. It might have been that my student user rights weren't fully configured and there was a lack of training from the university for students to use the tool and not on the fault of Blackboard Learn.
